  1. The design of this house is awesome! I love the architectural inspirations of the past.

One question though–this house is designed for entertaining, but where are the guests supposed to go to the bathroom? There are three nicely designed bathrooms on the second floor, yet all in bedroom suites. From the floor plan, no guest-accessible bathroom or powder room is present on the first floor, second floor, or garage. Was this intentional?

  2. Hi Folks, I found the following in the log home sweepstakes blog. I was curious about the Myunclestan website and did a bit of research. I had a hard time coming up with anything solid but maybe someone else found out something I couldn’t. Anyway food for thought. Here it is:

Hi, Debbie, welcome to the blog. FYI the house indeed is free, but nothing is for nothing. The winner would have to pay taxes on the ARV of the building. If the maximum federal remains at 35% this year, NC taxes are at a max of 7.5% as of last year. So, most likely you would have to take out a mortgage just to pay the taxes on your winnings.
Either that or sell it right away as this year’s winner did. Then she ended up with whatever the cash difference was after she paid the taxes.
And please, folks, don’t let this mention of taxes start up that old MyUncleStan promotion. We’ve already analyzed that to death and determined that buying a lottery ticket to cover your tax obligations if you are the winner would be a much smarter move.

  3. OMG I love the Dream Home in Sonoma! Sonoma is the best place on earth. Met my true love there and we are so ready to move from East Coast to West Coast! The design of the home has beautiful clean lines and great use of color. The garden area…well what can I say…spectacular!!!!!!

  4. Buying a lottery ticket to cover the taxes is an interesting idea, BUT, what would the taxes be on a winning lottery ticket, and when would I have to pay them?

Hah, just pulling a leg or two here. (No need to answer, Brenda!)

  5. Hey, California Dreamers. Another day closer to someone winning the beautiful 09DH (hopefully me or at least Brendan). 4Dewdrops, if you win, I will take you up on your offer of a glass of wine. Marie Miller, I will also take everything on your menu with the exception of the fried okra. I should have known that only a southern belle would have given us such gracious words of wisdom on the Inauguration Day.
DBCoop, thanks for the additional information regarding the LLC. You are just a weath of information — I still think that you work for HGTV!

  6. Hey Brenda: No Okra? Come on, you have love it if you have spent any time in Georgia! It’s like a staple…just don’t try to boil it! Unless of course, you are making chicken gumbo..and, one should only use a small amount, otherwise your soup will slip right off your spoon! Oh, the terrible thought of over-processed Okra! Okay, I understand why so many folks say that don’t like it..I grew up with southern cooking (including Chicklins, which would run me out of the house when my mom cooked it)! So, I forgive you for not liking Okra!

  7. To 4dewdrops: I, along with Coop, Katydid, lovelykitty, Brenda and any other bloggers would love to partake in a glass of wine and a toast to everything good in this life, big and small, with you! Let’s toast that on the veranda of the home in Sonoma…I’ve experienced the weather in Georgia, and I think Sonoma is more conducive to celebration, especially with the icy winters & the sultry summers (not to mention the mosquitos the size of moths)!! I look forward to our reunion…in fact, I believe if I win the DH2009, I will call it “The Gathering Place!!”

  8. Dr. Paul: Pllllllllllllllease!! Where have you been my dear? “RTS”….read the screen, especially the episode entitled “A Look at the Powder Room!!!”

Marie Miller on January 23, 2009 at 9:13 am
  9. Dear Coop…please forgive my ignorance & blatant oversight..thank you for the explanation regarding the LLC (Limited Liability Corporation)! Nice to know that HGTV is brilliant among all the other attributes!!! I’m happy to know that if I win the Dream Home, the key will be placed in my hot little hand. Do like that fact!

  10. I HAVE NO COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE HOME. ANYONE WOULD BE BLESSED IF THEY WON THIS HOME. I JUST HAVE ONE QUESTION IF A HANDICAP PERSON WON WOULD THEY CONSIDER MAKEING IT POSSIBLE FOR THEM TO ENTER THE HOME AND TO GET OFF AND ON THE PATIO.

  11. can I get a word in on the marie miller web page????

  12. Marie Miller: Thank you for your comment about the “happy karma” that has been transferred into the DH from the happy people who conceived, built, and decorated this amazing home. After 2 tours of the DH, I have been trying to express the incredible feeling you get as soon as you step into the foyer. You are right! It is happiness – sheer pure warm welcoming gracious enveloping happiness.

Victoria on January 23, 2009 at 12:15 pm
  13. Hi Victoria: You’re welcome!! Whether or not I win this desirable home, I will have to admit, because of it, I’ve had many hours of joy just meeting and blogging about it with cyber friends!! This joy, along with the kismet caused by HGTV & Crew, makes this home blessed!!

Marie Miller on January 23, 2009 at 12:26 pm
  14. Loved the re-creation of the rooms! I am getting some great ideas from the room photos. Thanks!

  15. Hello to all Bloggers! I have to say that I have been dreaming of this dream of everyday. I think I need this in my life right now as I am losing my house to foreclosure, and I hate the idea of renting. I think this is the luck I need right now. But, when I win I will invite you all to my house to have some wine with me.

  16. Hello everyone my name is Michael and i am a resident of cleveland Ohio. I have entered the hgtv dream home because times have been rough for my family and I. This house would be a great new start for my wife my two kids and our family dog daisy. I have recently been layed off of work but the bills keep pooring in. But if I dont win i still wish the best for who ever does win, hopefully they will be able to turn this Dream House into a home. ENJOY!

  18. I would love to know where I can find the lantern style lights hanging on the front porch. They are beautiful but I haven't found any information on the manufacturer.

  19. How about having Candice Olson do some of the decorating in the 2010 dream home. She does such beautiful designing and it is always something different. Thank you.

  20. Blogger, thanks for the candor. Thanks for occupying my dream time! I’m finishing my doctorate now and have been writing all the time, meanwhile dreaming about the best possible graduation present. It’s been a little distracting, but reading along has been so much fun.

I’ve been thinking about the residents of Sonoma, wondering if they’re excited about getting a new neighbor or growing tired of all the hoopla. So, when I win… I promise, future neighbors, to be a great addition to your community.

  21. I try to apply the idea I’ve got in this program. Trying to make our home beautiful in design as this house. I like this home.

  22. Just curious, does anyone if any of the past winners are living in the dream houses they won?

  23. Hi All,

LB I am sure sonoma is well awaiting the Winner of the Dream Home, that must be the highlight conversation at their dinner tables, or where they gather especially seeingthe home up close. Imagine seeing me on the porch the first day, when people drive by, with two glasses of wine in hand

    IF I WIN.
LB hope you fantasized with me after all I love how things of this sort brings people together. Bet the whole of Sonoma would come look me up!!

    HelloooO Sonoma!! in advance. (lol)

  24. I read all the blogs but my first time writing. Love this beautiful home and especially it’s location. My husband, daughter and I live in Edmond, Oklahoma but would love to relocate to Cali as we have 2 children in the Navy stationed in San Diego. We also have a son graduating law school here moving to Cali. This would truly be a dream come true for our entire family.

  25. Can anyone tell me where I can find information on a new, updated address for mailing in entries for the DH2009?

I saw this information in one of the blogs but can’t find it now. It suggested that one could send in as many snail mail entries as one would like.

    Can anyone help me?

    Blessings to All,

  27. I think I’ve looked everywhere but I don’t see an elevator for handicap accessibility. Are the doors wide enough for a wheelchair and is there a way to get into the house other than steps? This home is beautiful and if the answer to these questions is no, you have limited occupancy to the walking population. I would love to win this house!

  28. We think that home is totally awesome!!!
    Good luck to everyone.

  30. forgive me if this has been asked, but I can’t find it–how much actual LAND is the house on? Looks like fairly tight zoning (not unusual for CA, just wondering what the acreage is).

    TIA.

  33. That HGTV Green Home is coming together very nicely. The location is very nice as well. Can’t wait to see it when it’s all done and furnished. You guys at HGTV do a great job with these homes you build and with all the home and garden ideas/tips you give as well. I’ve used a couple so far and have plans to use many more to turn my current home into a dream home.

  34. It does not matter the taxes because it is MY DREAM HOME. It is in the correct place, with the correct bedrooms for my family, in the colors that each one enjoy, even the car at the wall of the kids bedroom suit perfectly my young one. The patio herbs just like in my country, the grape vines will be perfectly manage to reach its maximum potential. It is just exactly what I have dream all my life and it resembles what my ancestors used to have in the villa at the D'Avila Providence in the Canary Islands. My grandfather will be amazed about its design because he was an architect himself. My grandmother will love the hardwood floors. It is a magnificent historical-like home that must have a person that really deserve it and that will take excellent care of it. My kids saw the pictures and love their bedroom, bathroom, patio and the dog house. It is amazing that this year the house were design for a family like us. The place selected will be perfect for our want-to-be movie director. It is not far from the house of our director friend. Even the car is exactly the one I like. In the kitchen everything is place in the same way I place it in my rent house right now. It is my dream home and I will not mine to take care of it and its maintainance. It is too bad I can not afford to buy it because if I got the money, I will ask the winner to sell it to me. Good luck everyone and to the winner; please take good care of that beautiful home that was design to be enjoy!

  35. I am homeless so I hope I win the Dream Home 2009. I would love to have a home again where my grandchildren can come visit their Nana. 2008 was the most difficult year of my life-I lost my job, my home, and ended up having a heart attack and emergency open heart surgery, but my Lord brought me through it all. I have high hopes for 2009!
