Hollies are my favorite traditional holiday plants. Nothing feels like Christmas more than bright red holly berries and green leaves contrasted against a blanket of snow. And if you love the look of classic holiday decor, then holly branches are the perfect touch to a mantel or tablescape. (You can even embellish dining chairs with fresh holly sprigs.)

In lieu of today’s Mood Board Monday, I’m sharing some ideas to warm up those cold hands — DIY advent calendars. I’ll be honest, the only Advent calendar I’ve ever made has been a construction paper chain-link garland. I’m just too impatient to hold out for a treat each day. (Must. Have. All. Treats. Now.)

I know it’s December 1, but it’s not too late to craft a beautiful countdown to showcase in your home. Not sure where to start? Here are some easy-to-create ideas we love. Plus, they’re kid-friendly, too.

It seems like we’re always prepping for one holiday or another over here at HGTV.com. Finally, one of those holidays has arrived! I’m actually making my first from-scratch pie (fingers crossed!) and trying out a few of our cold-weather cocktails to whip up while we watch traditional holiday flicks. To say I’m excited would be an understatement. Tell me — what do you make year after year on Thanksgiving? Let us know your mouthwatering meal details!

Along with the rest of the Internet, we’ve been smitten with all things pumpkin spice for a couple of months now. First Trevor gave a recipe for the perfect pumpkin spice latte. Then Kayla explored lesser-known pumpkin spice possibilities, like cookies, doughnuts and punch. Yes, punch!

But with a November chill in the air, it’s time to take pumpkin spice off of the table and onto the walls, or the sofa, or the throw pillows. Why? A warm orange hue with a hint of creamy beige will refresh every room. Here are some of our favorite ways to use this hue, just in time for Thanksgiving sprucing.

1: In the Guest Room
This muted orange shade has a rare color quality: It’s both calming and bold. That makes it an ideal candidate for a guest room makeover. Here, designer Susan Anthony topped the pumpkin-hued walls with an organic ginko leaf stencil. Not ready for orange walls? Add interest to a gray room with an orange throw or floral curtains.

I came across this cozy cable knit blanket and life was never the same. (That’s going on my “Desperately Want” list.) If I must deal with winter each year, then chic knit throws and chunky sweaters are my keys to survival.

My fall DIY to-do list will definitely consist of glitter, gold leaf, felt and LOTS of acorns. Just imagine the possibilities! First up, chocolate peanut butter acorn bites for crafting sessions. That seems like the appropriate thing to do, right?

With Halloween days away, I’m sure your candy corn supply is only growing. Forget simply nibbling on this classic American candy as is; crafters and bakers are using our favorite Halloween treat in a number of creative ways. (For those that love nostalgia (and intermediate recipes), try whipping up homemade candy corn.) Whether inspired by its warm palette or its sweet honey flavors, discover seasonal ways to incorporate this fall confection into your decor and party fare.

Some people are really, really tired of pumpkin spice lattes. Me? Not so much. If you love pumpkin but can’t stomach the #PSL, then this Mood Board Monday is for you. Cookies, doughnuts, punch — the possibilities are literally endless when it comes to adding pumpkin pie spice. And if you’re not a pumpkin fan at all? Well, #sorrynotsorry.

Tomorrow is the first day of fall, which means it’s time to close summer’s doors and embrace the upcoming season. To celebrate, here’s one of my favorite seasonal veggies — beets. I’ll admit, I love beets mostly for their rich, luscious hue. (They taste nice too, though.) What’s your cool-weather produce pick?

And the beet goes on:

Caramel is the ultimate fall delicacy in my world. I imagine walking through a harvest-inspired craft fair or autumnal festival with the scent of kettle corn wafting through the air as I sinfully nibble on a caramel apple (or better yet, a scalding hot hand pie).

Everyone is talking about coconut oil — the benefits, the uses, the reasons to have it at home, at work, etc. I’m an advocate for the superfood and love having it in my medicine cabinet as well as in my pantry. Beyond that, I can’t get enough of coconut water and milk, especially in my smoothies. So let’s just give a round of applause for coconuts! What’s your favorite way to use this fruit?

As an experienced traveler, I never tire of the map and globe decor trend. Every time I go to an antique store, I scour through the bin of old maps to see if I can find any that have some significance to me or anyone I know. For me, maps offer up memories that found artwork just can’t. I look at South America and instantly think of my Chilean backpacking trip to Santiago, the Andes Mountains and Valparaiso last year. South Carolina reminds me of my time at College of Charleston and my first year away from home. Give me a world map and I’ll drift into a land of nostalgia.

When it comes to school, the old saying goes: “The tassel is worth the hassle.” I know our younger readers aren’t jumping up and down for their first day back to class, so here’s a trendier twist on cap tassels to make it seem less daunting. Just remember, you’re one day closer to walking across that stage!

“How wonderful yellow is. It stands for the sun,” said 19th-century painter Vincent van Gogh. And he’s so right. Nothing is more bright, beautiful and summery than yellow. So on this overcast Monday, I plan on basking in this bold, lemony hue.

You all love the nautical look just as much as some of us HGTV.com staffers. And after a beautiful and relaxing weekend on the water, I just couldn’t resist this week’s mood board pick. Happy Monday!

I love warm-weather weddings, and I especially love the trends that come along with them. One of my favorites right now is rainbow sprinkles; they’re delightfully colorful and playful. Some brides have even suggested throwing sprinkles instead of rice when the couple exits. Others are covering cakes, cupcakes, macarons, cookies and cocktail glass rims in these vibrant morsels. Do you think sprinkles are a fun wedding “accessory”?

Here’s your mission: grab a cone (or bowl), add two or more scoops of ice cream, then top with an abundance of rainbow sprinkles. That’s it. Happy summer, friends!
