Special Announcement: Yes, Virginia, there is an HGTV “Green” Home
We’re going green! Next year — in addition to the HGTV Dream Home 2008 in Florida — you’ll be able to enter the very first HGTV “Green” Home Giveaway for a chance to win a custom-built, fully-furnished home! The home will be built using eco-friendly materials, energy-saving appliances and natural textiles. Keep checking HGTV.com for more news on the Green Home including location, timing for the giveaway, an online home tour…the works!
In the meantime, stay right here for more news on the HGTV Dream Home Giveaway 2008, which begins on Jan. 1, 2008. As you know, the next HGTV Dream Home is being built now in Islamorada, Fla. That means next year you’ll have TWO giveaways to enter for a chance to win a home.
And there’s going to be a lot more green in HGTV’s programming lineup in the near future, too:
Red, Hot and Green is a one-hour special devoted to “green” design, featuring craftsman and green enthusiast Carter Oosterhouse and “eco-stylist” Danny Seo. It premieres on HGTV Sunday, June 10 at 9pm e/p, and we will also have tons of content from the special on HGTV.com starting in late May.
And Ed Begley, Jr. along with wife Rachelle Carson Begley are back with a second season of HGTV’s critically-acclaimed series Living with Ed. The Emmy-nominated actor and passionate environmentalist will be back in all-new episodes starting Sunday, Aug. 26 at 10pm e/p, immediately following HGTV Design Star.

The green house must be for me. I love florida living. The green house is just the iceing on the green cake
I think that up and near the Blue Ridge Parkway near Boone N.C. What with global warming and the risk of coastline property floods … a high cool place of such beauty would be ideal.
Dear HGTV,
Wow! TWO homes to dream about winning! I like the idea of an energy saving Green Home! We all need to think about trading in our big gas-guzzlers for hybrids! Let’s pass on a beautiful Earth to our grandchildren! Please post the floor plans for both homes sooner rather than later…I can’t wait to begin daydreamin of winnin in 2008! Thanks a million plus!
I love it that there will be a “green” home built. I am hoping, and maybe this has already been addressed, that your homes will be accessible for those in a wheelchair such as myself. I really enjoy watching the homes being built and I love entering with the hope of winning but it is always sad to think that I might not be able to get into the house even if I won. With this aging population of us baby boomers it would probably be prudent to make a house accessible anyway. Thanks for listening
hey i loveeeee the dream home its awsome its soooooo beutiful i just would like to see the floor plan lol
Applause on going with a sustainable design concept! I add that given that the 2007 Dream House is being built in the Florida Keys I hope you will be building an ICF home that will not only be energy efficient and very quiet but will withstand those all-too-prevelent Florida hurricanes!!
I’ll be looking forward to the environmentally friendly home being built starting in June. Ed sounds like he’s on top of another great project!
A green (environmentally friendly) home will teach viewers (us) how we can incorporate green into our own homes and avoid further global warming.
From the appliances in our homes labeled with the EnergyStar label to a home off the grid, each of us can value the education Mr. Begley will provide!
A cottage style beach home overlooking the water in Florida would be a fun build. I wonder what will be in store for the build?
We voted for a green home and we got it.
Thank you HGTV for granting us our WISH.
I think it’s wonderful that first of all that they are going to build an environmentally friendly home and second of all that so many of you have comnmented on which types of homes should be used and where to be weather friendly!I hope that HGTV READS your comments and sincerely takes your suggestions into consideration. I just found this site and will definitely return.Thank you all and God bless you and yours!
The only reason I don’t mind paying my high cable bill is your station. HGTV is the best! And now you’re goin’ green, that’s wonderful!
Love the Dream Home and I participate every year…but honestly wouldn’t be able to afford to keep it. The green home will more likely not get sold after it’s won.
Of course, I wish there could be a “green renovation” contest where the homeowner could have their own home renovated to use environmentally friendly and cost-efficient products. WIN-WIN situation for those of us who love our homes and want to save on energy costs, etc.
I am so excited you will be doing a GREEN HOME !
We need to take care of our environment!! We all need to reuse/recycle and find better energy sources . We all need to be more responsible in what we are doing to our earth .I think Oregon would be a great place for this GREEN HOME . I am looking forward to this upcoming GREEN HOME contest .
I always wanted a home for me and my kids we would love to travel and live in Florida.
I hope the Green Dream will be factory built – - that’s the eco-friendly way to go!
hello! when will we be able to start entering for this green home! i never won anything big but i still enter!! good luck to all that dose enter!
We voted and got our Green Home. Where or Where can this Green Home be. I am so impressed with HGTV about this choice.
Doggonet we who want to help save our planet have arrived. Hope the trend continues.
Thanks to those who are involved in making this happen.
I am so impressed. I love the HGTV Dream Homes. They truly have been lovely and lavish. But the green home wins my heart, sight unseen. Way to go, HGTV! You’re the best! Can hardly wait until the unveiling!
Please visit us at the HGTV Environmentally Friendly Site. We are Green and hope you will post about your favorite wishes for the new

RETRO FIT MY HOME GREEN!
The Homestead Preserve in Bath County would be an ideal location for the green build to take place. Preservation and Conservation are prominent to the area. The home would be astounding in such a setting! Plus, there appears to be some great golf courses located on those rolling greens in Virginia.
If you would surprise everyone (including me) and build in Wisconsin USA, and, I might win, I could live near my gandchildren. Sorry to use so many I’s but that would just be too grand to be near them. Too bad that lady doesn’t realize Al Gore is “a man for himself”. People should do their fairshare of homework.
Bravo, HGTV! I hope you are going to take the Green home all the way: windmill power, solar power, building / positioning the home according to the microclimate and the macroclimate of the area where the home is being built, zerocapes, etc. and that you’ll be educating viewers every step of the way. This could be the newest “extreme home makeover” show and could have lasting postive effects for generations to come. Go all the way with this one!
Will there be space to park my three Hummers? Just kidding, of course…
A GREEN Dream Home! Good job HGTV! Now this is my only problem….I love this house, BUT, this is the year that will not see me entering, unless it is on the chance that I may win and then definitely will sell immediately.
Is anyone looking at the terrain? So closed in by water, which would have been the best ever, BEFORE I became aware of Tsunamis and their destruction.
Thank GOD i was able to read about this. Green home. Oh that makes me miss home. Yes i was born and raised in the Philippines and my husband was born and raised in hawaii. All year round all we see is green. And i hope and pray that i will be part of this green home contest. This would benefit also my parents that will be joining us when all their paper works to come here in the states will be done. You all take care. Lets go GREEN.
I would think I have died and gone to heaven if I could move to the Keys. Please , please let it be me that finally wins the house. (sigh!)
Since there is only 1 winner, (ok, this year only 2), I would like to see HGTV give away more to the less lucky. How about they have a contest when they put in the… say tile and someone wins tile; when they put in laminate or hardwood they win that; when they put in the windows they win that;new laundry/kitchen appliances;plumbing fixtures they win those, etc. etc. It would even be nice if they chose someone to win having their whole, (front and back), yard landscaped. (I know mine looks like the lunar landing.) It would sure make more of us winners and more companies getting people to send info to for entering.
This is so great u are doing a green home! i am a strong believer in going green and i think your home will have a huge influence on people! everyone needs to realize how important it is to take care of our earth! thanks a bunch hgtv! i will def be entering the contest!
GUYS- OK, JUST BECAUSE IT’S CALLED A “GREEN HOUSE”, IT DOESN’T ACTUALLY MEAN THE COLOR OF IT IS GREEN! THEY’RE SAYING IT’S LIKE, ECO-FRIENDLY AND GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT. YALL NEED TO WATCH ” GET FRESH WITH SARA SNOW’!
Thank you, HGTV, for embracing this movement and leading the industry with this kind of programming. I’ll be watching, and I will encourage friends and family to watch, too. Keep up the good work and let’s hope your president gets on board soon.
Thank you HGTV for going green. Now, it might become important in the minds of all if they see it on your programs. My husband and I have wanted to implement energy saving features, such as solar energy for heat and eectricity, in our home for years, but the cost are so high. Now with all the buzz and your shows promoting it maybe the costs will come down and the average homeowner out there will be able to afford to really get the process going. Keep recycling and promoting energy efficient products America! It’s important for our future.
GREAT !!!!
Finally 2 homes and going green! I am so pleased to hear “Going Green” I been driving a desiel car for yrs. and have been looking into eco friendly way to improve my home.Winning a Green home would be a dream come true.Your programing has been my inspiration in inproving my home and garden. THank You
Lorrie Kozak
Islamorada, huh? Never mind green! What kind of construction are you using to withstand/survive hurricanes? Being on one of the Keys, that WILL be an issue.
Is there time to sneak sustainable products and mechanisms into the regular HGTV Dream Home 2008 in addition to the green of the “Green” Home 2008? At least pick a fuel efficient or hybrid car for the driveway eh! Heck, make the driveway out of some strong surfaced solar panels while you’re at it. Is there such thing as a “water car,” where the engine separates water into hydrogen and oxygen, eliminating the need for hydrogen fueling stations, and the car’s only exhaust would be oxygen? Think of all the places boats/ ships could go with out needing to refuel or making all that toxic exhaust from dirty oil fuel. Yuk!
And I would definitely suggest a warm climate for the Green Home 2008 where natural ventilation is possible around the year, or maybe a cooler climate where at least there is access to thermal ground heat. Go off the grid HGTV! No air-conditioning or heating! Another idea – start an HGTV Green Research /Development show or a green home “inventors” show for people who come up with green products and materials for the home….. continue to help integrate innovative home ideas eventually changing the way we live, consume, and make waste. When you poop, 4 years later, you can scoop! Can you imagine, how ridiculous that seems, but, hmmm…maybe for the Green Home.
HGTV ROCKS!
FLORIDAAAAAAA!!!!I always wanted a GREEN HOMEEE….
First of all, i would like to fully support someone named Becky who posted her comments on this site about building the 2009 dream home- by having the winner picked in advance, and having america watch them build their dream home over the course of the year- i think that’s a great idea, and i’m behind it 100%. It let’s people accomadate the home to their needs. Second, i posted a blog on here like a week ago, but it never got posted, so, i’ll say this again to the people out their who are very confused without realizing it: WHEN HGTV SAYS THEY ARE BUILDING A GREEN HOME- IT DOESN’T MEAN THE COLOR OF THE HOUSE IS GREEN! it means it’s eco-friendly and the like. Sheesh. Oh, and hgtv- thank u so much for building this- people need to be aware how im prtant it is to protect our environment!
My husband called me to come check out this new show “Red Hot and Green” that aired tonight. Loved it and all the ideas. Hopefully as the show grows and expands it will include all the small steps, such as how our choices in everyday products make a big impact. I will keep making small every day choices until it it time to tackle the bigger projects (ultimate recycling, everything we have is still good and most is up-to-date on efficiency) is still good!
PERHAPS THE GREEN HOME COULD INCORPORATE SOLAR PANELS OR SOME OTHER FORM OF TECHNOLOGY THAT WOULD ALLOW THE HOUSE TO USE ENERGY DIRECTLY FROM THE EARTH. It would be even more awesome if all of the house’s energy needs were provided directly from natural sources (sun, water, air). It’d be a heck of a lot more affordable in this case.
please remember genesis 03@ i veen in this contry for 54 years working hard, and i never won anything secular, spiritually i have Jesus as my savior and i’m going to have eternal life with God when i pass from this life to eternity, but i will like to see how it feels to have a beautifull house like the one HGT GIVES AWAY.Thank you for making all those winners happy. Yours Trully Ana Torres may God bless HGTV.
I’ve heard a lot about “starter” homes. How about a home for those of us who are at the other end of the spectrum? The new Green Home would be wonderful here in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This town has soooo much to offer everyone and has made so much progress in the last 20 years. We were a small industrial town, struggling with bad air and pollution. Now, we have a thriving city with a breathtaking river front which includes a fabulous aquarium, riverboat, museums, art district and a terrific family oriented park complete with a carousel (with hand carved horses)and a water park. From Rock City, you can really see 7 states again. Come visit the “Chattanooga Choo-Choo”, the civil war battlefields, and the famous “Incline”. Even if you decide not to build the green house here, come check us out. You’ll be glad you did.
How about a couple of windmills and all the accezories to convert to energy? I think those stainless steel(?) things ara not only a good idea they are rather artistic.
We love GREEN house. We are building an Insulated Concrete Form home (ICF). I got this idea from the Dream Builder show of HGTV, hosted by Scott Murphy (?) many years back. I had always dreamed to build this ICF home. It only uses 44% energy. Finally we are so lucky to find an Indianapolis builder who is willing to build it for us. It’s almost done and we are moving into the house within 2 weeks. I can tell the difference already. When it is 95 degrees outside, indoors is so well insulated, it is only about 78 degrees. Very comfortable. We installed all the energy saving light bubles. I am planning on install solar PV panel soon. I really thank HGTV for such a great show. I hope we could win the backyard splash so they could design a green back yard. We are running out of money. WE LOVE HGTV!!!
I watched the show RED,Hot, and Green. on June 10th. I was in shock to hear that mini blinds give off toxic gases from the sunlight. My home is full of them, but not for long. Thanks for the info.
I’ve always loved HGTV and now HGTV going green gives me one more reason to really love you guys. How about Kerrville, TX for the location? It’s in the beautiful Texas hill country with 4 seasons every year…close to San Antonio with the famous Riverwalk and Austin which is the live music capital of the world! Austin is well known for being green…not everyone yet but we’re having fun converting all the others. I know just the spot too with water, wildlife and close enough to the city and airport so they could enjoy the countryside. The sky and air is pure there too. Something to think about!
You guys make the most beauty full houses I’ve ever seen. I can wait to see what you guys have in store for us, for next year. I will enter next year. Tha would be a dream come true.
This is Great! I can’t wait. I think it is so awesome that HGTV is helping us become more aware of what we can do to help our country. I do little things around the house, but never really thought about using Eco friendly textiles for my decorating. Thanks HGTV. Excited to see the house. When will it be previewed in HGTV?
WHAT BETTER PLACE TO GO GREEN THAN IN NORTHERN MAINE, AMONGST THE MOUNTAINS AND LAKES. NOT EVERYONE LIKES THE HOT CLIMATE. THERE’S NOTHING LIKE THE NORTHERN CRISP, CLEAN AIR – ANY SEASON!!!
Love the idea of a dream home in virginia…always wanted to retire there and start a small ranch with horses and llamas…green,,,animals sounds like a match to me..
Yes, these Dream Homes are wonderful, but why are they so huge? For the average family, its just a waste of space. Just how many rooms does a family need? I think if the scale was cut in half, the house would still be plenty big enough. How about building one in Idaho? There are a lot of beautiful places to build here.
