It’s Derby Week, and the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs is only five days away. Horse racing has been around for hundreds of years, but these days the sport proves to be just as much about food and fashion as it is about spectating and placing bets. I mean, you just can’t show up to the tracks without an oversize hat, spring dress and a classic mint julep in hand. Today, we have plenty of inspiration to make sure you show up to the Derby, The Belmont Stakes or the Preakness looking like you walked out of a Southern novel.

The Kentucky Derby is just days away, and this year it falls on Cinco de Mayo. I had the chance to go to the Derby on Cinco de Mayo five years ago, and it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. My favorite part was seeing a mix of the traditional hats with festive sombreros. This lamp by Folly does a good job of mixing traditional with whimsical, with its colorful miniature jockeys. Now all I need is a mint julep and a winning ticket!

Making an appearance at the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs is definitely on my bucket list. In the past, I’ve been intrigued by the chic sundresses and extravagant hats that are standard Derby attire, more than the famous horses and jockeys. But after I was assigned this post, I started coming across so many intriguing designs featuring horses, equestrian gear and horseshoes that I have officially switched my focus. These stunning creatures can definitely turn a pretty room into a heart-stopping space, like in this dining room.

Whether you’re a horse-racing aficionado, ride and care for horses as a hobby or simply enjoy their tranquil appearance and demeanor from a distance, these designer spaces are sure to spark a new love interest in the gentle beasts. Feel free to sip on a Derby-worthy mint julep as you browse my favorite pics. (By the way, my money’s on Midnight Interlude.)

In honor of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on Saturday, we selected this unusual punch ladle for this week’s “What the…?”

punch ladle
This silver punch ladle in the form of a riding crop and cap that’s for sale at 1stdibs dates back to the late 19th century when fox hunting was at its peak of popularity in Europe. I think it would make the most amazing hostess gift at a Derby party. Perfect for ladling mint juleps from a community bowl.
