Liz and I went to High Point Market this weekend to spot the hottest trends in home design. Some trends have made a comeback — like gold furniture — while others, like mid-century modern furniture, are still holding strong. We saw many new ones, including leather furniture, lounge chairs and clever storage solutions, but three trends really stood out.

Bar Carts

It’s all about entertaining these days — especially with summer days ahead. What better and easier way to serve drinks than a bar cart? From extravagant wood carts to retro-style, glass-topped ones, there was a cart to fit every person’s design style and budget.

This was my first venture to High Point Furniture Market and I was truly in design Heaven. (It’s like Disney World for design nerds!) With more than 2,000 exhibitors and tens of thousands of new product introductions to try to see in four days, I was wide-eyed and soaking up as much design as I could with my coffee in hand. My goal for the week was to focus on texture trends from showroom to showroom, and that certainly wasn’t hard to find. As soon as I entered InterHall, the “main” hall at Market, rope started popping up everywhere, and I noticed it most often on light fixtures. Other natural materials like burlap, grasscloth, linen, bamboo, sisal, jute and rattan were also seen, but surprisingly, these materials don’t come off coastal or rustic. Most often, these organic textures were mixed with metals, minerals or metallics for a glamorous, modern look that appears well-matched yet unexpected.

Read on to see other texture trends I spotted around High Point Market, then find out how you can incorporate them into your home.

“Balance is always the key when it comes to design. Luckily, a lot of the natural elements I saw at High Point avoided being too ‘literal’ with their designs. There was a lot of mixing woods with metal, glass and leathers to keep it current. I would suggest the same for your interior; don’t go overboard with the new trend, but mix them in with your current pieces in order to add in the texture and natural elements in your own space.” — Britany Simon, Britany Simon Design, Design Star Season 7 Contestant

“Of course, you can envision a rope chandelier or a driftwood centerpiece in a country cottage or seaside home and they look amazing. But often those products manage to make even the most glamorous space a bit more relaxed, casual and fun. It’s less perfect and more modest which makes the space that much more chic! No one wants matchy-matchy; everyone wants interesting and perhaps a bit eclectic. The contrast, which is easy to achieve by adding humble textures to a luxurious interior, is almost more exciting than using an earthy material in a place where you would expect it.” — Traci Zeller, Traci Zeller Designs, High Point 2012 Style Spotter

Last week, a few of the HGTV.com editors had the privilege of visiting High Point Furniture Market. We saw a lot of fabulous designs, from innovative furniture to one-of-a-kind lighting. I was on the lookout for the hottest colors in interior design. Here are my top four color picks:

Blue

Many designers have transitioned from the bold blues you’re used to seeing to a fresher, ice blue. I still enjoyed seeing unexpected pops of the bright blues in China cabinets and drawers.

Trending Color: BlueMedia Cabinet by Design Legacy; China Cabinet by Steven Shell; Denim Map by Splurge/Robert Nicholas; Tufted Chair by HGTV HOME

Designer Shane Inman’s Decorating Tip: Use soft blues for your walls and darker shades of blue in your upholstery. For something unexpected and daring, use a smokey-slate blue on base moldings and window casings.

Orange

I never thought I could decorate with orange, but seeing this color in accessories, upholstery and seating immediately changed my mind. It completely changes the mood of a room.

Trending Color: OrangeChevron Wall Art by Vanguard Furniture; Dining Chairs by Design Legacy; Teal/Orange Pillows by TOURMALINE home; End Table by Trade Winds Furniture

Designer Erica Islas’ Decorating Tip: If you’re worried about a color overpowering a space, use it as an accent color mixed with neutrals. For example, pair a striped orange-and-white ottoman with a neutral sofa.

We saw a lot of blue this week at High Point Furniture Market (as you’ll soon find out in Farima‘s post-High Point color coverage post). I’ve really been on the bold and ultra-vibrant color wagon for the past few months, but this moody shade of blue is convincing me to tone things down a little bit for fall. Like the Eskayel wallpaper pattern (below) shows, this deep turquoise looks beautiful paired with brick red, mustard yellow and our favorite new neutral, gray. It’s the perfect hue for fall, and its warm tone will even transition us into the winter months with ease.

Happy Monday, everyone! This week, I’m reporting from High Point, N.C. where I’m soaking up all the beautiful furnishings and design trends at High Point Market with the HGTV editorial team. While making our way through the showrooms, we’ve noticed several color, texture, pattern and accessory trends that we can’t wait to share with you later this week. But in the meantime, check out this autumnal-inspired hue that I’ve seen floating around from showroom to showroom in a variety of styles. I first spotted it at Global Views and it became the inspiration behind today’s mood board. The color amber is a mixture of yellow, brown and orange, taking its inspiration from amber stones. It’s so warm and cozy, don’t you think?

Everyone has been asking, “What did you like best from High Point Market?” I’ve been fumbling for an answer to that question since Wednesday. But as of today, I fumble no more! I have spent this Saturday afternoon going through our pictures from last week and have taken stock of what really inspired me. I’m excited to share my top 8 finds, so let’s just jump right in!

1. Look at this sofa!

Worn Leather Sofa

Deep Leather Sofa

Yes, it’s as comfortable as it looks (I tried it out for all of you). This deep leather sofa from Regina Andrew makes you want to see how many people can comfortably sit on it. I would guess at least 10. It is massive, and I want it!

2. Neon Caesar

Caesar Bust

Come on! You know you want a bright yellow bust of Caesar in your living room! No? Well, it may not be for everyone, but I adore this thing from Phillips Collection. I think Augustus would approve, too.

I said “ooh” and “ahh” more times than a crowd at a fireworks show at last week’s High Point Market, but (hard as it was) I’ve managed to narrow the list to my very favorite finds. Here are 7 things to keep an eye out for this season.

Tobi Fairley

Tobi Fairley Home
Interior designer  and blogger Tobi Fairley added job to her business card this week: her own furnishings line, Tobi Fairley Home. The bright colors and preppy patterns so prevalent in her design work are now. We spotted the fabrics, pillows and light fixtures in the Hickory Chair showroom — preview them on her website.

Tempaper

Tempaper
Tempaper‘s removable wallpaper offers all the style of the real thing without the hassle of putting it up and taking it down (and it’s renter-friendly!). Lili wrote about this amazing moveable art back in July, but I fell hard for their perfectly of-the-moment teal-and-gold quatrefoil print.

Oomph Table

Oomph Greenwich Side Table
This occasional table encapsulates several of the season’s hottest trends: it boasts a fun shape, a high-gloss finish, 16 bright color options, and a textured top made of raffia, linen or animal print (your choice). No matter which options you choose, it’s hard not to smile when you see this personality-packed accent.

Regina Andrew Sconce

Golden Driftwood Sconce
This wall lamp from Regina Andrew is the perfect mix of natural and glam.  The gold-hued driftwood would look stunning anywhere from a chic beach house to a contemporary forest-side pad.

Fall’s flying by, and I’ve done a lousy job of leaf peeping. I should be taking walks in Central Park or driving up to the Berkshires, but all of my usual fall frolicking has been curtailed by me catching a nasty cold. I think I have a solution, though. While some of my colleagues are at High Point Market right now, scoping out all the amazing exhibits, I have my favorite finds from the Las Vegas Market I attended in August socked away.
crimson rug

If I owned this Company C crimson landscape rug that I loved in Las Vegas, I wouldn’t even need to step outside my door to peep the foliage at all. It’s like a beautiful painting under your feet, just like all the real fall leaves that have fluttered to the ground.

2011 is here, and it’s time to think of ways to update your decor in the New Year. One of the easiest and most budget-friendly ways to make your home feel brand new is to decorate with color. Painting walls and bringing in colorful textiles and accessories can transform any space. While honeysuckle is the Pantone Color of the Year for 2011, hues like turquoise, lime green and chartreuse are still in.
