BRIANA: Barn doors have been making their way indoors and have landed on top of trend lists in the process. What do you folks think of these rustic accents? Do they make you say “OMG ILU” or “E-I-E-I-OH NO”?

ALYSSA: It’s not a look I’d typically go for, but I actually loved what Tiffany [Brooks] did with one for the winners of our Most Embarrassing Kitchen in America. Choosing to stain it blue allows the natural wood to show through while also making a rustic barn door work in a fairly modern kitchen.

KELLEY: E-I-E-I-NO! It’s an awfully big installation for something that’s gonna look dated in two years.

KERI: I love it! Kelley’s probably right about the ticking clock for this trend, but for now, I’m fully on board. Plus, they don’t take up extra space when they’re open, so that’s just a bonus.

That is all.

KAYLA: Personally, I’m not a fan of rustic barn doors unless they’re painted (like the image Alyssa sent) or small in scale. Plus, I feel like they’re a space-saving solution, but I always see them in huge homes? Anyway, I have an industrial barn door in my loft and if it weren’t there, I’d be giving up a ton of space.

LILI: I really like them when they’re actually salvaged or upcycled from a barn in just the right setting. I don’t think they work in all spaces. The main drawback for me is that you can never get a good slam out of a door like this when angrily leaving a room.

MARIANNE: I’ll always have a soft spot because we have a barn door on the Weekday Crafternoon set, but in my own decor, it’s not my jam.

LIZ: As much as I want to use the phrase “E-I-E-I-NO” in a sentence, I absolutely LOVE barn doors. (E-I-E-I…Yes?) Real, salvaged ones. Brightly painted ones. DIY versions like this one from HGTVRemodels:

With pipe hardware, I think they totally nail the mix of modern and rustic I’m trying to achieve in my home. I also have lots of tight corners that need the extra space that a sliding door provides. Sure, they’ll probably look dated in a few years, but I’ll still like them and that’s what really matters, right?

JESSICA: I love the way barn doors look, but after years and years of apartment life, if I never had to deal with any sort of sliding door ever again it would be too soon. Me and my once-new-now-jank vertical blinds are at war.

We’ve bantered about barn doors, now it’s time to tell us what you think:

Barn doors do not only have to be rustic style. I've seen them with a very modern and eclectic look and my I'm planning to incorporate them in my master bedroom Modern Asian Zen Look.

They are just as beautiful now, with so many various styles, as they were decades ago when I clipped pics out of magazines for my inspiration…long before Pinterest. That kind of stay is more than a fad.

Love the varity in space & design a barn door offers. Both rustic & slightly modern will be used in our next home. I don't see them as a Trend at all.

The modern and eclectic looks of Barn Doors is absolutely amazing. They were good with the rustic style but the modern ones have gone a step further. The only door am a bit apprehensive about are the sliding closet doors as it is difficult to see the whole closet at on time but then the sliding doors are useful space saving additions to almost any closet or room.
