I was that girl with the Barbie™ mansion, pizza shop, post office, supermarket, boutique, classroom — I mean, should I really continue? I was the mayor of Barbieville™. So, when I found out that party stylist and HGTV contributor Kim Stoegbauer of The TomKat Studio partnered with Barbie™ in celebration of the iconic doll’s upcoming birthday, I immediately took a turn down Memory Lane.

To kick off Barbie’s™ month-long birthday celebration (starting March 9!), Kim styled this glamorous girls’ birthday party. Read on for Kim’s ideas and party inspiration.

When I was first introduced to Melody’s work, I was immediately smitten. Melody Brandon is an incredibly talented pastry chef and the co-owner of Sweet and Saucy Shop in Long Beach, California. Her cake designs and dessert displays are beyond perfection. I had the opportunity to interview Melody about how she got started, a few of her favorite events and what the future holds for her growing business. Read on to get to know Melody a little bit more and get inspired by some of her decadent desserts!

1. You are a such an inspiration to so many, not only as an incredible cake and dessert designer, but as a savvy business woman. When did you know that this is what you wanted to do for your career? Tell us a little of your background and how Sweet & Saucy Shop came about.
Well to be honest I actually always thought I would be an elementary school teacher and that is what I went to school for and almost finished my degree in.  I was assistant teaching in various classes when I found that teaching just didn’t have enough creative freedom for me and I didn’t like all the rules and regulations you had to follow.  I stopped teaching at the particular school I was at for a little break and in the meantime had just gotten married and loved throwing parties for friends and family and for quite some time had been obsessed with Food Network & cookbooks; although I had never really thought of it as a career option.

Happy Thanksgiving week! I’m sharing my inspirations for Entertaining with HGTV’s Color of the Month today. November’s color choice is marigold. Not one you normally would think of for parties and events, but with these ideas you may rethink that notion. Marigold is perfect for autumn, with its rich yellow-orange tone. Our Sunflower Thanksgiving feature is a perfect example of incorporating this color for fall gatherings. I’ve compiled products and ideas to get you in the mood to celebrate with marigold.

Marigold isn’t difficult to find for home furnishings and servingware. Plates, serving dishes, paper products and even furniture can be used at your next gathering featuring this color.

Food options are easy to find in this rich hue. The Food Network is featuring marigold this month as well. Check out their recipe selections. I came up with a few edible ideas of my own after browsing the Food Network recipe database. Doesn’t this mac & cheese look divine?

What to wear? If you read my posts, you know that I am a fan of the hostess dressing to coordinate with the party. Whether it’s a dress or accessory, here are a few ideas to add a pop of marigold.

Thanksgiving is right around the corner. Are you hosting dinner this year? We are! My husband is in charge of the turkey, I’m in charge of desserts (as always) and our family members are bringing the rest. In our feature, Sunflower Thanksgiving Dessert Buffet, I shared several ideas for delicious desserts. I’m definitely going beyond pumpkin pie this year and serving up a variety of mini sweets.

Cake pops are such a popular trend at parties and gatherings these days. Order or make them in flavors and colors that coordinate with your Thanksgiving decor. These mini pumpkin mousse parfaits were so delicious and really easy to make. I simply adapted the recipe for the mini parfait glasses.

Cupcakes are an unexpected dessert for Thanksgiving, but your littlest guests will love them. Dress them up with fondant sunflowers or paper cupcake toppers and display on a decorative cake stand. Pumpkin Spice Whoopie Pies are easy to make and the cream cheese marshmallow filling is divine. Display them in mini dishes for the perfect serving size.

I designed a full printable collection for you to use for your Thanksgiving festivities!

The moment I joined Pinterest, I was hooked. If you haven’t already heard, Pinterest allows you to “pin” online photos to virtual pinboards. You can share your boards with others, comment on pins and repin friends’ pins. Founded by three innovative guys in Palo Alto, California, Pinterest has quickly become a useful tool for those in the creative world. I constantly pin fabulous party ideas, decorating inspiration, gorgeous cakes and cupcakes. That’s why I was thrilled when Pinterest co-founder Ben Silbermann agreed to do an interview with me for HGTV.com.

{1} For the person how has never visited Pinterest.com, how would you describe it?

Pinterest is an online pinboard that helps you collect and explore what inspires you.

{2} What inspired your idea to start Pinterest?

As a kid, I loved collecting. I collected everything from insects to stamps to books. I’ve always thought that the things you collect — whether it’s the furniture in your home or the music on your iPod — says a lot about who you are. I thought it would be great to bring that entire experience online and help connect people who have common interests.

{3} What is the very first photo you personally pinned?

It’s a paper cut that I found on Etsy. When Pinterest turned one, my Mom bought me a copy of that papercut to hang in my apartment!

{4} Inspirational art prints with quotes are pinned on a regular basis. Do you have a favorite that you have pinned?

There is a poster by one of the designers at Facebook that says “Done is Better than Perfect”. We have a copy hanging in our office as a reminder of how important it is to push things forward all the time. Our little team is obsessed with making Pinterest into a service that makes people’s lives more inspiring and fun. That means that we can’t be afraid to try new things and learn from our mistakes.

{5} When you created it, you had this vision for how Pinterest would be used. What are the most unexpected ways people are using Pinterest that you never imagined?
