Answering Some of Your HGTV Dream Home Questions

Hello and happy Friday! Just thought I’d pop in and answer a few of your questions about HGTV Dream Home 2008 in the beautiful Florida Keys.

On TV this morning, Monica Pedersen said the paint colors would be on the web. I can’t find them and would love to know the colors used in the sun room (horizontal stripes).
-Barbara

You can find products used in the HGTV Dream Home 2008 in the HGTV MarketPlace, including furnishings, paint colors, accessories and more. The colors used for those delicious stripes in the second-floor sitting room are Sherwin-Williams Dover White and Saffron Thread.

I wonder how many square feet it is.
-Dylan

The home is approximately 3,500 square feet.

Does the SUV fit in the garage?
-Diane

Yes, the GMC Yukon Hybrid fits nicely in the garage.

Just wondering what Key this house was on?
-Tim

The HGTV Dream Home is located near mile marker 87 on the bayside of Plantation Key, next to Founder’s Park.

Where are the washer and dryer?
-Jim

Between the sitting room and the guest suite.

Has nobody noticed? There is no toilet in the master bathroom or anywhere at all on the third floor. How can you design a master bathroom with a huge shower but no toilet!
-Jane

More than a few of you were wondering where we hid the toilet in the master bath. It’s in a small room of its own directly across from that huge shower and bath enclosure.

First-floor bedroom didn’t seem to have a closet or a bathroom unless I’m missing something.
-Tony

Honestly, we weren’t intentionally trying to hide the bathrooms. The first-floor bathroom is just outside the kids’ bedroom, at the end of the hall leading from the entertainment room.

Thanks again for all the comments, and please keep them coming. If you’re going to be in the Florida Keys between now and March, you can drop by and take a tour of the house. It is really gorgeous, and there’s probably no better place to be in January than the Florida Keys. And remember to enter the HGTV Dream Home Giveaway once a day until Feb. 19 for a chance to win the home.

  1. On the off chance that we would be the winner of the house (!) we will actually be arriving in Islamorada on the 15th of March for our two week annual vacation at the Topsider there. I understand that’s the prize drawing day. What if we couldn’t be located?

  6. i would sell the house as well to. its a bad location. after next summer the home will be gone anyways because of the huricanes, did anyone see the front yard, right on the ocean which equals big massive waves , which equals destroyed home. best bet, if you win, keep the furnature and the tvs and cool stuff and sell the property,
even the car is a bad prize, hello? gas guzzler. the average person that wins cant afford to keep any of it.

  7. Why give a house to someone who already has one .Give it to someone that has lost there home in a fire!especially when that someone has been whithout home for almost 2 years!Just imagine the joy HGTV will give them!losing your home in a fire is horrible enouph, but losing a loved one along with it is a double tragedy!

  13. I am sick to my stomach about the financial situation of this home. I live in a climate where we have seen snow since Dec 1st. I was so blinded by the sun, dream home, beach that I entered everyday. Now I wish I hadn’t! I would not be able to afford living there. I did not even get my hopes up but I loved the day dreaming of it all. Compared to the other dream homes, this one is only about the designer (mistakes) and location. I probably could afford the dog house. There are many faults to this house. Kids bedroom on the first floor, no bar stools under the small counter space. My parents would not be able to walk up & down the stairs. Dumbwaiter should have been installed for the groceries. Small masterbedroom and closet. No sky lights or unique features that others DH have had in the past. I do like the picture that was drawn by the locat artist. Did I mention that one big fault are the taxes & insurance that would be needed to pay for it? WOW!!!

  14. It matters not to me whether or not I win this home…I just enjoy what enjoyment HGTV presents to the public, whether a Dream Home, sweepstakes, or delightful and inspiring TV programs. I congratulate all persons involved with this project and for presentation of such entertaining TV programs.

  15. So, can someone just spit out the reality. What is the cost to the winner of maintaining/keeping the house?

  16. Do they suprise the winner of the home on live tv, or do they pre-record it? Also, when will they draw the winner?

  17. Islamorada–My husband and I over 20yrs ago on our 1st anniversary decided to go to the Keys!
It was getting late to drive in our rental car
so, we stopped at a resort to see if they had a room available in Islamorada! They did, we were so tired! The next morning, my husband opened up the curtains to our room– both of us were speechless, the view was breath taking! We couldn’t leave! The winner will also be speechless! Beautiful, beautiful home & location!

  22. I was very disappointed in the program awarding the winner of the house last Sunday. It looked very unprofessional. The host and all the people on the program seemed to be unsure of what they were doing. If you can get it together to build a gorgeous home (or many of them) to make an exciting sweepstakes event, why not have a more polished crew doing the final night?

  26. Yuck! Look at the casita. There is a glass wall separating the bathroom from the bedroom. The TOILET is the first thing you see thru the glass wall.

  27. Hi all. Sorry, I'm not a blogger; perhaps my questions have been answered in earlier blogs. If you could humor me… I'd love to know more about the utilities and where they're located. In VT, we have 'cellars' for furnaces, water heaters, storage. What I thought was a utility room turned out to be a half bath — I just happened upon that pic, which isn't among the 'tour' pics…haven't found it since. Why is that? Another mystery — the master bedroom's closet(s). The walk-in closet referred to in the tour appears to be an awkward space between entrances containing a shallow, double-door closet bordered by the kitchen. The door to the right of the bed leads to a space, but none of the tours, photos, etc., explores it. Another qestion regarding the dorm: where do those 8 guests keep their clothing/suitcases? Thanks in advance for your replies.

  28. Loved the bunk room and the bathroom with 3 showers and wash basins. We have a small cabin in Northern Michigan and the bunkroom beds were a magnificent layout for the space. Were the bunk beds purchased or hand made? Something like this would work in our cabin, since we always have 13 to24 people in the cabin at once. I get cabin fever in the winter because we have people sleeping on air mattresses throughout the house. THE DESIGN WAS FANTASTIC!!!

  29. I was wondering, on the TV special about Dreamhome 2011 you said that the home sleeps 14. I looked at the Master BR and the Guest BR and the Ski bunk room which slept 8 that I could see and that only comes to 12, so where do the other 2 sleep? Is there a sleep sofa or an extra room I missed?
Thanks for the help! I would love to own this home, I've always had a dream to come to Vermont, ever since the movie "WHITE CHRISTMAS". thanks again

  30. Is there a half bath on the first floor?

    Aerie317 on February 8, 2011 at 7:31 am
  31. If you're speaking of the ground floor, I believe I located a half bath there as well (no pics). There's a short hallway off the living room – next to the barn door – which houses the laundry, and opposite that, the utility room. Between those two rooms is an unaccounted-for space – door jamb can be seen far right in photo 8 of laundry room tour. From the scale of the space on the 'blueprint', it must be a half bath.
