Other than having the best cookies and milk (and a super-chic cookie plate), what’s the best way to make sure Santa stops by tonight? It’s today’s final handmade holiday idea: a candle-lit runway.

Christmas Eve Santa Runway

To make, set votive candles atop rock salt “snow” in glass jars or hurricanes. Then line them up on your steps alongside some greenery and wait for the man in red. (While you wait, why not take a virtual tour of our favorite decked-out holiday homes?) Happy Christmas!

The part of the holiday season that fills me with the most anxiety and self-loathing is not visiting family, no. It’s wrapping presents. Things start out okay, but then somehow my corners are all crumpled, there are visible seams because I used a sheet of wrapping paper that was too small, and there are strands of my hair (eww, I know) stuck to every piece of Scotch tape. I give up and start buying lots of gift bags and tissue paper. THE END. This year I’ve got a new plan: Make beautiful fabric poppies like the ones I found on Creature Comforts and plant them atop every present to hide my wrapping flaws.

They take about five minutes to make, and look how they glow against that simple brown paper! Plus, there are so many more holiday uses for them. You can attach them to pins or glue them to headbands for festive party accessories, you can use them on your table as decorative placeholders, or even make garland or ornaments with them. If you’re looking for even more ways to jazz up your presents, check out some of our ideas here. Cut! That’s a wrap.

I haven’t even started thinking about doing my holiday gift shopping yet, but I’m not worried because along with our own excellent gift guide on HGTV.com, I’ve got an ace up my sleeve. That ace is called Svpply. If you’re not already familiar with it, think of Svpply like Pinterest, but for products. It’s tempting to call it a “social shopping site,” although I think the better way to describe it is a “retail bookmarking and recommendations” site with a clean, minimalistic design. You create an account, and drag the “Buy Later” bookmarklet into your browser’s toolbar. Now when you search the shopping sites you love and spot something you want to remember, you can click the “Buy Later” button, briefly describe the item, and it gets clipped and saved to your Svpply.

svpply

This is handy enough, but there’s also a social element. You can follow friends, stores, or even strangers with great taste, to see which products they’ve added to their accounts. Not to mention that there are features that allow you to see the trending products across the site and Svpply’s own Editor’s Pick. Best of all for this time of year are the gift guides, broken down by price point and type of product, and the new ability to make a set of items (like a Pinboard) — say, “In-Law Gift Ideas” — and either keep the set private (good if the people you’re shopping for are also on Svpply) or mark it public to share with other users (like I plan to do with my own wish list, hint hint). Svpply’s always been handy for my Daily Delight design spotting, but I think it might just make me the best Secret Santa of all time.

Are you on Svpply, or are you planning to join? If so, leave your user name in the comments! Happy gift hunting, all.

What cool dad didn’t have a moustache or beard back in the day? (Unless your dad was of the G-Men or Buddy Holly glasses era.) Some of the best (and most hilarious) pictures of my father involve bell-bottoms, retro, floral button-downs and a killer moustache to top it off. He said sayonara to his groovy ‘stache once I arrived into the world, and a scratchy, “Pat the Bunny“-type beard became his face’s newest addition. Once a thing of the past, moustaches and beards have made a triumphant and glorious return. With Father’s Day just around the corner, we have some moustache-proud handmade/craft gift ideas Dad will love. Whether he sports a Tom Selleck stache or something a little more like Salvador Dali, let him know he and his facial hair (past or current) are appreciated.

While I tell my Mom how much I love her every day, I’m happy to spend an entire day letting her know how much I truly appreciate her. Mother’s Day gifts I made years ago include macaroni necklaces, tie-dye sand art sculptures, gorgeous artwork (from cartoon coloring books) and plastic bead bracelets. (Those necklaces and bracelets are still in her jewelry box!) Dad was always there to help position the sand art funnel or to hold up the other end of the necklace string, because he knew how important it was for these gifts to be perfect for Mom. So attention Dads, if you’re looking for kid-friendly handmade gifts to craft with your little ones, here are five of my favorites you’ll have fun making together.

Handmade Mother's Day Banner

This handmade “mom” banner is a pretty way to show mom much she’s loved on her special day. It’s easy to make, and with sweet, personalized messages handwritten on the back, she’ll treasure this keepsake for years to come.

I remember when my mother first taught me how to “properly” wrap presents. Cut the paper in a perfectly straight line, firmly crease the edges and line everything up…including the tape. Add a small bow and a simple gift tag, and the gift is ready. Because I’m usually up until the wee hours on Christmas Day getting things finished, my gift wrapping tends towards the uninspired.

This year, however, I’m spending some quality time with my craft box and adding just as much love and care to the exterior of the package as I put into shopping for it. Even if your family opens all the presents on Christmas Eve, you still have a few hours for inspiration…and a quick trip to the craft store. So have fun adorning your presents with unusual papers, candy, flowers, antique brooches, natural sprigs from your yard and more. Then you too will achieve the double gift smile: when it’s given, and when it’s opened.

When it comes to gifts, I’m a firm believer in going big or going home. This can often super-suck each holiday season when trying to one-up the previous year’s mega-present. A self-proclaimed procrastinator when it comes to shopping, last year was an exception as I was able to order my that’s-so-clever-I-must-have-it showstopper online weeks, even months before the big day. So just what did I get for both that top drawer individual and myself? Custom Muppets from the Muppet Whatnot Workshop. Whatchutawkinbowtwillis?

Yep, I said Muppet. This brilliant concept is housed on FAO Schwarz. With a few clicks, you can create your very own Jim Henson style doppelganger through an assortment of characteristic categories; they even arrive in vinyl drawstring bags, which eliminate the need for gift-wrapping.

In the days of email, iChat, Skype and text-everything, a hand-written note is still a treasure. And if you’re looking for a good reason to rush out to the stationary store, John Derian’s new line of note cards for Dempsey and Carroll is just that. Derian, who is a favorite decoupage artist and well known for his chic decorative plates and boxes, offers up a lovely collection pairing hand-bordered cotton-paper cards with envelopes lined with the designer’s signature patterns ($60 for a set of 10).

This marks Derian’s first foray into stationary, and I hope it’s not his last. Available in six graphic prints, including Water Lilies and Sea Urchin, each can be engraved in a complementary color, making them a terrific holiday gift to give and receive.

We’re down to our 2nd to last Giveaway from our friends at PartyLite.  Last week’s Coast Lights set went out to Kelly G. with her answer:

The things in my house I am most proud of are the ultrasound photos I had framed after having my children. I was able to pick out some pretty, stylish mats and frames, and they are very cool, personal, and fun conversation starters!

This week we’ve got a set of 3 PartyLite Blue Waves Candle Holder with a box of tealights to go with them.
