The Trend: High Contrast
“I continue to see high contrast as a very strong trend this fall,” says designer Traci Zeller. “The soft, muddy colors that were so popular have evolved into cleaner brights. To get this look, go white or black with basic pieces, then add a bright color of your choice,” Traci says. Here, she used a black entryway organizer as the backdrop for bright and white accents.

Fall’s flying by, and I’ve done a lousy job of leaf peeping. I should be taking walks in Central Park or driving up to the Berkshires, but all of my usual fall frolicking has been curtailed by me catching a nasty cold. I think I have a solution, though. While some of my colleagues are at High Point Market right now, scoping out all the amazing exhibits, I have my favorite finds from the Las Vegas Market I attended in August socked away.

If I owned this Company C crimson landscape rug that I loved in Las Vegas, I wouldn’t even need to step outside my door to peep the foliage at all. It’s like a beautiful painting under your feet, just like all the real fall leaves that have fluttered to the ground.

We polled our amazing Facebook fans and compiled their four best tips for easy, affordable fall decor along with some from our trend-watching arsenal. Get our must-do ideas, then tell us how you’re decorating for fall.

Declutter Before You Decorate
Getting organized might not be the most thrilling part of a fall spruce-up, but it is one of the most important. It’s also pretty darn satisfying: You’ll feel a lot better about being cooped up indoors when you can 1) actually see your cute new throw pillows and 2) find fall clothes and decorations.

Organize what you plan to keep, and get rid of what you no longer need. Facebook fan Carla is planning to donate items to alleviate clutter and highlight her new bedroom accessories. “My bedding will consist of a leopard blanket and newly-purchased red pillows, and the rest of the space will be simple and clutter-free.”

Switch Out the Accents
If you keep your larger pieces neutral, it’s easy and affordable to change the accents every season. Facebook fan Sandy uses her townhome’s neutral walls and furniture as a backdrop for seasonal accessories: “Each season of the year, I switch out all the accents: area rugs, throws, toss pillows and candles. Fall’s colors in my home are russet, gold, rust and dark green,” she says. Even one small change makes a difference: “I put an orange pillow on the sofa – instant autumn!,” says Facebook fan David.

I LOVE Halloween. Sure, it’s hard not to feel good about a holiday devoted to costumes, pumpkins and excessive amounts of candy, but I’ve been plotting my oh-so-sinister Halloween party over on Pinterest for weeks now. I can already taste the candy corn and roasted pumpkin seeds!

But as much as I’m gaga over the spooky season, I like to keep my decorations less Nightmare on Elm Street and more harvest-inspired, for two reasons: I can put fun fall decor up as soon as the first chilly nights hit and leave it up through Thanksgiving. I’m starting this autumn’s display with this uber-chic silhouette pumpkin.

Color of the Month: October 2010

In September, we gave Color of the Month status to the bright, beautiful persimmon. It seemed to perfectly epitomize the point between summer and fall and, oh, the delicious accessorizing possibilities! That choice took two meetings and lots of wrangling. Though by the end, it was obvious what the color should be.

For October, the choice was much easier. It was a color our team loved for September, which met all our rules except being available in stores. (Remember, our criteria for picking colors are: (a) it has to be seasonal (b) up-and-coming (c) and easy to find.)
