I didn’t have a treehouse when I was growing up, but I noticed one in the backyard of some of my neighbors that never seemed to be used. The couple built it for their son who had long since gone off to college, leaving the fort abandoned. They kindly told me I could play there whenever I wanted, and I didn’t have to be told twice. Seeing this piece in The New York Times‘ Home & Garden section about the treehouse Alexandra Meyn built behind her Brooklyn apartment brought me right back to those days.

This structure is architecturally more sophisticated than the fort we played in (French doors!), but still has an air of youthful whimsy about it with the eclectic furnishings. And though it’s in an urban space, the worn wood and mulberry tree foliage lend it a natural rusticity. Meyn and I are neighbors of a sort, since we live in parts of Brooklyn that border each other. I wonder if she’d work out the same visitation arrangement with me that my old neighbors did. It’s worth a try, right?

Call it kismet, serendipity or mere coincidence that I spotted this gorgeous hilltop cabin in Nova Scotia on the New York Times yesterday. I’ve been semi-planning a road trip (it’s adventurous having no plan!) for my upcoming vacation and just last week decided Maine’s Canadian island neighbor would be the goal. But what’s to see in Nova Scotia?

Hopefully if the aesthetic of rest of the island is anything like this cabin, there will be plenty of good design to take in. The weather-worn shingles are right at home on the windswept coast.  The owners, cognizant of the intense light bouncing off the sea, chose a white stain for their wood floors and a palette of muted pastels all of which combine with an enchanting effect in the wide open spaces. Check out the full-sized images on The Times, they’re worth the look. Just don’t blame me if you suddenly want to come to Nova Scotia, too.

In her small studio apartment, Malena Georgieva created the feeling of a separate bedroom by framing her bed with three orchid prints.

It’s a great solution for such a small home, but it would be equally good for a shared bedroom. A room that does double duty, like a home office that also serves as a guest room, could benefit from this clever “partitioning” as well. Nicely done, Malena.

The serenity captured in the design of this bedroom in a villa in Phuket, Thailand featured in The New York Times this week is blissful.

Using this much wood in a bedroom — the floors, the ceiling and the molding — could make for a gloomy space. However, having it all balanced by the white, white walls and open, uncluttered space removes any potential imposing darkness. The pop of pink on the bedside tables add just the right amount of color.
