I believe home organizers have a seasonal cycle.

At the beginning of the year, online organization tips spike and a couple of months later, it’s spring cleaning season. So it makes sense that now, our audience loves finding new ways to use old things…as in stuff they couldn’t bear to toss.

Whether it’s for an environmental or a sentimental conviction, upcycling is a creative way to justify keeping old stuff.

In a few months, we’ll be organizing closets again for fall. This will likely be followed by a thorough cleaning in preparation for the holidays. Then, perhaps the unused items can be upcycled into Christmas gifts.

Just know, if you don’t use it or toss it, this stuff will keep cycling through the seasons.

With all of the stuff that comes with the holidays, it’s no wonder that storage and organization topics are trending on HGTV.com.

This year, I’ve vowed to upgrade my Christmas decorations storage. This list of 12 Holiday Organizing Essentials has been extremely helpful and inspiring.

This is also a great time to clean out and organize your pantry.

With two kids, making space for new toys is always a challenge for me. This Christmas, our son added to his vast collection of Legos. If you’ve ever stepped on a tiny toy, you know the importance of having plenty of buckets, baskets and bins.

Today we celebrate our nation’s independence (I hope everyone has a relaxing, fun-filled day planned).

To keep with the day’s patriotic theme, I highlight Bungalow’s stylish collapsible white and blue storage bins. Yes, the “red” may be missing, but still — they have that “4th” feel to them.

A lot of these types of bins are on the market, but Bungalow promises theirs are different in that they are “sturdy enough to last.”

I like that tag line. It’s the same sentiment I have for our country. Happy 4th of July, everyone.

Daily Delight: Storage Tower

Fun fact: Did you know it’s nearly impossible to find a non-ugly filing cabinet? I’m something of a paper hoarder, and I thought a cabinet would be the best option for me, but according to my many Internet searches, most of them look like they’re straight from the set of Office Space. All hope was lost, until I discovered the 5-Bin Storage Tower.

The Italian design is clean and mod, the height is a great use of space and each of the bins swivels out for easy access to whatever you tuck away inside. (The product description on The Container Store’s site also mentions shoes, books and craft accessories as possible bin fodder.) Plus, it comes in three different colors. I’m so filing my paper in the tower, and I’m so filing the tower under A for “Awesome Organization Find.”

Design for Mankind: The Great Garage Cleanout of 2011

OK, friends, I’m going to get real with you today. Because the fact of the matter is that during a renovation, your home becomes a war zone. And because my dear husband and I can’t handle living among shambles, we’ve designated one area to unload all miscellaneous tools, paraphernalia, and… well, junk. That area, friends, is our garage. Exhibit A:

The dreaded before.

Oh dear. I cannot believe I just shared that image with you. All of you. Goodness gracious. Please be kind to me, Internet. Because for the past year, we’ve treated our garage like a landfill. I’m just as horrified as you are. Trust me.

And although I dream of a glistening, organized garage someday, I know that, realistically, we’ve still got a long way to go before that day arrives. After all, we still have a full sunroom and basement renovation ahead of us, and I’m quite sure our garage will become the holding zone for drywall, beams and plywood.

Yep, still embarrassed.

Still, there is no excuse to live in such utter chaos. So a few days ago, Ken and I tackled a serious clean-out extravaganza. I won’t tell you everything we unearthed, but I will say the list included an abandoned art project, half-used bottles of hand sanitizer and much, much more.

Luckily, we also stumbled upon the previous homeowners’ kitchen cabinets that we knew we’d saved for a reason. With zero investment and a few nails, Ken and I now have a fully functioning closed storage solution for paint, tools and renovation supplies. Wanna see it?

Daily Delight: Horizontal Shoe Rack

I have a problem, a shoe problem. Fortunately my hang-up is wallet-friendly and doesn’t have anything to do with being unable to resist splurging on a fancy pair of heels.

No, my problem is far more banal and occasionally hazardous: the entire family, myself included, kicks off their shoes at some point between walking in the door and sitting down. But if we had a shoe rack as ingenious as this one by j-me design, maybe we would all be tempted to put our shoes away. This space-saving, wall-mounted horizontal rack can accommodate all types of shoes and stores them with a dash of modern style and gravity defiance.

This week’s “What the…?” is a space-age looking version of the 20th-century ”junk drawer.” HGTV_Kelly’s guess nailed it in thorough detail, but we’re giving credit to Megan as this week’s winner for getting that they’re for hanging coats and hats first. (Sorry, boss).

Designer David Cathro’s Blomp Coathanger is a great find if you’re like me and always misplacing your keys and other miscellaneous objects. And there’s a bonus. When you’re done stuffing the Blomp, simply drape your coat over it to hide all evidence of clutter.
