Answering Some of Your HGTV Dream Home Questions

Hello and happy Friday! Just thought I’d pop in and answer a few of your questions about HGTV Dream Home 2008 in the beautiful Florida Keys.

On TV this morning, Monica Pedersen said the paint colors would be on the web. I can’t find them and would love to know the colors used in the sun room (horizontal stripes).
-Barbara

You can find products used in the HGTV Dream Home 2008 in the HGTV MarketPlace, including furnishings, paint colors, accessories and more. The colors used for those delicious stripes in the second-floor sitting room are Sherwin-Williams Dover White and Saffron Thread.

I wonder how many square feet it is.
-Dylan

The home is approximately 3,500 square feet.

Does the SUV fit in the garage?
-Diane

Yes, the GMC Yukon Hybrid fits nicely in the garage.

Just wondering what Key this house was on?
-Tim

The HGTV Dream Home is located near mile marker 87 on the bayside of Plantation Key, next to Founder’s Park.

Where are the washer and dryer?
-Jim

Between the sitting room and the guest suite.

Has nobody noticed? There is no toilet in the master bathroom or anywhere at all on the third floor. How can you design a master bathroom with a huge shower but no toilet!
-Jane

More than a few of you were wondering where we hid the toilet in the master bath. It’s in a small room of its own directly across from that huge shower and bath enclosure.

First-floor bedroom didn’t seem to have a closet or a bathroom unless I’m missing something.
-Tony

Honestly, we weren’t intentionally trying to hide the bathrooms. The first-floor bathroom is just outside the kids’ bedroom, at the end of the hall leading from the entertainment room.

Thanks again for all the comments, and please keep them coming. If you’re going to be in the Florida Keys between now and March, you can drop by and take a tour of the house. It is really gorgeous, and there’s probably no better place to be in January than the Florida Keys. And remember to enter the HGTV Dream Home Giveaway once a day until Feb. 19 for a chance to win the home.

  7. I think the home is wonderful in every aspect so if there is anything you don’t particularly like in the house then why enter, why post comments complaining or criticizing those things there is just no reason at all so just enjoy life and stop focusing on the small things

  10. Hey,Katydid,
I miss Joan too. She’s such an enthusiastic woman! HGTV, I LOVE everything about the home! The dark hardwood floors, white trim, and vibrant colors! My husband would LOVE having a boat in this setting! Our sons, daughter-in-law, and grandkids would probably move in with us…What fun! Our black-lab/shepherd mix,Buddy, would love his canine cabana! I’m wondering if there is room for a sofa-bed and computer work station in the foyer? Thanks for keeping us usdreaming,HGTV! You’re the BEST!

  11. FRIENDS, I went to see the home since I am close by. Please, please stop with the kids room on the first floor. There are two additional bedrooms on the 2nd floor. One has a day bed, which can be converted to having two twin beds and another full bedroom with a full size bed. In this floor you have 1 and 1/2 bathrooms. What else can you ask? Yes the bedroom in the first floor does not have a closet and there is a full bathroom there as well. But hey is it a gift. Simply, if you win it go running to a lawyer. If it is to much don’t accept it, or simply don’t play. There is a lot of complaining here, and that gets tiresome. Just don’t play, use your time in other areas that make you happy.

This sometimes I think is the objective of all this complaining. Pure tactics to scare the players. I will play until I turn blue, and then I will play and pray some more. May God in his wisdom see that I get this home.

    Good luck all.

  12. What catigory of Hurricane is the house designed to withstand ? ? ? When will you answer some of the questions proffered ? ? ?

Victor L Alsberge on January 30, 2008 at 9:10 pm
  13. Well I am so shocked at how many people complain about a prize that they haven’t won. Frankly I wonder why they are wasting their time and energy on trying to win. I THINK THE HOUSE IS BEAUTIFUL! ****** ALL COMPLAINERS SHOULD TAKE A HIKE AND INCREASE MY ODDS OF WINNING.
I personally raised two children alone and have NEVER had the ability to own my own home. I live in approx 64X14 space ,so hell yes I wanna win and live there. I was dx. with MS in 2005. If you are disabled you can apply for some state tax relief then do a reverse mortgage to cover Federal taxes and insurance. All I can say is it is a dream home and decorated very nicely. I just want someone to win that needs it and will appreciate it, whoever this turns out to be!!!!

    Debbie B on January 31, 2008 at 2:36 am
  14. Each year I watch all the hype and enter a number of times, but the one thing that concerns me — if I did win, I could not afford to live in the house. As of yet, not one winner lives in the house they won and that seems like a shame to me. Just once, it would be nice to have a more modest house that possibly the winner would be able to keep and afford.

Lynda on January 31, 2008 at 3:42 am
  15. For all of us who keep stressing out about this House. Just think of it as “Flipping” You get IN and Get OUT. If you decide to stay you OBVIOUSLY can afford to, for US who want to RUN, sale IMMEDIATELY. The timing has to be right on these things. Stop wandering and guessing. My advice to you is Get a Tax attorney weigh your options of how you want to sale. World Wide Web is a good way because it’s international, BUT How long can you afford to wait. Second, Real Estate Expert who KNOWS the market this isn’t just any ol’ house it’s a nationally syndicated HGTV Dream Home the offers will come flying in AND last but not least an auction. You got to get rid of this House ASAP!! It WILL work in your favor. Trust God Through HIM ALL THINGS are Possible. Can I get an AMEN?!?!?

Scheryl on January 31, 2008 at 9:56 am
  16. If I win, can I use the home as a vacation home?

    Gwen…

  17. So many people want to know why the Master is on the the third floor. 1) Better view. 2)Great exercise. 3)More privacy. If you want the kids closer to you, move them into the guest quaters,(this would be really easy). Oh yes, I would know just how to do it if I won. I would sell my present home for the taxes, bring the kids and the grandkids and just walk off into the sunset. Thanks HGTV. God Bless you all for giving us something to dream and hope for.

Elaine on January 31, 2008 at 12:25 pm
  18. Hey Anonymous on the 29th…..Do you know anything about accounting or income taxes? Top federal income tax rate is 35%, the state rate where I live is 5% – therefore 35% Plus 5% equals 40% times $2.2 million which equals $880,000 (sorry I rounded up to my approximate figure of $900,000 I stated above).

Ken on January 31, 2008 at 1:56 pm
  19. This a “Dream Home”!
    The decorating is absolutely Perfect…
I wouldn’t change one single thing.

  20. are there any faucets on the outside?

dominique on February 1, 2008 at 8:06 am
  21. I would agree that a lot of the complaining above is rediculous, but in all actuallity, some of it is very true. The average American could not afford such a home. For the next house, you should build it in a regular, normal town. The location doesn’t have to be with a perfect view of an ocean or mountain range. Most people today dream of having a nice affordable house right where they are. Not a $2,000,000 home. This way, people are able to pay the taxes and costs and not lose there dream. Have a mother help design the house too, so it is safe and child friendly. It is wonderful what you do for others, but being able to keep thier dream would be so much better! If you do this, you might even be able to build two in one year and make two families dreams come true. Home makeover has answered many prayers for so many families. These people truely deserve the blessings they recieved. Not everyone has those kind of problems, but everyone has a dream of a better, easier life and you could make that happen for two families if you cut the costs and make it affordable. I see that you haven’t answered anyones questions for some time. I hope you at least read the blogs and take it in to consideration! Thanks so much and God bless everyone!

Jennifer on February 1, 2008 at 11:55 am
  22. Those of you that keep saying enough already about the kids on the first floor either don’t have kids or your kids are grown up and you don’t remember what it’s like when they are little. I have a soon to be 7 year old, a 4 year old and twin boys who are 3 years old. You need to think about the direct entrences from outside. The ocean is right there, storms, child abductions. Sorry if you don’t like the complaining, but some parents actually care. And you are right, no one makes you enter, but maybe they will keep these comments in mind when they build the next dream house. That’s why there is a blog, so people can make comments!

Jennifer on February 1, 2008 at 12:10 pm
  23. I love the master bedroom and bath. Could you tell me the paint color and brand of paint used on the walls. Thanks

Lynn on February 2, 2008 at 11:55 am
  24. I have a question
i love the colors on the outside of the dreamhome
and all throughout the house on the online tour they give out the wall colors.
    but not on the exterior
what colors are teh blue and yellow on the house?

Megannn on February 2, 2008 at 12:58 pm
  25. I cannot believe some of the whining. If you win, be grateful, sell the house and buy something more modest where you want it. If they built two or four smaller houses half the people would gripe about its location and how they would have to move away from family. Not everyone has kids. Do what you would tell your kids to do, use some imagination. It is supposed to be a Dream House and not ordinary. Good grief HDTV can’t win with some of you.

Rob on February 2, 2008 at 1:20 pm
  26. What a great looking home in a beautiful location. I live in Ft.Lauderdale, and get to the Keys often. But I have seen some ligitimate concerns regarding this year’s Dream Home, which some bloggers seem to dismiss. I posted this elsewhere, but here may be more appropriate:

Taxes alone on a 2M home in Islamorada will run around $31,000+/yr. It seems that this year’s winner gets no cash to help with expenses? Insurance in the Keys will run even more.

Also, according to the builder’s website, this home appears to be the centerpiece in a neighborhood which is to be built around the winner’s house. This house will be flanked by 7 other houses with a shared pool. Though it looks private now, it will not be once the other houses are built.

I know anyone reading this would love to win the home, and thanks to HGTV for the opportunity. But hopefully HGTV will reconsider making the winner solely responsble for taxes an insurance, some of the highest in the country.

  28. Some good commments and suggestions I’m seeing in here. Based on the price of the home, and the fact that it looks like HGTV is not assisting with expenses, there will be a limited audience who will be able to afford the taxes, insurance, income taxes on winnings, etc. However, I don’t think selling the home will be a big issue for the winner- It’s in a gorgeous location, and will be the center-piece of 7 other homes to be built on either side. Even though the floor-plan is a bit “unusual”, 3 story houses on small lots tend to be a bit choppy by nature;that’s the price you pay for a small house footprint. Even calling it “mine” for a day would be a dream come true. The decorator has done a fantastic job of sticking to less-is-more, with an good touch of the Florida coast. They took it easy on overdoing it with wicker and kept the furniture scale and ease of mobility in keeping with the house’s room sizes, which are a bit smaller than normal. Good job HGTV!!

  30. I heard about the dream home giveaway alittle late, sorry. After reading, touring, and thinking I’ve come up with a solution for most of my concerns. First of all I was really excited about the sweepstakes, after returning to the site time and time again, and dreaming I began to get more questions then answers. I am not to fond of the whole kids downstairs, that is careless. I decided that my kids can sleep in any other room and I as the adult would forefeit the master bedroom. Hey small price to pay, the house is awesome and the kids will move on sooner then later, lol. Second, I thought how would I pay for this? I read in the rules that I would assume all financial responsibilities for taxes, etc. I come up with this, for all dreamers out there like me, that can’t afford to win this great big bill, don’t knock the under dog down and kill my dreams, pitch in some funds and help my family get through the first two years in this home. Third, hurricane season is terrible when it comes around, I know I live in Alabama close to Florida, though breath taking in veiw, and I sure in presence how secure is the home? My son was lifted up in the air and and pulled from my grasp fleeing from tornados, I chased him down and with the grace and mercies of God we were both safe. I wanted this to be a lighter comment, some are very heavy in concern and their concerns are very real and valid. On a lighter note, hey start a donation site so if the family can’t afford to stay in the home off the families income we can give them alittle boost, and maybe the average American can dream again. I would like to add that this house would be perfect for me outside of hurricane season, it is given away on my birthday and like my zodiac sign there are fish artwork all around the home and my sign is pieces, so when I win please help me the average american to stay in the home with my family…lol. Hey I love all of you, still dream and better yet put your hopes, dreams and aspiration in God the return is much greater and with no strings attached. Love you all again bye now……. ; )

Dorine on February 3, 2008 at 5:16 pm
  31. Hey, after thinking this thing through very carefully I came up with a idea, and, it would work if we all did our part as fellow american and looked out for one another. Now if there is about 7 million enteries and we all give one or three dollars to the average american family to live in the dream home and then we would not only be making a huge statement on behalf of our great country, but can you see the neighbors faces to see the average joe in the that neighborhood wow would the market value drop, any who just a thought, I would put my money where my mouth is and if the family is a average american family I will donate three dollars to start you off in the right direction…Action speaks louder then words, still dream, love you all m-u-a-h, see I keep coming up with solutions..love again

Dorine on February 3, 2008 at 9:02 pm
  32. I was wondering about the cable receptacle placement and if the home would be “networked” with a local area network wall plug system throughout the home.
Will there be any special electrical wiring for the dog house or the garage? Will there be electrical outlets on the exterior of the home?

Bruce Vautherot on February 4, 2008 at 7:07 am
  33. Bring on the Sunshine!!!! The Karma is their , the time is right watch out here we come! AWESOME JOB HGTV. Uncle Sam , and the insurance bandits , will have to take us on.Let it be.

David on February 4, 2008 at 9:01 am
  34. From the looks of it, yes, this is a dream home along with a great SUV Hybrid. It would be so awesome to win, so my husband and I enter the contest daily. I think to myself there has to be away around paying taxes on a 2.2 million gift. It just can’t be true that only the rich will benefit from this awesome gift. How does the average american pay the taxes? I highly suggest the next HGTV dream home giveaway pay the tax. The percentage of people entering this contest who can afford the tax is probably only 0%. It seems outrageous.

  35. HGTV has provided a very thorough and detailed explanation regarding taxes on the Dream House (DH) , and options for Dream House Winners (DHWs).

  41. While I love South Florida, and am glad HGTV finally picked a location I would like to live in, I think this home is not something I would consider my dream home. First, it is located next to a busy public park with public beach access, and there will be 8 or 9 houses on a lot that used to have only one. The view is not going to be what is shown today. The taxes and insurance and HOA costs will be enormous, I know, because I already own a house in South Florida. To me, HGTV got in bed with a cheesy developer and this house is not a dream home. For example, the dog house is just sitting in the flower bed, because there is no yard and there would be no place to actually keep a dog. And the price is enormous. Prices are dropping 30 to 50% in South Florida, and this house will be hard to sell, so the winner will not be able to turn it around quickly before being stuck with the taxes, estimated by others at 1.2 million. Houses in this price range take years to sell now, and this house just isn’t desirable. I rather have one of the small houses on the street where this lot is located than this house. HGTV has lost its focus, as one poster said. Build a real dream house that someone could actually live in. I entered once, and then decided I didn’t want to win this house.

  42. Dream Home 2008 is fantastic and just what two baby-boomers like me and my husband need and would LOVE to use as our retirement and vacation home. Living in upstate New York means nasty, cold, icy, rainy, snowy weather–and that’s just been the last 24 hours. We’re celebrating our fortieth wedding anniversary this June. We’d love to open a bottle of champagne in the Florida Keys.

Marilyn on February 6, 2008 at 12:53 am
  43. It’s a lovely home and I hate to complain, but why does it always seem non-family friendly? The childrens bedroom on the ground floor with the master bedroom two floors away? If I remember correctly, the previos homes had similar layouts with master bedroom far removed. I think the ultimate dream home would have 4 bedrooms (convert one into an office if the 4th bedroom not needed). Just a suggestion for future homes. :)

Tess on February 6, 2008 at 8:05 am
  44. For all of you actually believe that the rich don’t pay taxes, just win this house. You’ll be amazed at how many deductions you lose. Now it will be your turn to pay your “fair” share. I still think the only way that most of us could afford to keep it would be to rent it out for much of the year and use it as a vacation home and a retirement asset.

Rob on February 6, 2008 at 11:36 am
  45. Thank you carldcovington@yahoo.com for posting the tax information. I feel much better about the contest now, because even if the winner has to sell the home immediately, he/she will still benefit greatly.

  49. When I last went to Key West I noticed that much of the trip had a sewage smell that at times was very bad. Almost as if there are issues there with where their sewage goes. The land there is not that wide and surely the pipes cannot go very deep without hitting water.

Is there open sewage problems in that area along with a bad smell? The beauty of the house is one thing but a horrible smell and health issues are another.
