Congratulations to this giveaway’s winner, Ariane! Come back October 17 for another great giveaway.

While others are busy lamenting the (unofficial) end of summer, I’ll admit I can’t wait for fall. Summer is great, sure, but fall has a lot going for it, too: perfect temperatures, brilliantly-hued leaves, hearty soups and stews and cozy fall decor updates.

Since evening light is dwindling and we’ll all be spending more time indoors, this is the perfect time to add style overhead with an updated light fixture. That’s why we partnered with Lights.com to give one lucky reader this industrial take on the classic Sputnik light fixture:

Sputnik Chandelier - Lights.com

This trendy twist on vintage lighting would look great atop a dining table or kitchen island, in an entryway or as the focal point of a master bedroom. Edison bulbs give this ceiling light a glowy ambiance, while the sleek black finish offers an industrial edge.

HGTV Handmade’s Crafters on YouTube (L to R): MegAllanColeCrafts, HGTVCrafternoon, simpleDIYs and Anneorshine

The team over at HGTV Handmade (some of YouTube’s best crafters) has a friendly competition going on with their “White Craft Challenge.” Much like the renowned HGTV Star “White Room Challenge,” where competitors must each decorate an all-white room with very limited supplies, the stars of HGTV Handmade are each decorating super snooze-worthy “white” lamps following just two requirements: One, they can only use what they have in their current possession (no trips to the craft store allowed!) and two, when the lamp is finished, it must still be able to function as a light source.

Watch as this fun challenge gets underway:

(You can watch the complete White Craft Challenge Series as it unfolds by visiting the HGTV Handmade channel on YouTube.)

Fortunately for you, both this week and next, we will be giving away the impressive lamps that were created for this competition (two this week, two next week). Today, we’re offering up the lamps crafted by Marianne and Meg (below).

Congratulations to this giveaway’s random winners Melissa, Lorraine and Char. (Check your email!) Come back next month for another great giveaway.

I always feel just a little bit calmer when I step out the door into my garden. Checking on blossom progress, discovering a new vegetable sprout and even, yes, weeding mellows me out. If gardening isn’t your thing, though, there are many ways to make your yard into a sanctuary, like setting a reading bench in the shade or adding a simple decorative outdoor fountain.

For this Freebie Friday giveaway, three lucky Design Happens readers will win their choice from the three fountains below from LampsPlus.com. No backyard? These prizes would make beautiful indoor fountains, too.

Lamps Plus - Beautiful Indoor and Outdoor Fountains From LampsPlus.com

Relaxation awaits! Each of three winners may choose between (left to right) the modern Column Solar-Powered Fountain, the Aged Bronze Buddha Indoor/Outdoor Fountain and the Seven Cascades Cutaway Outdoor Fountain.

Congratulations to this month’s random winner, Kristin! Check back on April 4 for another great giveaway.

I’m sensing signs of spring all around East Tennessee: My yard’s first crocuses and daffodils are starting to bloom and temperatures are climbing, if only a little. That’s all the encouragement I need to start thinking about spring parties. A set of table linens in fresh spring hues is a great way to get ready for that first warm-weather event, and this month we’re loving Coyuchi’s new line of natural-fiber tabletop pieces featuring colors inspired by flowers and plants. The company even has a collection inspired by our March Color of the Month, Orchid:

Organic Table Linens From Coyuchi
One lucky reader will win 1 set of napkins, 1 table runner and 4 placemats from the Coyuchi tabletop collection of their choice. Read on to enter for a chance to win this great prize!

Congratulations to our winner Josh, who loves to mix up pumpkin martinis with a cinnamon and sugar rim. Come back on November 1 for another great giveaway.

I tend to go a little overboard with Halloween party preparations. Partly because I’m a lifestyle editor and partly because Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday, I’ve been thinking about pumpkins, DIY costumes and creepy food for months. But you can still have a low-stress Halloween gathering even if you haven’t planned a thing until this very minute. Yes, really.

Here’s your game plan: Make a sweet and a savory snack (say, maple nut popcorn and creepy chips with guacamole) and both kid- and adult-friendly punches. Kids will love our cemetery slime punch (complete with gummy worms!), and adults will be crazy for this Pumpkin Spice Sangria served inside a pumpkin. For a large group, ask guests to bring an additional appetizer or drink to share.

To help you out with last-minute decorations, we’ve partnered with Target to give one lucky Design Happens reader a free party pack complete with plates, napkins, straws, decorations and more. Read on for the full Pumpkin Spice Sangria recipe, plus enter for a chance to win this party pack.

Update: Congratulations to our winner Christy, who says her spring DIY plans include painting the entry room walls and the front door. Come back on April 5 for another great giveaway!

We all have those DIY projects that don’t go quite according to plan: paint colors that looked so much greener on the chip, cut pieces of wood that are a quarter-inch too small for that coffee table, stencils gone awry. Vecco Studio offers a DIY alternative to expensive designer rugs: You choose from 13 colorants, various rug sizes and more than 150 stencils to create your own designs. The best part? Update 10/15/12:  Congratulations to this month’s winner, Donna, who says she likes to make her Halloween decorations “as scary as skeletons, but my 4-year-old twins have always been around those at Halloween time so they don’t see them as scary.” Congratulations, Donna! Check back next month for another great freebie.

There are two types of Halloween folk: The ones who deck their yard out in fake blood, life-sized zombies and motion-activated vampires and the ones who stick to jolly pumpkins and mildly creepy ghosts.

Since I can’t watch a horror movie without developing a new irrational fear, you can probably guess which camp I fall into. But whether you go for the blood and guts or would rather keep it PG, you’ll love this month’s giveaway: a collection of outdoor Halloween decorations from Grandin Road.

First on the giveaway list: This creepy animated pumpkin. Sure, it looks innocent enough, but flip on the switch and it turns “evil” — complete with a diabolical laugh — when unsuspecting folks walk by.

It’s finally spring, or as I like to call it, spend-every-waking-hour-its-not-raining-outdoors season. Spring, as you may have guessed, is my favorite time of the year: everything comes alive, new flower pop up every day, and it’s warm enough to read a book or eat a meal outdoors.

One lucky winner will be able to do both those things in their yard with today’s prize: Two outdoor benches from outdoor furniture and outdoor shed retailer Lifetime. Made of engineered wood, these sturdy benches won’t fade, warp or rot, so they’ll look good for years to come. But wait, there’s more! When you’re ready to eat dinner, turn the bench back upwards….

Lifetime Convertible Bench Upright
…and the bench also becomes a table! Push two together and you have a space large enough for family dining. Cool, huh? And since the bench-slash-table does double-duty, it will work just as well for an itsy-bitsy backyard as it will for a spacious one.

For last Friday’s freebie giveaway, we asked you to tell us your best holiday entertaining ideas to be entered for a random chance to win this chic faux-shagreen tray from SkateModerne.  You had some great tips — here are some of our favorites.

Skate Moderne Logo Tray

Delegate, Delegate, Delegate
Most friends don’t mind helping out a little, especially if they’re among the first to arrive. “I like to have a friend or family member in charge of welcoming people when they arrive, helping them with their coats, purses, food set up and getting them settled in with a drink…even leading them to mix and mingle if necessary,” says Jan T.  Or ask guests to bring a homemade dish, like reader cnpeyton does.

Get Together Ahead of Time
December too busy? Celebrate with friends in the summer, like two of our commenters do. “Since the holidays are so busy with family, we have a garden party in August with decorations and Christmas carols and many courses of food under a tent in my friend’s lovely yard. It’s less stressful for everyone, and there’s better weather,” says Andrea.  And Sylvie R. looks forward to her Christmas in July party every year: “We all dress up in thick, tacky sweaters, reindeer headbands, etc., and enjoy making gingerbread, peppermint schapps-infused hot cocoa and a white elephant gift exchange. Who says holidays only come once a year?”

Host a Traveling Party
Don’t want to play host all night? Try a progressive party like reader SweetLiz and her family members: “We go from house to house so we can see each other’s decorated homes and share a drink, snack or dessert. Sometimes we start with a brunch, sometimes with a late lunch. We try to do this a week before Christmas.”

Don’t Forget the Details
Little touches will put your party over the top — like simple homemade appetizers instead of store-bought or fresh greenery from the yard. And Felipe33 reminds us that “a must for entertaining is a clean and fresh-smelling half bath. This can be a deal breaker.”

Relax and Have Fun
So, you didn’t have a chance to make letterpress place cards or get out your fondue set. It’s okay! Once the party starts, go with what you’ve got and don’t sweat the unfinished details.  As wise reader Pat D says, “If you are enjoying yourself, most likely your guests will too.”  And as this week’s random winner, vintageviolet, reminds us, “Holidays are for spending time with friends and family, so don’t get so stressed that you forget that part!”

Congratulations to this week’s winner! She will have 2 weeks to respond to our emails before we pick another random winner.
