BRIANA: I professed my tree & tree branch decor crush back in 2011 (still love you, Cole & Son Woods!), but even back then, I recognized that there was some trend fatigue. Fast forward to 2013. I just noticed an item in this month’s issue of People StyleWatch declaring that Tree Branch Decor was OUT. Their expert says people are going more modern and less rustic these days, but what do you think? Are you still a tree-hugger or do you wish this trend would make like a tree and leaf? (Sorry not sorry.)

DEANNE REVEL: I was just looking at my accessory tree that holds all my necklaces and headbands this morning and thinking, “Man, I need to get hip. This isn’t cool anymore.”

FARIMA: I was never really on the tree train. I say keep it to nurseries only.

MARIANNE: I prefer my trees petrified these days.

KERI: I’m a tree hugger all the way. I think if it’s done right, using trees and branches in decor can be as timeless as nature itself. And I’m just as delighted with this forest canopy bed now as I was in September:

LILI: I agree with Keri. If you partake in any “trend” and you do it classically, like this:

…then you’re good to go. The tree wall decals may have come to the end of their lifespan though (GUILTY! I totally have some in my bedroom still. But thinking they need to go.)

KELLEY: Wow, Lili. I need the chandelier version of that for my dining room. This reminds me, Briana, we need to send you a picture of the new Scripps sign at the driveway. It’s faux bois!

I have friends who cut beautifully shaped branches and use them as curtain rods. It suits their family’s creative/earthy aesthetic perfectly. These are very similar:

So those, I love. And like Farima I think tree decor is adorable for nurseries. But in general? I’m with Deanne – let’s move on to the next accessory tree.

ALYSSA: I was a BIG naysayer to the tree stump table, but smaller branches in shiny gold or silver, I’m totally behind. I know the trend has been around for a while, but I haven’t participated yet myself, so it feels new to me. I’m a fan of the find-this-everywhere jewelry tree,

and I’m also into a more subtle use, like with these brackets (both from West Elm).

KAYLA: I was going to say no until I saw Lili’s tree branch centerpiece and Alyssa’s shelf brackets. I’m feeling conflicted.

LIZ: The look has been around for awhile, but I still love branch decor! Using an actual branch (spray painted silver, copper or white) to hang ornaments is an inexpensive way to dress up your home for the holidays, and I think it still looks fresh. We even used a branch chandelier strung with dried celosia over the dining table at our holiday party.

(My love doesn’t extend to tree wall decals. Let it go, people!)

DEANNE REVEL: Lili, that centerpiece is so pretty. And the branch with flowers from our Home for the Holidays blog shoot is cute too. Maybe I just need to let the branches breathe and not use them for storage.

LILI: I love [that branch chandelier]. And I love that people’s opinions are being swayed much like a…. branch in the wind?! (I’m really sorry for that.)

DAVID HAYNES: Put a bird on it.  (Sorry, I held it in as long as I could.)

JESSICA: Thanks David. I’ve been trying to refrain from mentioning birds despite the fact that I am still valiantly putting birds on things. Well actually, I did make a new friend…

Jessica's cute gold deer

Oh but about the branches: real trees, please? I really love the chandelier and the centerpiece, and I know that everryonneee does this, but I just don’t tire of seeing branches in a vase. I am also the world’s laziest decorator in the history of the planet and did nothing but play with sticks when I was little, but I digress.

LEANNE: I support tree branch decor as long as the tree branches have been floating around in the ocean for years. Driftwood!

I'm totally on "board" for the tree branches (pretty poor pun, I know) but am so ready to lose the decals — all decals, not just branches. I don't especially care for wallpaper, but if you must stick decor to the walls I think total coverage is the way to go, especially now that removable wall coverings are available.

Leafless trees, preferably in black, are my choice. Black twigs and small branches in a clear red vase are very dramatic.

  3. I love to use branches in home decoration. The one with the candles is my favourite.
