We’re counting down to Christmas with a new holiday party tip, decorating idea or DIY project every day until December 25. Miss a day? See all the posts here.

Another day, another inspiring Christmas project! Today is all about door decor. Your home’s front door is one of the first thing guests see, so it’s a great place to focus your decorating efforts. But you don’t have to spend a lot of time (or money) to make a statement; for most projects, you just need a wreath form, some hot glue and a good idea. (Speaking of hot glue…check out Marianne’s easy pom-pom wreath how-to.)

Holiday Wreath Ideas

Take your wreath in a traditional direction by adding moss and cranberries, or go crazy and affix your favorite holiday foods, like jelly beans, peppermints or even pistachios. And don’t feel like you have to go circular, either: a square picture frame or a cardboard monogram can look equally chic. How are you dressing up your door this year?

Only 12 more days ’till Christmas! We’re counting down with an easy handmade project every day until Christmas Eve. (Yes, you still have time to make them all.) First up: This old-fashioned moss-and-cranberry wreath.

Moss-and-Cranberry Wreath

This wreath reminds me of Christmas Eve as a kid. While the adults at our family party imbibed copious amounts of eggnog, I was content to string garland after garland of cranberries and popcorn to drape on the tree. The popcorn I didn’t eat, that is.

10 Festive Christmas Wreaths

The kids will love to help string the berries for this simple wreath that celebrates the natural hues of the season. Best of all: it can double as a centerpiece on your holiday table. Get the full how-to here >>

The countdown to Thanksgiving has officially begun! I’m still doing some last-minute menu planning (brussels sprouts with bacon or green beans with lemon and garlic?), but I think everything’s settled on the table and decor front. Or, I thought it was until I came across this French Paper Wreath featuring a Thanksgiving turkey.

Drat! This would have been perfect to hang in the dining room where we’ll be feasting. Seasonal, but not too predictable. Traditional, but not too stuffy. And book lovers need not worry. The seller says the pages only come from old books with broken spines. Oh well. I’ll have to order it for next year, and give thanks for Pinterest and Etsy in the meantime.

Easter Sunday brings back so many … itchy memories for me. I never threw a tantrum while getting dressed. I kept it together because I knew if I cooperated and wore the fluffy floral dress, uncomfortable patent leather shoes, white gloves, straw hat and smiled through the family photo shoot that I’d be rewarded with all the Marshmallow Peeps and Reese’s Peanut Butter Eggs I could eat. While I still love eating Easter Sunday brunch at my grandmother’s, I’m so happy that I get to pick out a soft sundress of my choosing. And decorate my home to my heart’s delight. I’m getting an early start on Easter decorating this year (a good 3 weeks early!) How about you? Here are my four favorite handmade projects you can complete in a snap and enjoy the entire month.

DIY Easter Egg Garland Decor

This delicate egg garland is the perfect Easter decor piece in all its glittery, pastel goodness. It’s ideal for hanging above a spring-style vignette or wrapping around the stair banister. Yes, glitter can be messy, but that makes it all the more fun, right?

In my tree trimming post a few weeks ago, I mentioned I was breaking with tradition this year and going with a purple tree covered in cupcake ornaments. (My pics are after the jump.) Well, after a number of coworkers asked me to bring in pictures of said tree, we decided to share with all of you personal photos of our holiday decor. (After all, it’s impossible not to get caught up in the Christmas spirit at HGTV.) So from the Design Happens staff and our featured bloggers — Merry Christmas — from our homes…literally…to yours!

I’m loving these fantastic fall leaves:

A crisp autumn weekend is perfect for baking a little something up. These brilliantly-colored cookies can either be eaten or used to make a fall wreath, as the folks at Country Living demonstrate.

And here’s a natural wreath you can creative using actual leaves from HGTV.

What’s your tip for a fall craft featuring leaves?

  • Tell Your Friends

You’ve probably spent the past weekends prepping your garden for its long winter nap. As you harvest those fall vegetables, don’t forget to snip any remaining fresh herbs to gather for the upcoming feasts (yes, Thanksgiving is only a month away!).

If you can’t use up all that thyme, rosemary and basil while it’s fresh, consider drying the bounty. Load up a homemade solar herb dryer (made from an old picture frame, wire mesh and suction cups) with your favorites and hang them in a sunny window — talk about a fresh kitchen design idea!

Once they’ve dried, just store the herbs in old spice bottles or Mason jars. Or if you’re extra crafty, why not create your own fragrant kitchen wreath? Then you can enjoy their beauty and have herbs on hand for that evening’s dinner. DIYnetwork.com has some helpful steps for making a decorative herb wreath, and Better Homes & Gardens has a living-herb version.

Herb wreaths are a lovely melding of two of my passions: natural décor and food! But sadly this year, growing herbs didn’t make my to-do list. For folks like me, there’s always pre-made. Organicbouquet.com sells one made with organic rosemary, thyme, bay leaves and dried chili peppers for a pop of color — the green-and-red palette has a bit of a Christmas feel, too:

Vivaterra.com also has an organic version, made with a more varied collection of marjoram, dill, thyme, sage, lavender, anise, cinnamon sticks, yarrow and, again, chili peppers for a little zing:

And Surlatable.com’s take comes with fresh bay, sage, purple oregano, Santa Cruz oregano, lavender and chile de arbol, all pesticide-free and suitable for cooking:

I can just smell them now. Scrumptious!
