Good afternoon, bloggers!

January is just whizzing by, so it won’t be long now until a winner is chosen for the HGTV Dream Home 2009. (Did I mention that I get to go behind the scenes and check out the winner selection process? I can’t wait.)

Now, on to the questions:

•Although the wine closet in the study is not currently temperature controlled, it would prove an easy upgrade. Believe me, there are wine-storage specialists galore in Sonoma.

•Adding a female touch to the study would require nothing more than a beautiful bouquet of flowers and lots of shelf space to display girly things.

•Bay-area artist Anthony May is the person responsible for the artwork above the fireplace. The piece is entitled On Being Mortal (Part One).

•The double-mirror look in the master bathroom was created by layering framed mirrors in front of a flat wall-mounted mirror. This is another technique I will be using in my home.

Whew, just when I think all the questions have been answered, you come up with more! I love it. Don’t forget to check out HGTV Green Home Central for updates on the ’09 home currently under construction. And don’t forget to enter DAILY for your chance to win the HGTV Dream Home 2009 … you could end up livin’ in sunny Sonoma!

Your Super Fan,
Gail

  2. Hello everyone!

I just wanted to let everyone know that God has already declared this our new home! So on or about March 15, we will be ambushed with the good news! This is the year of the Lord’s favor and the Harris clan shall be favored. Thanks HGTV for our new home! God Bless!

  3. Why isn’t there a 1/2 bathroom downstairs? It seems very inconvenient for guest to have to go to the upstairs bedrooms. Just wondering that would effect the resale of the house.

  4. This is the most exciting contest I’ve ever entered. I am single and live in a 2 bedroom, 1 bath duplex. For the past 5 years I have lived with older women that could not take care of themselves and did not want to move into a nursing home. So I worked for them 24/7. Then a year ago decided I needed to live by myself but no money to buy a house. So, would love to live in a dream home. Thank you.

  5. Hi All,

222 bottles of wine stash upon those shelf

I really would be very stoned drinking them by myself

So I vowed to be quite nice by offering you a drink

It all depends on if I WIN, now that will be grate don’t you think

Well I am Drean Home crazed but gosh it feels so good indeed

For if I only win that that price I’ll be in Sonoma at full speed

Well fellow dreamers I’m awake and entering each day

To walk through that front door would be
    a blessing I would say

until the call is made my dears we all are in for it

So never let the taxes scare you dreamers just don’t quit

After all its worth the try though beggers must not choose

So the paint might not be to your taste but it would suck if you should loose

Now get excited drop the fears let winning be your aim

For if you choose to fuss about things get out of this here game

Oh wait a minute did you see the master tub its waiting just for me

Hello Sonoma, sweet Sonoma, prepare your self for me.

Guys I just felt great this morning and wanted to sing a little.

What do you think of Adele Harison middle School? I have a 10year old daughter (very smart) and i’m wondering if that would be a great choice in schools if we do win. What are the names of some of the other schools around? I need your take on that.

  10. California Dreamin for such a lucky day. Yes, it truly is a magnificient home in the
beautiful California wine country. The master bedroom is absolutely dreamy. The child’s room is fun and playful. Every room has rich colors and beautiful appointments. It’s just me and Nick, my 7 year old grandson. What a wonder it would be to raise him in a beautiful home with a yard and a dog. A home to make memories in.

  12. Hi all! Okay so I did it again, my daily or sometimes 10 times a day of touring this home. I just can’t get enough of it. I’m sure we all feel the same. What if it was me? I’m so emotional about this house. It’s so perfect!! I picture myself with my family and friends entertaining in the back. Having Thanksgiving dinner in that fabulous scrumptious dining room. Casual get togethers and movie night with our kids in the family room. It sure is a blessing to have this dream home available for some lucky winner. Hope my dream comes true…. God I could live in that laundry room!!! Happy Saturday!

  13. I agree….NO MORE DEBBIE DOWNERS puhleeze! No more sob stories…..Before you ask anymore questions PLEASE just read: 1. the blogs…..2. the website and all its very helpful info. Look at the show, download the pictures….freeze frame for details…It got to the point that I had to almost stop reading some of the blogging!! It was bringing me down…and I was full of enthusiasm….filling in my entries….humming all the way…and imagining my life in that house along with all the other happy bloggers….I respect everyone to speak their mind but some of the questions have been answered over and over and if you are NEW to this sweepstakes……my advice would be to try to find out as much as possible…navigate the HGTV website (which I feel is very thorough and informative) not to mention the wonderful tips and info we’ve gotten from some of the bloggers who have actually gone on the tour. THANKS YOU GUYS…Can we stop about the taxes…..the lack of this and the lack of that…my goodness….if you’re lucky enough to win….and the odds are tough….then you can worry all you want. In the meantime let us be the happy dreamers we are…let us be happy and play in our minds what a joy it would be to actually live in that great house…don’t like the green paint….PAINT IT OVER…not a big deal…..you have two daughters…..redo the kids room…..Once it’s yours and you keep it (and wouldn’t that be a pleasant change…I know I would) you can work your magic and make it your own…but one would be hardpressed to really put down the wonderful job that the whole gang has done….Kudos…..The house has to show well on TV….ergo…color choices I’m sure were made to accommodate that….but hey…you can go beige if you want. Okay….droning on here….sorry..just had to vent. So you downers out there….Hush now…and let us have some fun.

  14. It would be such a privlidge/honor to win this. Imagine living in a serene place surrounded with rolling hills. I’m sure this neighborhood is quite charming to say the least. I even love the lamp post on the corner! I know I’m destin to live in this home. Every decorating book/magazine I have ever purchased is primarily with a victorian, farm house sweedish style. I adore every milk and cranny of this place. I can imagine taking a wonderful bike ride to the farmer’s market with my hubby and two kids and then coming home and unwinding in that exquisite tub with a glass of wine in my hand (Love the reds). I would see my golden lab in her doggy house. My husband would be cooking up something fabluous in the kitchen for sure. Or who knows maybe on that BBQ. I love tea party’s. I would have some great one’s in that to die for tea parlor off the dining room. This house was meant to be mine. Okay…I know I’m dreamin here, but let me enjoy my moment. Good luck to all!!

  16. Funny Laura…that you mentioned Swedish Farmhouse….I wondered for weeks why I was drawn to this particular house…and then last week I realized that is does indeed resemble one….and that’s where I was born..in a house much like that one in a quaint town on the southwest coast of Sweden. There’s something about the architecture that harkens back to those days….the large wrap around porch…a hint of Victoriana without overdoing it…..Most traditional homes there in the past or “small summer homes” are painted a deep rusty red….When I opened a Childrens store in L.A. I tried to replicate that feeling…lots of bare wood, clean lines, a little ginerbread trim but not too much…to give the feeling that one had just walked into Granmas summer home…atleast it felt that way for me….Now if only I could open another store up in Sonoma…..the town is the perfect setting….heck I might do it if I don’t win…One is so close to SF and the beautiful coast line is something to behold. My family that lives in Sonoma County and I picnic on a green sloping mountainside overlooking the ocean…makes you feel like you could be anywhere in the world….then there’s the Russian River….Oh I could go on and on. It would be hard to leave L.A. but it’s time for a change….If I won I would keep my current house….and make it available to my family here and go back and forth.. But I think I would probably end up staying up north most of the time…Okay…..I’m digressing…and daydreaming again…see that’s what happens…I can tell by reading all the other bloggers….we get caught up and just picture ourselves in that wonderful house….perchance to dream”…that’s what’s so great about sharing….isn’t it. I do hope that whoever wins is FUN, EXTROVERT, HAS A JOY FOR LIFE, SMILES A LOT AND IS SUPER GRATEFUL AND A GENEROUS SOUL. What if they pick someone who is a real curmudgeon….it could happen…wonder if they have a back up plan…that would be dismal for the show..can you imagine someone winning and not being over the moon…well, yes we can…Let’s hope it’s one of us……the dreamy bloggers….we’ll give em a show worth showing..wont we. Much love, pleasant dreams and blue skies….from the Swedish gal from L.A. Get some sleep for Super Bowl Sunday!!! I’m in charge of pulled pork, cornbread and lemon pie. mmmm

  18. Hi All,

I spend the whole night coming up with ideas for the home if I should win, not to change it but to afford the taxes. The option are many, I am now more excited than when I started out after reading some of the other blogs questions and such. I tour the home
online room to room for hours actually with a pad and pen at hand. I calculated possible figures of how much I would need to afford the taxes, steps that I would take to bring in that kind of money, its really quite exciting after I did that, The worries seem to dissapear. I will advise each of you to try to come up with ideas, write them down, see a vision of how you can actually live in this adorable home if you should win, and if you don’t you are left with numerous Ideas to put into other projects you might have thought about. There is only a few more weeks to go and I want to be at least prepared if I should win, not winning and be nervous. I would like to win with confidence and it should go for every one also. from these blogs i have learnt a lot, brainstorming is only one of them, I learned to organize by exploring these blog categories, I knew nothing about blogging, never did it before, now I can do that, I am more educated about indept reseach about relocating, guys I don’t know about you but HGTV does a whloe lot for me over the years I watch them, I remember fighting for the remote to be able to tune in, irecall giving up my icecream, so I can navigate from Nikolodian, I even promise to be good to my partner just so I can get the remote (you know what I mean)to watch these shows
now I can say it has paid off, I decorate my stuffy NY apartment as if I went to school for a degree. Never let fear destroy your life. If you remain open and try to plan, like me I have from plan A to Za never heard of that huh, but its true some might not work but its good to know there are others in reserve. Hey I even thought of contacting the Housing and Land development representatives in Sonoma/CA to get them to help make it possible for the person who wins. That might sound crazy but our voices are made to be heard don’t ya think? I do not want to get too political, I even thought, could all of us
DH bloggers/intendents approach these Reps? they might just listen.
of course if HGTV oks it.

HGTV ist that something we can do collectively as participants in this sweepstakes?

    Well said !

    Others

I do not want yo dash any ones dreams over taxes.

My beef is with HDTV markiting the “house of your dreams for free” when it is HIGHLY unlikey the winner will be able to live in “the house of your dreams” That being said I would love to win the house in wich case I would do what 99.9 percent of the people entering would do in the end, gut it, sell it and happly drive off with a new SUV filled with cash.

    PS
I might keep one of the Sub-Zero’s if I can fit it in my regular house.

  20. This might be a stupid question- is there a bathroom on the first floor of the house? I don’t see one on the floor plan.

  21. This is great! I have entered EVERY day religiously and I have never been on this blog. We would LOVE to win this beautiful home and we have just the idea and means to afford the taxes. I know we would use and keep and love this home for many years. We live under 2 hours from Sonoma. This is a place to create special memories for family and friends for a lifetime. I love EVERYTHING that was so creatively choosen to decorate. The clasic with the modern, the simplistic yet elegant design is so my style! The kids room is perfect! The master bedroom is fabulous and I know I would be in that gorgeous tub every night. Thank you to all at HGTV for creating this special place. We all hope and DREAM for something special to happen to us in our lifetime. Good luck to all but I must admit. I WANT TO WIN!!

  24. Hi John,

How R U? Glad you read my post. I actually would keep the home and enjoy every bit of it, I’d just find ways to pay the taxes, we can’t expect HGTV to do everything now, it’s very considerate of them to have thought about these projects in the first place.
The possibilities are endless depending on who you are and how you would go about the process. I am in school full time and work full time, hey I would love to be able to get the break at my first home, I see it as being 10 steps higher than I would have been if I win the home, only at this stage I would have different goals and strategies to make it even better for me and my family. You see Some people might have their home and is paying a mortgage or RENT like I do, so its understandable that they/I would have to find new jobs, this money can be used for the taxes along with other cash if people have creative minds. John I understand your point if you so choose to sell if you should win, thats a matter of your preference which I do respect. I will try my hardest not to sell even if I’d have to walk up to Washington barefooted to get obama’s advice.
(LOL) my grandmother always says ” you can lead a donkey to the water but you cannot make him drink it” many will enter this contest, many will think about selling but I will deffinitely FIND ways to work it out.
    Good luck to us all.

  25. I had a dream, and within this dream was a dream. Intertwined within this dream of a dream was a single key. This single key had a fob shaped like a home, cushioned on the grip. I nervously placed this key into the slot of a lock. As I turned the key the door opened without assistance. Feeling compelled, I entered the room. Although the room seemed crowded visually, I could freely roam without hinderence. I asked a man dressed in blue how many people were in this room. He replied “222″. I then asked why they were all dressed in shades of purple. “They’re vintage” was his reply. I was then given another key and told to take a ride, but I could not find a place to insert the key on either of the two bikes I viewed. I was then reminded by the person dressed in blue that the second key was for the road. “Have two here and have one for the road”, he said. I remember a sense of well being as I put this key into my pocket, but also remember wondering what the key unlocked. I reached into my pocket to take a look at the key again, however I pulled out the first key I had been given. The fob was no longer shaped like a house, it now had something etched into it. I could not make it out, so I was searching for someone who could read it for me, but before I found anyone, I realized I could clearly see what what written. I knew it was an address, but it didn’t make sense to me. “5E”. I thought maybe it was an apartment number so I asked the person in blue. I was told that it is this address (the place I was at). Then suddenly I was on a plane, but had a ticket to return to where I had just come from, “5E”.I then awoke. Can anyone make sense of this dream?

Jim on February 2, 2009 at 1:02 am
  26. as fas as I figure it, the chances are around 1.837 million to 1 that anyone who enters wins this house – why worry about taxes, money for upkeep, etc. – only one person will have “the Problem” and I am certain they will survive – constanly thinking of taxes and cash makes you old – dreaming gives you a break

I would be the luckiest woman in the world to win this exquisite perfect dream home. All the details are to die of this house are to die for. I want to live in Sonoma soooo badly. It’s is such a quiet peacefull place. What a heavenly place to raise my children. It seems like a community in which you would be involved and really have a sense of pride. Can’t wait to get my hands dirty in the garden! Dreamin….

  28. You will be forced to sell if you win this dream house! Read what has happened to last year’s winner from the Key West Citizen newspaper 2.2.2009. Their Florida Keys dream house is their new nightmare:

‘Dream Home’ idles on the market
    By Robert Silk Citizen Staff

Even a “Dream Home” is tough to sell these days.

Stephanie and Thomas Dee, winners of the Home and Garden Television Dream Home on Plantation Key in May, listed their famous bayfront home for $2.5 million in July. So far there have been no takers.

“We’ve had some phone calls, but you know, in this market I think people all over have been waiting for things to come down,” said Kathy Rogers, the Dee family’s real estate agent.

The winning couple, from Salon, Iowa, beat out 40 million entries for the fully appointed 3,500-square-foot home adjacent to Founders Park.

Their prize package, valued at $2.2 million, included a 2008 Yukon Hybrid and a luxury dog house sporting a blue and gold exterior that matches the home.

Stephanie Dee, in a recent interview, said the family, including her two small daughters, Sydney and Taylor, had a great time when they visited the home in June for a couple weeks.

“The whole house is amazing,” she said. “There was nothing we changed. The views were amazing.”

Their decision to put the property on the market is in keeping with what most of the first 12 Dream Home winners have done. The high cost of upkeep and property taxes on the fancy homes typically prove unaffordable for middle-income families.

The Islamorada Dream Home, for example, brought the Dees a property tax bill in excess of $13,000 this year. Plus, there are taxes from the winnings. The $2.2 million bonanza would have been treated as income by the IRS.

Stephanie Dees is a physician’s assistant when she’s not out winning houses. Thomas Dees is a contractor.

Despite the big tax hit, winning the Dream Home has been a great experience, she said.

“At times it’s still hard to believe it happened,” she said.

If the couple is able to fetch anywhere near the $2.37 million the home is listed at, they’ll end up faring quite nicely in the pocketbook as well.

“At this point we just want to get the Dream Home sold so somebody can enjoy it,” Rogers said. “The tax bill and the insurance bills are just too much for use to handle”

My mom tried to kill heself and is now undable to work so we hade no income for about 2 years. About 4 months ago she was approved by ss to get disability. We curently are living in a government funded appartment that is way too small for us. (Not to mention the mushrooms that are growing on our balcony- NO JOKE) I have to believe that moving out of the current surounding and enviroment would do out family a lot of good.

Couldn’t sleep and was just watching my usual channel 112 HGTV. I am always so inspired to beautify my home and whatching the pros to get ideas. I can only dream what it would be like to win a Dream Home.
My granddaughter spends the summers and holidays w/ us and she would be blown away. She’s only seven but she always wants to see what all I have done to make her room beautiful for the summers. I’ve worked for the last 30 yrs non stop and would never be able to obtain something like that in my lifetime. I’ll be 50 on May 18th and that would just be the ultimate gift I could ever Dream of.
Great show. We just had the Extreme makeover show here in El Paso recently and I saw the joy that they have given that family. What an awesome thing to do for people.

  42. This year’s dream house design is fantastic. I have entered my name, husband’s and adult daughter’s into the sweepstakes. I hope that one of us wins. I’ve been on the east coast all of my life, soon to retire and I’m ready for a change. This house reminds me so much of the turn of the century carriage houses with the porch and columns. I own and live in a house that will be 100 years old in four more years and I love houses with a lot of windows and high ceilings. I can see myself sitting outside reading a good novel, sipping a glass of wine and having a few of my neighbors over for dinner. I would welcome the slower pace of life in Sonoma. As a Cherokee-Black American I would also add color to the demographics of the neighborhood. My two Labrador Retrievers would love romping in the backyard and my cat would love sitting by one of the windows taking in the sun. So please HGTV make my dream come true.

All of the worries, concerns, and hopes and dreams of this home are just a part of everyday life, no matter where you live. As a home owner, a parent, a sister I will never stop dreaming!!! 45. I Log on every day Gaze at the dream home and dream some more…People seem very concerned about the taxes. Forgive me if this has been mentioned before as i have three kids a full time job and religious meetings to attend, and have not had the oppertunity to read all the blogs. Who ever wins the dream home will increase there net worth by over Two millon dollars, you would be able to afford a financial counselor and the taxes For our Dream home …

  46. HAVING A HARD TIME SLEEPING AND THOUGHT I’D ENTER A MIDNIGHT BLOG…IT’S GETTING DOWN TO THE WIRE….I’VE ENTERED AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE BOTH BY EMAIL AND POST….IT WOULD BE GREAT TO WIN..NO DOUBT…BUT I WILL BE HAPPY TO SEE A ‘HAPPY’ WINNER….NOT SOMEONE WHO IS WORRIED ABOUT TAXES AND ALL THE OTHER THINGS MENTIONED….DON’T ENTER A SWEEPSTAKES WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING OF THE RESPONSIBILITIES….AND AS A PARTICIPANT WE HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO THE NETWORK AND ALL THOSE INVOLVED TO BE IN THIS NOT JUST FOR OUR GAIN BUT TO ‘REPRESENT’ AS THE KIDS SAY….JUST HOPING THERE IS SOMETIME JUMPING…AND I MEAN SOME HIGH JUMPING…FOR JOY WHEN THEY WIN….I DON’T WANT TO SEE SOME HALF BAKED WHEEE…IT’S ME…..I WANT JUBILANCE…ECSTACY AND JOY…TO THE MAX…SO WINNER….PLEASE DON’T DISAPPOINT. BY THE WAY THE ADDITION OF THE PALM WAS BRILLIANT…IT ADDED SO MUCH AND WAS APPROPRIATE TO THE SCALE…I LOVE THAT ABOUT HGTV….THEY KEEP ON TRYING TO MAKE THINGS BETTER….AND THE GUYS INVOLVED UP THERE TOO ARE GREAT…THEY REALLY CARE AND IT COMES THROUGH…IT SEEMS GENUINE. GOOD LUCK TO ALL INVOLVED….I’M STILL CROSSING MY FINGERS. AND SENDING THOSE ENVELOPES…MY HUSBAND IS HIGHLY AMUSED BY MY SWEEPSTAKES TIME THAT I TAKE EACH DAY….says he’s never seen me get this enthused and conmitted about a contest…but he’s all for it and he says he’s ready for that second home and the move…Made him watch the show for the second time so he really gets it….so he can think about it…he’s a sweetheart…he indulges me…but I know if we win he will be very happy…we both want to move there and have for some time….took up too much space…..tired…it’s late…night

  50. If I understand this correctly, if you do not have almost a million dollars to pay the taxes you are not even considered for the prize? It seems that this sweepstakes is for the wealthy and middle class or lower have no chance whatsoever! If that is the case, shame on HGTV! Why not offer a home that we can afford? I love HGTV but if this is how this works, then I am really disappointed! The house may be beautiful but IT IS OUT OF REACH for even our dreams!
