October 31st is right around the corner! It is such a fun holiday to celebrate with decorating, dressing up and hosting parties. Here are a few festive, creative ideas to get you in the Halloween spirit.

1. Host a Halloween Cupcake Decorating Party

Gather the kids, cupcakes and toppings and have a ball! This easy, inexpensive party theme is sure to please kids and adults. The TomKat Studio printable party collection I designed for this theme adds the finishing touches to tie it all together.

2. BOO Your Neighbors

Are you familiar with “BOOing”? If not, you should be! It is such a fun tradition. Secretly leave Halloween goodies on your neighbor’s front porch, along with this free printable sign and instructions. The idea is that they will then BOO another neighbor and the whole neighborhood will get in the Halloween spirit. We were BOOed this weekend, and we’re baking tonight to keep it going. The witching hour is said to be the time of night when supernatural  beings — witches, ghosts and the like — are most active. I’m planning to celebrate the year’s most powerful witching hour — Halloween night — by setting the table with these diminutive brooms.

Witch's Broom Place Cards

The best part? I can, ahem, conjure up these mini flying machines from things I already have on hand: raffia, twigs and brown paper bags.  To make, just cut and affix raffia to the twigs, cut the paper name tags and write in your best spooky script (preferably in blood-red ink.) Raffia and Twigs

Use them with a  fall-themed table setting, or play up the creepy factor with a witch-themed tablescape, complete with potion-ready apothecary jars and “poison” apples.

Send the brooms home with guests as a favor, or reuse the leftovers for a Hogwarts-themed bash.

It’s finally October! Just like a light switch, the weather has turned cooler, crisper and spookier. During my trick-or-treating days, my friends and I would always choose to visit the homes that looked the scariest for a Halloween thrill. Plus, we figured the homes that went all-out on Halloween decor would have the best candy, too. (They did.) We’d come upon a terrifying and unexpected motion-activated cackling witch, classic decapitated human body parts or the occasional homeowner dressed as Freddy Krueger. We would always run home (myself typically in angel wings, go-go boots and a blonde wig) with our candy-filled pillowcases, hearts pounding yet dying to run back and be scared all over again. In honor of those memorable childhood days, here are two spook-tastic Halloween decorations perfect for your front yard. I’m confident your trick-or-treaters will love and be terrified of them.

These hand carved and painted tombstones are a creative way to add an eerie touch to your landscape for Halloween. You can personalize the front of the foam tombstones as much as you want or simply use ever-effective RIP acronym. After carving your drawing and adding a thin layer of spray paint and acrylic paint, they’re ready to be set up among dry leaves, pumpkins and other “unsettling” decor.

Scare guests as soon as they pull in the driveway with this flowing life-size ghost. Using inexpensive craft and hardware items, this ghost can be easily constructed and hung from a front or backyard tree or placed on the front porch for even more creepy appeal. Use a paint roller extension pole and yardsticks as the ghost’s “skeleton” and foam balls as the head and hands. Gauzy cheesecloth serves as the ghost’s ethereal body and will especially pick up flight on windy nights.

After I spotted this silhouette pumpkin on Design Happens last week, I was totally inspired to find ideas for black and white Halloween decorating and entertaining. I am loving what I’ve come across and thinking I may just have to go with this striking palette for my mantle this year. Do you think you could decorate for Halloween without orange? C’mon, get crazy!

Shelley from The House of Smiths shows us how to create a Halloween vignette of mostly black and white on a budget. This knotted black ribbon wreath immediately caught my eye on Pinterest. I love how simple, yet glamorous is it. Donna from Party Wishes added a few inexpensive touches to her porch to get in the mood for Halloween. And here’s the silhouette pumpkin tutorial featured on HGTV that inspired this post. Isn’t it fabulous?

The white foam pumpkin embellished with a decal and jewels is an easy project with a spooktacular result. My printable cupcake toppers lend to a glam black and white color scheme. Pair with a plastic spider for a creepy look. I spotted this gauze mummy wreath on Etsy and love it. Do you see the skeleton hands hanging down from it? Spooky. Spiders are a must when choosing this black and white theme for decorating or a party. This downloadable print is part of Shelley’s Halloween shelves.

These creepy plates are freaking me out! Scare your guests by covering up the illustrations with food only to reveal body parts while they’re eating. Talk about freaking out! These real scorpions mounted in a display box will gross everyone out. Living in Arizona, I’ve seen a few in real life, and it’s not pleasant. Need a party favor? How about sending your guests home with a tub of embalming cream? Good news, it’s pumpkin marshmallow scent. Yum. Greet your visitors with this life-size ghost that you can easily make yourself with this HGTV tutorial.

Have I inspired you to decorate with black and white this year or do you think orange is required for Halloween?
