For our September 30th giveaway, we wanted you to tell us about your Halloween decorating style. While your responses ranged from Rob Zombie horror (Have you seen his Woolite commercial?) to “pumpkin chic” , the majority of Design Happens fans go for kooky and kid-friendly. (Still, quite a few of you are traditionalists, committed to Dracula, Frankenstein and other classic horror spooks.)

Grandin Road - Velma and Evander Talking Busts - HGTV design blolg - Halloween decorations

Our winner, Kellie, didn’t share her decorating style, but she did say that Velma and Evander “would be so perfect” on her front porch. And would send neighborhood kids “flocking to”, not fleeing from her house. We’re confident Grandin Road‘s Interactive Talking Halloween Busts will do exactly that. As Teresa noted, “two heads are better than one.” That includes this stone-faced chatty pair with their flashing red eyes.

Kellie has two weeks to reply to our message to claim Velma and Evander before we randomly select a new winner.

You know that sound you just heard? That’s the same sound I heard when I first laid eyes on this week’s Freebie Friday. My jaw hitting the ground. (I’m trying not to drool on my keyboard as I craft this post.)

Some of us are blessed to inherit a family heirloom passed down through generations. Others of us may have the opportunity to gift a loved one a newly made unique piece of handcrafted or couture-quality furniture that is an instant heirloom. Modern History furniture offers exquisitely designed modern antiques that are works of art and are guaranteed to become treasured additions to any family’s decor.

Decorated Venetian Chest - Modern HIstory - HGTV design blog freebie friday

This week, one lucky winner will receive Modern History’s Decorated Venetian Chest. For a chance to win this stunning piece, answer this week’s question before 12/11c, Monday, September 19.

This week’s question: Forget what the dictionary says, how do you define an heirloom piece of furniture or decor? What are its essential qualities?

I learned from an early age about the decorative power of a beautiful table lamp. Growing up in Atlanta, I visited many a home with a gorgeously appointed sitting room or parlor that exuded that quintessential Southern charm. My friend’s moms were lovely hostesses who always produced a glass filled with sweet tea or ice-cold Coca-Cola within minutes of a guest’s arrival. Conversation flowed effortlessly in these intimate spaces beautifully lit by a perfect set of table lamps. (I can practically feel my Southern accent coming back just remembering those times.) Listen y’all, we all know good lighting can make or break a room. And that a table lamp is one of the easiest ways to update the look of a space. Well, we’ve partnered with The Southern Home, a company that specializes in elegant home furnishings filled with Southern charm, to bring you that perfect burst of brightness and beauty for a room in your home.

HGTV design blog - Table Lamp from The Southern Home - Freebie Fridays(left to right) Botanical Garden :: Marianna :: Babcock

One Design Happens reader will get to choose a table lamp from the three lovelies pictured here: Botanical Garden, Marianna or Babcock. To enter for a chance to win, simply leave us a comment in the field below before 12/11c Monday, September 12.

This week’s question: Why do you love a beautiful table lamp? Are you all about mood lighting? Without the right table lamp, would you be at a loss for a favorite place to read a good book? Do you have a soft spot for lamps with curvaceous shades and intricate design details?

In our September 2nd giveaway, we wanted to know how you would incorporate an indoor/outdoor ceramic garden stool like the Vine Design from Outer Banks Trading Group in your home decor. Based on your comments, these gems are so appealing and versatile, there would be little chance for it to collect dust.

Freebie Fridays

Our lucky winner this week is Colleen, who gets her pick of one of the five colors pictured above. Colleen said, “I would place it on our deck for drinks, but once the snow flies, I would bring it in the house as an accent table either in the living room or master bedroom!” Cheers to you, Colleen!

As always, our winner has two weeks to reply to our message before we select a different random winner.

When beauty meets function, it’s truly a match made in heaven. There’s no better feeling than walking into a store, seeing something gorgeous, taking a closer look and discovering it’s multi-functional. (“It has storage, too! SQUEEE!”) That’s what I love about these vine design garden stools from Outer Banks Trading Group. They are super stylish conversation pieces, come in several colors and make fantastic seating options both indoors and out.

Freebie Fridays

We’re giving away one of these superb ceramic stools this week for Freebie Fridays. The winner gets to choose from any of the fab colors above. (I’m partial to the orange one, but the choice is yours.) To be entered for a chance to win, simply leave us a comment in the field below before 12/11c Monday, September 5.

This week’s question: If you are the winner, where and how would you use this indoor/outdoor garden stool? Front porch or back patio? As a side table in your living room or a stool in your master bedroom?

In our August 26th giveaway, we asked you to go wild dreaming up a list of the ugly (but necessary) everyday items that need cool new covers design by Dirt Couture in order to better fit in our stylish lives. Design Happens fan Olivia would like to see those ghastly white house alarm key pads get a fresh makeover. Fuse boxes, window A/C units and curbside trash cans apparently are also in need of their own “hose clothes.”

Freebie Fridays

Our winner, Alicia Cocco, was too busy gushing over the funky leopard print of the hose clothes to pitch an idea for a product makeover. But that’s quite alright. Freebie Fridays winners are randomly drawn, not based on clever answers.

Our Freebie winners always have two weeks to reply to our messages before we pick another random winner.

If you came to my house right now, you’d see 50′ and 100′ garden hoses strung out all over our front yard and backyard. It drives my husband crazy, but I have no desire to wrangle these unwieldy, slick beasts all the way back to home base when I’m just going to have to pull them out all over again to water the garden the next morning. I’ll admit, though, it looks a little ridiculous to have two giant green mambas strung out in the grass, but I’m not changing my ways. That’s why I was overjoyed when Anna shared with me the chicest garden invention since paisley printed watering cans. I’m talking about Hose Clothes, people.

Water Hose ClothesA sassy leopard print covering for my gangly, green monstrosities? MEOW! We partnered with Dirt Couture (my new favorite online store, btw) to give away one handcrafted and mildew-resistant Leopard garden hose cover. To be entered for a chance to win, simply leave us a comment in the field below before 12/11c Monday, August 29.

This week’s question: What ugly household necessity should Dirt Couture produce covers for next? The boring, black cable TV receiver? Utilitarian washing machines and dryers? How about the metal fuse box?

Monograms, wedding photos, quirky doodles of squirrels and even a USB drive were some of the original ideas Design Happens readers would want if given the opportunity to design their own Vapur Anti-Bottle. In our August 19th giveaway, we introduced you guys to these fold-and-go bottles sporting quirky artwork that our own Antonio Ballatore helped pick out. Now, it’s time to announce the lucky winner of all three Vapur Artist Edition bottles. Drum roll, please…Our sweepstakes winner is Miriam Losada! Congrats, Miriam!

Vapur Water Bottles

Just like all Freebie Friday winners, Miriam has two weeks to respond to our congratulatory email. If she fails to do so, we will pick another random winner to take home the prize.

  • Tell Your Friends

Hi, my name is Karli, and I’m a water-bottle-aholic. If a 12-step program for funky, fresh water bottles existed, my family would rush to sign me up and stage an intervention. My kitchen cabinets are crammed full of water bottles — pink, orange, clear, floral — I’ve got them all. I love having a bottle for every day of the week. (And every outfit!) What I don’t love is how much space they take up. You can imagine how excited I am with my new find…water bottles that take up barely any room. The “fold-and-go” design of Vapur’s Anti-Bottle makes them perfect for purses, backpacks, gym bags and cramped office spaces. When your water is gone, just clip the “bottle” onto your bag or fold it to tuck away.

Water Bottles

Vapur wants one lucky Design Happens winner to take home the Vapur Artist Series collector’s box filled with three limited edition Vapur Anti-Bottles designed by international artists. (HGTV’s own Antonio Ballatore helped pick out the winning designs!) To be entered for a chance to win, simply leave us a comment in the field below before 12/11c Monday, August 22.

This week’s question: What design would you put on your Vapur bottle if you got to play artist? A cool chevron pattern? A photo of your beloved pet or favorite HGTV star? A Louis chair?

Raise your hand if you want to live in a luxurious apartment in Trump International Hotel & Tower with fabulous views of the Chicago skyline, the Magnificent Mile and the Chicago River. Did everyone raise their hands? I certainly did. Well, I’m happy to report that the agonizing wait is officially over. As of today, August 18, you can enter twice daily (once on HGTV.com and once on FrontDoor.com) for your chance to win HGTV Urban Oasis 2011, a grand-prize package valued at more than $750,000. And just in case you didn’t know, the grand-prize package includes stunning interior design by HGTV’s Vern Yip. I’m envious of the future winner already.

Urban-Oasis-2011-Foyer-Living-Room-HGTV-DesignHappens

When I first took the Urban Oasis 2011 virtual tour, I figured it would be a cinch to pick my favorite room since the square footage of this apartment is smaller than, say, HGTV Dream Home or HGTV Green Home. I was completely wrong. Don’t let the size fool you. This one-bedroom and one-and-a-half-bath apartment boasts such a gorgeous detailed interior that it’s impossible to take your eyes off the incredible design work in every room, from the contemporary light fixtures to the powder room’s sleek black-and-white tilework. Check out my two favorite rooms in this top-notch urban apartment and then tell me what you think.

HGTV-Urban-Oasis-2011-Living-Room-Dining-Room-HGTV-DesignHappensLiving Room With a Small Dining Area

In addition to the contemporary decor and interior elements of the living area, I’m head-over-heels for the city views. When you’re at street level in a city like Chicago, the constant traffic, roar of the “L” trains and throngs of pedestrians feel so hectic. But from the 35th floor of the Urban Oasis 2011 apartment, the city will always appear calm, friendly and anything but chaotic. And this stunning view can be seen from almost every room (the foyer, kitchen, dining area, living area and master bedroom). The living room not only serves as a living room but as a miniature home office, dining area and conversational seating/bar area, too. Even though it’s a true multifunctional space, it never once feels cluttered, busy or “too much.” Excellent work, Vern.

Urban-Oasis-2011-Master-Bedroom-HGTV-DesignHappensMaster Bedroom With Guest-Ready Sleeper Sofa

I love the serenity and tranquility present in the master bedroom. A calming color palette and soothing textures serve as an escape from all the hustle and bustle of city life. I think nap time would easily become a daily event if I could snuggle up in that cozy canopy bed. And with all your friends fighting to visit your new digs, within the master bedroom there’s a sleeper sofa that gets an even better look at the skyline than the master bed itself.

Amazing, huh? I shared my favorite aspects of Urban Oasis 2011, so what are yours? Do you love the kitchen appliances? The dining room chairs? The hand-painted walls in the master bedroom?

Tell us in the comments below. (We can’t wait to hear what you have to say.)

But first, go enter the sweepstakes, and remember to do enter every day – once on HGTV.com and once on FrontDoor.com.

Classic American style and the cities that embody it defined our August 12th giveaway. After reading all of the thoughtful (and patriotic) comments, I can’t get Miley Cyrus’s “Party in the USA” out of my head. Y’all are finding plenty of design inspiration in the Northeast (Philly and Boston), the South (Charleston, New Orleans, Savannah and Key West), the Southwest (Santa Fe and Tucson) and in California (Los Angeles, San Francisco and Carmel-by-the-Sea). Apparently, there is inspiring design to be found in Lincoln, Neb.; Barbaboo, Wis. and Wheeling, W.Va. as well. Our winner, Mary, is all about organic, seaside style, so she chose Outer Banks, NC, as her American design muse. Well, Mary, I think your new Somerset Bay painted chest will look marvelous in a house full of seashells and driftwood.

Somerset Bay

Mary, like all of our Freebie Friday winners, has two weeks to reply to our messages. If she doesn’t come through, we’ll move on to another lucky random winner.

Trends come and go, but furniture designs with good bones and quality craftsmanship never go out of style. This week’s Freebie Friday celebrates classic American style with nautical flair. We partnered with luxury furniture company Somerset Bay to bring you a shabby chic chest — perfect for your entryway, bedroom or living room. This purveyor of fine home goods specializes in artful painted furniture — distressed solids in coastal shades like “Key Lime” and “Blueberry Crisp”, as well as hand-painted chinoiserie designs.

Shabby Chic Furniture

One Design Happens reader will take home this magnificent chest to adorn their home. To enter for a chance to win, simply leave us a comment in the field below before 12/11c Monday, August 15.

This week’s question: American style is hard to define — so many influences! What’s your favorite American design mecca? Modern Los Angeles? Historic Boston? Laid-back New Orleans?

In our August 5th giveaway, we wanted to know your go-to tips for giving your rooms a fabulous mini-makeover. Based on the responses, there are serious design masters among our readers! From switching up bold accessories in an otherwise neutral backdrop to bringing in reflective materials for a touch of glam, the comments section from last week’s giveaway is chocked full of inspiration. I suggest you go read them!

Chandeliers

Our three lucky winners this week are Meg, Callie and pixie394041. They’re each taking home a gorgeous chandelier from Crystorama Lighting to jump start their own mini-makeovers. Our winners have two weeks to reply to our messages before we select three more random winners.

  • Tell Your Friends

Nothing brings a room together like a chandelier. The most sleepy of spaces instantly goes from lackluster to luxe with the addition of one of these quintessential light fixtures. The HGTV Design Happens crew wants to give your living room or dining room (heck – any room) a mini-makeover with designer chandeliers from Brooklyn-based lighting company Crystorama. Their classic designs hang from the ceilings of the US Supreme Court building and Constitution Hall.

Chandeliers

Three winners will get to choose a design from the feminine Fiore Collection, modern Solaris Collection or transitional Hampton Collection, pictured above. To enter for a chance to win, just leave us a comment before 12/11c Monday, August 8.

This week’s question: What’s your best tip for giving a room a quick pick-me-up? A vase filled with fresh flowers? An accent wall in an “it” color? A bold piece of art? Or is it all about the lighting?

Our July 29th giveaway was all about the world’s most well-designed flags. While there were many intricate designs mentioned as favorites — like Maryland’s history-heavy coat of arms and Brazil’s colorful, geometry-loving flag — it’s no surprise that the Stars and Stripes of the good ol’ U.S.A took the top spot as most-loved flag design.

Union Jack Pillows

Congrats to our four winners: Marcia, Kyra, Peg and Geri! These ladies are taking home Union Jack pillows from Henry Road to adorn their homes in iconic flag style. All four have replied to our congratulatory messages, but normally we give our winners two weeks to reply before we choose a new random winner.

Do you love a fast-paced life? Do you equate the constant sound of a city to a flowing river? Do you simply consider yourself a city person? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you’ll love this year’s HGTV Urban Oasis apartment in the heart of downtown Chicago. To top it off, HGTV star Vern Yipp designed and decorated the entire flat with jaw-dropping, Arts and Crafts meets mid-century modern flair.

Urban Oasis in the Trump International Hotel and Tower Chicago

HGTV Urban Oasis 2011

Then when you get home after, say, a long day at work, you step into this? It would feel like a dream every single day. I absolutely love the soothing green Vern used for this sophisticated high-rise pad.

Starting August 18 at 9 am ET, you can enter twice per day— once on HGTV.com and once on FrontDoor.com— for a chance to win this beauty. But first, don’t forget to check out what Vern has to say about decorating the Urban Oasis 2011 apartment And tour every room for details on his stellar design.

After clicking through the pictures and taking a guided video tour with our feature blogger Brian Patrick Flynn, I’ve decided the living room (with that spectacular view) is my favorite room. What’s your favorite room in the apartment?

  • Tell Your Friends

In our July 22nd giveaway, we asked you to detail your favorite ways to spend the dog days of summer. Everyone was in agreement—it’s just too dang hot to do more than lay by the pool or in the air conditioning! Our winner, Melissa, hails from one of the hottest, stickiest states in the Union… Louisiana.

Fatboy Hammock

Hopefully, she has a shady spot for her new Headdemock Hammock by Fatboy from Burke Decor. If not, I’m sure this hammock will hit the spot come fall.

Melissa has two weeks to respond to our messages. If we don’t hear from her, we pick another random winner.

  • Tell Your Friends

I’ve spent many a summer day lounging in a handmade hammock my dad brought me from Colombia. While I love the colors and pattern of my hammock, I’m not a fan of having it fold in on me, encasing me in a cocoon and making reading impossible! Somebody out there in design land shared my frustration when they created the Headdemock Hammock by Fatboy. Your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you. That’s a full-grown woman and two kids hanging out (and reading!). Plus, there’s plenty of room to add a husband and a Great Dane.

Fatboy Hammock

While this super-massive, super-sturdy hammock is available through one-stop home decor retailer Burke Decor, we want to make somebody’s summertime so much sweeter by giving one away. All you have to do to be entered for a chance to win is leave us a comment before 12/11c Monday, July 25.

This week’s question: What’s your favorite way to spend the dog days of summer? Napping on a hammock? Working in your summer veggie garden? Running through the sprinklers?
