We on the color team debated vigorously about the worthiness of a traditional Valentine’s Day color for February’s Color of the Month. Some of us wanted to throw all of our eggs in Cupid’s basket, but others were feeling an egg of a different type…

Happy New Year, Design Happens readers! One of our first official posts of 2013 was announcing January’s Color of the Month pick as voted on by the editors here at HGTV.com. Did you see it? Gold came out on top! And I don’t want to brag or anything, but I totally pitched it. Victory is so sweet. To kick off this year’s Mood Board Monday posts, I’m taking a cue from our winning color.

If you can remember, we chose pink champagne as our Color of the Month last January. We felt it was fresh, bubbly and the perfect hue to bring us into the new year. Exactly a year later, I still feel the same way about this soft and feminine shade of pink. So, raise a glass, if you will, to pink champagne. Cheers!

I’ve featured some really bold and vivid colors for Mood Board Monday, like electric blue, fuchsia and fire engine red. This week, as people start winding down for the holidays, I’m going to bring my color selection down a few notches, too. How about something a little more soothing and subdued to ring in the week before Christmas?

I know we’ve been talking a lot lately about trying something new this holiday season. You know, trading out that tired red and green for something a little more modern and unexpected like violet, hot pink or white. Well, as much as I love these new, fresh Christmas combos taking over the stores (hey, I have a purple tree myself!), I’m still partial to the classic red and green that feels tied to the holiday. I know as soon as I see those two colors together that I can start finding candy canes, gingerbread houses and holiday tunes in the background of every place I go. Sigh…don’t you just love the holidays?

Well, I think Grant’s opinion of burgundy is pretty clear on his bio page, but that didn’t stop me from making my opinion of burgundy just as known. (Sorry, Grant — look away!) With Thanksgiving only days away, I wanted to feature just the right color, something warm and comforting yet rich and sophisticated. Hello, burgundy! It’s the color of Pinot noir, cranberry sauce and seasonal blooms on a Thanksgiving table.

I may be getting a little ahead of the game (or maybe not), but I’m in complete holiday mode. Here at HGTV.com, we’ve been working on holiday content all summer, so I’m ready to actually celebrate Christmas during the season. You’ll notice when you peek through this year’s holiday galleries and projects that we’ve mixed in some new, non-traditional palettes. Icy purple is one of my favorite modern holiday hues. It brings color to chilly, wintry surroundings.

PAST MOOD BOARD MONDAYS:
Happy Monday, everyone! This week, I’m reporting from High Point, N.C. where I’m soaking up all the beautiful furnishings and design trends at High Point Market with the HGTV editorial team. While making our way through the showrooms, we’ve noticed several color, texture, pattern and accessory trends that we can’t wait to share with you later this week. But in the meantime, check out this autumnal-inspired hue that I’ve seen floating around from showroom to showroom in a variety of styles. I first spotted it at Global Views and it became the inspiration behind today’s mood board. The color amber is a mixture of yellow, brown and orange, taking its inspiration from amber stones. It’s so warm and cozy, don’t you think?

PAST MOOD BOARD MONDAY POSTS:
There’s something about this refreshing, summery shade of purple that makes me feel kind of guilty for rushing the season along and hoping for an early fall. Hey, it’s been HOT here, people. I’m dying for some below-90 days, even if that means giving up my warm-weather wardrobe that I love so much. But then I remembered dear ole’ Rhapsody in Pantone’s Fall 2012 Fashion Color Report. Keep your pastels out, because they’re not going anywhere. (Yay!)

Pastels are going to be huge this fall, especially when layered with richer colors and neutrals, like charcoal gray. What’s your take on lilac? Tell us below!
Through the process of researching our September Color of the Month and compiling inspiring interiors and decor in this shade, I came across some pretty interesting online debates that verged on hostile. Apparently, defining this color can stir up some heat. Surprising for such a peaceful color. (You’d think we’d picked fire engine red.) Is it possible that a greater internal struggle surfaces not when asking “To be or not to be” but rather…
