To help with scale, this week’s “What the…?” is way bigger (and taller) than a breadbox. What do you think it is?
Give us your best guess, and be sure to check back tomorrow for the answer.
When I think of Elvis, I think of…
So, while I have no need for a King cave, I thought I would honor the 76th anniversary of the King’s birthday by picking out something cool for my new apartment. I considered buying a Velvet Elvis, also known as a Velvis. But in the end, I had burning love for this vinyl decal I found on Etsy.
I love this ode to to the King rendered in crisp black and white doing what he did best. It comes in various sizes, including life size, which is how I like my Elvis art. What better tribute for a man who was larger than life.
By the way, Food Network has a great recipe for Elvis-inspired pancakes. Yum!
Yesterday’s “What the…?” is, in fact, a space-saving seating option.
This Aluminum Wall Chair is by the Scandinavian designer Hans Edblad, who also makes cool jewelry. It would make for an interesting game of musical chairs, don’t you think?

While its form is anything but design drudgery (and quite an unusual statement for a coffee table), the original function of yesterday’s “What the…?” was routine. And not for steeping tea.

Terri got it. This Brass Laundry Ball dates back to 19th century Sweden. Washing machines sure have come a long way. (Now, if only someone would invent an automatic folding machine.)
If you come across relics from a bygone era that are mysterious in their purpose, be sure to send them our way at designhappens@hgtv.com.
Here is yesterday’s “What the…?” in action. They’re Gemini candle holders designed by architect Peter Karpf in 1965. Danish vintage classics that would suit any modern home.
These harmonious candlesticks are back in production thanks to ArchitectMade.

With all the frill that surrounds the holidays, it’s refreshing to see such a streamlined object. The question is what exactly is it designed to do?

Send us your ideas, and check back tomorrow to learn that it’s in fact a coffee table with the legs up in the air. (Just kidding.)
The answer to yesterday’s “What the…?” was there the whole time. Its inventive design echoes the shape of what it’s meant to hold.
This Design House Stockholm Umbrella Stand is just one of the many clever Scandinavian designs found at Huset.
