Questions About the Master Bedroom
Hello, happy Friday! I got in touch with designer Monica Pedersen to answer a couple of questions about the fabrics used in the master bedroom of the HGTV Dream Home.
Can you identify the manufacturer of the aqua blue buffalo check fabric used in the Master Bedroom?
-Linda
I would like to find the curtains and bedspread in the master bedroom. Can you please tell me the pattern and where to purchase.
-Mary
According to Monica, “the draperies and bedding were custom made by Ethan Allen, and the fabric can be found through Ethan Allen as well. The buffalo-checked drapery fabric is Thomas Mineral Blue. The creamy duvet cover is made with a fabric called Oyster Raffia. The accent pillows and coverlet that was folded at the end of the bed is a fabric called Talmadge Blue. I am flattered that people are interested!”
Can you send me a copy of the rules and requirements?
-Russell
Here’s the link to the rules for the 2008 HGTV Dream Home giveaway. You may also get a copy of the rules by writing to:

And for all those asking about the amount of taxes that may be associated with winning this HGTV Dream Home grand prize, we recommend that you consult legal counsel for advice based on the approximate retail value of the prize, which is listed in the 2008 HGTV Dream Home Official Rules.
Remember you can enter once a day until Feb. 19 for a chance to win the HGTV Dream Home in the Florida Keys.
Also, I’m still seeing some comments about having problems with entering the sweepstakes again by just filling in the e-mail address. Just remember to have your cookies enabled on your browser. And if the security threshold on your computer is set too high, it will essentially disable cookies.
Also, you have to use the same computer. If you entered on your work computer one day, and entered from your home computer another day, the home computer is not going to fill out the form with just your e-mail address.
And make sure you don’t have a space at the end of your e-mail address when entering again. Even though you can’t see the space the computer does, and it will not recognize the e-mail address. Finally, make sure you enter your e-mail address in the first “E-mail Address” field, not the “Confirm E-mail Address” box, and click out of the box when you’re finished.

We live up north and it’s been soooo cold. I love
the house and surrounding land and of course the
ocean. My husband is retiring in early 2009 and
we have been discussing moving to the Florida area. We have been to the Florida Keys and really
did enjoy our visit. Our children would visit us
often and the house would certainly work great. I have never really won any contest I have ever
entered, but there’s always a first time. This
could be my lucky year. I think your houses are
wonderful. It’s a really great thing you do.
When I looked at the Islamorada site for the DM, I wondered if this is the first of the eight houses to be built in this collection of homes? Are there to be homes built on either sides of the DM, where you see the dirt on both sides of the house. Also, is there to be swimming pool directly in front of the DM, before you get to the beach. Are the other homes as close to the DM as they seem to be on the Islamorada site page? The way the pictures of the DM look, it looks like it goes directly to the beach and it is kind of set off by itself, but, then the other site doesn’t show this the way it will be. Also, is there not a closet in the kids room? I think this is a beautiful home, but, the way it is being shown is kind of deceptive.
I love the dream home, and it is such a disappointment to know I could never afford to keep it becuase of real estate taxes, insurance, HOA fees, and income taxes. Living on a beach is my dream, and I like many features of the house. There’s nothing wrong with it that a little paint and rearranging can’t fix.
Please HGTV provide dreams that ordinary people can hang on to. A $500,000-$700,000 home can have windows, countertops, floors, and furniture like this year’s dream home, and be stunning but not over the top. The land is primarily what increases the price of this house. And the owner of the house doesn’t own the land on which it sits, I’ll bet. The house anywhere else would cost 1/2 as much.
More than 1/2 the money made on the sale of this house is going to eaten up in all kinds of taxes, and if it doesn’t sell before April 15, 2009, financial disaster could result. Most of us can’t afford a mortgage of $800,000 for the taxes, even if we arranged one. One has to be realistic when looking at this situation. Telling the truth is not showing a lack of appreciation–a winner needs to be informed!
The person who comes out ahead in this contest is the developer, because he gets all the advertizing to sell the other 6 houses. There are very few people who can afford any of those, which are twice the size of the HGTV dream home and way too close together. Obviously, the land was very expensive, and he has to increase the profit margin. It’s worse than most timeshares, just with separate large condos very close together. That said, I would live there, if I were a millionaire and couldn’t afford my own estate on 2 acres of land!
It is nice to think about winning and living in such a house. Even with all the disadvantages, I appreciate the opportunity to dream about about it! So thanks, HGTV, for providing us a couple months of Nirvana every winter.
One does not look at a gifted horses teeth, neither does one look at a gifted house design. If you win it, take it and thank your lucky stars. If you can’t afford the tax I am sure it will fetch a good price, being the hdtv dream home and all. If you want to keep it and don’t like the setup, change it, make that room the guest bedroom and the guest bedroom the kids room. The only thing I don’t like is that its right next to a public park, but I love that it will also have a dock as part of the whole development thing…or I hope that will be included. I also hope some younger people will win it.
Dear HGTV,
Monica,Linda, and Jack have done a superb job of decorating the Dream House! I have always wanted a home with dark hardwood floors, white trim, and vibrant colors on the walls! Oh yes, This IS my Dream Home! MANY THANKS TO HGTV!
Hello HGTV people, fans and sad sacks,
I just wanted to say that this home is gorgeous. People that are complaining about where the “kids room” is in comparison to the “Master”, nothing says you can’t change it and re-arrange to your liking. I LOVE it the way it is as my youngest child is now 18 y/o. I also have a new 3 month old puppy for the “Doggy Dream House” and I am sure he will love it too. Thank you HGTV for all you do.
This home is great! I think the DH purpose is to make a home that is fitting to the area. HGTV does a great job every year. I anticipate the diversity of the homes. I can’t wait to see the ideas for next year. The designer/decorator is amazing! She is so talented.
Keep it up HGTV!
The master suite is beautiful and looks very relaxing. Joan has always been wonderful on Dream Home and I always hoped she would supprise me! Monica, you are doing a great job this year!
It is a great house in the tropics, but not without its problems.
I do love the house, but I am wondering why there seems to be no closet in the Kids’ room and a really tiny one in the guestroom. It seems to have been designed for a couple, with visitors. As well, the outdoor shower should be enclosed for privacy, and I didn’t see a grill – something I would think to be required in the keys. The gingham drapery in the master bedroon doesn’t fit an expensive home, either. I would take the house no matter what, but some things don’t make sense. Why is there no bathroom on the first floor, and why are there no details on the laundry equipment/nor pictures, yet there are pictures of many bottles of laundry supplies? The entertainment room and kids’ room kind of require a bathroom, so why is it missing? I imagine myself moving in and wanting to make additions to the home!
The house is trully a dream! I dream off winning it every night… please stop complaining about the kids room and.. just move the children furniture to the second level! Thanks HGTV for such a wonderful dream.
Could you please tell me the paint color/brand for the master bedroom? Thank you, it’s a beautiful home, another great job HGTV!
We are a small family of 3, my husband and I and our teenage daughter. This house would be perferct! My husband’s daughter lives in Florida and this would make it easier for him to be more involved in her life. At the same time, there is plenty of room for my big family in Colorado to visit! I love the colors! The foyer is may favorite. Thanks HGTV, it is fun to dream!
hi, hgtv, ive already started with my tan. this home will be mine, a womans home is her glory, and GLORY GLORY, How can a person not be as happy as a child on christmas winning this home, hey listen, if GOD BRINGS YOU TO IT ,, HE WILL SEE YOU THROUGH IT. my cup runnith over. susan
I look forward to watching your videos and checking back to see how the houses comes together each year. It is amazing to me to see how you put together a totally unique home full of it’s own personality. This program gives everyone time to dream and imagine what it would be like to live in each home. Thank you HGTV Dream House for sharing with us.
You said it, Susan. Thanks HGTV for this wonderful dream home you have built. It warms my heart in cold NY everyday I look at it! I am dreaming of the Keys………………….;)
I think the home is awesome despite what others may say or think. Anyway, I do have a question…Is there any additional stipulations as far as keeping the home after winning? Obviously many people would be unable to afford property tax, etc on a home with that value. So, if a person can’t afford it and decides to sell it, is this allowed?
Absolutely gorgeous – certainly dreamy. i hope all the negative comments are being ignored. I think many of the viewers are missing the point. So there will be six other houses built, and there will be a pool for the development (go back to ooint of six other houses, not 30 but 6 – how busy could the pool ever be?)And this does not easily fit into a regular working 9-5 lifestyle, If it was, it really wouldn’t be a Dream House anymore, it would just be a really nice house. I love to see the comments where the viewers have already used it as the inspiration for their own decorating.
The house is beautiful, the location is truly superb. HGTV – thank you again for putting together a truly wonderful house for us to dream about!
This is “DreamHome” and all that it implies, if you do not like the layout or the location, or having to pay the gift tax, property tax, then do not enter. HGTV does an outstanding job of building and decorating their homes, with everything you could think of, all you have to do when you win is bring your clothes and toothbrush. I visited the Tyler, TX home and it was beautiful, and build very well. They do not scrimp on materials or details.
As far at the gift tax goes you would not have to pay until 2009, so that gives you pleanty of time to figure out your plan. From what I understand HGTV has people who help you every step of the way after you win the home. If you want to keep they help you work out a way. Don’t forget the property tax will only be on the appriasal of the home, not the car, or contents, so the tax will not be based on 2.2 million, that is the amount of the gift tax which comes out to be 49%. Which you can pay by getting a loan on the home.
The drawing is done a by a person from a company, and the information in the rules section tell you about it.
Not every home is going to appeal to everyone, that just means more chances for me.
I think the home is beautiful. We are in Minnesota and this morning it is 26 below zero with a wind chill, I would love to win this house and escape from the freezer. We would worry about the taxes etc later after we thaw out. Its fun just dreaming about the possablilty of winning.
A question about the MEDIA room (with aqua blue accents): There are two gorgeous spot light-type lamps on end tables…but where are the electrical cords? How are they powered? Are there electrical outlets in the flooring?
AND, is this house connected to sewer systems?
Thanks so much; place looks beautiful!
All the schools in the area are closed today because the temperature is -12 with a wind chill of -30. I was excited to start my day by looking at my Florida Dream Home. It doesn’t matter whether or not I’ll be able to live there or what color the paint is or where the kids’ room is located. It’s about having a reason to get out of bed on these cold, miserable winter days. Thank you for the dream HGTV!
When I saw the HGTV Dream Home I knew I had to enter. The exterior colors are my three favorite.
The interior colors are are also perfection. The floor plan is excellant and the designers did an outstanding job. I love this home right down to the coffeemaker and the fiesta wear. We traveled to the Keys last year and stopped in Islamorada. The sunsets are breathtaking. I would love to be blessed to see one from my own Dream Home.
This home is amazing! My husband and I have been working toward living in the Caribbean. However, after seeing this home we have reconsidered! We drove through Islamorada on our way to Key West this month. It is absolutely lovely. Unfortunately, we were unable to tour the home due to scheduling constraints. The Florida Keys have the feel of the Caribbean, with the convenience of living mainland US. We could definitely live in this breathtaking home! We’ve been in love with it since the home initially aired on TV. We enter daily and cross our fingers a lot!
what a awesome house! my husband would be on cloud nine we are a family of three but only two would enjoy the house i would be a fishing widow! the house is worth every penny and the planned development would definately be a plus to add social development to the community..it can get lonely in the keys…especially for us girls with the bountiful fishing and what a great location just close enoght to miami and key west!! my husband is there now (fishing of course) we live in ga and have tons of family in fla…hurricane insurance is high but you have to have it and im sure this house would be a great rental …my husbad is working at a resort upscale in marathon for the week and ppl will pay to play!! if i were with him i would be coming by to tour just gorgeous w/o being over the top..what awesome outdoor living in the afternoon to have a cocktail…who needs tvs!!event though the house has several…
Thanks HGTV! What a Dream!
What a beautifull dream ! Thanks HGTV ! To the people that complained about the baths and closets for the first floor, please look at the floor plans, the house have one full bathroom right in fron of the kids room and a 1/2 bath next to the laundry room, and too many closeths to count, take time and check everithing out before postin your question, seems like every body is asking the same questions over and over. Keep on dreaming. HGTV Thanks again!
Bloggers: Stop asking questions about the hurricane protection and watch the videos! Especially the video ‘Coastal Homes.’
Love the house.
where is the toilet in the Master bath , How is the room on the second floor a laundry room I don’t see a washer & dryer ?
This is not only my DREAM HOUSE but a Dream little community to retire to as well!!!! I believe this location and the concept of the communnity living out shines any other HGTV home to date……..I can’t wait to spend my vacations there and have my 4 year old daughter grow up in this paradise!!! I’m booking my airline tickets from cold NY to my new DREAM HOME.
Thank you all for your wonderful designs and for finding my family such a JEM!
My “master bedroom” is a third of that.
Great job on the home!!
The dream vacation home is a beautiful study of interior design. But I am not seeing it as being particulary “green” in the area of environmental sensitivity. It appears that all of the native vegetation, large trees and the like, that adorn the surrounding land areas has been totally stripped from this site. There is waaay too much bare gound showing – nothing “green” about that, particulary near a water body. I get the one car garage – that is a nod in the “green” direction. Not really sure if a coastal home is a really “green” location either – we need to be moving away from the shifting sand of near shore areas.
ELAINE: Not everything is shown on the tour or the pictures. Look at the floor plans. There is a closet just outside the “kid’s” bedroom, and a full bath just outside the door, so that is one addition you won’t have to make.
KATHY: Good post, 1-29, 11.18pm. I also believe HGTV will be very helpful to the lucky winner.
Hey, I’ll bring my own grill and ice chests from this freezing climate I am living in right now. I will store them in the Fishing Room, for my fresh caught (by somebody else) bounty of the sea before they are cleaned (by somebody else) and then I will put them on the grill for a seafood feast.
SHERRY: Good questions! What about the sewer system and the electrical outlets in the Media Room? I love all you dreamers and thank you HGTV for allowing us to dream. Sunsets, tonight!
I am an hgtv dream home junkie! I look forward to the contest every year & I try to enter every day. I look through the house many times to catch every detail and to dream about what I would do with all that furniture after the house was sold (Im also a “stuff” junkie, so Id have to keep all the “stuff” in the house). Yes, you would more than likely have to sell the house becouse of income tax or whatever catagory it falls into, but even after all that, you would have well over a million dollars in your pocket and a new vehicle. the money left would be more than enough to build quite the house where we live in the mid west. It would be life changing for whoever wins, preferrably ME!!!! ha ha
As dreamy as the Dream home is it would seem it was designed for the desingers and not real people. Most people would never put a master bed room on the third floor or buy a home designed that way. Same with the kitchen, try lugging groceries up two flights of stairs for a family of six or a retied couple and a few friends. No one wants a home where the little things like this are not planned for. Sure the house is great, yeah I’ve always dreamed of living on the beach, but honestly if I was a winner it would for sale faster than you could hand me the keys so I could go buy a function house somewhere nearby that real people could live in.
Please tell me the paint color blue and who makes it in the master bedroom. It’s beautiful!
the house is great and i would only be so lucky to win it. I love it and probably never would even dream of having a home so beautiful. Thanks HGTV for allowing me to dream and my girls
Are you saying the Gift Tax will be 49 percent of the home??? Then you are taxed 1.1 Million for this home? Or are is only 49 percent of the value taxed? There is a MONSTER difference!! It seems a little nutty to “win” something that costs you over a million bucks.
In todays market, you can buy your own designed home for 1.1 million. Why would you want a home that costs you that much, unless you are selling it before you take possession? And in the real estate market today, you ain’t selling NOTHING for close to it’s value.
I love this home. It brings a smile to my face everytime. Can someone tell me if a toilet is available in the master bedroom. I am sure it is, but can’t seem to see it on the virtual tour. Thanks HG; definitely a winner in my book!
dont be hatin my new pad SUCKAS..
WORD
I was raised in Ft Laud. and just left 10 years ago. I have been all over the Keys and adore it. Such a much slower pace of living. After the year I have had this home gave me something to dream about and look forward to even though in reality it was a far cry. But whatever helps me get through the day for now is a blessing. I would love to have my own house especially one in familar territory would great. I love this house, the car, decorating and especially being able to be by the ocean after being away from it for the past 10 years. One always takes advantage of what they got until its gone and oh how that is so true. I thought for so long I wanted to be in the mountains which I am now but there was nothing like the ocean, which I sure didnt pay as much attention to for 20 years as I would right now. Anyone would be happy to live in the Keys its a wonderful place!
no more winter storms, icy roads, white dust … aaah my dream home at last ….
There are not state income taxes in the state of Florida! That is a BRIGHT spot, dontcha’ think?
Use it as a partial vacation rental, and use it myself FREQUENTLY! Especially since I live in central Florida and would have fairly easy access! Good luck to all, but I sure as heck hope I win!
This is a beautiful dream home, and one my kids and I would love to win. However, the comments many have posted about the kids’ bedroom being on the ground floor while the master is on the third floor are very apropro. If you have teens, parents might be very happy to have as much distance as possible between them; however, as a parent of young children I would not be comfortable with the current arrangements.
I hope the designers are reading the message blogs and paying attention to this point. How about designing the next HGTV Dream Home so that different rooms can be multifunctional — including alternate bedroom possibilities? It would be fun to see a home with alternate configurations so that consumers can get ideas on how rooms can be multifunctional (which HGTV did very well for the current Dream Home entertainment room, by the way!)
Thank you hgtv for such a cool home in florida. My Q is how far is the airport and disneyland from this awsome home. So when I win it we can go play.
If you want to see the floor plans, you need to scroll down in the blog to August 31, 2007 where it says Floor Plans. When you click on that, in the first paragraph you will see a link where it says “first look”. You will be able to see the whole lay out. If allowed, I would like to turn it into a B & B downstairs and upstairs. Live on the second floor with the kitchen (so can make breakfast easily). I’m a business owner and like to look at things as an opportunity to make money. My only draw back in doing this is that it seems like the next few years are going to be riddled with construction headaches because of the building of the other units as well as the “competition” those units would have as to the B & B idea. It might be just as well to sell it right away. It’s all a matter of putting pen to paper and figuring out what works best.
(Or just go to the online tour. There are floor plans just below the large 360-degree image. Click on the floor tabs to see each level. Fc).
Just makes me very sad that I can’t have this house and have not much chance of ever having it.
I want and need it too badly.Usually goes to people who already have a nice house.Makes me sad.I really want and need it….oh well.
Pass the cheese……lol
Still cant get the site to reenter me without filling in the info each time. It is not my cookies or browser. This is the same computer I used to enter for the last two houses. This time I give up. Too much time and effort has been expended just to enter a sweepstaskes I probably wont win anyway. Thanks but I will give up entering. The house is beautiful. Anyone who wins it is a lucky person – why bitch!!!
What a great looking home in a beautiful location. I live in Ft.Lauderdale, and get to the keys often. But I have seen some ligitimate concerns regarding this year’s Dream Home, which some bloggers seem to dismiss:
Taxes alone on a 2M home in Islamorada will run around $31,000+/yr. It seems that this year’s winner gets no cash to help with expenses? Insurance in the Keys will run even more.
Also, according to the builder’s website, this home appears to be the centerpiece in a neighborhood which is to be built around the winner’s house (7 other houses.) Though it looks private now, it will not be once the other houses are built.
