In 1947, a brand-new invention called the “microwave oven” was introduced commercially at a whopping price of $495 (that’s $3,500 today). By 1998, 88 percent of U.S. households owned what is now known simply as a “microwave.” Crazy, right?

Today, new innovative appliances are being created to make our daily lives more efficient and easier than ever before. Check out these five smart appliances for a glimpse into what our homes may look like in the very near future.

Ikea Furniture That Charges Your Smart Phone

Photo from Qi Wireless

Do you have a mess of unsightly cords that live around your desk or side table? To combat this problem, Ikea has designed a line of floor, table and work lamps integrated with wireless charging pads to keep your smartphone juiced up at home and at work.

The line launches in Europe and North America next month and is compatible with any device that supports QiWireless technology. Unfortunately, iPhones are not on this list (bummer!), but adapters are available. The furniture also includes USB ports to charge other devices and are available with up to three charging pads for multiple phones.

Bonus: If you’ve bought a new piece of Ikea furniture within the last few years, the company is releasing a line of wireless chargers called Jyseen that can be integrated into existing Ikea pieces. Sign me up!

Pet Hacks

I’m not ashamed to admit that throughout my basset hound, Oliver’s, 13 years, I’ve happily paid for him to see an acupuncturist, animal communicator, massage therapist and yes, the dude even has his own dermatologist. True confessions: I’m far more diligent about Oliver’s skincare issues than I am my own.

Although I’m a dog mama, I’ve got a lot of love to spread around. So, I’ve rounded up some creative ideas for keeping your space both pet friendly and très chic.

1. Kitty Steps. If you’ve already mastered the gallery wall, I’m positive you can handle these kitty steps. Are they a cat toy? Are they shelves? You decide.

2. Wall-Mounted Fish Tanks. What an amazing way to teach the kiddos about life and how to take care of another living/breathing thing. Plus, it’s pretty cool wall decor.

3. Dog Hammock.  If there was an Olympic competition for dog shedding, my dog would be an international gold medal champion. Ditto for drooling. Needless to say, this DIY hammock is a great way to keep all that business out of your car — for good.

4. Kitchen Pet Food Storage. Finding a spot to store a 30-pound bag of pet food is no easy task. So, whether you’ve got a doggie or a kitty, this food storage kitchen cabinet hack is brilliant.

5. Fluffy Rugs. This might seem like a no-brainer, but you can use a stylish rug or pelt specifically as a pet bed — especially if it’s a fluffy number. Small rugs are easy to move around and often look a lot more chic than the average pet bed.

6. Gumball Machine Fish Tank. Here’s a great way to get your kids to give up candy forever: put a fish in their gumball machine!

7. Leather Chew Toy: This leather chew toy for birds is so swank. I would probably sneak into my bird’s cage in the middle of the night and steal it. It would also be super easy to do a DIY version of this with some leather scraps if you’re feeling crafty.

8. Double-Decker Cat Scratch Bed: Grab an Ikea Expedit cube, tie some rope around it, add a couple of fluffy pillows and — voila! You’ve got a super stylish kitty scratch pad.

9. Get Creative With Hooks: Try hanging some interesting hooks near the front door to jazz up your leash storage game.

Do you keep your pets in mind when making home decorating decisions? We’d love to hear about your favorite hacks or design ideas in the comments.

Hampers

There’s nothing in the world my dog loves more than lying in a pile of dirty laundry. Unfortunately, I’m not a dog, so mountains of dirty laundry only serve to gross me out, take up space and remind me what a bad housekeeper I am.

I’ve made it my mission to search far and wide for the most fab, stylish, chic hampers out there to help tame the dirty laundry monster that always seems to live right next to my bed, on my bathroom floor, and if I’m being really honest, on my closet floor, too.

1. Provence Laundry Hamper. Is this a bedside table? A side table? Spoiler alert: NO! It’s actually a hamper cleverly hidden inside a piece of furniture. #genius

2. Charcoal Felt Hamper. This hamper makes me think about neckties, dress shoes and Leonardo DiCaprio yelling “Act as if…!” from Wolf of Wall Street. It’s a pretty swank spot for your dirty socks.

3. Elephant Hamper. Sometimes if I’m having a bad day I’ll type “best friends elephants” into YouTube and spend 20 minutes smile-crying while watching sweet elephant videos. This hamper makes me smile the exact same way.

4. Aqua Herringbone Hamper. Bring a little cheer to the misery that is the spin cycle with this bright, bohemian-chic African basket, or store your snake/belly dancing supplies in it. Whatever works.

5. Round Commercial Hamper. This hamper captures the industrial-chic spirit with the ease of wheels. This would be particularly helpful if, like me, your laundry needs to be collected from all corners of your home.

6. Stainless/Leather Hamper. This is clearly the Rolls Royce of all hampers. If I owned one of these bad boys, I’d probably put it in the middle of my living room floor for everyone to see rather than hidden in a closet corner. It might be the most beautiful hamper I’ve ever seen in my life.

Which one suits your design style? Let us know in the comments.

Valentine's Day Gifts for Guys

For every dude that loves design, there’s one that considers a plastic basketball hoop designer decor. With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, it’s time to get your space into tip-top shape if you really want love to be swirling around like an air freshener. Follow these quick design tips to help make sure your date wants to seal the whole shebang with a kiss.

1. Threshold Woven Napkins. Snazz up your dinner table with some napkins that aren’t paper towels or leftovers from your last takeout order. These machine-washable numbers will up your class factor immediately.

2. Faux Fur Throw. Whether you drop this sucker over the back of your couch or put it at the end of your bed, there’s nothing that says “I’m design-savvy, now let’s snuggle” better than a fab faux fur throw.

3. Turkish Bath Towels. Yes, you can shut the door of your bathroom and hope no one goes in there, but you should probably just face the facts: someone will. To soften the blow, make sure they have some pretty towels to dry their hands.

4. Sonos Speakers. Play songs from your iTunes library, Pandora, Spotify or anywhere else you house your music. You can control it all with your iPhone or iPad, and the sound quality is ah-mazing.

5. Acrylic Frame. Sure, you could simply put a photo of you and your sweetheart in there … but you could also get creative. Write down an inside joke between the two of you, or include a picture of some place that the two of you have talked about going on vacation. Casually leave the frame out and wait for the magic to happen.

Make us proud, guys!

Every year over the winter holidays I do a major purge and winter cleaning while I’m off from work. Knowing I’ll be trapped inside for much of the next few months makes me want to organize and create a more cozy, inviting home. I hit all the major areas: the living room, bedrooms, kitchen and bathroom. An intense scrub-down does wonders, but there are lots of other ideas for creating order and a freshened-up look that really help, too.

If you’ve made New Year’s resolutions to organize your home I thought I’d share some of what I do and more of HGTV’s tips and tricks.

sabrina soto cleaning

Sabrina Soto shows us how it’s done.

1. Clean

First off: take advantage of any cleaning urges you get! I tackle one room at a time so a whole-house cleaning doesn’t seem too overwhelming. If for some reason you lose initiative, tackle the next room the next day. Gather everything you’ll need for cleaning in a bucket or cart. I’ve got a little cleaning caddy that holds all the sprays, cloths and sponges so I can carry it from room to room. It’s a huge help.

2. Purge!

As you’re picking up clothes, putting away all those odds and ends that pile, and stacking magazines and books, set aside the things that you haven’t used over the past few months. For me, if I didn’t (or my kids didn’t) wear a piece of clothing the previous season, out it goes! Donate any books that you know you’ll never read again. Cut out and file away the pictures from magazines that you want to keep (or find that article you love online and bookmark it) and recycle the rest. File away any bills and see if there are any old ones that can now be shredded.

3. Everything in Its Place

Once you’ve made space in your closet and cabinets and drawers, you should have some more room for what you’re going to keep. I worked in clothing stores when I was younger and still love the look of a well-folded stack of clothes. (Perfectionists can even steal the store’s trick: folding boards.) You’ll be surprised to find out how much more likely you are to keep up a nice looking closet than a messy one. I found that I am probably going to need more storage, so I’m looking at something like this media console for my bedroom. I love that it has doors to hide messier necessities.

4. Update Accessories

If you haven’t done so already, swap out some of your lighter accessories for cozy winter ones. Thick blankets, fluffy pillows, shag rugs: this is the stuff winter design is made of, so take advantage! If you want to be very of-the-moment, add Pantone’s Color of the Year to your home with a throw pillow or flower vase. Even something as simple as installing an additional towel rack in the bathroom made the difference for me. Winter white sales can also give you a chance to update your bedding to give your whole room a fresh feel.

5. Lighting

Winter blues are no joke, but you can combat them with good lighting. If you’ve got overhead lighting, adding a table lamp makes a huge difference. Believe it or not, spring lines are coming out now. While the snow falling outside may contradict the timing, brand new lighting is good any time of year. Faceted bases and metallics are still going strong. If you go for a classic shape, it’ll look good all year long.

While I’m not big on resolutions that I can’t keep, organizing my home is one that I love to have. What about you? Do you have any resolutions for your home this year? Let me know in the comments.

Somewhere between us talking about caramel apples and pumpkin spice lattes it got cold — very cold. I wasn’t prepared for it (as usual). Every year between Halloween and Christmas, I find myself frantically searching for warm sweaters and snow boots. I never even dare look at scarves; I can never decide on one. That’s why I was so excited to hear that The Faribault Woolen Mill Company was teaming up with Target to create an affordable collection of cold-weather accessories that will keep my neck — and my techs — warm and cozy through the winter. (I love when a rhyme comes together.)

Check out some of my favorite pieces from the new collection:

Target FaribaultLeft: Infinity Scarf, Convertible Backpack, Weekender Duffle | Middle: Wool Shawl, Wool Scarf | Left: Zipper Pouch, Tablet Sleeve, Phone Sleeve, Wool Scarf

Priding itself on American heritage, Faribault has manufactured woolen goods in the USA since 1865. I always appreciate when a global company, like Target, can help spread the word about a small American brand. The line stays true to the company’s history through classic Americana patterns and colors but opens the company up to new product categories like tablet sleeves and phone cases. While all I want to do is hoard those super warm shawls and throws for myself, I can’t help but think that they would make incredible holiday gifts.

Ok, admission time: I am terrible at table settings.

My table is always too cluttered, too fussy, or too ugly. It never fails, and it’s frustrating. I’m determined to reverse the trend this Thanksgiving by planning ahead. I’ve already decided on a theme — light — or lights. As in, twinkling lights by way of metallics and candles. Light is always a great unfussy idea for decorating, it gives any holiday decor a romantic and festive glow.

Take a look at what is on my “Twinkling Tabletop” list.

wiw-tabletop

H&M is always my first stop when looking for trendy home decor. Their gold and white tea light holders are great source of sparkle. The plaid table runner is also from H&M, its white base and rustic gold and red accents will be perfect for my dining room.

I think Alix Adams’ DIY gold-leafed log candle holders will contrast well with the twig utensil set from World Market (IT’S ON SALE) and Pottery Barn‘s hanging acorn salt and pepper shakers. Ah, and the gilded animal plates from West Elm are entirely too cute to pass up, and the silver caterer’s chargers will look just perfect underneath them — at Pottery Barn, the set of 12 has been discounted to $63, not bad for something that will last 1,000,000 years.

Don’t forget West Elm’s Fair Isle glassware set. I’m super happy the set is on sale right now; it will bring one more much-needed shimmer of gold to my table. But don’t worry, I’ll be bringing in a few personal touches. I have a cake holder, like the one pictured from Etsy, that has been in the family for years. I also plan on creating some fall “faux-liage” indoors with this chandelier DIY idea. And this to-go station will be the perfect finishing touch to my Thanksgiving tabletop.

I’m getting too excited for Thanksgiving, and I’m already practicing the whole eating part.  But I’m just relieved that I’ll finally love the way my table is put together.

What about you? Is sparkle on the table or left out in the cold? Share with us your ideas for the entertaining season — we would love to hear.

Halloween is creeping its way around the corner — just 2.5 weeks left. That means it’s time to plan and organize all of my recipes and decor ideas. Erica’s last post about black walls has me dreaming of how I want my house to look for Halloween.

So take a look-see at what has made my Halloween party to-do list so far.

WIW Halloween Party Ideas

Top L to R: Spider’s Nest Luminaries, Metallic Pumpkins
Middle: Mummy Haystack Snacks, Pallet Board Jack-O’-Lantern, Mr. Hyde Halloween Cocktail, Mini Candy Corn Layer Cake
Bottom L to R: Candy Corn Brownies, Candy Bar Cookies, Bat Pillow, Pumpkin Spice Halloween Punch

I always try to stretch the mileage on my seasonal decor, which is why I’ll always go for items like the metallic pumpkins. While they fit right in for Halloween, they are still good up until Thanksgiving. Plus, they are shiny and we love shiny things. The pumpkin spice punch, brownie, and layer cake are also reusable holiday recipes — and trust me — you can never have too much candy corn. My mom always makes the best haystacks. Last Christmas I made about 400,000,000 of them with her. I might get her help on the mummy haystacks. But the pallet jack-o’-lantern is so cool that I just have to make one. I know I only have 2.5 weeks to use it, but those are 2.5 weeks that I’ll have the best jack-o’-lantern ever. And how cool does that Mr. Hyde potion look? I CAN’T WAIT.

I’ll be counting down the days — and staying pretty busy — with all of these recipes and decorations I have to make. It’s almost more fun than the actually holiday (almost).

What potions and party favors will you be serving up on Halloween this year? Have you found any creep, crawly decor ideas? Let me know and share them here!

Since it has pretty much looked like Forks, Washington (cue visuals of rain, cold and general ugliness) here for the last week — the reality of fall and winter is starting to set in. Because I can’t leave my fireplace on ALL day long — I’ve decided what will get me through the inevitable cold weather is all-new bedding.

It looks like I picked a perfect time to start looking — everyone is starting to release their winter bedding and decor collections. As always, flannel is the hot-ticket but a few brands are getting creative with uber luxurious Mohair blankets and Lamb’s fur pillows.

Check out my list of wants for the season.

Want it Wednesday: Bedding

Left column: Dapper Animal pillow covers, H&M Plaid sheet set, Target Fair Isle blanket, Restoration Hardware faux fur throw
Middle Column: Patch NYC for West Elm reindeer duvet cover
Right column: Anthropologie temple bells pillows, World Market ice skating foxes pillow, Woolrich Logan Ridge blanket, Target holiday flannel sheet set

The Target flannel sheets will last forever, but I can’t wait to wrap up in the Fair Isle blanket — it’ll go great with some hot coffee and that fireplace I was telling you about. The reindeer duvet, part of an ongoing collaboration between Patch NYC and West Elm, gives off a great retro-rustic vibe. The fox and animal pillows are also right on trend — many designers and decorators are turning to our four-legged friends for inspiration. One of our favorite designers, Brian Patrick Flynn, is feeling pretty foxy too — check out one of his latest projects on Instagram.

I know you all are gearing up for the cold weather just like me. Tell me your favorites and share what you have to keep warm this season!

My infatuation with rose gold began about 2 years ago when I received my very first Miansai bracelet as a Christmas gift. It was heavy and masculine with a warm rose gold hue. It seems to go with everything that I wear, unlike regular yellow gold, and provides a bit more excitement than silver (nothing wrong with silver!). Now, rose gold is popping up everywhere with designers and brands using it in unexpected ways. It was a huge design trend for a while, but I believe the warm metallic is here to stay, at least in small accents.

Rose Gold Grid

Top L to R: Cartier rose gold Entrelacés ring, Set of 4 Old Dutch copper canisters, Studiomake gold-plated bowls, Waggo dog bowls
Middle: Samsung gear smart watch in rose
Bottom L to R: Fossil rose gold Boyfriend watch, Miansai fish hook cuff, Mark and Graham monogrammed copper mugs

The Cartier ring is by far my favorite, but the Samsung watch is actually converting me into a wearable-tech guy. The copper pot set from One Kings Lane is a steal: you get 4 different sizes from a great quality brand. With the holidays creeping up on us, I think the dog bowls and monogrammed mugs will make perfect gifts, they are so unusual!

What do you guys think about rose gold? Is it too much — or just enough? Let me know what you think and share with me your favorite finds.

This week, I decided I was going to turn one of my best (read: useless) skills — online shopping — into something from which everyone else can benefit. Since September 1st, I’ve secretly been scouring the internet for new pumpkin products but now that October is FINALLY here, I can set my sights on Halloween.

No matter what holiday is around the corner, little things like coffee mugs, string lights and candle holders always get me in the spirit and make life just a little more festive. There are so many new knickknacks out there, I wanted to share with you some of my favorite internet finds that will get your Halloween off on the right foot:

Want it Wednesday: Halloween

Top L to R: Pottery Barn Pumpkin Luminaries, The cutest Jack-O-Lantern Pillow Ever Made, Mason Jar Pumpkins, Skeleton String Lights

Bottom L to R: Printable “Trick or Treat” art Print, Frankenstein Mugs, Spooky Shapes Halloween Pasta, Giant Dia de los Muertos Cookies

If you’re anything like me, the mere notion of Halloween springs to mind visions of endless candy isles at grocery stores. Look at some of these sweet tooth satisfying — and inner child satisfying — treats: White Chocolate Candy Corn M&Ms (My fav), Candy Corn Hershey Kisses, Hershey’s Candy Corn Bit Bars, Candy Apple M&Ms, and finally Pumpkin Spice Oreo cookies.

On Christmas Eve/Christmas morning I’m typically tapping my toes waiting on water to boil while trying to time one dish with another, then fitting in a sitcom while waiting on my oven to preheat (ridiculous!). My ancient appliances take all the fun out of holiday cooking. If you’ve seen our Holiday House kitchen remodel, then you know a modern update can make a huge difference, especially during the busiest time of the year.

Modern Gray Kitchen Makeover

Designer Laurie March outfitted the once contractor-grade kitchen into a cost-saving yet custom masterpiece with brand-new appliances just in time for holiday cooking. To create a more space-saving solution, she chose a microwave range above the induction cook top. This frees up countertop space and is more cost-efficient, too.

Modern Gray Kitchen Makeover

So, what do you do with all that extra countertop space? Set up a sweet and savory holiday brunch buffet, of course! Laurie’s efficient kitchen layout is perfect for holiday entertaining. The remodel’s biggest splurge, a storage-packed, concrete-topped island, is the ideal spot for setting up a Christmas morning spread. Plus, it’s right beside the oven for a quick warm-up.

Holiday Brunch Ideas

Get your home in tip-top shape before the holidays with our must-try projects from HGTV’s Holiday House.

Frigidaire Gallery Freestanding Induction Range helps you get your holiday meals to the table faster. The induction cook top has a Quick Boil feature that brings water to a boil in less than 2 minutes. The oven also has a 6-minute preheat, so you get all of your dishes in faster. Since induction heats the pan and not the cook top, spills can’t burn to the surface, reducing overall cleaning time. Induction cooking uses the pan as a heat source rather than the cook top, creating more versatile, efficient and responsive results. You will also be able to keep all of your side dishes warm in the Keep Warm Zone that keeps food warm until everything — and everyone — is ready.
