What would you ask the winner?

If you could be there the moment we tell someone they’ve just won the HGTV Dream Home in the Florida Keys, what question would you ask? Add your question to the comments below, and we’ll pick the best ones. We’ll send the list along with our video producer when we surprise the winner on March 16. Then check Dream Home Central later in the week for some special videos, including one where the winner answers YOUR questions!

PS — If you haven’t noticed yet, the HGTV Green Home tour went live earlier today. It’s the eco-friendly home we built near Hilton Head, S.C. You can enter for a chance to win this one starting March 21.

  1. I don’t think the Winner has been contacted yet-so my hopes are still high. My question would be “Were you truly surprised today when we drove up your driveway and knocked on your front door– or had you given up that HGTV had already contacted a winner?” GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE AND PLEASE PEOPLE–THIS IS A SWEEPSTAKES- LUCK IS THE KEY WORD! KEEP THAT IN MIND WHEN YOU GET ON YOUR SALT BOXES!

  2. I’ve been to the Keys three times-last year to Islamarado. Saw this home and dreamed of living there. Held my breath for this drawing, hoping to spend the rest of my days fishing that beach or sitting on that balcony. Enjoy !

  3. I’d ask the winner: What was it about this house that inspired you to registered to win.

Ruth Breining on March 14, 2008 at 2:34 pm
  4. The winner must be already notified! Is it any of the bloggers? If you look at the other videos of the winners before, it looks like they were told a couple of days or a week before the public watched the special! Did a blogger win? Come on, let's have it!

  7. I would be crying the whole time because I am very emotional, not only because I lost, but I cry for happiness that others recieve as well. I would be curious to know the depth of how this changed there life. It would feel like a one time miracle to me. Good Luck USA. Congradulations Winner!

  8. I would ask:
If you decide to sell the house, will you be donating money to charity – or keeping it all to yourself?

  9. I AM SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HAPPY, I THOUGH I’D NEVER WIN.
I’VE BEEN ENTERING EVERY YEAR, BUT THIS IS THE ONE I LIKE BEST.
I’LL BET OUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS WILL VISIT US, NOW.

Sylvia Tompkins on March 14, 2008 at 8:27 pm
  10. I’m personally shocked at how many have even blogged this site. Many people have seen this house every single day online. They feel like it is already theirs. And it definitely should be. Unfortunately, as you are winning many will be very upset to see you win, either because they feel upset they didn’t win or that you (whoever you are) don’t deserve it. Please when you do win, first be thankful, but don’t forget the other millions who entered. Tell the people why you feel you deserve this. It might help millions others not be green with envy. Congratulations.

  11. I’m agreeing with Rosa 100%…”Felicidades. It is a home in paradise, enjoy it.” My question would be..what is the first call? To your boss to quit your job? Or, to your family and friends to pack their bags? Wow,what a celebration that would be!!! I’ll be calling one on the land line and the others on the cell!

  12. Congrats!

?1) If you could only keep 1 momento from the Dream House, what would it be? And why?

?2) Would you change anything, decor, spacing, different purpose for room, etc., in the Dream House? Is so, what & why?

?3) What is your favorite room in the Dream House and why?

    Blessings! And Congrats again! ;-)

  13. With the gift tax on a 2.2 million dollar house being in the ballpark of 50% of the value of the house, how will you pay or what will you do to come up with the $$$?

John Bilotta on March 14, 2008 at 10:35 pm
  14. What have you done to change the world in your own way? It is something you can expand upon now that you are a dream home winner?

  15. What advice would you give to the viewers that never entered the Dream Home contest, just because they figured there was no way possible for them to win

Alice on March 14, 2008 at 11:47 pm
  16. There really is a God….and yes, dreams do come to true. I hope that this will be a positive experience for you and your family, and you can share your dream come true with others less fortunate in one way or another. Possibly a bed and breakfast, or maybe a time share. Always believe that anything is possible and if you are the winner, enjoy it! This will be your chance to get a taste of paradise as you have never known it.

    Congratulations, Bob and Suzanne.

  17. Sylvia Tompkins- are u saying that you actually did win?
    Yay, it’s finally over! Congrats!
Please, if it’s true, when you tour the house find out what’s behind that door in the master closet!

  20. Unless the person who wins the house is already very wealthy and could afford to pay the taxes, the house will be sold. Weren’t all the others?

But how easy would it be to sell, I mean, doesn’t EVERYONE already want it.

SB on March 15, 2008 at 9:05 am
  21. “Now do you believe in magic/fate/good luck?” At what point in time did you know you were the winner and how were you contacted–was it March 16 LIVE as planned?

I’m 62 years old and in my entire life I never had a real vacation because I worked all my life. It would be wonderful if I win a ticket to this beautiful house and the winner will let my family stay for a week vacation for free. WOW! this would be a wonderful feeling!

  27. Why not ask them if they blog? Do they plan on entering the GreenHome contest; in august, how old they are ,if they`re able to retire,do you really plan on keeping the home which is redundant who could answer that, you`ll be in shock. Did you ever think it would happen?FCOLE how often can you win is there a time frame?

  29. Congratulations, I know there were millions of other people that entered this contest, including me! I bet you are so excited. If I was there, I would ask you,”How many times did you enter this contest”. I would also tell you,”Enjoy this house, believe me, this is the next best thing after winning the lottery”. If I were the winner I would say,”Excuse me for one moment,” walk away for a minute to a quite place and then,”AAHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAA!!!!!”

Elaina on March 15, 2008 at 7:33 pm

  33. I am so happy for you and your family. This is such a lovely home. Even though I live in Arkansas now, I grew up in Florida, it is a very special place. My extended family signs up for HGTV Dream Home every year. If one of us wins, we all agree to invite each other to visit. So we would like to hear all about your family and who will enjoy this lovely “Dream” home with you!

  36. Are you prepared to pay for winner taxes, land taxes, insurance (hurricane insurance can be very expensive, and absentee owners are prone to vandalism and theft) and evacuation routes based on location? If you sell, do you realize that the amount you finally end up with is worth the expenditure. Are you prepared to take time off from work to administer the property, including the cost of transportation over the course of ownership? Initially the winnings are wonderful, but after the glow is over, are you prepared to take the aftermath?

Courtney Williams on March 16, 2008 at 12:46 pm
  39. Do you really deserve this home ? There are so many people out there who are renting and have bad credit that will never have the opportunity to buy a home like myself. My credit score is
-700. Do you already own a home? Are you generous enough to pass the home on to another poverished family, or homeless family.

  42. If you already have a comfortable home right now, would you sell your home and make a new life in FLORIDA? I, personally, would sell the home and enjoy this wonderful opportunity that God had presented to us.

Silvia on March 16, 2008 at 4:08 pm
  43. I would ask the winner if they are going to “pay it forward”., and how they would. If I were so lucky to win, I would try to do some nice things for other people anonomously.

Nancy on March 16, 2008 at 6:06 pm
  46. What’s for dinner, honey?

Anonymous on March 16, 2008 at 6:54 pm
  47. 1) How did you enter the contest?

I suspect that there is a catch to winning, e.g., that online entries are not counted.

    2) How many times did you enter?

I suspect that multiple entries are not counted, so entering every day does not increase your odds of winning.

    3) Were you asked any questions before you were confirmed as the winner?

I suspect the drawing is not random, and that the winner must meet certain standards. They wouldn’t want the bad PR of a winner who was repulsive or controversial in any way.

    4) When & how were you notified?

Obviously, they are not notifying the winner on live TV because then they have no control over who is it, if they are home, what they will wear/say. They need to control all that, so I am sure it is all staged & set-up well in advance.

    5) Do you realize that you can’t keep the house?

No winner has been able to afford to keep the house. The only way you could afford to keep it is if you were rich enough not to need to win it.

    6) Will you visit the house before you sell it?

I wouldn’t want to see it. It would just be depressing to walk around it & know I couldn’t afford to keep it or anything in it. I would love for the winner to cut through the bull and say, “I’m going to sell it immediately and I am not even going to look at it first. What’s the point?” It’s ridiculous to have a tour of the house, and the winner ooing and aahing over its features when everybody knows they can’t live there. It’s kind of sick, actually.

    7) What will you do with the money?

This isn’t a contest to win a house; it’s a contest to win the money that the sale of the house will net after taxes. So, the real prize is whatever the winner can buy with that money.

Rowena on March 16, 2008 at 6:58 pm
  48. Congrats! Enjoy! As Alys says “pay it forward”.
