Mailing Address and More

Good afternoon, bloggers!

Happy New Year! I know how excited you all were before the HGTV Dream Home special aired, and I can only imagine how super-psyched you all must be now to enter the HGTV Dream Home 2009 Giveaway!

I told you that this house would knock your socks off. MicheleC inquired about that fantastic zinc table in the master bedroom. It is a one-of-a-kind piece; Linda found it at an antiques store in Sonoma. Marie, the willowy purple flowers are actually potato vines (they tie in beautifully with the window and patio color). There have also been many questions about the right mail-in address for the giveaway, so here it is. Mail your entries to:

HGTV Dream Home Giveaway
PO Box 53305
Knoxville, TN 37950

Make sure your entries are placed in an envelope.

I hope you all enjoyed a great holiday. My family made it through double ear infections and the flu and still managed to appreciate each other and the downtime the holidays bring.

Happy 2009 to you all!

Your Super Fan,
Gail

  1. Is there a washer and dryer in the laundry room? I didn’t see any. Thank you

  2. My only question is why did Miles use such a boys theme for the kids room? There are so many other themes and colors that would of been less gender focused. Also, if your going to put two beds for two kids you should think about how both of them would need their own study area, and not pick one large desk. Plus, in the bathroom a double sink area would be better for those busy mornings. Thats my two cents. The rest of the house is amazing and a true dream come true.

  5. I live in California and wondered if it is possible to tour the Dream Home in person? I love what I have seen on tv and the internet and would really enjoy seeing it up close and personal. My family and I would like to plan a trip to Sonoma to check it out, but wanted to make sure it was possible.

  6. Gail,

The 2009 HGTV green home is going to be amazing (I’ve already seen sketches of the layout)! It’s great to see green home design/green home plans receive such prominent attention in the media.

Also, thanks for the entry information…I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

  7. What a gorgeous home. I watched the video coverage on HGTV yesterday and enjoyed the tour. I can hardly wait to move in. My wife and I love Sonoma and have dreamed of living there someday. I do have question, is there a security system available in the house? Just curious. Tom

  9. Hey i got a question for you and its about being able to affording the house. I know and you know there are contest taxes which are pretty high and on a 2 Million dollar house it would be verry expencive to pay off i mean it would be worth every cent to live in sonama but for some its not possible and im just wondering does hgtv have a way to help the winner pay off the tax and get settled into the home and help them become finiancialy stable for the house. Because this house is really famonimanol and i would dread to see the winner have to sell the house or give it up in a fore closure or something like that.

  10. Dear Gail:

Thank you for letting me know the name of the willowy purple flowers…I would never guess that there were called potato vines!! And, you are so right…they do tie in beautifully with the window and patio color! Everything about this house has been coordinated to excellence!! I have never been so excited about anything in my life (okay, maybe the birth of my twins), as I am about this home. I hope that my DNA left at the front door lends itself to the right karma so that I actually win it. If not, I will be happy for the lucky person that does!! Sonoma is a special place with special people (including my family)!!!

Anyway, thanks again. I will be at the nursery tomorrow asking about the potatoe vines!! I love HGTV & I appreciate what you are doing to further the communications between all of the avid bloggers on this site!!

    Have a GREAT day!!

I have a question for you: what “parcel number” in Armstrong Estates, is the 2009 HGTV Dream Home?? (PS: hope this hasn’t already been asked and I missed your answer…..) THANKS!!!

  16. Hi Gail,

really appreciate all of your information about the DH. Have a question: does the house have a security system. I’m sure it does, but just wanted to make sure. Also, (I don’t know if you can answer this question or not, but can’t seem to find the answer anywhere else) do you know if the Dream Home 2008 winner or the 2008 Green Home winner, are actually living in their homes. I hope they are, as both homes are just beautiful. Anyway, have a great day and look forward to more info from you.

  17. I LOOOOOOOOOOOve this house. I want to win this house. The colors in the interior rooms are so beautiful and pose a background of serenity for the furnishings of the entire home. I know about potatoe vines. I have grown them in hanging pots with other small flowers that compliment the beautiful light green color of the cascading leaves. I wish I had this house to set up my painting studio. The light would be perfect in any of the rooms. I am visionizing myself in this home in every nook and corner, every day I take the visual digital tour It really is candy for the eyes and just think, we all have a chance to make it ours, and in spite of the taxes, the upkeep and the utility bills, I want to make this home mine. I would move there in a heartbeat. Syl

  22. I think this house is awesome and I would love to win, It would be perfect for me, I have had 1.5 years of turmoil, from being diagnosed with MS, to now in the middle of a divorce from a man who refused to put me in a healthy home. I have dreamed and hoped of having a new home that would be more condusive to my health and wellbeing. I sure hope God smiles on me and lets me win. I think you all do a great job with your projects and I love watching HGTV. It is inspiring to me, and keeps me dreaming that all things are possible.

  24. These are great questions, where do I go to read the answers? We love this home, it is beautiful…we have no money though and we worry about the property taxes for each year, and the taxes for being a winner? Could you give us an estimated idea what we would be getting into if for some reason we won? Thanks a lot! I have been entering through email each day since the 3rd of January, just in case.

Claudia Shields on January 5, 2009 at 8:55 pm
  25. I was very disappointed with Dream House 2009, there’s really nothing specail about this year’s house. I’ve seen better decor in a Pottery Barn catalog. There were only two rooms I liked, the kitchen and sitting room. I’ve entered the sweepstakes but would have to make some major changes starting with Kim Myles room if I won.

  26. Hello. Are you an official rep for HGTV ? or are you stating a personal interpretation of the rules?

The rules say : “hand printing your name, complete address, phone number (area code included) and date of birth either on a postcard or on a separate piece of paper no larger than 8½ x 11 inches, and mailing the postcard or paper in an envelope with proper postage affixed to: HGTV Dream Home”

I take that to mean that you can mail a postcard or you can mail in a separate piece of paper IN AN ENVELOPE.
Sending a postcard in an envelope doesnt make much sense.
    Can someone clarify , please?

  27. Well, I am at it again-faithfully entering every day. The last 3 years didn’t work, but hey- what’s a dream without the dreaming!

The house being in Sonoma is very special. I was born and raised only a couple hrs. drive from there and all of our beach trips centered around the Sonoma, Napa, Bodega Bay, Petaluma region.

Now that we’ve moved to the southernmost part of Arizona, I haven’t even seen A SINGLE beach in what seems like an eternity. All of my daydreams are filled with visions of the ocean & more importantly, our family being together in the sunshin (and merciless wind!). One time at Bodega my son and I dug a sand pit and huddled down in it. We wanted to go to the beach so bad we were stubborn and wouldn’t leave when the gail force winds started blasting sand in our eyes!

I still have my collections of shells, beach glass and tiny ,pebbles. In fact, one of my favorite hobbies is to make stained glass mosaic wind chimes, with seashells and other baubles dangling from beneath. We are ocean obsessed- we? oh yeah, me.

Anyway- good luck everyone, this place is AWESOME!

  28. This house is invading our thoughts! We can’t stop imagining ourselves living in it, it is really a true dream home. We especially love the front porch and the backyard patio, what amazing places to host friends and family. Well, like many, we are entering daily and still a little unsure of the rules, although we have read them a thousand times. If we enter online, can we enter with only one email address, or as many as we have (ie. home and work)? Also, can we enter both online and through the mail simultaneously? I know these rule questions are annoying, but we don’t want to invalidate our chances! Thanks for your help…it’s off to the virtual tour for one more look…we just can’t help ourselves.

  29. I find it interesting that last year the “Surprised Winner” was already in position with friends and family. This was definately a “Big Surprise” for all who were watching your show and listening for their front door bell to ring. Since the children’s room is decorated in a boy theme this year and there are three bikes in the garage, one for a boy. Are we in for another “Big Surprise?”

  30. I always enjoy your comments,Gail…but a word to the wise…potatoe vines(when planted
in the ground) are very invasive. We had to
totally rip up an outdoor deck because the potatoe vines retained so much moisture, that the deck never had a chance to dry. Also,
over at Armstrong Park(near the DH09),several
trees had to be removed due to a neighbor’s
potatoe vines smothering them. Lots of looky-
loos at the DH09 lately…I guess the special
made alot of people curious.Happy dreaming!

  37. Dear Gail,

From my understanding each entry has to be placed in its own stamped and post marked envelope and each entry has to be hand written. With my name and address and birthdate.

but what about when i mail it to HGTV. Like the TO and REturn address. can those be labels printed on a computer?

in the rules it says ” Limit one (1) entry per stamped outer envelope. Mechanically reproduced or hand-stamped entries or mailing labels or entries generated by script, macro or other automated means and entries by any means which subvert the entry process will not be accepted”

If anyone knows could you help me out? i dont want to be sending entrys in and they are no valid.

Thank you so much and good luck to everyone who is entering.

  40. What if HGTV did a contest …50 homes Giveaway (one in each state) where you could only enter to win the dream home from the state you currently reside in? I’m sure they could build homes at a smaller scale / cost for 50 people to win. A house doesn’t have to be so extravagant to be a dream home….just having a home is already a dream.

Kat on January 6, 2009 at 4:47 am
  41. I LOVE this house and all the rooms in it! My 2 kids and my husband love it too as we have taken the virtual tour as well as the tour on HGTV. After 16 cold years in Maine we would love this relocation so much! I also am a wine lover and take every opportunity when traveling to visit local wineries, although I have never been to Sonoma or Napa Valley’s. The serenity of the colors chosen and the calming themes would do this cancer survivor perfectly.

I also would like the answer to one of the questions here on the Blog, can we enter both mail and e-mail? Or is one better than the other to increase chances of winning? I have been entering my e-mail only and would love to know if this is the right way to go. Good luck everyone!!!!!!!

  45. Hey Ingrid & Bobo! Thank you for the heads up on the Potatoe Vines, however, I will be restricting them to a pot on my deck. We live in a condo, so no worry about them taking over, unless of course, they decide to jump out of the pot & seed themselves below!! I don’t think that would be so bad though, they would probably look good intertwined with the “Wild Lupin” that so gracefully fills the hill above the ocean!! In fact, maybe planting the Potatoe Vines on the hill is a great idea…it could help with the ever present eroding issues!!

Question Gail: I could have sworn there was a half bath downstairs..isn’t there one somewhere on the first floor??

  50. The Sonoma home is so beautiful. Like clockwork, the first thing I do when I log onto my computer is go the the HGTV website. You can’t win if you don’t play!! I do have one question? Are the winners determined by how much money they make or is it strictly just the luck of the draw? I’m still confused by how they draw from all of the electronic emails. Is it better to send something through the mail? Could you please answer these questions.

I love all of this home but how great is the cozy living room and the great kitchen (and the bathrooms, bedrooms, and on and on). We have not been lucky yet but maybe this is our year. The plus is this gorgeous home, its beautiful warmth and surroundings and my parents who have just moved out west which we would be closer to again. Good luck to all and continue to dream very big.

  58. Gail-
I have a question about something in the rules.
“In the event of a dispute as to the identity of the potential Grand Prize Winner based on an e-mail address, the winning entry will be declared made by the authorized account holder of the e-mail address submitted at time of entry and such individual will be required to comply with these Official Rules. “Authorized account holder” is defined as the natural person who is assigned to an e-mail address by an Internet access provider, on-line service provider, or other organization (e.g., business, educational, institution, etc.) that is responsible for assigning e-mail addresses for the domain associated with the submitted e-mail address.”
It just seems like it shoudn’t be based on email addresses-it should be based on the entrant’s name.

  62. Personally, I wouldn’t care if the house came without furniture, washer/dryer, or only had one bathroom and I wouldn’t care if the walls were painted black and telephone poles don’t bother me either – it’s a free house guys – yes, I know you have to pay the taxes but there are NO MORTGAGE PAYMENTS!! Taxes are a lot easier to pay than taxes AND a mortgage payment. I would LOVE to win this house. I am so tired of paying huge rent payments every month and having to move every time they raise the rent. I pay more on rent in a year than I would on the taxes on this house. I would be so grateful if I won this house. It would be such a huge blessing. And living in Sonoma, WOW!! Thank you HGTV for this opportunity!!!

  70. Hi, no offense but what happened this year with the grandness and location of the dream house? Its nice, but not dreamy. What’s with the old houses across the street and the small yard on a corner lot in the middle of this typical neighborhood? I admit it’s a nicer house than most of us have but definitely not the quality “dream” house of past years.

Tessah on January 6, 2009 at 4:01 pm
  71. Just did the digital tour again and I can almost smell the newness of this dream home. I hope I win it because I was just told that I would need to vacate my painting space where I now live. At my age this would be devastating. The new house has plenty of light and space for an artist to be very creative. I look forward to moving into and painting in my new dream home with some special family members. Thanks for the opportunity to submit to the sweepstakes. Sylvia Rogers (Barnes)

I love the new home in Sonoma; I look at it every day and dream! My husband and I have had a run of bad luck in the last couple of years ( he had a major stroke, and has lost sight in his right eye and use of his left arm, so he has had to recieve disability; so now we are renting a town home in Lincoln, NE.) He used to drive truck over the road years ago and said that area in CA is so beautiful. I am still a practicing LPN so most of my our financial support comes from me.All of our children are grown and have children of their own, so we have no strings attached ; it would be so great to start over somewhere else, with a wonderful new home. I dont’t mean to sound pitiful or give a bad luck story, cause I know there are far more less fortunate than us. I watch the HGTV shows all the time. All of the Dream homes have been great and if we don’t have luck this time I’ll just keep reentering and hope again. Anyway the HGTV team has done another really great job and the home is really wonderful. Another question, can you enter online and in the mail? It says to enter the next time, just to reenter your e-mail address, but each time the whole address thing comes up. thanks a lot!

  74. Hello Gail,
As usual HGTV has done it again! What a beautiful home! I noticed what looks to be a garden back behind the dog house? It looks like you could grow some grapes. Or maybe that is the neighbors property or maybe another surprise for the lucky winner.

  75. I’m so in love with this house.. I talk about this contest all day long at work. Today a co-worker mentioned the taxes and maintance to keep a 2MM must be high..you know I did not think of that. What are the arrangements offered by HGTV to the winner – hopefully ME?

  78. Remember all who think the house should be super grand and on a huge lot and overflowing with bathrooms:
    1. CA , esp. Sonoma real estate is very pricey, adding to the cost of the taxes, gift tax.etc.What people dream of might cost 3 or 4 million.
2.You have to pay for all utilities, grounds, care and up keep of the property. The Texas winners couldn’t even change their light bulbs, awesome though that home was.
    3. The era of mini mansions and over reaching is over. This is a wonderful home in a great neighborhood in a fantastic town. I would live in a smaller and outdated home to be in Sonoma.

Wake up fellow dreamers and embrace a dream you just might be able to live out! I would be in the yard all the time anyhow, sipping the Ledson, and waving at the neighbors. Even the ones in the little ranch across the street!

  79. The house looks great, just beautiful…lots of details.
Last year I was a little sad that we did not win however, my wife started packing again. My cousin is asking me to move to California for many years.I think Sonoma will be a great place for our children.
    Keeping fingers crossed…
and wishing you all, good luck…

  81. This is a response to someone on January 5, 2009 at 5:33 pm who asked about the taxes. technically if HGTV did pay the trans and rec taxes that would only add to the total value of the package. You would then have to pay federal income taxed on the 2 mil plus the value of the trans and rec taxes. (plus CA state income taxes, if CA has state income taxes. I live in MD and we have property and income taxes. most states I think have one or the other) My advice to the winner who wants to keep the home would be to take out a home equity loan to pay the trans and rec taxes and get on a payment plan with cali and the feds for income taxes. Most of the past winners have sold the home.

  83. What more could a girl want than that beautiful kitchen and dining area to have spectacular dinner parties! And to live in Sonoma…What a cinderella story! Unfortunately it will be only a dream for most of us….but we can keep wishing! I will be entering as often as I can.

  87. Fabumom07…your comments were right ON
TARGET !!! People who have never been to
Sonoma,CA. have NO idea what a dream location
and lifestyle one has living here. The year-
round weather is perfect, the people are friendly, and Sonoma is off the busy 101
corridor, so it is calm and peaceful. Even
if you can’t afford to keep this home, please
live here for one year, just to experience
the magic! Linda W. made the comment that of
ALL the Dream Homes that she has been involved with, this Sonoma home is the only
one that she would like to move into herself.
I’m lucky to live here, and I know it. I thank
my lucky star everyday. Ingrid from Sonoma

  90. Where do you go to find an answer to a post? many are asking where to find things,

as far as out side curtain rods, check Penney’s they just started to carry that product. They also have special order catalogs to order from.

I would not sell a house I won, I think they did a good job with it, and can afford the taxes. Loyal fan of HGTV where many of thier ideas I have put to good use.

Heather Ayers on January 7, 2009 at 11:19 am
  91. Hi Ingrid! Of course, I agree with you (and Fabumom07), too, but you’ve known that from our “lucky stars” posts back in November. I am surprised, too, at some of the comments, particularly about the neighborhood, the homes across the street, and some of the complaints that I am reading about the DH. We are not in Sonoma, but cherish the area as a DREAM location to call home. Take Ingrid’s advice as a local, bloggers…! Sonoma is an outrageously wonderful area.

  92. This home is AMAZING. My husband and I visited last year’s HGTV Dream Home in the Keys and was wondering when the Sonoma home would be available for walking tours. It is sooo exciting to walk through the home and just visualize yourself owning it!!

Thank YOU HGTV for boosting the dreams of your viewers. You’ve done another AMAZING job!!

  95. Hi! WOW, was just in Sonoma on the best weather weekend EVER in November! My friend and I had gone on the Grey Line Wine Tour out of S.F. and it was glorious!! To think we were right there eating on the square while YOU were decorating!! What a HOOT! It is so georgeous, and so neighbor friendly, and to actually grow grapes and have such a lucious surrounding yard! I am so amazed at all you were able to do inside AND out! Another Home Run for HGTV!!

  99. Last year we had a person who live near DH 08…Islamorada, and she spoke of the area like Ingrid (and a few of us) speaks of this DH. It too was a beautiful home, and she felt very lucky to live there in paradise.

But it was not easy for her to hear all the negative post, and we didn’t hear from her after the DH was won.

Lots of us feel that where we live is the BEST place to be, so please understand if sometimes we seem a little protective of some of the negative comments made here.

You all do have a right to your opinion.

  100. Just need clarification on something. Can spouses enter the contest online if they have different emails even if they live in the same house. For the first couple of days I entered and then my husband entered using his email. I hope this doesn’t void our entries since it is coming from the same address! Any one know the answer?

  101. I know that no one is going to give me $700,000 to pay the taxes on this house so I joined the myunclestan.com network. It seems like the best chance we have to keep the house without taking out another loan and getting further into debt.

  105. Some of my opinions about your questions. If you fill in your zip code, they will know the state. Having to fill in all info again, try this. click on the first email address and fill it in (exactly like you did the first time). Then click on the second email box….all should fill in automatically. It is my understanding you can only use one email address per computer. If you enter another email from a second computer, that is OK. The home address doesn’t matter. If I am wrong on this, will someone from HGTV please correct me so can apologize. Thanks.

  106. I absolutely love the Sonoma Dream Home! I agree..It makes no difference if there are telephone poles, nieghbors in small homes, no furniture..or worst. This place is a dream come true. Less than 1 hour from San Franciso. 45 minutes from The Culinary Institute of America. I would transfer and complete my Culinary Degree there in a heartbeat. Winecountry. A sleepy little town. Low to no crime. Friendly people and the most important thing…Nice weather. The summers are so hot in Las Vegas that I swear I once saw the devil walking down the street with his pitchfork! Ahhhhh, heaven must be like Sonoma! Dreams do come true;)

  111. Please help! I’m confuse where to send the entry by mail. When you watch HGTV Dream Home you will see another P.O. Box address where to send it and it only requires name, address and phone #. 115. To all of you who are wondering what the tax charge will be…20 to 25% on 2 million will come to: A minimum of, $400,000. In order to keep the house, you will need to take out a mortgage for that amount to pay Uncle Sam. Your monthly payment will be an approximate amount of, from $1800 to $2000 a month for 30 years depending on the interest rate charged by the bank.

    Are you discouraged? Wait…
Your property taxes will come to a minimum of, $30,000 per year.
If you were to win this house, but could not afford to keep it…sell it and with the cash, buy a less expensive house. Good luck and GOD Bless.

  119. This place is beautiful. I know that my karma is on the fritz so i have no chance of winning but to those of you who do…what is up with the crazy complaining? Who cares what the rooms look like they decorated one room a little to boysish or the guest room is girlish. After what I’ve grown up in I would be thanking someone just for the oppertunity to live a new life. My children would be blessed with something I could never be able to give them due to family issues. But if I won, your darn right I would put my whole life into making it a wonderful home. Everyone who keeps complaining about this and that remember you’re lucky to have to things. If you have to bring something with you that isn’t quite up to “standards” guess what that’s okay too cuz you will have a breutfil home. A home that you can make something for your family. You can remove everything inside that home and its just a place…what makes it a home is who is living in it and the reson youre there. My reason as greedy as it may be is for my son and me and my husband. I have nothing to say about the decore of the home or choices from rooms. A house is a house is a house and its free. People need to be thankful..

  122. Hi.I moved to northan Ca.( 65 miles to the Oregon border) from the Bay Area twenty years ago. As a child my brothers and I would visit my father at his cabin in Healdsberg Ca. near Sonoma. We would spend many days at the Russian River having fun in the sun. I have always liked that part of Ca. Such a quint town and it’s not to far from the coast, ( Point Reyes CA.) Its also where I want to continue my education at the university of Sonoma. In the past few years my fathers health has become an issue for our family even through his children are spread apart through out Ca. we came together at Thanksgiving in 2007 to share time with him and his wife Elizabeth. Wow what a wake up call for all of us, we didn’t realize his health had decline, so much. It would be a blessing to win this home for our family, so we can have a place to live and be near our father. I read a few comments from people about the home , I was a bit surprize to read the dissaticfation people have over the silliest things in a house. ( even a free home) The house is fabulous and everyone involved did a wonderful job in the homes creation, who ever receives it should feel honored and thankful to have this home. Good luck to everyone in the Dream Home give away.I also want to thank HGTV for the opportunity for a chance to win my dream home.

  135. Hi,
I’ve read your answer on the taxes for the DH and if I’m reading it correctly, you are saying that if we win it, we have to come up with $400,000 before we can move in, is that right?
You also said if we couldn’t afford it, we could sell it and buy a smaller home, right? My question is, we would still have to come up with the taxes, approx. $400,000, before we could take ownership so we would be able to sell it, is this right?
What if we don’t qualify for a mtg. of that amount to pay the taxes, what happens then?
What if we couldn’t pay mtg. payments close to $2000 a month?
I’m trying to find out if I can afford to win this beautiful home or not.
    Thanks

  142. I spend so many hours looking at this dream home. Even if I don’t win it, it has given me and my wife so many ideas on how we can change our current house just a little so it could turn into our dream home. Thanks HGTV, I look forward to all the future ideas and tips you’ll share with us.
