Of course there’s something to sleek, modern design — but for me, I can’t get enough of homes where there’s something spectacular in every corner — where your eyes are full of wonder everywhere you look. A warm, rich and welcoming atmosphere just gets me excited. That’s the look I aspire to have in my house, and it’s the look I’m drooling over in this picture made at Designer Scot Meacham Wood’s home.

Scot is one of fifty designers featured in the new book, Designers at Home: Personal Reflections on Stylish Living. The book takes readers on a guided tour through the homes of renowned designers, who share their thoughts on gracious living and how they bring their professional philosophies home.

What’s better than great design? Great design for a great cause. More than 20 interior designers collaborated to turn a dated, 1950s colonial estate into a decked-out showhouse in Washington, D.C.’s Spring Lake neighborhood, all to benefit Children’s National Medial Center.  If you live in the DC area, there’s still time to buy tickets and tour the amazing 10,000 square foot home this weekend — it’s open to the public through Monday, May 14.

Can’t make it to DC? Check out a few of our favorite spaces from the home.  (See photos of the entire home right here.)

Playing off the “old” Washington flavor of the Spring Valley home, designers Blake Dunlevy and Gina Benincasa of D&A Dunlevy Landscapers used bright azaleas and peonies to accent the boxwoods bookending the front entry of this stately residence.

Designer Sharon Kleinman of Transitions wanted the master bedroom to be serene and sensual, so she added rich chocolate walls, her own custom-designed headboard and an antique wedding cabinet alongside textured, neutral bedding.

British modernist Basil Bunting once said, “To appreciate present conditions, collate them with those of antiquity.” This reflection could easily be the personal mantra of Nashville-based architect Eric Stengel. Stengel, a Renaissance man schooled in the disciplines of fine arts, decorative arts and, of course, architecture, keeps the work of the masters at the core of his designs while embracing modern conveniences and materials.

Eric’s classically-designed and meticulously executed luxurious estates inspire awe, because they are breathtakingly gorgeous, as well as academically correct and technically perfect. An ideal marriage of beauty and brains, if you will. Eric engages us in Classical ideology in this week’s tour of a Tennessee mansion he built in the 18th-century Georgian style. He offers an enlightening explanation of the three most important aspects of the Classical language in architectural design: its story-telling ability, its ability to  evolve and compliment modern times, along with its meaning and worth to those who live in and work on this tradition.

We enjoyed spending time with Emily Henderson, host of the show Secrets From a Stylist, at our design bloggers luncheon in Manhattan last week. (You can read about the 40 bloggers, including Design Happens contributors like Emily, who joined us at our New York offices here.) Before winning HGTV Design Star, Emily enjoyed a busy career as a photo-shoot stylist for top lifestyle and design publications. Now she’s even busier.

Read on to learn more about which designer has influenced Emily the most and what she finds impossible to pass up at flea markets.

We asked her our five big Qs.

1. Which designers influenced you?

First, Sister Parish, because she is traditional, but classic. She feeds that early American that I love.

Albert Hadley modernized Sister Parish’s work. The projects they did together were a lot like what I do – a combination of traditional elements with modern forms.

I also love Billy Baldwin for his glamor. He started designing a classic, timeless look and introduced modern into it. It became glamorous and sexy, but with a traditionally grounded look.

Terri Casner is the founder and Vice-President of Product Development for Sorella Home, a company that excels in making beautiful, handcrafted tableware with a story. In June we partnered with Sorella Home for Freebie Fridays to give away a set of their Botanica collection. We wanted to know more about Terri’s creative process and Sorella Home’s new collection inspired by Ernest Hemingway. Read what Terri has to say about running a small business and how her background in the fashion industry inspires her designs.

1. What got you into designing tableware and home decor?

I began my career in the fashion industry which gave me a special appreciation for textile design. Although I loved fashion, I found myself being emotionally drawn to home decor. I was given the opportunity to blend fashion and home decor together by designing original products that adorn the home and create beautiful tablescapes.

2. What inspires your designs?
