Special Announcement: Yes, Virginia, there is an HGTV “Green” Home

We’re going green! Next year — in addition to the HGTV Dream Home 2008 in Florida — you’ll be able to enter the very first HGTV “Green” Home Giveaway for a chance to win a custom-built, fully-furnished home! The home will be built using eco-friendly materials, energy-saving appliances and natural textiles. Keep checking HGTV.com for more news on the Green Home including location, timing for the giveaway, an online home tour…the works!

In the meantime, stay right here for more news on the HGTV Dream Home Giveaway 2008, which begins on Jan. 1, 2008. As you know, the next HGTV Dream Home is being built now in Islamorada, Fla. That means next year you’ll have TWO giveaways to enter for a chance to win a home.

And there’s going to be a lot more green in HGTV’s programming lineup in the near future, too:

Red, Hot and Green is a one-hour special devoted to “green” design, featuring craftsman and green enthusiast Carter Oosterhouse and “eco-stylist” Danny Seo. It premieres on HGTV Sunday, June 10 at 9pm e/p, and we will also have tons of content from the special on HGTV.com starting in late May.

And Ed Begley, Jr. along with wife Rachelle Carson Begley are back with a second season of HGTV’s critically-acclaimed series Living with Ed. The Emmy-nominated actor and passionate environmentalist will be back in all-new episodes starting Sunday, Aug. 26 at 10pm e/p, immediately following HGTV Design Star.

  1. Glad to see HGTV thinking about the environment. I now call Virginia home, but grew up in South Carolina before air conditioning was invented, upon moving to Virginia with the change in temperature and humidity found I can live without it along with other things that harm the environment. Way to go HGTV.

  2. A green home is great but like others I think a more simple homey look and feel is needed and why not have enough land with free lessons on wildlife rehabilation included with pens and flight cages? That would truely be a green home.

  3. I’m glad the next Green Dream Home is in FloridaI have traveled 85percent around the u.s and in my opinion there is no place better. My family and I live in Clermont, FL.

  4. I just watched one of your programs. My conclusion… “I need help to change my one bedroom apartment!”. I had plans but after seeing your program I could use your knowledge to change my pad to a “green” one!. Can you help me?

  5. I would love to see the HGTV team make a dream home that is affordable to the average person. Like a $500,000. dream home. Some thing a person could win and keep to actually live their dream! Instead of having to worry how fast it will sell before the taxes, etc. are due. If they build homes with a value of $500,000., they could build 20 homes or more and have that many winners. Life would be happy for many people not just one person.

  6. Keep up the good work, we are at this time in a transplant house ( the gift of life) in Rochester MN. More and more we here that after transplant of stem cells for Multiple Myleoma and other blood cancers that we need to be free of mold, and in a more natural enviornment. Since we now live in an old farm house we must sell it soon and do not know where we will go because we have a large mortgage and will not realize enough when selling to purchase another home…anyway this will be wonderful for so many people going thru bone marrow transplants…thank you
P.s. you did have an article about a woman who lived in the Carolina’s who was building small green homes, wondering if you could let me know her name again I would like to find out more…
I will be one of the first to enter your green home.

  7. WE were hoping that you were coming our way after the dream home in Colorado. I am a little bummed that you reverted back to the south/south east area again. It would be nice to see a dream home on the west coast in the near future. Oregon, Washington and California are all beautiful states and worthy of a georgously built HGTV Dream Home.

  11. boy i sure do need a new house, mine is about to leave town any time now. i need somewhere nice and quite, country, 5 miles to main road any road . i love south carolina but i’ll take look out mountain georgia. anywhere but maryland. lol

  12. I think green somewhere close to Tulsa would be the best of all worlds. Make sure the house is energy efficient and build, as one person wrote, a house worth 350-500K with all taxes paid!! Then you could afford to keep it! That’s the perfect dream home.

  13. I feel hgtv has always chosen the perfect locations for homes every design down to the smallest detail has been magnificent its wonderful how they not only think of the adults but they care for the children too! when they build these homes

  14. I think a green home is a wonderful idea.I also think that serpent mound would be a beautiful place for either a green or dream home

  15. I think a Green home is great. To me the best place to build it would be in Mountianair,Arizona. The weather is mild in summer and has snow in the winter. Flagstaff and Sedona are within minutes and Phoenix is about 3 hours away. The Grand Canyon is also within an easy drive and Vegas is just a few hours away! Plus no earthquakes, tornados or hurricanes!!

  17. Wow! Two homes to be given away next year! I cant wait. I am so excited about the new green house, I would love to win that one however, if I won the house in Florida I wouldn’t mind that at all either!! Thanks HGTV, you are giving away the one thing each of us prays for, a place of our own to rest our heads at night!!! I will be entering everyday!!!

DaddysDarlin on September 11, 2007 at 11:21 am
  18. I think people who have already won a home should not be allowed to enter to win another home.Let someone else have a chance to win a home.

  19. Warm regards from Barbados;
I watched your show Red Hot& Green the other night and I was thoroughly impressed, excited and touched. There was one house in particular that caught my interest. It was a house run completely off of Solar Panels. Can you please let me know who the makers of these panels are and how I can contacted them.

    Warm Regards
ALL THUMNS, FINGERS AND TOES UP!!!!

  20. OOOH! A green home! I will definitely enter every day! And as far as a vehicle in the garage, how about an all-electric Tesla – a sports car that goes from 0-60mph in 4 seconds and gets 245 MPC (miles per charge) in new EPA testing!

Be sure to use solar AND wind energy as well as green building techniques!

    Vickie C on October 1, 2007 at 2:31 am
  21. This is an excellent idea. We have to preserve our planet one step at a time. The idea of a green house is great. Please try to include ideas that the masses can incorporate. Having a green house is expensive for most people. Use solar energy as its max potential would be great.

Ivette vidal on October 8, 2007 at 12:58 pm
  22. If you build it they will come. Green is my favorite color too.

  28. I do hope I haven’t missed something, and that the green house is in Virginia. Yes, the climate can change from hot to cold overnight and then back, but that’s an old joke about 10-minute weather changes for every place I’ve ever lived except CA! No one in Southern CA knows what the word “weather” means! Anyway, I hope the Green House location is revealed soon, as I have not had time to read this site forever, and I am so excited to hear it might be VA! Which is where we want to retire in a couple of years! Make my day! VA is so gorgeous! My ancestors came there in in the 1630s, and I cannot think of another state I want to live in when I get the chance again! God bless whoever wins it, and they will be blessed with a green house!

  32. I love HGTV and have for years. I am thrilled you are going so green! My family was forced to seek green building alternatives several years ago to preserve my health. It is wonderful now that others are learning some of the things we have had to discover the hard way over the years. Thank you, thank you! It’s nice to be a little more mainstream and not the freak in town!

  43. I am so glad that HGTV is listening to the cry from America. Perhaps one day builders will quit using antiquated water heaters and help save natural gas and electric! Perhaps we need to have the govt require better building standards! Green means GO! All the way to heaven! Ed and Rachelle are a riot as well as doing a wonderful service! Keep them on for a while, maybe have them visit some other people who are just ordinary, around the country – show what different environmental needs for different climates can be met during new construction, not just removation. Carter is great, too! If I had the money, I would change my tract house a lot, to meet much more rigid environmentally friendly standards. I will be doing that a little at a time, as I can! God bless and keep on turning green!

Please be sure to share as a resource the USGBC, United States Green Building Council, http://www.usgbc.org. (It is the organization the oversees LEED ratings ). Local chapters of the national organization offer a wealth of information too as well as terrific local resources.
Get involved locally to make a difference in your community, life, world!

  47. Please, please, please, don’t use the same designer as the Dream Home, and hopefully it won’t be as bland. Green homes can be beautiful, but please don’t go with painted white kitchen cabinets and boring white tiles in the baths. Show people that green can be interesting, textural and exciting.

  50. It’s about time HGTV went green. But I won’t be entering to win it. I don’t even enter for the Dream Home Giveaway. In my mind the Dream Home Giveaway is named the Nightmare Giveaway. Not only does it raise your income taxes for the year, the cost of the insurance for the home, there most likely are state and /or local sales taxes. On more of a personal note, the location and size of the home are not what I really want.

This would be my ideal idea of a Dream Home Giveaway:

    1. Keep the $250,000 cash prize.

    2. Keep the vehicle prize.

    3. Have people enter the contest and describe there ideal home, the location and lot size or acreage (size limit of up to 5 acres) of where they would like the home built.

    4. Pick the winner, then with a budget of what they use to build the dream homes now, HGTV could buy the property and build that persons dream home. And any money is left over from the budget; add it to the cash prize.

    5. After the house is built, announce to the winner and the country who won the home.

They still can show pictures of the place being built, but don’t disclose the location till the winner is announced.

For a contest like that I would enter and if I won, I would find a way to pay the taxes on it. My Idea of a dream home is: 2000sq. ft. house built with green materials, with solar panels and a wind turbine for power, in floor heating, a garage, small barn for my chickens, and a solar powered green house.
