I’ve found myself lost in one too many summer daydreams lately. As soon as warm weather arrives, I start yearning for the sand and water. Unfortunately, I wait and take my beach vacays once the dog days of summer have subsided a bit. When are you packing up and heading to the coast? Try not to make me too jealous.

One of my favorite ways to spend summer afternoons is sprawled on a blanket in the park nomming on seasonal fruit or homemade fares like potato salad and apple pie. It’s even better if you have a good book or company by your side. Summer is near, so pack up a basket this weekend and head outdoors. Surprise your S.O. with an alfresco meal for two, or try a picnic potluck with a group of friends.

As cliche as this may sound, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald was the first modern American novel I became emotionally attached to. I can’t even count how many times my eyes have graced the pages of this literary masterpiece. The emotional drama of Gatsby has been filmed five times with the most recent adaptation, directed by Baz Luhrmann, being released this Friday, May 10. To say I’m excited is a serious understatement. There’s an all-star cast (Leonardo DiCaprio plays Jay Gatsby!), the cinematography is stunning and the soundtrack is incredible (and currently on repeat). Inspired by the upcoming premiere, here’s a contemporary nod to the Roaring Twenties that we just can’t help but get caught up in.

It’s Derby Week, and the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs is only five days away. Horse racing has been around for hundreds of years, but these days the sport proves to be just as much about food and fashion as it is about spectating and placing bets. I mean, you just can’t show up to the tracks without an oversize hat, spring dress and a classic mint julep in hand. Today, we have plenty of inspiration to make sure you show up to the Derby, The Belmont Stakes or the Preakness looking like you walked out of a Southern novel.

Years ago, pattern mixing was just downright messy. Now, it signals smart fashion and design know-how (if you do it right, of course). Sure, sometimes it looks like someone picked up every patterned pillow at West Elm, threw it on the sofa and bam — an eclectic mix of patterns that magically work. But trust me, things can go wrong very quickly. (Think 90s patchwork-style shirts on a large scale. Nobody wants that.) Check out this stunning pattern mixing done right, and follow our tips to bring the look into your own home.

There has always been something comforting to me about clowns. I know seeing an adult in outlandish costumes, colored wigs and dramatic makeup may evoke fear in most, but I find them playful and nostalgic. Despite their unfortunate reputation, clowns will always have a fan in me.

Spring is here! Or at least we’ve been told it’s here, but we’re still waiting for the sunshine and warm weather to fully emerge. All I can think about is wearing pastel hues and drinking cold cocktails on a restaurant patio. In anticipation, here’s one of my favorite colors [that only looks good on me when I've been a little sun-kissed]. What’s your favorite springtime hue?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that a new pope, Pope Francis, was elected on March 13. The biggest news, though, is that he’s the first non-European pope in history. (Jorge Mario Bergoglio is from Buenos Aires, Argentina.) With Italy being all over the news, I figured I’d take this opportunity to give you a virtual vacay to Roma this Monday morning. Sit back and enjoy, friends.

Did you hear the news? Carrot orange is our chosen hue for March’s Color of the Month. It’s bold, vibrant and definitely represents the upcoming season to a T. I mean, it was practically a unanimous vote when meeting newcomer Kelly Smith-Trimble pitched the color with a picture of fresh-out-of-the-garden carrots and other spring-inspired favorites. We couldn’t resist!

I don’t know about you, but I was glued to the sofa last night for The Oscars. I even took my own advice and threw (well, talked my friend into throwing) an Oscar party with champagne, truffle popcorn and creme puffs. One of my favorite parts about Oscar night is watching the stars arrive on the red carpet. That’s when you get to find out that Anne Hathaway picked out her Prada gown a mere three hours before the show; that Jennifer Lawrence hadn’t eaten all day and is STARVING (as she told Ryan Seacrest); and that Joseph Gordon-Levitt had Sally Field tie his bow tie in the car on the way there. (Stars — they’re just like us!)
