The Washington Post held its “candy-colored take on pop culture,” aka the fourth annual Peeps diorama contest, and the results are pretty incredible. I, like Mariette Himes Gomez, have always seen apartments through glam-colored glasses. Movies that depicted impossibly chic apartments with even chicer people have filled my head since I was a child. Imagine my surprise when the first apartment I lived in had neither the Barbara Novak’s floating staircase in Down With Love nor the massive living space of Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy’s duplex in Adam’s Rib — if only I’d had Gomez’s Apartments: Defining Style as a guide for maximizing a typical apartment.

fleur-de-lis-box-2

Mardi Gras is Tuesday, officially, but the celebration has been going on in New Orleans and Mobile, Ala., for weeks.  These old colonial seaports once bowed to the French crown, so you can’t swing a strand of beads without hitting a fleur de lis (pronounced fluhr duh lee.) The symbol of French royalty and the Super Bowl-winning Saints can be seen on t-shirts sold by street vendors, the rhinestone jewelry maskers wear to balls, the fabulously gaudy royal trains of the Mardi Gras king and queen and the purple, yellow and green Mardi Gras banners hanging from houses along parade routes.
