Almost everything has a shelf life.

Trends expire and seasons change so it’s no wonder that right now, online readers are looking for ways to freshen up their shelves. Arranging collectibles and displaying books is tricky so our audience has been consuming tips for decorating shelves and bookcases.

Expert designer Tyler Wisler says, “I believe that when you are displaying your favorite items you need to think in clusters, or small moments. You can either group by color, by size or by specifically what the items are. I have on my living room shelves a stack of small wooden boxes, near a large vintage trunk because they are within the same genre of accessories, if you will.”

“On another shelf, I let a gorgeous ram skull rest up against a piece of found driftwood and kept the surrounding areas open to give it more importance,” says Tyler.

If you have more stuff to display than you have space, consider making your own shelves. I was inspired by Tyler’s look and found this DIY industrial-rustic bookshelf project by Dan Faires.

If you’re adding shelf life to your home, decorate with the mantra—quality over quantity.

Tyler says, “Often the use of negative space on a shelf is just as powerful as the impact of filled space. An important tool when arranging is your editing eye, sometimes less is more!”

Remember how I said I was obsessed with finding ways to maximize space because I live in a small apartment (and also because I get the same thrill out of it that I get when I am shopping in a thrift store and find something amazing)? I have a feeling the Rolly Shelf by Matt Carr on Umbra is about to be my new best friend.

What a pretty little baby! The walnut unit has “multiple stacking configurations,” so you don’t have to put it together exactly as shown, and can customize it to best fit your space. I also love that it would play very well with the Danish modern furniture that I already own. This is one baby you SHOULD put in a corner!

(Totally wrote this whole piece just so I could work in that last line. Could you tell?)

We’ve been trying to make some improvements to the apartment lately, but one of the biggest challenges is space. Rearranging a small apartment is like a really annoying game of Tetris. You can move the pieces around, but they still all have to fit together tightly in the end. Anyway, I’m realizing that our home bar is a bit big for our living room, and while I’m attached to it, if I was shopping for one today, I’d probably go with a wall-mounted option instead, like this Brooklyn TV Quilt with Bar from Think Fabricate.

The small shelves all piece together to form one attractive unit (hence, the quilt reference). I love that it has the open element, so you can still display pretty bottles and decanters, without taking up half of your available floor space to do it. Now that’s something all of us apartment renters and small-space dwellers can raise a glass to!

As soon as I saw this plumbing pipe wall unit on one of the photo inspiration sites I use, I thought it looked familiar. When I headed to The Brick House blog to check out the DIY instructions, it clicked.

Turns out, it was modeled after a similar unit in one of my very favorite places to stay, The Ace Hotel in Palm Springs, where the industrial look of the shelves plays well against the groovy 70s California vibe they cultivate. Not only is this mod unit fetching and creative, it’s a pretty good deal considering it only cost about $200 for all the supplies! (If you like the look, but don’t have the ft² to pull this off, try this smaller DanMade bookshelf.) I think it’s high time to take a trip to Home Depot…

A beautiful facet of open floor plans is the light that gets to pass freely from one space to the next.

But an open plan can cause some logistical problems, namely where to put all your stuff. This kitchen shelving by Berg Design Architecture solves that problem in an elegant fashion. The pass-through shelves allow unobstructed light from the wall-sized windows to filter through to the kitchen. Just make sure your dishes are in tip-top shape for this kind of storage.

Don’t get rid of the books you’re not going to read again. Turn them into art.

This is just one of the inspiring bookshelves at the salaciously named Bookshelf Porn. Head on over to their site for a dazzling array of books. It’s a bibliophile’s dream.

The last time I posted a blog entry I imagined the perfect cozy reading nook – very easy to do. The hard part is sorting through the books you’ve got and storing them. Personally, I find the bargain section at the bookstore irresistible and I accumulate huge piles like snowflakes in winter. So I’ve developed a system. Every six months or so, I go through my shelves and ask three key questions. 1. Did I love this book? 2. Will I read it again? 3. If I have yet to read this book, will I ever? If I answer “no” to any of these, the book goes to charity.
