  1. Beautiful! Pulled out some old designs I had dreamed a couple of years ago and guess what? With just a couple of minor modifications this REALLY is my dream home. My husband was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2006. He certainly deserves to live in more comfort than our current 1940 shoe box affords. Will be watching in earnest and entering asap. Thank you all for all your hard work.

  2. Andriana,
Thanks for your posting. Great info in lieu of getting up there myself. Viewed from Google Earth the lot appears to be L-shaped with the base of the L where the construction trailer is in the photos. The upright portion of the L faces west on 5th St. There appears to be a larger yard area on the other street. Is that right? It’s a big area though and may be two separate lots based on the size of other lots in the area. Does the whole property belong to the Dream House? More details please. My curiosity is climbing. Sure hope we get more photos soon.
    Sweet dreams everyone, Linda

  3. ANDRIANA: Guess I should ask you the same questions I asked Ken, as you seem to be so close to the “real thing”. Any activity going on around the detached garage? Is the garage up yet? Any sign of a covered walk-way from garage to house as one blogger suggested? Common sense tells me it’s way too early for any kind of water feature, but I’m so impatient HGTV, I’ve dreamed about living the good life in the Sonoma DH, especially on the porches. THANK YOU from me and all the other wonderful bloggers, who have such good ideas. Please listen to us.

  4. I love Sonoma. It’s the most wonderful town in the WORLD!! Everyone is so friendly. Beautiful weather, beautiful shopping, wonderful town square with plenty of activities for all. I want to move there – and I live in Napa…

  5. The concept of feasts and entertainment is so very ingrained in my lifestyle! Okay, this is my perfect house. I’ve always been a Victorian sucker, I owned a restaurant, had my honeymoon in Sonoma, and my children were Christened in Napa. To live in Sonoma, open another restaurant, be part of such a beautifully established neighborhood – AH – you’ve created a dream LIFE and based it in my dream house. Crossing my fingers!

  9. Carmel Valley Linda:
So funny our comments should appear back-to-back, both thanking Andriana and asking for more information. We both seem to be curious and impatient for more news of the DH09. All you Californians are so happy that finaly a Dream Home is being built in your state, and rightfully so. I wonder about the statements that in Sonoma “people are so friendly”. Where are they not? Maybe I shouldn’t ask. I just love that so many bloggers are DREAMERS. We have HGTV to thank for that, and I do!

  10. Dreamy home that seems to be from a bygone era, yet it’s brand new. You couldn’t help but have a welcoming sense of being “home” upon entering this great house.

  14. I am a single mom of 2 kids and alot has went on in our lives over the last 4 years, my mom lives me since 3 years ago, she has alot of health promlems, so I take care of her to, right now we have lived in a trailor park in a run down trailor for about 7 years now with only two bedrooms, We are both on a fixed income and can’t afford to do much to this place. I have always dreamed of giving my kids a bigger place to live and a better life, Living near the ocean would be a huge sanctuary for me, nothing like the ocean. My daughter has been under the states care for about a year now, trying to get her meds under control she was diagnosed with Bipolar II with self harming tendinces, she will be 13 this year and my son just turned 10. He recently lost in Dad in June of this year, A new place and a fresh start would be wonderful for us all. I just want something better for my kids and myself to. I am not sure where I register for this dream home and maybe it’s only a dream, but having this home for my kids and my mother would be the greatest blessing God could give us.

  15. Thanks for the great new photos and videos. The builders are truly constructing a well-made home that I am proud to enjoy. {;)

  16. I found an article from Sonoma online that indicated DH9 was being built on the corner of 5th and Patton. The Google photo is old so you only see the empty lot but it sure is fun to “fly” around the neighborhood and downtown.
    Happy trails, Linda

  17. There is paint on the walls! We took another peek at the house on our Sunday morning walk, and noticed the walls have been painted, the colors are a bit too vibrant for my taste, especially with three four very different colors being present on the first floor. I love the gray in the kitchen and living room, but the blue, ochre, and red in the three entry rooms is a bit much . . . . but very period. Who am I to complain about the colors of the wall in a beautiful house which is being given away. It looks as though landscaping is just starting, I’ve heard a small vineyard will be placed on the lot and to answer another bloggers question, my guess is it will go in the large area by the detached garage as it faces South and will recieve the most sun. And the construction trailer is surely sitting on an adjacent lot, the property line appears to just pass the driveway to the garage. Having grown up in this neighborhood it would be a perfect family home, I just hope whomever wins it can keep it! I’ve traveled throughout the country and Europe and no matter where we go we love comming back home to Sonoma! Good Luck everyone.

  20. I love this home it has lots of warmth, beauty and a sense of belonging. I would love to have a large kitchen like this surrounded by love ones and friends. This would be a wonderful dream home, kissed by the angeles. Love it can’t wait for more photos. Much luck to all.

  21. I love your design choice for the architecture of this home. It is just wonderful and combines so well with the community and the types of homes that exist there. I have longed so often for a home with porches, like I enjoyed as a child when we lived on the East Coast. I am pleased to see that this home has both front and back porches and it brings back a lot of memories. I of course we hope to be the winner of such well designed and beautiful home, I preview your site often to see how things are coming. This home is in a truly wonderful sight in Northern California, What a great choice. I will anxiously await but patiently watch as other photos are posted. Gail

  22. Nice house, BUT! where’s the downstairs bathroom for guests to use when they come over for dinner? What if you have a friend that can’t climb stairs? I think it was very bad planning! I’m not a designer, but I watch the show where they have three houses to make over for a family and always, always they comment on where is the downstairs bathroom. I agree, where is the downstairs bath? I won’t be entering to win, I can’t climb stairs, but absolutely LOVE Sonoma. Sorry, that’s my opinion.

  23. I have submitted 3 entries so far and have not heard a word back from anyone regarding the design of this house. Has anyone ever heard of the American Disabilities Act? What if me or someone else was to win this house? What do we do? Sleeping and bath facilities are all on the second floor. Nice house, but dumb idea with the design.

Vernon Rice on September 8, 2008 at 10:10 am
  24. Sorry VERNON, your frustration is understood. This house may not be suitable for one with certain disabilities. All of us may be unable to climb stair one day but anyone who wins might sell this home, buy one more suitable and even pocket a profit.
JOAN, the powder room that guests would use is just outside the library/office.
Personally I am thankful for the tremendous opportunity that HGTV, it’s sponsors and builders provide. To paraphrase a wise friend: Thoughts become things, choose the good ones.

  25. Your Dream Homes and locations are wonderful, however, in my opinion, I feel that your designers go too far with a “theme”. For instance last year was much too “beachie” and the year before was much too “ski lodgie”. I would much rather see class and elegance. The location shouldn’t determine the decorative style of the inside of the house. I would love to see what Candice Olson would do with one of your brand new Dream Homes!!!Now that would be the ultimate Dream Home!

Jo Ann West on September 17, 2008 at 7:47 pm
  26. Question: Will the entry address (to mail in entries in Jan) be the same as it was last year?

missy on September 18, 2008 at 11:11 am
  27. YES!!! I so agree with you Jo Ann. Candice is awesome! Linda does a good job, but she seems to lean too much towards a theme, and dramatically over does it. I think it’s time for someone else to have a chance to show their talent for a change, like Candice Olson. I love her designs, they really are devine:] Not critical, just suggesting. Please let Candice have a shot:]

  28. Yes!! I agree with you Jo ann, we need Candice Olson. Linda has decorated all of the Dream homes, give someone else a shot. Linda tends to go over board with theme decorating. Because this Dream home is in a Victorian style setting, my thought is, Linda will bring out the dollies and roses to excess. Candice on the other hand, will bring class and elegance as Jo Ann has said. I hope whoever does the decorating, won’t overdo the vineyard/wine theme. Please make it a dream home for real people, not tourists, as the past themes look more like tourist attractions. Just a thought.

  29. Why look a gift horse in the mouth? Having never lived in a professionally designed room, let alone a whole house, I will be thrilled with Linda’s inspirational ideas that often seem to be collections assembled over time. I much prefer that look over the matchy/matchy ones that I sometimes see. That shoe cupboard in DH08 by the front door was fantastic and the display case used to house dishes in the dining area was absolute understated class. I love that she repurposes native finds, a fundamental way that we can all choose to live a little greener. Thoughts become things, choose the good ones.

Carmel Valley Linda on September 24, 2008 at 12:01 pm
  30. I agree Candice would be an absolutly great pick for the interior design, but I really think whoever decorates this house will do it with the class and casual sophistication that Sonoma is famous for. I can’t wait to see it!

JoanD on September 25, 2008 at 7:27 pm
  31. I think we all agree we would all love to win and live in the dream home. And as inspiring as Linda’s ideas are, I would like to see someone else have a try at their talent. Not everyone has the same taste, I grew up in Florida and lived there several of my adult years, but we didn’t over load our house with sea shells and fish art, nor did anyone else we knew. I now live in our nation’s capital, I am very patriotic; but I don’t want a red white and blue theme for my home. Every thing in moderation, a whisper of local treasures here and there would be more desirable. Agreed, gift horses should not be stared at, but we can voice our opinions on our diversity; different stokes for different folks. I happen to like Candice style, I think Linda does a great job, would like to see someone else do their thing for a change. However, it’s not that my designer choice will make any difference as to who will design the home, clearly it will be Linda. But along with the dream of winning a dream home, one surely can dream of the type of design that would truly make it their kind of dream home. It will be a dream home no matter who the designer is, I only wish it were Candice. Just a thought:]

  36. The landscaping is just about complete, the small vineyard is set up near the garage, the lawn, flowers, and mature trees have been planted. There still appears to be no cover between the garage and the main house, however in California that’s not a big deal . . . especially with how dry Northern California has been lately. The outdoor grill has also been instlled in the back yard. I was surprised to see so much lawn installed in the front of the house, though consistant with the other Ledson lots it seems to be a bit of a waste of space . . . but who’s to complain! I also agree with a previous post the iron light fixtures on the porch are fabulous! And the kitchen is so lovely . . .a huge hooded range, tons of counter space and a beautiful shade of gray. I’m not sure when the winner is declared, but it should be in the fall, you can’t beat this time of year in the wine country, especially with this home being so close to Sebastiani, you can smell the grapes and fermentation in the morning and evening foggy air. Oh, also for anyone with kids, this home has a fabulous elementary, middle and highschool with in a safe walking distance, go dragons!

  37. Hello, to all,I was wondering the house across the street seem your average homes. But the ones behind are quite large. What are the difference in property taxes? For a property that large, what would they be a year?Could we afford to pay them?I have always wanted a house like this. But I don’t know if I could leave my Texas roots….Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks,
