Questions About the Master Bedroom

Hello, happy Friday! I got in touch with designer Monica Pedersen to answer a couple of questions about the fabrics used in the master bedroom of the HGTV Dream Home.

Can you identify the manufacturer of the aqua blue buffalo check fabric used in the Master Bedroom?
-Linda

I would like to find the curtains and bedspread in the master bedroom. Can you please tell me the pattern and where to purchase.
-Mary

According to Monica, “the draperies and bedding were custom made by Ethan Allen, and the fabric can be found through Ethan Allen as well. The buffalo-checked drapery fabric is Thomas Mineral Blue. The creamy duvet cover is made with a fabric called Oyster Raffia. The accent pillows and coverlet that was folded at the end of the bed is a fabric called Talmadge Blue. I am flattered that people are interested!”

Can you send me a copy of the rules and requirements?
-Russell

Here’s the link to the rules for the 2008 HGTV Dream Home giveaway. You may also get a copy of the rules by writing to:
HGTV Dream Home Giveaway – Rules Request
PO Box 52612
Knoxville, TN 37950

And for all those asking about the amount of taxes that may be associated with winning this HGTV Dream Home grand prize, we recommend that you consult legal counsel for advice based on the approximate retail value of the prize, which is listed in the 2008 HGTV Dream Home Official Rules.

Remember you can enter once a day until Feb. 19 for a chance to win the HGTV Dream Home in the Florida Keys.

Also, I’m still seeing some comments about having problems with entering the sweepstakes again by just filling in the e-mail address. Just remember to have your cookies enabled on your browser. And if the security threshold on your computer is set too high, it will essentially disable cookies.

Also, you have to use the same computer. If you entered on your work computer one day, and entered from your home computer another day, the home computer is not going to fill out the form with just your e-mail address.

And make sure you don’t have a space at the end of your e-mail address when entering again. Even though you can’t see the space the computer does, and it will not recognize the e-mail address. Finally, make sure you enter your e-mail address in the first “E-mail Address” field, not the “Confirm E-mail Address” box, and click out of the box when you’re finished.

  1. This house is truly my dream house!!! I am a beach girl and i grew up in Florida so this would be perfect for me. Oh by the way the toilet in the master bathroom can be viewed in the slideshow of the master bath. The layout is fine, if you have ever rented a house in the keys you would know that alot of master bedrooms are the whole top floor. People should appreciate the house and not complain about it. Dont enter it if you want to complain, because i want to win it!! lol

  2. Beautiful Home, Location and decoration. I wish could win …but in the other hand… where with my simple yearly income of $45,000.00 I will find the money to afford and pay for: Real estate transfer taxes, deed recording charges and closing costs, as will all current and future real estate taxes and all other taxes, costs, fees, and expenses related to the maintenance of the house, Title insurance and homeowner’s hazard and liability insurance.??? The 75 % of the working class might not be capable to afford it.

  3. Ohhhh, people please!!!! There are so many concerns about taxes if you win the dream home. In the beginning I was really concerned about the taxes and insurance but where there is will there is a way! There are many alternatives
(1)if you are really concerned about the taxes and insurance don’t enter
(2)If you are concerned about neighbors, stay where you are or build your own dream home in the middle of a jungle, because no matter where you go these days you have no privacy anyways!!
(3)If you don’t like the layout of the home then don’t look at it
(4)You have the chance to win a beautiful home and a GMC Hybrid which is worth quite a bit of money sell the GMC to help pay the taxes on the home, until you are able to sell the home.
I realize that some people are just wanting to help out and inform others of what they are getting themselves into, however I am sure they have read all the rules and if they didn’t that is their own fault. I believe it is everyone’s dream to live in a home like this. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity and whoever wins will be a very fortunate person, a person that can live the life that most of us only dream about. That is why this is called the HGTV Dream Home Giveaway! Have a nice day!!! :-)

  4. Some people have no idea how or what a dream consists. This home is beautiful, the idea of just living so close to the ocean would be a marvelous fantasy dream come true. The skeptics, realists or just plain miserable don’t try to win and then you’ll have nothing to worry yourself about. My four year old son reminds me daily to log on and try to win this marvelous home, I pray he never forgets how to dream or wish for something that may be a little out of reach, if you put your mind to it, anything is possible, right? Thank you HGTV for giving my family something to dream and giggle about..Sincerely Donna Esquibel

  5. I agree with Barbara – with that amount of money, 4 “dream homes” could be built – most people’s dreams/expectations are a little more realistic – and the contest could still be as exciting. (HGTV – hint for next year?) Most everyone loves luxury, being near the water – I’m all for that! But please HGTV, next time make it so that the winner can continue to stay in the house for awhile and truly make it a “happy ending”. Good luck to the winner.

  6. I toured the house on january 29, 2008 with my wife. I’m sure it’s a ‘man thing’, but what a disappointment from a craftmanship standpoint. Whoever was the construction supervisor should be ashamed! The interior walls are not square in many places, resulting in gobs of chalk needing to be used between the walls and the baseboard (just take a look at the wall directly ahead when you come out of the master bath into the bedroom). Next take a look at the last row of tiles in the kitchen to the right when looking at the pantry—starts at the top with full 1″ tiles and then goes to half tiles as it descends to compensate for the bow in the wall.
The finish carpenter who did the casing around the windows and doors gouged up the trim, and has uneven margins at the top of many doors—really amatuerish. Lastly, the painter must have used a broom in some places given the uneven finish and sloppy edges.

Yikes! I’d hate to know what defects are hidden from view.

  7. I think you might be missing the point. This is a gift, not something you earned, deserve, or acquired by birth right. It is a gift from God (the HGTV universe )to be respected, cherished, loved and lived in. I know, that I have my chair in the sand and my toes can feel the heat of the white sand. The water is a heavenly bath as beautiful as Cancun, or Costa Rico. The sky is full of stars of joy, peace, happiness and hope. It is also a wonderful place where one can jump over to the islands and serve the poorest of the poor. I have seen a wonderful idea for the front lawn. I would build a chess and/or checker board slab with two foot tall playing characters; so, the grandchildren and parents can play and learn the game of life with fun. The tile would be a sage green and a black tiled structure, environmentally friendly and surrounded by a hibiscus hedge two foot tall and kept trimmed with an enter and exit opening on all four sides. There is a beautiful example already built at Bay Harbor in Northern Michigan at the Bay Harbor Hotel. It offered so much excitement to watch the joy of families learning and interacting together.
I personally spent 28 years in Nursing and the last six years, since my husband died, designing, tiling, and faux painting for friends, family, church and clients. Designing, demolishion, choosing products, coordinating sub contractors, construction, accessorizing and giving people a dream is as awesome as give people the hope of a cure or another day that they escaped death.

I don’t believe that anyone should look at this as a get rich scheme, it is a labor of love by real people, to be respected and cherished. Just go buy a lotto ticket and enjoy your desire for money. Money is sweet but great craftsmanship’s is a true dream come true.

Thank you HGTV for the opportunity to dream, share and give thanks to the BIG GUY.

  8. I appreciated reading everyone’s comments about the dreamhouse, both good and bad. There were some very good points made about features, affordability, etc. Things I didn’t know about or realize. So, it is good to hear it all, and remember guys – everyone has a right to their opinion, whether you are being realistic or naive. So keep on telling it like you see it people.

  9. Thanks HGTV what a perfect DREAM HOME, I have been dreaming of returning home to Florida after being displaced in Texas, New Jersey,Colorado and now back in Texas. Have you been in my mind? How perfect this home is for someone who truly appreciates the island life. Congratulations on a job well done, looking forward to having all my dolphin collection back where it belongs in a home I could only dream of.

  10. I read some of you saying you would like to win a home just not this big and this expensive. I say dream big!!! A dream is something spectacular, enormous, gigantic, something so big that you can only dream about. God would not give this dream home to me without giving me the finances to pay the taxes on it.

Kristi on February 5, 2008 at 10:24 am
  11. It’s called a “dream home,” folks. Not “an affordable house just like the one you could buy for a song, right down the street.” I, for one, love the magnificent, beautifully decorated homes that I truly have spent hours dreaming of owning. Taxes? You’re worried about taxes when your odds are one in several million of winning the thing? I was disappointed in the Colorado house — it seemed too small, too mundane, and not the stuff of dreams.
Believe me, people are buying products they see in these homes (even the fabrics), and they are investigating buying property at the sites of the houses. HGTV, ignore the whiners who want to rob us of our daydreams. Keep building bigger and more amazing homes for us to study and remember and be inspired by. Keep them DREAM homes. If others want small, “reasonable” homes, let them go to open houses at housing developments near them.

  12. I have a question about the master bedroom and bath. Who manufactures the wall color and what is the color? Thanks.

Pam on February 5, 2008 at 3:44 pm
  13. What a beautiful home! It is truley a dream home, I would pack up my family from VA and move in a heart beat! or if I couldnt afford to live in it year round you could always rent it out for a couple of weeks for a nice profit that would pay your taxes and upkeep and make it more affordable to come stay in several times a year that in its self would be a dream. I dont think its a house to be lived in year round but a vacation home. the kids bed rooms being on the main level freaked me out since my kids are 4 and 1 but I would just put them together in the guest room until they were older and then make sure I had one heck of a security system in place but ofcourse the house is to die for, heck I would have just taken the strip of grass with the beach at the end of it and pitched a tent! good luck everyone!

  16. I didn’t notice a commode in the master bath. Did I miss it on the tour, was it an oversight, or did they think one in the powder room on the second floor was sufficient?
And don’t plan on affording hurricane and flood insurance.
The house and decor are lovely but I could put it on our property in North Carolina, an hour from the coast, and be perfectly content.

  18. Thank You, HGTV for building my dream home I Greatly appriciate it. After I move in, lets say 2 or 3 weeks later, lets have a party for all those involved, in the making of the Dream Home 2008, my treat.

    Rita T. on February 11, 2008 at 1:46 pm
  20. I’d venture a guess that the insurance and the taxes would run between $50-75,000 a year. And pray there aren’t any hurricanes. And it looks like there would be HOA fees too.
Would love to win–but would have to sell before the DREAM became a NIGHTMARE.

  27. The HGTV Dream House is beautiful. Location, design, colors, and possibilities.Difficult to understand why people would take the time to issue concerns and send negative energy. Not interested? Do not enter – it is that simple.
Great job HGTV – with this home and your entire site!
Thanks so much for the chance to dream….

  28. HGTV you are truly wonderful. I love the channel, and everything to do with HGTV. As a grandmother raising 4 grandkids in a 3
bedroom/1 bath home, I have wanted to build a second bathroom (cannot afford at this time). I dream about all the wonderful bathrooms you have on your programs and website. I have begun collecting seashell decorations for my “getaway bathroom” so, when I saw the dreamhome, I fell in love.
All my family did. My grandson(6-who will have open heart surgery in June) calls it “our house”, and wanted to know when we were going to move in!! Kids are such a joy.
Anyway, thanks for the dream. I spent many hours going through the home, loving it, and even getting some “time away” time for me.

  35. I agree with Susan’s comment on 2/3 @ 7:20 pm. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. It’s an opinion–you don’t have to agree with it. And it seems like any negativity is given over the top objection. Lighten up people–they are just thoughts people are sharing, which would be the point of having a comments section.

I think the homes, especially this one, are becoming too “theme-y”. How many shell, coral, or fish items can you possibly pack into one home? When the real stuff is right outside your door, why do you have to be knocked over the head with likenesses inside? Cut back on the theme stuff and you might be able to install a much needed outdoor kitchen and screened porch.

And I agree with the comments on the kid’s room. I don’t have children but even I know that you’d never put children in a room on the first floor with a door that opens to the outside.

Vacation home or primary residence–the layout could have been much better and more functional.
