What’s in Those Drawers?

Good afternoon, bloggers!

Someone recently posted a fabulous suggestion. He or she wanted a “sneak peek” inside the drawers and closets of HGTV Dream Home. (I am so sorry — I don’t remember who posted the question. I couldn’t find the original query, as there are so many blog posts and questions now.) I was back at the HGTV Dream Home on Friday and took these pictures of what you will find in some of the kitchen drawers as well as one of the pantries.

Every time I go inside the home, I notice something different and special. I hadn’t spent much time in the guest bathroom, but was so impressed by its spa-like feel during this most recent visit.

Tamara, thank you for your question about how the mailed entries are counted for the drawing. I will definitely find out the answer when I go to Knoxville to witness the sweepstakes drawing. I will report back then!

Your Super Fan,
Gail

P.S.: Should the suggested party for bloggers be hosted by the HGTV Dream Home 2009 winner, I will absolutely be there with dessert in hand. Sorry, Coop, it won’t be lemony — chocolate desserts are my specialty. I will also bring my corn and heirloom-tomato salad.

  1. thanks gail for the sneek peek in all the corners and hidden spots. nice to know you're there trying to fill in the gaps the cameras can't get it all of course for those of us who can't get to Sonoma for a tour. I also love the idea for the house warming party. all the bloggers would definity enjoy the promotional pictures of that too i'm sure. guess it would definitly mean a chance to empty the house of all that wine. guess everyone should bring a local wine from their area for re-stocking the supply. A real sipping in sonoma party, with all that food would definity feed a lot. sounds very kool

  2. Ahhhhhh Gail!! I knew you would come up with something fantastic & you did!! The photos are GREAT…so wonderful to actually see what is in those drawers! I can’t believe how much thought has gone into every detail of this home, all the way down to the place mats! I love the carafes I’m seeing on the shelves…beautiful in color and style..just perfect for those late afternoon tea parties!! Thank you once again Gail!!

  3. Gail: Forgot to say, chocolate desserts are my very favorite as well, so I’m looking forward to your specialty. I will also look forward to you bringing your corn and heirloom-tomato salad. Please tell me about that recipe..it sounds devine..mind shaing it? Or, does it have to remain a secret in your family?

  4. There I go again with typos..it’s just that I was so excited to see your post Gail, I forgot to proof read my comment! So, correction once again….shaing should have been sharing!!

  5. Thank you Gail,
Wow! I was wondering where to put the glasses and mugs. As inspector Clueso would say mystery solvedd! Now If you could do one on the powder room on the first floor
and the storage door in the office? lol Thank you for taking the time to keep us all informed. Great job.

  8. Thanks Gail!!!
Everytime I am curious about a item, you always post the answer. When I win, I will make my special dish of jerk chicken on my grill. Heh, heh, heh!!! The days are counting down!!! Gotta get my hair, just in case of an ambush. See you bloggers later!!!

  9. Gail, with the hand on display in the study, are there any other severed body parts hiding in the drawers? ;-) Just kidding.

  10. I love the additional details of my home you are posting Gail. I watch videos and pictures of my home everyday. I cannot wait to move in here with my family. I have already evisioned my housewarming and first winetasting.

  11. Okay, I’m convinced! Marie Miller is the blog plant. It’s either your on the blog 24/7 or there are 5 of you.
DBCoop- Aloha! Let me know if you find any pineapple recipes there.
Gail – you did it again! I have to admit that I was also curious what was in those drawers! I can’t believe that everything besides the house warming gifts are included. If I end up having two of anything, they will be given to those less fortuate for sure!
Okay, I have to ask again in case nobody read my last post, will we have to BYOB for the SIS party?

  12. Happy Monday, Bloggers and other California Dreamers. As the day draws closer to the end of this year’s DH contest, I find that I become more, rather than less, verbose. Today, will not be an exception. I was glad to see that Gail honored my “nosey” request to open drawers, cabinets and closets. I was actually thinking more along the lines of a video, but the pictures are great. Thank you.
Arlene, the Sippin in Sonoma Bloggers party (SISBP) wasn’t conceived to be just a party for regular bloggers. It’s for anyone interested in coming. We’re hoping the winner (or better yet, HGTV hosts it) but if not, I say, we all just go up to Sonoma and party on the winners behalf. After all, whoever win, won’t we be happy for that person? BTW, if you win and you decide to have that “Clean the Dream Home Party” – count me out!
Gracious, lovely Marie Miller, I love your Van Gogh quote the other day, as well as your ideal of a (Hmmmm) mental Margarita? I’m at work, so I think I’ll have a mental frozen, strawberry Margarita right now. The sky is bluer, the weather’s perfect, the month is April and suddenly my desk has been transported to the 09DH Study– which I own! Wow!
Deryck, We DON’T want the DH in Chicago. Although Chicago is the most fabulous city in the world, it is too COLD in the winter and too HOT in the summer. Just think of how cold it was a couple of weeks ago – MANY days below zero.
DBCoop, loved your Galileo quote – I’m dreaming BIG dreams! I hope that you’re enjoying your vacation. I think you must need it, because once again, I’ve had to contact the Legal Beagles at HGTV and Scripps, to clarify the “real” rules for everyone. Although your interpretation of the blogger rules is mostly correct, disdaining comments about the adjacent neighborhood homes are discouraged on Fridays and may be replaced with questions about the Powder Room (since it is only visible on Mondays). You may ask about taxes on Mondays (as I correctly pronounced in my earlier e-mail) and Tuesdays are reserved for bloggers
Katherine, thanks for the recipe. Are you trying to collaborate with Marie Miller on that cookbook?
RHONDA ROHRER, I can’t believe you’re asking for the address of the Dream Home, when you say that you’ve already moved in and have had parties there, already – just go to the address of the house that you threw those parties in. LOL.
Jerry and Katydid – great idea about 2 Dream Homes. Twice the fun! I wonder if that would happen? Does anyone know how much the taxes are on the 09DH? Could someone please take the time to figure for me, how much the state property taxes, federal gift taxes, Sonoma County assessments are and any other taxes.
I share Sandy’s earlier sentiments, I will GRACIOUSLY lift the burden of anyone who wins the 09DH and doesn’t want to keep it – just sign it over to me (at no cost, of course! St. Clement of Alexandra stated that , “If you do not hope, you will not find what is beyond your hopes.” So, I say, “If you dare not to dream, you will not find out what is beyond your dreams”. Good luck and happy dreaming to us, all.

  13. Thanks Gail, every detail of the home is beautiful and great pictures. If I was to build a dream home, this is the one I would build. I guess I will just have to win this one, my fingers are crossed. Good luck everyone!

  14. I know this is off subject here (I don’t even know if anyone has asked this or not) but I know this is “The Dream Home Giveaway” but why can’t HGTV do about 10-15 $150,000 homes totally furnished all over the country so that people can really live in them? Don’t get me wrong. I love all the Dream Homes but I know if I were to win I would in no way be able to afford to live in it. It would be more of a dream to win a $150,000 home knowing I could actually afford to live in it. That would be so wonderful. Just a question I’ve wondered about for several years now. Thanks and keep up the good work!

Makayla on February 9, 2009 at 3:25 pm
  15. Elizabeth, to answer your question from the previous post, the button to the right of the kitchen sink turns on the garbage disposal. I got to tour the Dream house this past Saturday and the guide let us peek into the pantries full of dishes, serving pieces and small appliances. She showed us the wonderful cabinet doors and drawers that cannot be slammed shut but instead close softly and silently! With only a half hour to tour the whole house we didn’t get a chance to linger and check out every cabinet and drawer (she did show us the pull out shelf in the cabinet to the left of the stove with it’s treasure of brightly colored kitchen linens). There is no entry closet. You would need a coat tree or perhaps make the pantry closest to the entry into a coat closet? It was so much fun seeing the house up close and personal and in 3D instead of just from the camera’s eye. The floors are gorgeous! Two things that I noticed were that the distance from the front door to the fireplace is not as deep as it looks on screen and the nook table is bigger and oval instead of round as it appeared to me on screen. I wish all of you could see the house in person, it truly is a beautiful place!

  16. Hey Gail, do you think you can get HGTV to post a “how to” on recreating the curtain treatment surrounding the bed in the master bedroom? Thanks ahead of time for looking into this. :-)

  17. Aloha>>>

Gail thanks for posting the pictures for us “nossy” ones who were dying to know what was in those cabinets and drawers. I just moved in to a condo and don’t have anything much to fill those cabinets with so it’s nice to know that some of them will be filled with products…if I win!!! How fun to move into a new home and already have a house warming party all set up for you :) I hope all of you voted for the exact same things I did because I really want to move in with a waffle maker, mixer, etc. hehehe.

BTW…do you know what kind of wines will be stocked with the DH Gail??? Of course I’d only be minutes away from the best wineries anyway huh. How exciting!!!

    DH hopeful,

    Charlene

If only we could all see this incredible home in person. Thank you for all of the detailed descriptions from the ones who have seen it. It is perfection!! We would all be so lucky to live in it! Good luck everyone!!

  19. What’s the age limit to win this beautiful house? Can it be passed on to a family member?

Harper on February 9, 2009 at 4:35 pm
  20. The Dream House is a stunningly gorgeous. And Sonoma is an incredibly serene town. I visited last year and am looking forward to returning.

Thank you, HGTV, for this gift.My favorite rooms are the dining room (look the little nook near the window!),. the family room (great colors, and fireplace), master bedroom (again, love the reading nook!) and the master bath (so spa-like!). I especially liked the use of the floor to ceiling curtains in the foyer. So elegant.

I do have a quick question. And this may have already been addressed previously, but if someone is in the middle of moving in March, how is that handled? Obviously the cellphone number and email address would stay the same, just the physical address would differ, but didn’t know if HGTV sent snail mail to the winner first. If so, might be tied up in the postal system.

  21. I have been a huge fan of HGTV for years. I think I drive my family (husband, 13 yr. old boy and 12 yr. old twins) CRAZY b/c it is on constantly. HGTV trumps ESPN in our house.

I have entered this contest almost daily with the hope of winning. I joke everyday with the other teachers in my building that next year during Winterbreak I will NOT be grading papers but enjoying wine in Sonoma. I love the whole create your postcard idea! I will send them a reminder so they get a few more chuckles.

Your design team is GIFTED and HGTV and its sponsors are amazing! I love my GMC Acadia and Sherwin Williams paint in my home and would LOVE to find out which colors are used in each room. Could Sherwin Williams make a list so each person can recreate the “look”.

    Thanks for this opportunity!

    Very hopeful in Ohio

  26. The Super Fan ideal is a HIT!!! Gail is doing a wonderful job.

Thank you so much HGTV for inventing this ideal.

And thank you Gail, for being our eyes, ears, and voice.

You are a great pick for this job!! :D

lovelykitty on February 9, 2009 at 5:37 pm
  27. Bonnie glad you were able to take the tour. Yes, what surprised me most was the fact that the family room was not as far from the front door as the pictures and the 360 tour made it look.

And also, I was surprised at how much nicer the guest bedroom looks in person.

It would be nice if we could still have the “Sippin In Sonoma” party, even if no one from here wins, being that so many of us live close enough. We could have it in the park in the Town Square.

Lets make the dream real!!!!! :D

  28. Dear HGTV Bloggers (DH2009), I was excited to see what’s in the little cubby’s of storage! The linens are so brightly displayed, I wish I could see them in person. However, Gail you have been doing a lovely job “showing the wares”!! My 15 year old son (he’s already claimed the guest quarters!) asked me today “If you could take 1 item from our home (not including our clothes and personal pictures)to live in the DH2009, what would you take?” I had to give it some thought and came up with a small drop leaf desk that belonged to my husband’s grandfather! Everything else could be sold “in place”!! I’m curious, fellow bloggers “what would your 1 item be?” I don’t think that we have to count the wine stored in your cellar today; it’s obvious that would come along for the ride and the SIS party!! Gail, keep those blogs, pictures, and video’s coming–we LOVE them!!

Melinda on February 9, 2009 at 5:54 pm
  29. Hi Gail,

Thanks for the pictures. Everything is so well thought out. This home is a blessing to the winner! If you’re still “learning” after all your visits to the Dream Home, just think how the winner will react. A new beginning – that’s what I call it.

    Katherine,

I like your BYOB idea especially since the SIS party seems to be growing. I think I would have this party at the park rather than the dream home because I wouldn’t want to clean up after so many people!

Lessie on February 9, 2009 at 6:03 pm
  30. Lovelykitty,

I like your idea of having the SIS party in the Town Square, if that’s possible. I wouldn’t want to create any extra work for the winner because I want them to enjoy their new home and have fun at the party – not be burdened by preparation for the party.

Has anyone decided the date and time for the party? I already know that the menu will be great because this blog has some great cooks. But what about the other details? Even though I won’t be there, I want to experience this party in my mind like Marie Miller enjoys her mental margaritas.

Lessie on February 9, 2009 at 6:19 pm
  31. Hey all!

I’ve been reading these blogs for a few days now (work is waaaay slow), and I’m getting more and more excited about the day they announce the winner!! I’m a tad worried about the taxes, but I promise I’ll never mention that ever again!!!!! Hehe!! I, like everyone else I’m sure, have actually had dreams of walking around the house, going into the kitchen, trying to remember which fridge holds what, etc. What a dream come true!!
Well enough dreaming for now. I gotta earn my paycheck right?? :-p

  32. after reading all of today’s comments i realized how everyone is so into this house, it trully is beautiful, and although i’d be jumping on one foot if i won,i’d be happy knowing who ever wins will take care of it and of course enjoy every minute of it.
when i first found out about this home give away, i told my husband you have to enter!! and we have daily, hoping to win of course, we have a 2 year old and we’re expecting out second in july, and we picture ourselves in this house living and enjoying everything about it, to those of you who have been able to see the house in all its glory,YOU’RE SO LUCKY!! i wish i could see it and be able to be inside of it, since i live in new jersey its kinda difficult, but if i was to win, we would probably trying to move in before we’re allowed…
To all of us trying to win this, best of luck and whoever wins i hope you’re happy and get to enjoy every minute of this beautiful and trully amazing home.

  37. Melinda,

At this point, my dreaming doesn’t include what I will bring to the dream home. Only when I win will I focus on that. Why allow reality to get in the way of dreaming?

    Lovelykitty,

If you’re not as creative in the kitchen as you once were, no problem! I’m sure there’s a fantastic food establishment on your way to Sonoma. Stop in and pick up some tasty delight(s). There’s nothing wrong with expert help when you need it.

What’s on the SIS party menu?

  38. Hello Clareatha

There isn’t a basement in the house. That would have been nice…wouldn’t it? But, it is beautiful without a basement anyway.

I love seeing what is in the drawers and I was just wondering what may be lerking for discovery in all the drawers in the house. It would be nice to see the closet in the study though.

I was wondering if anyone else noticed that there are vents for AC/Heating upstairs on the ceiling but, there isn’t any downstairs. So, I was curious where the AC/Heating vents are…if anyone knows the answer please let me know. Also, the tankless water heater in the laundry room is great…it gives more space for other things and it saves energy! I just keep finding out more things about the house that are good. I am looking forward to moving in although the move from NC to California will be a big change in atmosphere…I think I am ready though. I see the children running around and enjoying the fresh, warm, slightly salty (since the ocean is only 45 mins away…yeaaaa!:) ) air of Sonoma and that takes away all the fear of leaving all my blood-related family members on the East Coast.

May God bless the children and all of you.

MLuciano on February 9, 2009 at 8:45 pm
  39. opppss….I meant to say lurking not lerking. Oh, and thanks Gail for showing us what is in the drawers of the kitchen. It was great seeing the small details.

  43. Good evening all
    Melinda
I actually have thought about what I would bring too. Besides cloths, pics and crafting items, the only thing that I would bring would be my Grandfather Clock. It actually was my Great-grandfather’s. My dad gave it to me when he moved a few years ago, It was always in the living room when I was a kid growing up in Marin Co. It would look perfect in the hall way entrance and on the other side I have a painting of Muir woods in a shadow box that was always across from the clock. The Clock is marked on the side “San Fransisco Clock Co 1903″ I am a 5th generation SF/Marin CA girl. We moved north to Sonoma Co 20 years ago because we couldn’t afford to buy in Marin.
    ( I know that’s 2 items but they really are a set. : )

When I was a little girl we use to go up to the town of Sonoma all the time. My grandpa’s sister, Naomi, lived right up the street from the main square. They lived a few houses down from the Dairy Queen that use to be on the main road into town. We would always go to dinner at an Italian restaurant right across from the square, On the way home my grandpa would always stop at a roadside stand that sold cherry juice – It was in a stretch of eucalyptus trees, it had a white sign that was written in red paint. We weren’t allowed to drink it in his LTD so we would have to drink it real fast but the memory of it is will last a life time. I wonder if any of those things are still there? Besides the main square of course…: )
These memories are over 40 years old, I hope I can give my kids the same kind of wonderful memories of Sonoma that my family gave me.

Marie M, I haven’t read the weekend blogs yet, but I see that other people are asking about the menu too. I’m right across the highway and would love to help you plan out the party. If I win I would like it to be at the house, I was thinking of an auction of some of the things we wouldn’t be keeping to help pay those pesky taxes as part of the party. I saw someone made a reference to “The Hand” in the study. That would be up for grabs. All pun intended.;) Good night, Good luck, and God Bless.

  44. Hey bloggers and other California Dreamers:
What a great question Melinda asked us to consider. The one item that I would have to take from my own home into the 09DH would not be one item but the name of one item, i.e. pictures. I have some great framed artwork and some personal family pictures that would have to be a part of this home (I’ve already decided where I’m going to place them). As IllinoisNancy mentioned, I’d probably have some of the personal photos converted into black and white ones to replace the ones in the Guest Room.
We certainly don’t want the winner to be burdened with hosting the SISBP (notice I keep including the BP to emphasize that this is a Blogger’s Party), so this may end up being a BYOB and BYOD (bring your own dish, so the menu would be pretty eclectic) to the Sonoma Town Square (although, if I win, I would have at least a modest party IN THE 09DH for those of you who have brightened my day with your daily posts and I would look forward to any chocolate dishes). I’m wondering Ingrid, how much planning has to be done to do this? What kind of permit has to be obtained and does the person requesting the permit, have to be a Sonoma resident?
Thank you Gail for being such a great super-fan. Good night, Chip, DB Coop (hope you’re having a great vacation), Tom, Deryck, gracious Marie Miller, Lovelykitty, Ingrid & Bobo, Bonnie, Katydid, 2Cherubs, Jennifer, Victoria, IllinoisNancy, Arlene, JandVsmom, Amykquerin (hope you’re still with us) and all the rest of you wonderful bloggers. Happy dreaming and good luck to us, all.

  47. Gail, great pictures as usual! What would I bring? An oil painting my husband brought home to me from Paris years ago — it was still not dry as he traveled — that was a hard thing to do. Years later on a trip back to Paris we ate in a restaurant and to my surprise when we returned home, it was the same restaurant as in the painting that he had bought years ago. Needless to say it is very special to us both.

For all those who will not be able to attend the Sipping in Sonoma Party, I think a local should organize a SISBP and it can be called a SIPPING AND WISHING WE WERE IN SONOMA BLOGGERS PARTY -AKA—SAWWWISBP. What do you think? Any takers? Everyone should celebrate “Dreaming” no matter where you live.

Maybe the midnight hour and the full moon here has gone to my head.

Sweet Dreams to all you lovely Valentine Bloggers!!!!

  50. I can’t believe how wonderful it’s going to be for the winner to walk into their new home with only their clothing to unpack! Can you imagine what a great experience that would be? I’ve always felt that “moving” has to be the worst job ever…but HGTV has eliminated all the pain and agony for some lucky family. Can’t wait to meet the new owners…maybe I’ve already been blogging with them for months! Ingrid from Sonoma
