Meet the HGTV Dream Home Logo Artist!
Today, Gail visits with Michael Schwab, famed illustrator and designer of the HGTV Dream Home 2009 logo. Make sure you watch to the very end. Gail’s giving you a quick peek at the fully furnished master bedroom. Pay attention and keep your eyes peeled … or you may miss the mini reveal!
Oh, and don’t forget to check back in on Monday. We’re launching yet another cool video series with Jack and Linda. Can you guess what it might be about?

Wow, love the bedroom seating area. When will be see more of the Dream Home!
Gail! What a great idea to interview Mike Schwab. I thought the logo design looked familiar. I am from a family of artists. I have always loved his work, as it has a neat woodcut-like quality. Clean, classic, timeless, with brilliant use of color. What a HUGE bonus that the DH09 winner will likely get a commissioned print of his design. Yep -this is the best DH ever! Fabulous!!
How exciting! Gail’s most recent video, her interview with illustrator icon Michael Schwab was of great interest. Does HGTV or Mr. Schwab himself anticipate selling the DH09 logo art? Or was this a one-off request by HGTV? For me, it’s an artistic blend of modernist and art deco, a style that has earned him well-deserved recognition.
As for GAIL’s mini-reveal of the DH09 Master Bedroom and Sitting Area; what a delight! I caught a quick glimpse of the dreamy four-poster draped canopy bed flanked by framed mirrors above the nite-stands before the camera focused over to that warm and inviting sitting area. Indeed, as Gail mentioned, I won’t be getting my balcony to step out on, but the combination of beautifully landscaped views within Armstrong Estates along with the scenic Sonoma countryside beyond are definitely compensation enough. After all, with those majestic 180 degree views, a comfy sofa, two woven cane backed side chairs, the soft glow of the paired side table lamps, and even it’s own chandelier to set the mood, who could ask for more (other than ensuring two sparkling crystal glasses and a bottle of fine Ledson wine are close at hand…and soft music in the background.) How divine!
Can’t wait to meet you Gail. You are such an exciting individual!
I loved this introduciton to the logo artist. Michael Schwab’s style is definitely distinctive and easily recognizable. What a great choice! And might I say I absolutely LOVED the sneak peak into the bedroom. I can’t wait to see the other furnished rooms.
A note on Michael Schwab; he did an illustration in 1998 of Ft Baker (located right on the Marin headlands, at the very foot of the Golden Gate bridge before it stretches across the Bay to the city of San Francisco.) The grand old officers’ homes of Ft Baker (along with some newly added contemporary buildings) have just recently been transformed into a stunning resort now known as The Cavallo Point Lodge. I was fortunate to spend several splendid days there during a recent driving trip to N CA (which included stopping by DH09 in Sonoma.) What a dream destination. You can just drop in for a drink at the Farley Bar and a great lunch (or dinner, better yet) in their Murray Circle restaurant. They even have an on-site cooking school. If you haven’t checked out the Lodge yet, Gail, it’s a must see. Read about Cavallo Point online, and plan to stay for a night or two when you’re in the area to visit San Francisco before continuing on to DH09 in Ledson’s Armstrong Estates. Of course, once you arrive in Sonoma, a perfect place to stay is the Ledson Hotel, right on downtown Sonoma’s historic plaza. It’s an enchanting six-room boutique Inn, and hosts the Harmony Lounge wine bar, an ideal spot to try your choice of famous Ledson wines.
And, just a quiet whisper to GAIL, thank you for speaking to my thoughts about a balcony off the Sitting Area. I have to let you know though, for historical accuracy, this is Mr. DBCoop here. No problem about the confusion.
The master bedroom is heavenly. I love it. This house is just me. Can’t wait!!!
The master is nice, but it’s not me,it’s to modern.I would have like to have seen a more Victorian furniture and decor to go with the house.I guess I knew that it would be modern a long time ago when I saw the modern patio furniture and entry light.
Absolutely love the the artwork and the sneak peek looks amazing. Thanks for the video.
I am so loving having Gail!!
I just love all these VIDEO’S!!
This has to be the smartest ideal HGTV has come up with. Thank you all so much!!
And seeing that little peek of the Master Bedroom was enough for me to KNOW this is just the BEST HOME.
Interesting interview with Michael Schwab, very informative. Enjoyed his website.
The master bedroom is quite beautiful!.
Looking forward to seeing what’s next.
The Art is beutiful and the Master looks gorgeous! But I am just wondering when the 360 degree tour is coming cause not only me but everybody who will be entering for the Dream Home is excited to see it.
Well, I guess the lucky winner will find at least one of Michael Schwab’s art work on the wall. Guess which one? Such a talented artist of what I used to call Poster Art.
COOP: Did I hear her right? Did Gail call you a she? Well, you can leave it alone or correct her, as I did, when she misunderstood my “zig-zag” question from June. Anyway, we know your suggestion about a balcony from the Master Bedroom is still a sitting area. And the M.B. is very green, and just a glimpse of the bed makes me think it is not a King size. But, remember, I have low vision. VELVET: How did you see pics of the backyard? MARIE; Love you and will pray that you win. Family is everything.
Love Michael’s work! What an awesome combo!
GAIL: everyone wants to know when will the virtual tour of the house be availabale!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I waited all day to open the Michael Schwab video to see the mini reveal of the master bedroom and boy was it worth it. (I have most success opening the videos late at night.) Congratulations, Linda, I saw just enough of the bedroom to know I love it — the perfect level of elegance. Will the Dream House winner receive an autographed print of Michael’s logo? I know they would treasure it.
wow… what a cool interview, introducing us to a great artist with a style that seems reminiscent of a time in the not-too-distant past, and then, to catch a peek at the master bedroom!!! it certainly jump-starts the dreaming!
(((Katydid))) When you go to this website there is a video. Find the one that says “Exterior and Landscaping” click on that. There are 4 short videos to watch.(you have to watch them all to see the 4th one, Titled,”Landscaping, Sonoma Style)
On that same webpage, scroll down, bottom right on page. There are 19 pictures under “Exterior and Landscaping” (If for some reason the direct link I am posting does not go through..go to hgtvpro.com and click on the Dream Home link, then the video should appear.
Enjoy!!

Thank you Katydid!!! Love you too…& if either of us win, it will be the beginning of a lifetime friendship that I look forward to!!!
Okay, now the DBCoop identity..I use to think Coop was female, but along the way, I understood Coop to be male…so, I stopped calling him Debbie & starting thinking Daniel! Either way, I love Coop’s blogs as they are full of ingenuity and verbal skills, which leads to the incongruity that has the power to evoke laughter….better known as witticism!! I think the three of us could rule the world…I don’t think the outcome would any worse!
Gail: I love your most recent video with your interview with illustrator icon Michael Schwab!! It was interesting & I believe his artistic blend of modernist and art deco is something I recognize, but never realized who the artist was!!
Also, Gail the “mini reveal” was fantastic!! I will dream of canopy beds, framed mirrors & sitting areas in my sleep tonight!! Right along side my cloud of wishful dreams will be the thoughts of the georgeous landscaped views of my lovely Sonoma with its breathtaking country scenes!!!!!
I toast this reveal with my “Waterfords” holding the more than fine wine of Mr. Ledson from the kitchen of the DH2009′s wine cooler!! Cheers Gail for another great job!! Marie Miller
Hi HGTV Team,
I am enjoying Gail’s reviews and updates. Only one thing I’m glad you took my advice to have a potential winner to grace us with their take on 2009 HGTV Home. I will be entering so here’s to all those who hope to win. Good Luck from North Carolina!!!!!!!!!1
Hi
I’ve looking at HGTV for quite a while, and although I enjoy your programmes, I would like to see step by step how to do things, I’m not too good with building things, but I love woodworking, and love to see step by step how to use power tools, and build stuff.
I do not get DIY network from my cable provider.
I think step by step programmes will be a great addition to your network.
Gail interesting video and fun field trip, thank you and I loved the surprise reveal of the master suite. Seems very relaxing! Love that green! Michael I enjoyed getting to know your art style through dream home, it’s simplistic of design, classic and very cool. Not only that very important work, show casing landmarks. Congrats…
You hit it, Marie. The D is for Dan, middle initial B, and Coop is short for Cooper. For those too young or those not in the know, you’ll have to go back to Nov 24, 1971 to catch up on the bio…just keep my current whereabouts a secret. Of course, I suppose if I win the Dream Home, I’ll have to take on a new identity, but it’s a small price to pay for a real dream come true. I hope that Marie and Katydid won’t mind hanging out and partying with me at DH09 now that they know all about this shady past. Notoriety has its advantages and its drawbacks.
Enjoy your weekend, y’all, and I’m sure my fellow bloggers are looking forward to those new videos Monday starring Jack Thomasson and Linda Woodrum..
highlighting the Dream Home interiors perhaps?
I wonder when the virtual tour will start
Gail-
I love Schwab’s work; have the Golden Gate National Park stationary and gave the Peet’s poster to my daughter’s school. Incidentally, Peet’s Coffee & Tea does some great fundraising for local groups. Is Schwab’s contribution to HGTV logo extend to the decorative artwork? Lastly, the masterbedroom decor is quite lovely. The apple green and bright white evoke a romantic freshness, ah!
Wow, the Super Fan was a brilliant idea. Gail really makes the home feel “at home.”
Thanks, Velvet 350 for the link. I watched all the videos.
Can’t wait ’til January 1!
Is it Monday yet? Forget the after-Thanksgiving shopping madness of “Black Friday”, I’ll take HGTV’s heart-stopping new series “Video Monday” with Jack and Linda anytime—coming soon to a screen near you.
Mr. D.B.Coop: Your whisper to Gail; how gallant, polite and attentive to women in a courtly way. Just love all your information and the delightful and witty way you present it.
VELVET: Thanks so much for the link—I did enjoy it so. Very generous of you.
MARIE: Re: Coop’s first name. Today I’m thinking David, but will probably change my mind tomorrow. Wonder if he’ll ever hollar Bingo if we guess the right one? Or just remain the charming man of mystery that he is. And speaking of his blogs being “full of ingenuity and skills” we could say the same for you. Cheers back to you for our on line friendship and Cheers to the Dream Home 2009 team. The wait is getting shorter. Pleasant dreams all.
I love the pictures and updates on the house. My family and I are going to be in the area–seeing family from San Jose,San Franciso,Palo Alto, Vallejo, and Santa Rosa.I would like to know if we can drive by the HGTV home,if so, can you tell us what street it is on? I love the houses you have shown in the area as well. Pictureques of time passed when our grandparents and great-grandparents were alive. A few of the houses remind me of their homes.Steve Ledson has captured the essense of this era with his beautiful Victorian style homes. I am looking forward to seeing these houses and walking down memory lane. Steve Ledson,Bruce Lee,Jack, Linda, all the builders and the crew from from HGTV did a great job. Also, while we are in Sonoma, can you recomment a good place to eat and a few place to see while we are there. We will only be in California for a week. Thank you for a great job you are doing,HGTV could not have picked a better person to represent the company in showing the house.
P.S. Micheal Schwab did a fantastic job on the HGTV DREAM HOME 2009 logo.Of course, his logos are known everywhere.
Gee, COOP, when you mentioned sky diving in to take possession of the Dream Home, I didn’t realize you had a previous practice run. You must be in your 60′s now, your brown hair turned to a beautiful silver gray and all broken limbs completely healed. Of course, Marie and I will be ecstatic to party with you. We might even ply you with Ledson wine to get you to share your adventures with us. Monday: What do J&L have in store to show us? Can’t wait. Love to all dreamers.
The master bedroom looks fabulous. I love the green it is my favorite color. I wish I could see the dream home in person but it is too far away. Please have the 360 tours soon it is so hard to wait. It never ceases to amaze me what good work everyone on the dream team does every year. It really takes a lot of talent to go from plans on paper to a decorated home.
Love the sneak peak of the master bedroom!!!! I can’t wait to start entering for my chance at a Dream Home and a Dream come true!!!!

Wow…there are not enough words to express the Master Suite. It is so very full of elegant details, but yet so naturally simple. I love the pop of green paired with the neutral tones of the furnishings…extraordinary. This house is very interesting, and unlike any that I have seen. All of the Dream Homes are wonderful, but there is just something about this particular home…I just can’t put my finger on it.
~kate~
Great job on the logo. It looks great and goes great with the house and with Sonoma itself. Keep up the great work HGTV.
