I discovered DwellStudio bedding a decade ago by stumbling into one of those perks of living in New York City: the sample sale. At the time I’d never spent more than $30 on a set of sheets (thank you Ikea!), but I immediately knew that this bedding, with its not-your-mom’s patterns and material quality, would be an investment I wouldn’t regret.

Look at those ram door pulls! And right: Christiane Lemieux

Now, more than ten years later, the company is opening its first flagship store in SoHo. Founder and Creative Director Christiane Lemieux has expanded the DwellStudio line to include furniture, home accessories, baby and children’s furnishings, along with their bedding staples. I got a chance to preview their new space and see their line of furniture in person for the first time. Such a treat!

Bedding display on shelves painted the perfect shade of slate gray.

The store feels as if you’ve stepped into someone’s very well curated home with vintage finds mixed in among the company’s line of modern products. I am still gaga for the bedding and can attest to its resilience over time. That first set I invested in still looks as fresh today as it did in 2001. It would even work well with any of the newer patterns. The sofas are luxurious and classically neutral enough to play well with pieces you already own.  The baby and children’s line is darling without being saccharine. But most impressive to me was the wall of DwellStudio fabrics which seem to have been designed to let you mix patterns like a pro despite not actually being one.

I couldn't fit this sofa in my bag, but I tried.

If you’re in New York, or plan to be, you can check out the store yourself starting today. Tell me in the comments if you have any designers that you still love after all these years.

I’ve been an admirer of DwellStudio’s great bedding forever, but did you know they have a new furniture collection? Founder Christiane Lemieux wrote a post on the DwellStudio blog about what the design process was like, if you’re curious.

This George Sofa has lovely lines, but honestly, it’s all about the Batavia Citrine pattern for me. I’m not usually a fan of couches in anything other than solid colors, but Christiane says in her blog post that “We worked very hard to make it easy for anyone – professional or not – to pull together a beautiful layered look,” and I think that’s just what they’ve done here.

Finding a pattern that you adore can be a blessing and a curse. Of course you’re thrilled that you’ve got a gem on your hands, but the life-cycle in the interiors market is nearly the same as in the fashion world: one season. After that, you’re out of luck.

Dwell Studios has listened to their customers who’ve pleaded to have retired patterns back again, and responded with three favorites from their archives. The Trellis pattern above is one of those three that’s on the shelves again with a few tweaks. I quite like the muted color and am gaga over the accent pillow.

Growing up, I always preferred boy friends over girl friends. I suppose there was something about the catty sleepovers and Barbie swaps that just didn’t register with me. (Not to mention I had two older sisters with their share of hormones in the house!)

Yet now, as an adult, I flock to girls whenever possible. I simply love watching women becoming empowered individuals and utilizing their talents to inspire others. And although there are dozens of women designers I could profile, my favorite five are below (oh it’s so hard to choose faves!):

1. Jeanine Hays, AphroChic
You might recognize Jeanine’s name from her HGTV column (hello, Jeanine!), but she also happens to run a successful textile and pattern-based homewares shop that continually blows my mind. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more on-trend pattern designer than Jeanine.
Love: The Vibe Pillow in Cerulean/White ($150)

2. Lisa Jones, Pigeon Toe
Portland-based designer Lisa Jones wins my heart for her heirloom goods and eye for simplicity. Her love for pottery is evident in the quality of pieces she curates for Pigeon Toe, and she continually produces top-notch ceramic work that will leave you breathless. Promise.
Love: Faceted Hanging Tray ($60)

3. Elisabeth Dunker, Fine Little Day
I escape to Elisabeth’s Swedish shop often and continually swoon over her quirky, illustrative style. From wallpaper to cutting boards, her work demands attention in the most subtle of ways.
Love: ‘Up’ Cutting Board ($33)

4. Christiane Lemieux, DwellStudio
DwellStudio is no stranger to HGTV.com (Sabrina Soto loves Christiane’s toss pillows for Target!), and we applaud her for juggling an active family life while maintaining a socially responsible (and deservingly successful!) brand.
Love: Draper Stripe Rug in Ink/Cream ($125)

5. Karen Young, Hammocks & High Tea
Inspired by tropical design, Karen’s skilled eye is evident in the patterned Dopp kits, drawer liners and tea towels she lovingly designs. Talk about bringing vacation home with you!
Love: Hammam Table Runner ($120)

Keep up the great work, ladies—we’ll be rooting you this month…and beyond!
