The countdown to Thanksgiving has officially begun! I’m still doing some last-minute menu planning (brussels sprouts with bacon or green beans with lemon and garlic?), but I think everything’s settled on the table and decor front. Or, I thought it was until I came across this French Paper Wreath featuring a Thanksgiving turkey.

Drat! This would have been perfect to hang in the dining room where we’ll be feasting. Seasonal, but not too predictable. Traditional, but not too stuffy. And book lovers need not worry. The seller says the pages only come from old books with broken spines. Oh well. I’ll have to order it for next year, and give thanks for Pinterest and Etsy in the meantime.

In celebration of Halloween I wanted to create a color crush board that goes with this holiday’s most dominant shade – black. Scary, spooky, the color of midnight, black can definitely be intimidating. However, in the world of decor, it can also be the hue that brings some bold, sexy, and glamorous style home. While some of you may be dressing your homes in black today to scare a few kiddies, here are some black rooms that show you can live with this color all year long.

Black on black can be so beautiful. Birds on Branches Wallpaper by Ferm Living gives a room some layers, and depth, and all in a striking shade.

Black and mint may be my new favorite color combination. The pastel shade pops against the black walls and carpet. And with a little bit of white mixed in, this room feels open and airy even while enveloped in a dark shade.

Black is the perfect backdrop for jewel tones. Emerald green, teal, yellow, purple, all come to life when set against a black background.

I love how this office space uses unconventional materials — tiles! — to give the black wall some texture. The mix of shades among the tiles lightens up the room. And when black is paired with gold, the effect is warm and beautiful.

You can explore more black rooms over on my HGTV Color Crush: Shades of Black Pinterest board and my previous post Black Is Beautiful. And if you pin, be sure to share with me some of your favorite black rooms. Have an amazing Halloween!

The moment I joined Pinterest, I was hooked. If you haven’t already heard, Pinterest allows you to “pin” online photos to virtual pinboards. You can share your boards with others, comment on pins and repin friends’ pins. Founded by three innovative guys in Palo Alto, California, Pinterest has quickly become a useful tool for those in the creative world. I constantly pin fabulous party ideas, decorating inspiration, gorgeous cakes and cupcakes. That’s why I was thrilled when Pinterest co-founder Ben Silbermann agreed to do an interview with me for HGTV.com.

{1} For the person how has never visited Pinterest.com, how would you describe it?

Pinterest is an online pinboard that helps you collect and explore what inspires you.

{2} What inspired your idea to start Pinterest?

As a kid, I loved collecting. I collected everything from insects to stamps to books. I’ve always thought that the things you collect — whether it’s the furniture in your home or the music on your iPod — says a lot about who you are. I thought it would be great to bring that entire experience online and help connect people who have common interests.

{3} What is the very first photo you personally pinned?

It’s a paper cut that I found on Etsy. When Pinterest turned one, my Mom bought me a copy of that papercut to hang in my apartment!

{4} Inspirational art prints with quotes are pinned on a regular basis. Do you have a favorite that you have pinned?

There is a poster by one of the designers at Facebook that says “Done is Better than Perfect”. We have a copy hanging in our office as a reminder of how important it is to push things forward all the time. Our little team is obsessed with making Pinterest into a service that makes people’s lives more inspiring and fun. That means that we can’t be afraid to try new things and learn from our mistakes.

{5} When you created it, you had this vision for how Pinterest would be used. What are the most unexpected ways people are using Pinterest that you never imagined?

Developing a color palette is one of my favorite things to do. Whether I’m designing a new pillow or wall treatment for AphroChic, one of the first things I like to start with is color. As you can probably tell from my posts, I’m all about bright palettes and bold shades, and I love to explore the color spectrum by creating a mood board or something visual to get inspired. I have a few favorite tools for finding just the right shade. I personally can’t live without the Pantone app on my iPhone, and my other favorite tool is Pinterest, a cool site where you can take some of your favorite images from the web and put them into a visual scrapbook or “board.” I decided to create one for my current color crush — purple.

Regal, warm, and a beautiful accent color, my Pinterest board explores all my favorite purple shades from grape to a warm gray-purple mix.

I’ve found that curating a favorite shade in a visual inspiration board leads to unexpected discoveries. You never know what will pop out at you. Like that a purple sofa can look amazing when paired with bits of brown and cream…

…and that modern wood furniture pieces can ground shades like dark purple, blue and pink.
