Mother’s Day is almost here, and we’ve been scheming up gift ideas here at HGTV.com for months now. One of my favorites? This drop-dead gorgeous lilac bouquet.  The lilacs and French lavender pair perfectly with the bright-green lady’s mantle, and the vintage pitcher makes it sweet and classic. (Like my mom!) But don’t confine apple green and lavender to a vase: the combination looks just as fresh in this little girl’s room designed by Jennifer Duneier.

Seeing groups of yellow and purple flowers always cheers me up in late winter; the blooms are like spring’s first official order of business. Inside the house, this combo of color wheel opposites is less common since it can be tricky to balance the two bold hues.

To get it right, take a cue from some of spring’s first blossoms. The colors of daffodils and crocuses look fabulous against the backdrop of the neutral, still-thawing ground. It’s the same in your living room: accents of deep purple and mustard yellow add color and vibrancy to a warm gray base hue (without making the room into a Lakers shrine.)

I may be getting a little ahead of the game (or maybe not), but I’m in complete holiday mode. Here at HGTV.com, we’ve been working on holiday content all summer, so I’m ready to actually celebrate Christmas during the season. You’ll notice when you peek through this year’s holiday galleries and projects that we’ve mixed in some new, non-traditional palettes. Icy purple is one of my favorite modern holiday hues. It brings color to chilly, wintry surroundings.

Last week, a few of the HGTV.com editors had the privilege of visiting High Point Furniture Market. We saw a lot of fabulous designs, from innovative furniture to one-of-a-kind lighting. I was on the lookout for the hottest colors in interior design. Here are my top four color picks:

Blue

Many designers have transitioned from the bold blues you’re used to seeing to a fresher, ice blue. I still enjoyed seeing unexpected pops of the bright blues in China cabinets and drawers.

Trending Color: BlueMedia Cabinet by Design Legacy; China Cabinet by Steven Shell; Denim Map by Splurge/Robert Nicholas; Tufted Chair by HGTV HOME

Designer Shane Inman’s Decorating Tip: Use soft blues for your walls and darker shades of blue in your upholstery. For something unexpected and daring, use a smokey-slate blue on base moldings and window casings.

Orange

I never thought I could decorate with orange, but seeing this color in accessories, upholstery and seating immediately changed my mind. It completely changes the mood of a room.

Trending Color: OrangeChevron Wall Art by Vanguard Furniture; Dining Chairs by Design Legacy; Teal/Orange Pillows by TOURMALINE home; End Table by Trade Winds Furniture

Designer Erica Islas’ Decorating Tip: If you’re worried about a color overpowering a space, use it as an accent color mixed with neutrals. For example, pair a striped orange-and-white ottoman with a neutral sofa.

I think all of the console tables would look great in this entryway, but you chose correctly if your answer was A. Designer Brian Patrick Flynn broke up the similar hues (fuchsia and plum) with the black console table.

Saturday was the first day of fall, and I spent every waking moment outside enjoying the cool, crisp air that comes with the season. Many are sad to see summer go, but I like to think that with every changing season comes a brand-new color palette to savor. I decided to give you all a taste of fall with one of my all-time favorite hues: plum. It’s rich, warm and luxurious in so many ways.

There’s something about this refreshing, summery shade of purple that makes me feel kind of guilty for rushing the season along and hoping for an early fall. Hey, it’s been HOT here, people. I’m dying for some below-90 days, even if that means giving up my warm-weather wardrobe that I love so much. But then I remembered dear ole’ Rhapsody in Pantone’s Fall 2012 Fashion Color Report. Keep your pastels out, because they’re not going anywhere. (Yay!)

Pastels are going to be huge this fall, especially when layered with richer colors and neutrals, like charcoal gray. What’s your take on lilac? Tell us below!

You know those super by-the-book, overly nice types who preach things like “you shouldn’t use the word hate, it’s a very strong word, and it’s not very nice”? I really hate those people. Just kidding! In fact, I’m kinda-sorta one of those un-hateful types; I just have a pleasantly snarky side which I like to believe gives me an edge. But as a designer, there are some things I have been open about hating, specifically the colors purple and yellow.

Well, my former distaste for the dynamic duo has taken a 180—for the most part. I’m now officially a huge lover of purple, specifically violet, plum and lavender. Yellow is still gonna take some time to win me over, but I’m really trying to work through it. What I recently discovered about purple is that it’s uber-difficult to work with. Sometimes it’s too Austin Powers. It can often be so lilac-y that it screams “baby girl”; most of its hues seem childish or tween-ish. Frankly, there are not many combinations that make purple seem sophisticated. But when used correctly, the purply result can be uh-may-zing.

Last week, I was asked to design a modern living room vignette for the opening of the Italia Furniture showroom in Atlanta. Determined to use something others would most likely have no interest in, my natural choice was to unleash the “One-Eyed, One-Horned Flying Purple People Eater” inside me to see if he would be kinda debonaire or just flat-out monstrous. The result? Hmmm, I think it went okay. In fact, I had the vignette photographed to share with y’all some of the purple-tastic finds that are internet-errific. As far as yellow is concerned, I’m gonna give that canary tone a whirl later this week when I knock out a little girl’s room in Fort Lauderdale, then fill you in somewhere, somehow here on HGTV.com. Fingers crossed!

Italia
In small doses, purple works magically. It’s gender neutral and can take on a more modern appearance, albeit formal or casual, depending on textures and sheen. Here in the Italia showroom, I set it all against uber-neutral backdrops including dove grey walls, a white Natuzzi sectional, black club chair and glass/dark wood coffee table.
Purple Print Pillow

In January, I was introduced to the magical, hand-made world of seamstress/blogger/writer/supermom Susan Peterson of Freshly Picked. Her violet wool throw pillows were the stars of the space and can be purchased through her website. She also lives in Utah which is always super cool. For real, aside from Utahns, how many people do you know from Utah, really? PS – it may now be my very favorite state, not just because of Susan and her pillows but also because every single place you look is inspiring—kinda magic mixed with the taste of Pinkberry.
