We at HGTV love color — you know that. So of course, I had to highlight a news item that is, well, at its core — all about color.

Lady Gaga‘s new fragrance, Fame, is black. Now, I’m not referring to its packaging (yes, it’s black too) — I’m talking about the fluid itself! It’s black, people (it says so right on the box). It’s the first-ever perfume to be a color that, when sprayed, turns clear (don’t worry, you won’t stain your clothes).

Gaga partnered with Coty Beauty to create the one-of-a-kind perfume. Though skeptical at first that it could even be done, Coty Beauty executives are now crediting Gaga as the driving force behind one of the most important innovations in the fragrance industry in 20-years.

Whether you’re a Lady Gaga fan or not, don’t you find the new color technology rather intriguing?

It’s officially the dog days of summer, at least it is here at HGTV headquarters. The temperatures have been coming in over 100 degrees and everyone has taken to the air conditioning. When it’s sweltering outside, you probably think of hot colors like Pantone’s Tangerine Tango, or maybe an intense chili pepper red. But this month we’re making a case for what might seem an unusual choice for July: Driftwood Grey.

I know what you’re thinking, grey? For summer? But bear with me. Instead of thinking of stark, cold, wintery tones, picture the weather-beaten, sun-warmed grey of boardwalks and beach houses. We love how it pairs with sunny hues, but it looks equally great set off by neutrals.

Lili’s Driftwood Grey Pinterest board won our team over with its great use of the color, inside and out. When pitching her choice, she summed it up perfectly, “Driftwood grey evokes coastal climates for me, particularly the New England coastline. I think of sunbaked and wind-battered shingles on Cape Cod and gorgeous pieces of water-worn, knotty tree trunks. This is the lighter, breezier cousin of flannel grey and perfect for summer.”

What do you think? Are you feeling Driftwood Grey in the heat of this sultry summer?

Every month, the “Color Team” here at HGTV headquarters meets to battle it out. Our mission? Pitch a color for the upcoming color of the month, and stop at nothing until your color gets the crown.

We come armed with our Pinterest pinboards and even wearing our colors. And after debating the merits of every color under the sky (a Pantone Cerulean Blue sky, of course), one color reigns supreme. Or, in the case of June…several colors. Because this month? We’re breaking the rules and setting your retinas ablaze with neon hues.

Neon! It was the pinboard that ruled supreme, and it’s everywhere right now. Our own Briana was ahead of the curve this spring with her neon accent round up, and Farima just rolled out a gorgeous neon photo gallery. Erin Loechner has us eying neon spray paint with her latest how-to. Even some of our favorite design bloggers are on board the neon train—everyone from Oh Joy!  to Coco + Kelley have been inspired by these highlighter tones. And me? I have a neon yellow pedicure and just picked up a neon pink retro style swimsuit for the pool. It’s very Cyndi Lauper-meets-Esther Williams, trust me.

It’s a sizzling color that makes a statement, so tell us: would you incorporate neon into your décor?

This week, I – along with a couple of other editors - have traveled from Knoxville to New York City for ICFF, where there are rows and rows of contemporary furnishings to drool over. Aside from seeing a lot of up-and-coming trends, we got to meet with designer Jonathan Adler at the Kohler “We Love Color” press event. We got to speak with him briefly and check out his colorful sinks he designed for Kohler. But what caught my eye the most were the bathtub benches he specifically designed just for the event.

The Piccadilly Yellow color, one of four special edition colors, really popped, and the anchor pillow paired with the other patterned pillows made the bench the center of attention – aside from Jonathan, of course.

It was a blast to get a sneak peek at the kitchen and bathroom sink colors. I think it’s safe to say it was the highlight of ICFF.

In previous months, we’ve introduced you to colors that you may not have previously considered using in your home. Grapecopper and coral were big hits; however, pink champagne and mint green received mixed reviews. We think we’ve hit on a color for May that’s definitely trending, can be used either as a neutral or as a dramatic punch of color and is undeniably timeless.

Wanna know what it is?

Sometimes I think fashion has the edge when it comes to new trends. Whatever the flavor of the day, it seems there’s a thrifty or cautious way to incorporate it into your look. Take for example the explosion of neon accessories I’m seeing everywhere. Where fashionistas have belts, socks and manicures, there’s not always an equivalent for home decor enthusiasts. That said, I think I’ve found some fun and relatively inexpensive/low-commitment ways to inject a little neon into your life.

I enjoy all of these goodies, but I’m the most sad to have missed out on the neon extension cords in college. For some reason, dorm rooms have a real shortage of outlets, and even with power strips, I feel like I constantly had to use extension cords for things like the TV. Some hot pink and electric green cords really would have jazzed up the joint. (And maybe the shock of color would have kept me awake while I was studying for finals!)

Walk into any store in Anytown, USA and it’s impossible to miss: saturated, stage-stealing colors are everywhere. Maybe it’s in reaction to the hopeful upturn in the economy or maybe we’re all just over the greige (lookin’ at you, Restoration Hardware).  Either way, I’m tickled pink by the season’s hot hues and we’ve picked one of the hottest to feature this month.
