Watermelon Salad with Quick Pickled Jalapeno

Whether you’re lugging home a 15-pounder to slice into wedges or grabbing a pre-cut version, my guess is that your watermelon will generally be served plain. May I recommend you add some intrigue to your melon by pairing its sweet succulent flesh with the fruity spice of jalapeno and acidic tang of lime? The Latin-inspired combination transforms plain ol’ watermelon into a complex dish with loads of sweet and spicy flavor. These 3 recipes are all paired with fresh jalapeno and lime to provide a few more interesting ways to enjoy summer’s unofficial fruit.

Norm’s Notes: Pick a Pepper

I don’t know if it’s because of drought or my selection habits, but most of the chiles (especially jalapeno) I’ve had this year are really, really spicy. Although I generally like spice, sometimes there is such a thing as too hot. If you are in the same boat and want to keep the heat of chiles to a minimum, remove the seeds and inner white membrane with a sharp knife. Doing this will not only reduce the heat level, but will help bring out more of the chiles’ fruity flavor. Also, thinly slicing or finely dicing the peppers helps to evenly distribute the spiciness in a dish, allowing for a more predictable heat level and giving a peppery pop of flavor to each bite.

watermelon tote bag

I am so ready for summer I can smell the suntan lotion, feel the sand between my toes, and hear the waves crashing now (or is that my sound machine that helps me sleep?). I’ve been seeing watermelon everywhere right now in fashion and home decor and it’s beckoning a long, chill summer season perfect for BBQ’s and pool days. This trend is in tandem with the pineapple moment that is happening right now, and the combo is oh-so-refreshing! Let’s see what else bloggers and YouTubers are creating with citrus across the ole’ inter-web. Madame Citron hand-dyed this tote bag to be watermelon fresh and it’s adorable.

Remember a few weeks ago when a good part of the D-Happ staff was obsessed with all things watermelon? Kayla made the juicy fruit the topic of her Mood Board Monday. Allie showed us five ways to craft with watermelon. And I even pitched in with a watermelon-inspired Tuesday Huesday. So when Nina,’s entertainment manager, introduced a watermelon-themed Pinterest board to the Color Team, it wasn’t exactly a hard sell. That’s right: Bright, juicy watermelon is our newest Color of the Month!

Clearly, great minds think alike here at Design Happens! Last week, Allie showed us five crafty and delectable ways to use watermelon, and this week, I’m in a sea of watermelon myself. Fourth of July weekend (although rainy over here) was a beautiful summer salute. For many summer is just starting, so let’s keep the seasonal fruits, hues and landscapes coming.

Yes, you read the title to this post correctly: grilled watermelon. We all know how delicious vegetables turn out on the grill, but have you tried char-grilled fruit? Nothing says summer like a juicy slice of watermelon, and this recipe by Organic Authority adds a savory twist to its classic sweet taste.

It seems strange, but a Thai-inspired sauce makes these slices a tasty and healthy accompaniment to your burgers, chicken or seafood. Give this easy recipe a try, and let us know how it turned out in the comments below.

My childhood summers consisted of running around with baskets to help my grandfather pick fresh fruits and veggies from the garden. Of course, the watermelons were too heavy for my 5-year-old arms, but that didn’t stop me from sitting by the pool and cradling my one-and-a-half-foot long, freshly-cut watermelon in my lap with the sweet and sticky juices dripping down my face. (I still live by the motto — the messier, the better — when consuming watermelon.) A true staple of summer, watermelon isn’t just an incredibly tasty fruit; it also represents a peachy, melon-pink hue that can instantly brighten any space. Just look at Pantone’s Color of the Year, honeysuckle. Both watermelon and honeysuckle are representing the middle pinks that aren’t quite fuchsia but aren’t tea rose either, and we love ‘em for it.

I fell in love with this stunning wallpaper pattern before I even realized it was so appropriately named Skater Watermelon. The intertwining shapes create a mesmerizing design that would be perfect for an accent wall. And like this eclectic and colorful living space proves this pattern can be coordinated with just about any color scheme: teal, green, white, yellow, red and turquoise.

If you think a watermelon hue can only thrive in the spring and summer, you’re so wrong. It’s actually the perfect color addition for winterized navy-blue walls. White draperies would look gorgeous, but that fruity-pink shade is just the smile-inducing burst of color this room needs. And did you see the rainbow-style, chevron-patterned carpet? That might be my favorite part of all.

Of course I couldn’t leave out the quirky, crafty and artistic representations of this inspirational fruit. Can you imagine how much fun it would be (for once) to wait for public transport in a watermelon room (top, left)? I love the fresh look given to a row of rundown homes by turning the entire left side of the building into a giant, juicy watermelon.

What’s your take on watermelon pink? Do you love it? Hate it? Could smother a room in it from floor to ceiling? Any favorites from this post?

We thank them for giving us a good fright in the first true summer blockbuster, Jaws, Shark Week and one of the coolest diving with sharks Youtube videos. But that isn’t the only reason to show sharks some love. Their streamlined bodies and striking jawlines have inspired some pretty rad home decor and entertaining ideas.

So many clever, biting finds. Who wouldn’t want to dive into a shark-shaped watermelon at a backyard pool party. Briana found that dapper Great White Shark print on Etsy and posted it with her Daily Delight: Hammerhead Shark Wallpaper. My favorite design is the black and white great white pillow I found on Etsy. It reminds me of everyday beach decor (like the trendy starfish) with a slightly menacing twist. And who needs guard dogs when you can have fearsome fencepost sharks?

Do you like sharks or do you fear them too much to incorporate them in your home decor?

You’ve heard of soap on a rope, but how about soap on a stick? A Popsicle stick, that is. In honor of National Watermelon Day, allow me to present the Watermelon Soapsicle, a cute nod to the sweetest fruit of the season.

Can’t you just imagine these pretty little pops by AubreyEApothecary as part of summer party tablescape or favor bag? Or tucked in a guest bathroom in a beach house? They’re so much fun, they may even inspire kids to actually wash their hands (gasp!) before meals.
