Special Announcement: Yes, Virginia, there is an HGTV “Green” Home
We’re going green! Next year — in addition to the HGTV Dream Home 2008 in Florida — you’ll be able to enter the very first HGTV “Green” Home Giveaway for a chance to win a custom-built, fully-furnished home! The home will be built using eco-friendly materials, energy-saving appliances and natural textiles. Keep checking HGTV.com for more news on the Green Home including location, timing for the giveaway, an online home tour…the works!
In the meantime, stay right here for more news on the HGTV Dream Home Giveaway 2008, which begins on Jan. 1, 2008. As you know, the next HGTV Dream Home is being built now in Islamorada, Fla. That means next year you’ll have TWO giveaways to enter for a chance to win a home.
And there’s going to be a lot more green in HGTV’s programming lineup in the near future, too:
Red, Hot and Green is a one-hour special devoted to “green” design, featuring craftsman and green enthusiast Carter Oosterhouse and “eco-stylist” Danny Seo. It premieres on HGTV Sunday, June 10 at 9pm e/p, and we will also have tons of content from the special on HGTV.com starting in late May.
And Ed Begley, Jr. along with wife Rachelle Carson Begley are back with a second season of HGTV’s critically-acclaimed series Living with Ed. The Emmy-nominated actor and passionate environmentalist will be back in all-new episodes starting Sunday, Aug. 26 at 10pm e/p, immediately following HGTV Design Star.

Cant wait till the next contest.I really could use a new home with the disabilities my wife and I have. A nice Ranch home
Yea,
Thanks for listening. The beyond the scrabble board clues were right the letters not on the board spelled Florida and Virginia.
OK I’ll be the first to comment. My favorate color is green so good job and keep up the good work.
Great News-Thanks for the information, can not wait.
well, per my comments on the previous blog post, I never thought there was enough interest in the ‘green’ housing market to warrant a environmental friendly themed giveaway. Apparently I was wrong.
Obviously the Dream Home giveaway is a very successful venture and HGTV is trying to expand it. Good for them, and good for us.. we get a second giveaway. I hope Joan will be involved in this one away too.
Better build it high & dry with global warming, unusal weather patterns, and rising oceans water within the next century!!! Otherwise, it will be the first ocean floor dream home.
hi thats great my favorate color is green.i love trying to win the HGTV DREAM HOME,one of these days i will win.at least thats what i tell my husband, someones going to win,i hor its me.
How about building a dream home on the rocky coast of Maine? It’s wicked good!
Way to go HGTV!! I’m not a “passionate” enviromentalist per say, but I’m working on it. A ‘green’ home would absolutely be my Dream Home. Thanks for keeping the enviroment’s (and I suspect your viewers’) interest in mind.
Ahh but Mike P, not only good for us(viewers) and good for them(HGTV)…a green house is good for Mother Earth.
Great job HGTV! Hopefully this venture will create an increased awareness of going green, green products we can all incorporate into our own lives and homes, and info the companies that provide those products.
I hope they get Ed Begley, Jr involved somehow…it just seems like a great match.
Can’t wait for more info!
Now yer Talking!
I am more excited about the Green Home than the Dream Home! Way to step up HGTV!
Now that the HGTV Dream Home is going to be in Florida, did anyone think of the cost for insurance? My 2100 sq. ft house went from $740 to $1400 and my sister who lives in Melbourne near the coast (not on it) her insurance went from around $1000 to $8000 just in the last few months.
Way to go!!! And may I suggest a little something along the lines of Hybrid or Alternate Fuels in the garage…
See people don’t make up these blogs after all!!! “Red, White and Green” is advertised on TVTimes site as I seen it almost 1 1/2 weeks ago now. It states June 2008 for the giveaway in addition to the Annual HGTV Dream Home. The TV show will show the house in progress. Wow, now another Green show on top of that too! HGTV ROCKS…(Sorry Sandra, but the “Red Hot & Green” television special premiering on June 10 has nothing to do with the HGTV “Green” Home Giveaway that’s coming in 2008. FC)
Just the thought of having a “green” home and already being an organic veggy person! How wonderful that would be!!!
Thank you.
Have been asking for this ever since even before the Dream Home Message Board started, then on it, & then on the Environmental MB.
This is truly exciting.
Now, is this the start of your build-up to where the Green Home will be?
I enjoyed watching Ed Begley and Rachelle’s interactions last year. I’m looking forward to catching more new info on a green home next year on the program. I must say I wouldn’t mind winning a “green home” too.
Happy there is two homes to look at and enter for.
Fcole: Thank you so very much for this posting as I have seen the article on “Red, White and Green” a few weeks ago and it seems alot of doubters out there unless information is from you, at the top. I am anxiously waiting for the show to begin. My husband says, another reason to never change the channel from HGTV. Keep up the GREAT work.
Fcole,
What is the “Red, Hot and Green”? I haven’t heard of that one yet. I only thought HGTV was doing the Green home giveaway in June 2008? Along with the Annual Dream Home, of course. Too many shows with close names and almost the same plot. I am an HGTV fan, I will stick with your shows. Thank you for the personal message, that’s pretty cool.
How cool is HGTV! I can’t wait! Love watching Green shows and I am trying to incorporate ideas into my life. I just wish it was a less expensive change for the major items. Well maybe I will win the Green home and the money will not be a factor!!!
Green home … What a great giveaway. And what would be better than a Hybrid a fully electric sports car – Tesla Roadster http://www.teslamotors.com . It would be great if the Green Dream Home had Composting or Vermicomposting. I been looking into composting in the small back yard I have and it looks like worms might be great (http://www.ciwmb.ca.gov/Organics/Worms/)
Living in CA.
Kudos!!! to HGTV is just keeps getting better, I’m really looking forward to your new shows and to hear more about the new home.
Yea!!!, Mother Earth will be pleased. Now if we can keep building green homes, end our need for oil, and start prosecuting more heavily on polluters, maybe we might just save this planet and ourselves. I get so aggravated at people just trashing our home ( earth ), that I want to scream. God Bless Al Gore for his movie, and HGTV for this home. It’s a start, a wonderful start. Green is Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is too cool. I am really excited about the green home. It will be interesting to see where it is and what it has, and how they do it. I have to admit that I am still partial to the Islamorada home though. It is still my dream. Both I am sure will be spectacular and I can’t wait to see them and have a chance to win either of them. I am addicted to HGTV!!!! And, I am working on getting my hubby in to it as well. He is as excited about the DH08 as I am. Thanks HGTV. It just keeps getting better all the time.
GREEN GREEN GREEN GO HGTV THANKS HGTV GREEN IS MY FAVORITE COLOR (HA hA) AND GREEN LIVING IS A NICE WAY TO BUILD AND EDUCATE OTHERS ABOUT CHANGING BAD HABITS. YOU SAID IT WAS CUSTOM BUILT DOES THAT MEAN THE WINNER WILL BE INVOLVED IN THE DECISIONS AND BE EDUCATED ALONG THE WAY. I LIKE THIS IDEA AND IT INTERESTS ME. I’M THINKING GREENER EVERYDAY. PEOPLE REALLY DO NEED TO START CONSIDERING OUR EARTHLY RESOURCES AND RECYCLE MORE. PEOPLE SHOULD REMEMBER AND RESPECT WHAT GOD GIVETH (CREATED) YOU KNOW THE EARTH, HE(GOD) CAN TAKE IT BACK. MOST PEOPLE:DO NOT APPRECIATE WHAT THEY HAVE: LIKE THIS BEAUTIFUL EARTH THAT GOD CREATED FOR US ALL. HOW DO PEOPLE EXPECT TO GET BLESSED WHEN THEY DON’T CARE TO TAKE CARE OF PEOPLE /ANIMALS OR THEIR ENVIRONMENTS.
I LIKE THE ED SHOW IT’S FUNNY AND EDUCATIONAL HIS WIFE THINKS LIKE MOST PEOPLE IT COULD BE EMBARRASING AT TIMES AND TRUTHFULLY I WOULD HAVE FOUGHT AGAINST THE UGLY RAIN BARRELS TOO, I LOVED IT WHEN SHE REMOVED THEM AND CUT THE GUTTER HERSELF AND PUT IT BACK. I THINK ED SHOULD TRY TO MAKE IT UP TO HER AND BUY HER SOME PRETTY BIG PLANTING POTS AND PUT A DRAIN SPOUT PLUG ON IT FOR HIM TO RECYCLE THE WATER AND SCREENING ON TOP WITH GARDEN PEBBLES . AND A COPPER CHAIN FOR THE WATER TO DRIP DOWN THIS WOULD PROTECT KIDS/ANIMALS FROM DROWNING. I’M WITH HER YOU CAN DO THOSE THINGS A LITTLE BIT MORE PLEASING TO THE EYE AND MORE PEOPLE WOULD BE MORE INTERESTED. I COULD TOTALLY SEE MY HUSBAND TINKERING ON THE GREEN STUFF LIKE SOLAR PANELS AND BATTERIES. HE COULD TOTALLY HANDLE THAT HE LIKES TO REBUILD MOTORS ON EVERYTHING. AND ENJOY IT.
I’M SO EXCITED TWO HOMES NEXT YEAR. I DIDN’T MISUNDERSTAND THAT DID I? WOW -O- WOW. AND A SHOW WITH CARTER O. O HOW NICE! I WATCHED HIM ON TRADING SPACES. LOVE HIM, HE SEEMS VERY SWEET, AND SMART AND TALENTED, THIS IS A TRUE STORY ABOUT CARTER, BEFORE MY HUSBAND AND I DECIDED TO HAVE MORE KIDS. I DECIDED AND DEMANDED IF I HAD A BOY IT WOULD BE NAMED CARTER. BECAUSE HE’S SO CUTE! AND BECAUSE HE’S A CARPENTER AND SO IS MY HUSBAND! I THOUGHT THE NAME WOULD FIT A SON FOR US … AND GUESS WHAT IT DOES…
Hooray for HGTV! I love it! Is the green home going to have it’s own blog or will you be titillating us on this blog with clues to the location of the new Green Home? fcole, you know we are game. Can’t wait for 2008 now, but the fun of watching the Islamorada home being built is wonderful, so I’ll savor every moment. I love all the new shows on HGTV and I’m so glad Ed and Rachel will be back with a new season…thanks for all the great info fcole. Kathy in Baton Rouge
It’s too bad that California is out of the running because there is a beautiful little town in Nothern CA that would of been the perfect spot for the Dream Home…….”Trinidad, CA” is absoutely breathtaking. It’s called “The Emerald Forest”. With the majestic Redwoods at it’s back and the mighty Pacific Ocean as it’s front door. The fishing and hunting is wonderful. But like I said, it’s too bad.
i watched a show last year i thought on hgtv. where they were showing homes and how they were enviromently friendly. examples being. solar panals and collecting rain for flushing and watering plants as well as recyclling tires for retaining walls.
not that i think those are “green” type of house, but i hope that features like those are used in order to make the home as eco friendly as possible. it will also be nice to have that info out there for the large groups to see how they too could make small changes to homes pre-existing and those to be built, that would make a diffrence. i hope that they provide lots of links to products used.
can you pass that along to the ones in charge.. give us lots of links so that we too can help with the “green” team.
I would like to see a future HGTV Dream House built on Mount Desert Island, Maine. This island is one of the most beautiful places in North America where mountains meet the sea. And Maine is the “Way Life Should Be.”
Great idea!! I think that a “green home” contest is exciting! But, I will stay reserved until the “green home” location is revealed.
Yes, Virginia, there realy is a Santa Claus, and his name is HGTV and he is wearing GREEN. Mother Earth will be so grateful, and so will I and many, many others. Thanks fcole! Please keep us updated on both of these homes being built for 2008. Are you going to give us clues as to the location of the Green Home? And will you please let us see at least one floor plan of the home on Islamorada. HGTV, you are the GREATEST! Thanks!
Excitement doesn’t even say how I feel about this. I just can’t wait to see the finished product and see where it’s going to be. I just hope it’s not Florida again. I’m thinking more like Pa. Thanks again HGTV
This blog is really awesome to keep us updated with what is going on with the Dream Home 2008 and the Green Home Giveaway. Looking forward to all the future posts from you, fcole, so we will know the facts!
It would have been wonderful if I could have won Dream Home 2007…but winning 2008 will be even more wonderful as I have always lived in the mid-west…ice storms, blizzards, no power…also it is delightful to be happy for “The Winners of 2007″. Sorry to read about the bad mannered losers -
Dying to see this home built step-by-step!
Could be in California, lots of green building there.
Both states are beautiful, I am sure your homes will be also. Can you enter to win both? Wouldn’t that be a trip If one person or couple won both!! I hope that it’s me and mine. I miss my Mom (Sophie) she died 7 years ago today.
God’s speed always
Mar
How about bringing the Dream Home to New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment? Average year round temps in the 70′s for most of the state and the most beautiful sunsets in the world! We have it all, mountains, deserts, plains, and 360 days of sunshine!
This great! We need to get away from anything that is totally dependant on oil companies and keep our air as clean as possible. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
The green home is in Virginia… (The special anouncement at top says Yes, Virginia… ) right….which part of virginia? Mountain or ocean? You guys who don’t like the cold weather Virginia is probably not for you.. I live in KY, VA climate is similar to us most of the time. You never know what you are getting weather wise from day to day. One day you are hot wearing shorts with the air on, rain, thunderstorms dodging tornado warnings and the next day you are back in your coats with the heat on watching the snow flurries. Big climate swings especially in fall and in spring.
But it is a beautiful state. And surprising from day to day. That’s what I love about KY. Now VA is my neighboring state. Blue ridge mountains to ocean view.. great pick hgtv.
Are you gonna build it with hay and stuccod walls? Or with recycled barn timbers and floors? Use old rock, brick, and even glass recycled tiles. You could use flea market finds like wood furnitures and paint/stain it with earth friendly paints, stains or dyes. You can use antique/flea market accessories. It would be great to re-use things that are in great shape but sitting around collecting dust by recycling the good stuff. This could help our environments and these items in waiting could be used and not junking up places and spaces. I always liked the old saying ” one man’s junk is another’s treasure.” We all love a good bargain. And we all love creativity in the way things can be reused. Then you could splurge in the budget on the natural materials for curtains and blankets and best environmentally friendly appliances and air and heating units and water saving plumbing for tubs, showers and toilets. Because we all still want air conditioning and heat. It gets hot. Solar power would be nice. I’m not sure about self composting toilets unless someone is willing and into making their on fertilizer. I’m sure the local sewer plants retreat and recycle water somehow. Catching rain water with decorative rain catchers(ed) for watering plants and washing vehicles I do see. Maybe have a sistern for that. Have a small green house or raised garden/ flower beds in interesting landscaping shapes. So people can grow some of their own veggies and fruits and it would be easy on backs and more appealing to adults and children to keep up with it and handicapped people could reach in to them from their chairs as well. Is Carter and Ed teaming up on this one? How fun would that be! Ed seems so nice and down to earth I’m sure he would even try to teach anyone how to use the solar power. IF people don’t know how to use it. Any way I’m very excited and hope to see the building of this home and be educated for a better future for my kids and my future grand babies and yours. Don’t forget the new hybrid vehicles. There are some really nice ones out now. Thanks hgtv and ed and other earth friendlies for caring about our earth. Hopefully people will change for the better. And start taking care of themselves and our world and others.
WOW! To think someone could win both homes in the same year. I somehow doubt that will be allowed, there will probably be something in the rules that if you win one you will not be eligible for the other, but who knows. I think the fact there will be two BIG winners in a one years time is awesome. Can’t wait to find out where the Green home will be. HAPPY EASTER HGTV AND FANS.
You should build the 2009 dream home in Narragansett, RI !
I love green because green means hope,my house is green too and I hope to win the HGTV home 2008.
Going “green” is the theme….sounds like a winner….and Virginia is soooo nice……
Where can I sign up for the contest and when? Hope Washington will be next on the list….
The perfect place to build a Virginia Dream Home is at the crest of the Blueridge Mountains where I-77 passes through, Fancy Gap, VA., it also intersects with the Blueridge Parkway here. There you can find 80 mile views of the North Carolina piedmont, Pilot Mountain rising in the distance, the lights of Winston Salem, some 50 miles in the distance. This beautiful location already boasts some extraordinary homes in some unreal locations. Great food, great mountain music at the nearby Mountain Music Amphitheatre and Interpretive Center at Fishers Peak on the Parkway. What better place to live and to showcase with one of your outstanding homes.
Art V, yes, people need to be aware of that as well….
Green is great for environment…all for that…
FCOLE, Please clear up the idea some bloggers have that the “Yes, Virginia” meant that the Green Home will be built there. As I previously posted, I think the phrase was referring to a Santa quote. Obviously, some people have never heard “Yes, Virginia, there wealy is a Santa Claus”. So I don’t think the location of the Green Home has been revealed yet. Of course I could be entirely wrong, and will stand corrected gracefully. PLEASE clear this up, fcole. Thanks
Green is good, Florida? well I guess thats ok! I hope it will be able to stand up to a force 5 hurricane. thats why is should be a elevated Concrete geodesic dome. There is a company out there that makes them.

Just food for thought!
