Keep Sharing YOUR Ideas on Where to Build an HGTV Dream Home!
Thanks so much for all the comments about great places across the United States to play host to an HGTV Dream Home! We’ve heard suggestions for everywhere from New England to the Gulf Coast to the Pacific Northwest, and of course Alaska and Hawaii.
I don’t think anyone has mentioned Las Vegas, though. We’ve had suggestions for locations in Arizona and Utah that mention the proximity of the city as a plus, but no one has lobbied for an HGTV Dream Home Las Vegas. And we’ve even had some recent experience designing a penthouse in Vegas!
Some have voted for a ranch out in the wide-open spaces, such as “somewhere in Wyoming or Montana.” Others prefer a more urban environment, maybe along Lake Michigan in Chicago or “near the Boeing plant in Seattle.”
Along with natural beauty, freedom from natural disasters is high on the list of priorities for locations. “Coast of Virginia, the weather is great, violent storms only about every 8 to 10 years, no earthquakes.” You guys are really concerned about seismic activity. At least five comments mentioned a lack of earthquakes as a plus.
Some of you already live in your dream location: Two people want us to build a home on their current lot and tear down their old house.
Thanks again for all your suggestions, and please keep sending them in. Just try to stay in the United States and remember, this is not a contest to guess where an upcoming HGTV Dream Home will be located. We certainly aren’t promising to build a home in any particular location, and this isn’t an official poll. There will be no “winner,” but we would love to hear your ideas on great places across the USA for an HGTV Dream Home.

I have to agree with all the suggestions for Minnesota. We are the Land of 10,000 lakes and have many beautiful spots with great recreation, great fishing and MINNESOTA NICE! I’d love to see something more modestly priced. You have plenty of talent to design something gorgeous for $500K. Keeping a home that you won, now that would be a dream!
I have loved all the locations and the designs of the homes, however, I think the next home should be build in Jacksonhole, Wyoming. I’ve never been there, however, those that I know that have say it’s as close to heaven you will ever get. I think we all need a little bit of heaven, don’t you?
I love your homes, but realistically no one can afford them – (sweepstakes taxes, property taxes, insurance). How many of the individuals who won were able to keep them? Why not build one or more moderate homes for the middle income bracket? Have a beautiful setting (CA,Oregon, Washington, Cape Code, Martha’s Vineyard)and professionally designed. What a dream for everyone. You wouldn’t have to provide all everyday essentials (kitchen and bathroom items, etc. to cut costs.
Hawaii, of course!
Hawaii!!!! The median price for a plain 3 bedroom 2 bath home is already $650,000! It would be a dream to have a gorgeous house on one of the islands….probably Maui or Kauai….Oahu is too commercial! MAHALO !!!!!!!
Price Hill in Cincinnati is the place to build a Dreqam Home. Incredible views of Downtown and the Kentucky Hills.
I absolutely love your idea of a “Green” home and I belive that all homes and business should be built this way as we look to the futer of our world. I would like to make another sugestion; the next home you build should also be handcapped accesible. Anyone in the world can make their home in a handicapped accesible home but, an handicaped person can not always live and function in a home built for the general public. Further my sugesion for just such a home would be in the White Mountains of Arizona. The Show Low, Lakeside and Pinetop area would be just perfect! Thank you for your time and consideration.
I couldn’t agree more with several of the comments about building more than one DH. The perfect location for the DH is any where you are surronded by loved ones. I would be perfectly happy with a dream home in Upper Michigan, along beautiful Lake Michigan. Surrounded by family, friends, and familiar faces. You could easily build a beautiful home for $500,000 or less. It would be affordable and you’d have plenty of cash to make someone else’s dream come true. This price includes property on the lake and acreage. Don’t miss out on this national treasure. Explore today!
How about a dream home in the Oregon Cascades between Medord and Klamath Falls, on the Klamath Falls side of the mountains in the Sky Lakes Resort area. Beautiful mountain views, great lakes, the Pacific Crest Trails, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, hiking, fishing and so much more to offer… Yet close enough to cities. Check it out… It would be the most ideal location, it’s God’s Country! Thank you!
You should take a look at Don Pedro Island on the west coast of Florida. It’s a barrier island, accessible only by a car ferry, located south of Englewood. It’s “like Florida used to be”–casual, uncrowded, noncommercial. One area, The Preserve of Don Pedro is accessible only by golf cart, bicycle, foot, or boat (docks on the intracoastal).
Aloha!
The Big Island of Hawaii is the ideal place to build a Dream Home. More specifically, the Waikoloa or North Kohala area of the Big Island is the unequivocal choice! There, the home can be built on the coastline with a beachfront view and flanked by PGA class golf courses and a few choice five star hotels. The area is often visited by A-list celebrities who are seeking a respite from their difficult lives.
Big Island land is pristine and paradisiacal, and it costs far less than land on the other islands. Oceanfront property on the Big Island is fee simple, which allows the dream home winner to actually own both house and land.
And, if HGTV is looking for a developer who is willing to “subsidize” the home, there are many from which to choose.
HGTV, if you want to redeem yourself — build your next Dream Home in a truly “dream” location, HAWAII!
Shellie
If the Dream Home 2009 developers are looking to build in an area completely different than the 2008 home I think that you should serioulsy consider an area in southeastern Arizona called Saguaro Ranch. It’s near Tucson, in really gorgeous desert mountain landscape on what used to be a working ranch. The lots are all native desert with cactus of all kinds, are including the majestic saguaro cactus. The developers are creating unique custom built homes that seem one with the terrain. Check it out!
I would like to see your next dream home built in America’s best kept secret–Beautiful Alamo Beach in Port Lavaca , Tx–our family’s Favorite getaway–We would live there–but if so—where we would find another Great “Getaway”???–that is- unless we wanted to tread water??
Sioux Falls South Dakota that's where my husband wants to retire to be near his family:)
Nice people, lots of art and plenty of space to build; you also might try making the house a little less expensive so maybe at least one winner will be able to keep and live in thier dream home. I know I would love to keep it and would be sad to let it go.
How about someplace in beautiful ALASKA. That would be so cool.
The USA is beautiful any where you build would be great but do us a favor and make it so the winner can live in the home. Make a million dollar house and pay the taxes. Than the person can decide if they can afford the property taxes after a year. I would love to see photos of an actualy family living in the home
Would like to get information on whom to contact about a location for building future dreamhomes. We have the perfect undeveloped island refuge, that is now ready for you. Please send me any and all info. This is really a rare gem.
Would love to see a dream home built in Sarasota, Florida; Melbourne, Florida; or Sedona, Arizona. I also vote for the idea that there should be a dream home that is built to the scale that a real family can afford and move into. It would be nice to see a “reasonable” and “believable” dream home built.
Raton, NM in the northeast part of the state. Small community but full of history and close to major metros. Could design with a SW adobe style. Or Durango CO…What a fun town for a western ranch design. Or radically different…A Manhattan penthouse.
Build a Ranch in any Western State including Alaska. I have a 145 acres 7 miles outside of Fairbanks, AK next to North Pole, AK.
Build in Eastern Tennessee outside of Knoxville overlooking the French Broad river. High up on the side of the mountain it has views of the river north and south and the Great Smokey Mountains.
Have you ever been to Mentone, Alabama? If you visit there will be no other place to consider!
I have to agree with a previous post.
“I would build my dream house on the banks of the Tennessee River in Chattanooga Tennessee. It is a beautiful location and the people here are the friendlies you will ever meet
Posted by Janice Robinson – August 3, 2007 9:34 PM”.
My fiance and I go there as often as possible. That entire area is absolutely beautiful. But after returning to Chicago this weekend from the Caribbean, I would kill to be in the keys.
Mountain Lakeside. I have 100 acres in Northeast Alabama atop Lookout Mountain . I have a lake, gorgeous woods and it adjoins a golf course!
Mountain bluff view – I have a large lot that over looks a green valley. The view is breathtaking.& sunsets are spectacular!
I have 2 1/2 acres riverside on Tennessee river. Unbelieveable view and sunsets amazing.
I suggest the Black Hills in South Dakota. An island in the prairie and one of america’s best kept secrets. Spectacular mountain vista’s meet sweeping prairie lands. Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse monuments are located here. Quaint small towns to explore throughout the hills. All the city conveniences are available in Rapid City. One visit and you’ll be amazed by the beautiful Black Hills!
I think Austin, TX would be a great location to consider.
Park City, Utah would be really nice.
A great place to build would be in Bridgeton, Maine. Skiing and winter sports in the winter and several lakes to enjoy in the summer and of course the wonderful fall foliage. In the springtime you can mountain climb on many of the wonderful mountains. This would be a house for all seasons!
I think that Edenton, NC should be the location of the next Dream Home, Edenton has been voted one of the greatest places to live in the U.S. serveral times. I have lived here for the past 36 years and argree completely. The company I work for has a privately owned Island Refugee that is currently being surveyed for 14 custom built homes. This is really a rare gem, that will be kept as natural as possiable. We are located less than hour and half drive from the Outer Banks and Norfolk, Va. We have all types of outdoor recreation available.
Holley Florida. Small town
When you think of the northwest , you think MONTANA! There is a new Ranch Preserve going on up there called THE RANCHES AT BELT CREEK. It is in central MT and they have a plan that fits in the dream home mentality. It is beautiful country, close to everything (via Great Falls) yet far enough away. Happy Building!
How about giving away a house the average person would be able to afford to keep? Anyone able to keep the current house wouldn’t need to win one, they could just buy it.
I have to agree with the dreamer that suggested St. Louis. It would be a great place or even East St. Louis. However, the dreamer that wants a little green in Washington, DC I really have to agree with. There’s enough room for us and The President no matter who he/she is. How about Baltimore, Maryland?
PLEASE BUILD A RUSTIC CABIN IN OR AROUND CHEYENNE, WYOMING. THE AREA WILL CAPTURE YOUR HEART AND LAND PRICES ARE VERY REASONIBLE.
I would like to see a dream home built anywhere in or near the French Quarter in New Orleans. Why not help rebuild New Orleans green? Many opportunities for jobs as New Orleans is rebuilding. How you would consider this site.
I read most of the postings and not many suggestions were made for New Orleans.
Las Vegas! Hands down. I would love to see one built by the lake in the suburb just outside vegas. NOW YOU'RE TALKING!!!!!
Beautiful, breezy, exciting Honolulu, HI.
Barbara Triolo
I think Branson Mo.would be a very good place to build a house.
Come to NEW HAMPSHIRE!!!!!!! Not only will your lucky winner enjoy their house, but all four seasons. We are hitting record high snow falls for this area this winter, just after a spectacular fall season. There are things to do in each season. Not only do people get four season to live and play in but, the people here are great and life is good! We can ski, swim, bike, hike, row, fish to name a very few. The fall mountains are amazingly colorful. NEW HAMPSHIRE… there no place like home!
ITHINK IT IS GOING TO BE BUILT IN MISSOURI SOMEWHERE NEAR SPRINGFIELD OR TABLE ROCK.
Hey,
Unlike most people I think that the next Hgtv Dream Home should be in Kentucky!I mean why not??There is tons of land and is a great place to build a great Dream Home! There has never been a Dream home in Kentucky So I think that there should be a change!Or I would like it if there was a Dream Home in the east part of the Eastern Part of the United States______that is my opinion. ALthough a lot of people want southern__I think that we should go and have a little bit of coutry!!Yippie Yippie Ye Haw!!!
Hi HGTV,
Well i visit MT. Shasta, CA every year and it is always so breath taking. There are so many different lakes, waterfalls, streams and towns in this area to build a dream home. I my self own property in the little town of McCloud and love every time i go there. Coming from the Bay Area its the perfect slow pace area to build and just enjoy the serenity.
Have a great day
I think the next dream home should be built around the out skirts of Boise, Idaho. It should be a monolithic dome or have dome features throughout the home. I also think it should be totally self reliant by having solar powered generators. The generators will sell the extra power to the power companies in the day and use battery power at night. If you want to see homes like I am talking about go to http://www.lifelinedomes.com
The next Hgtv dream home should be in Fayetteville, WV!!!! Built on the New River Gorge. It really is “Almost Heaven”.
I think the next Hgtv dream house should be built in the poconos, thats in PENNSYLVANIA it is very beautiful and, the air is so fresh and, it is also very quiet.
Hi! Come to Rincon, Puerto Rico, the surfing capital of the Caribbean!
This is the info I give to people who contact me about the volunteer opportunity on my land…
I have a 5 acre “organic farm” in the hills of Rincon with a view of the ocean and Desecheo Island, which lies 12 miles off the coast.
Some info on the farm… OK, first, an organic farm is what I
am manifesting. It is a jungle!! But, 20 years ago it was fully planted,
so there are lots of fruit trees! But, as the jungle slowly grew and the
owners did not maintain it it became overgrown! So, for the past 2 years I
have been slowly clearing it. Two years ago I untangled an avocado tree and
this year it produced beautiful, 1 lb avos for the first time. It was
exciting! There are tons of mango trees, also, I’ve planted several
papaya, which bear football-sized fruits! YUMMY.
Last year 4 people came down from the states to help out. I did not require a certain # of hours
for them and it worked out just fine. I plan to do the same this
year…just invite people that want to participate and will help on projects
and inspire things to take shape! I know that they may need an income and
are encouraged to find a job in town. I trust that those that live here
will maintain their camping area and together we’ll accomplish some fun
projects…a compost toilet, a kitchen and a garden, for starters. As for water…yes, need to implement something. I’ve thought about getting a water tank to catch water (but winter is dry season) or have filled by city for free. Also there is a large cement water holding container that could be utilized!
I am going to live up there in a tent, so I am looking forward to having
others living there. All I can offer is the land…a place to pitch a
tent.
So, it is really roughing it. I don’t want to make it sound glamourous. It
doesn’t have electricity or water, as I’ve mentioned.
We’ll see what happens. It is at the beginning stages, so it is exciting to
see what we create!
I surf, practice yoga, hike, camp, travel, bike, (do anything outdoors and
adventurous, really) have a dog and cat, am a Massage Therapist. I’m
looking for honest, independent, happy people to share this land!!
So, I would love to help build a GREEN, sustainable dream home here!!
