Tuesday’s Clue: Can You Crack It?

What’s the connection between the American black bear and
the HGTV Dream Home 2010 location? Photo by chascar.

You think I’d let a day slip by without a clue? Come on!

I am thinking of a word. Starts with c and ends with r. You’ll find it somewhere in the HGTV Green Home 2009 Master Bathroom feature article. Figure it out and then tell me how it relates to the HGTV Dream Home 2010 location.

  5. I would rather use the word “Ceasar”. At least there is a Ceasar Lake in West Virginia! :)

  6. American Black Bear is the state animal for NM and the airport is Orange National Airport

Cathy Lemar on May 19, 2009 at 5:20 pm
  7. Corner is a good word too: as in Tyson’s Corner VA, Cosner’s Corner VA, Clay Corner VA etc.. :)

Ed in Oregon on May 19, 2009 at 5:24 pm
  8. Of course in keeping with “Mean Mary’s” style, corner also fits in with the four corners area of the country. We all know that New Mexico is one of the corners in the four corner area! :(

  15. Color, counter, corner. Let’s see, I choose CORNER b/c you’ve backed me into a corner waiting for the 2010 dream home location!

Should I be like a frustrated bear and come out fighting or be like the hungry bear and continue to search for clues?

Mary, I challenge you to be brave enough to throw down the gauntlet and tell you boss that it’s time to reward the faithful bloggers with the 2010 Dream Home location! You can do it! Don’t worry about the recession or the person who wants your job. We’ll support you–temporarily that is. Stand up and do the right thing! :)

  16. Oh my Mary: Are you twisting the clues again? I do find Color & Corner in the HGTV Green Home 2009 Master Bathroom feature article….here’s one over the top answer:

‘Corner’ may represent the Four Corners area of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona. Oops, are we back talking about Utah vs. New Mexico and/or Arizona? Side note: Black bears are the only species that live in Utah??????????

Marie Miller on May 19, 2009 at 6:36 pm
  17. It sounds like the clue is “corner”, meaning the part of the four corners that is in new mexico. I still am hoping for Virginia or Massachusettes though!

Is this the clue? I ask because I notice that the comments don’t close until september.

    B. G. on May 19, 2009 at 7:21 pm
  18. “Canister”

Containing Q-tips. That company was started in NYC.

    http://www.qtips.com/history.php

My guess is that DH10 will be in the NYC area, probably the Hudson Valley.

JSB on May 19, 2009 at 7:31 pm
  19. Sorry, I meant to say: Is this the LAST clue? If so, perhaps we find out where the next Dream Home will be quite soon!

    B. G. on May 19, 2009 at 7:35 pm
  20. OK–I’ll take a shot at this Mary–begins with c ends with r–wild guess I know–but I googled Caesar for CeasarStone–My guess is the Pocono Mountains—bears, bikes etc….So how’s I do???

Bunny on May 19, 2009 at 7:44 pm
  21. Cathy: Orange National Airport in New Mexico? I don’t see any listing for that–where is it located?

DBCoop on May 19, 2009 at 7:52 pm
  22. Okay…I do find counter & Caesar as well, but can’t find one association with those two words! Come on, our Chief of Quiz…yes, that would be none other than King of Klues, Mr. 007…DBCoop!! Did Show Me take over the computer again? Tell Show Me that Coop needs to come play at the Dream Home site for a little time…we need his expert sluething skills!! What about this photo…the Black Bear again? It seems as though Mary is hitting us over the head again and again…what are we missing? The terrain looks like Lake Tahoe…? Could this photo be the back door to Utah? I tried to research “Photos by Chascar” to no avail. I should have known that would be too easy! Anyway, I’m anxious to see what you have to say Coop! :)

What about that tree…is that another clue?

Marie Miller on May 19, 2009 at 8:02 pm
  23. My first thought about this connection: as Mary asks, “What’s the connection between the American black bear and the HGTV Dream Home 2010 location?” “The word starts with C and ends with R.” That would be the COLOR BLACK, which is related to the 2010 Dream Home location. Now work on that one!

DBCoop on May 19, 2009 at 8:07 pm
  24. my bad Coop…it’s a store…thought it was an airport LOL :)

Cathy Lemar on May 19, 2009 at 8:09 pm
  25. do you think it is another clue when she says can you CRACK it?

Cathy Lemar on May 19, 2009 at 8:39 pm
  26. what would you crack that is black? Black walnuts? what else?

Cathy Lemar on May 19, 2009 at 8:44 pm
  27. I will throw this out, even though I don’t consider it a strong connection: there is a ‘Black Pond’ in Fairfax County, Virginia.

DBCoop on May 19, 2009 at 8:46 pm
  28. Coop…

You are such a better poet,
    and this we’ll all agree,
    I always love to read
all the fun facts that I see.

I hope to someday meet you
    on an ivory sandy beach,
with Marie, our real true favorite,
    our perfect southern peach!

For now, I will be going,
as my family I must feed,
I can not wait til later,
when there’s more for me to read!

I know it’s short and sweet…maybe I should make a couple of Long Island Iced Teas since I have a fabulous new recipe (maybe it will help my poetry)

    Living the Dream!

P.S. I’ll be back later tonight to work on this one! Hope to see you then!

  29. BLACK BEAR Granite is the largest supply of granite for COUNTER tops and is located in Woburn, MA. Can you crack granite? LOL

Cathy Lemar on May 19, 2009 at 8:57 pm
  30. OH my WORD!!!! Mary— you are going to scare some bear-phobic people away—-Well, naturally, I’m thinking that locals in CHARLOTTESVILLE call CHARLOTTESVILLE— CHARLESR—- I’ll have to work on this one–

    - but you know what??? CATHY LEMAR ain’t so bad after all– and I’m thinking now— whether it’s Virginia or Massachusetts— BOTH will be fine choices

America is BEAUTIFUL— I don’t mean to me nerdy, but— God Bless America

From the Palm Trees of Florida to the Shenondoah Mountains of Tennessee to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia to the Statue of Liberty in NY to the Vibrant Colors of New England— well, nothing else really matters—- maybe except, Sunset Blvd, in California— OK, I still have to work on this one

    LOL LOL LOL LOL

Remember— no matter where it is— there aint’ nothing like the good ole’ U.S.A.

  31. Cathy,
If you look at the list for products, it lists as CaesarStone eco-friendly countertops. Just wanted to pass that along. Ready for another hint!

Michelle on May 19, 2009 at 9:11 pm
  32. I don’t know what Caesar has to do with it except that house may be in Italian stile villa.

vesna on May 19, 2009 at 9:41 pm
  33. OK, I’m really stumped now. I hope that our bear-phobic bloggers don’t go nutty!!!! I’m actually laughing about this photo— MARY IS SOMETHING ELSE, HUH??? She knows how to keep the Suspense going!!!!

    1. I’m thinking– Dendrobium Orchids are coming back into the picture—- They were in the FIRST PICTURE GALLERY—I still have to google more on it— but , I’m pretty sure, that they (from what I remember) are in abundance in FLORIDA and CALIFORNIA—- still have to check on that though.

    2. I hate to say this— because I really don’t like the idea of New Mexico— but maybe we need to ” google” more about these areas— NOT Alberque— but maybe, Sante Fe? Las Vegas?

    I’ll be back

    Diana B

Diana on May 19, 2009 at 9:42 pm
  34. Well, I “googled” a little bit— I’m Totally Confused!!!!

    1. Forget about Las Vegas— don’t think that there is a Bear population there at all
    2. I think that the ” Clue” is a “Hint” to the city—- but NOT THE NAME of the City–but, could be wrong
3.I got a List of ALL American Cities— the ONLY city that I could find, close to this is: CHANDLER, ARIZONA.

    4. The Black Bear is the ONLY bear species there— Oranges do Grow There (they have some kind of orange picking festival)—- but no connections to Ivory or Tee pee— nothing substantial. That’s as far as I got

Anyways— I kind of feel— Where do I start???

I’m just thinking— someone said that the Black Bear is the State Animal for N.M.— if that’s the case— maybe start here ( I can’t believe I’m even thinking this)

When Mary said, ” DB Coop you are so close, but so far away”—- that is really sticking to me, for some reason

  35. Is this MARY’s COLOR BLACK tie-in? Not a color, in the sense of a flag, or school colors, but a family name, so it remains to be seen….

The Black family (1772-1797), who were the founders of Blacksburg, Virginia. Samuel Black, whose family settled in STAUNTON, Virginia, bought 600 acres of land in the Draper’s Meadow area for his sons John and William in 1772. Smithfield Plantation, built in approximately 1774, sits on the original Draper’s Meadow site.

On Samuel Black’s death in 1792, the land was divided between his sons. John Black’s property covered much of what is today Virginia Tech’s central campus and William Black’s property became most of the central downtown area of present-day BLACKSBURG.

Called the “Queen City” of the Shenandoah Valley, tourism is one of Staunton’s biggest draws. It’s home to a theatrical company at the Blackfriars Playhouse, which is the only existing replica of Shakespeare’s Blackfriars Theatre. The Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library is also located in Staunton.

For more info about Staunton, VA: http://www.visitstaunton.com/ According to ‘Southern Life’, “Staunton is the perfect place to base any exploration of the [Shenandoah] Valley.”

And YES, a river runs through it: “what makes this river unique is…it has two names. At each end of the river it is the Roanoke, but the part of it that runs through South Central Virginia is known as the Staunton River.”

As a side note, Blackstone is a town in Nottoway County, Virginia, but of much lesser interest for our purposes, I think.

I don’t know if the Black family connection brings us any closer to the 2010 Dream Home location, or if we’re still out here in the wilderness, sitting in the dark.

DBCoop on May 19, 2009 at 10:51 pm
  36. so obviously black bears are a significant trait of the new area. By the way, that is a HUGE black bear. I had black bears in my yard all the time growing up, but they were never that big, even the mama ones. Or maybe they didn’t seem that big because we saw them all the time. Who knows.

How is this connected to a place? Marie Miller, I would doubt that that pic is four courners because I live in Provo (just outside of Salt Lake City, UT) right now and that grass does not look like here. There are a lot more trees, shrubs, mountains, rocks.

Counter revolution? counter culture? Any places famous for that?

JessiRose on May 20, 2009 at 12:13 am
  37. The place also looks too dry to be in VA. I always thought of VA as more green. Maybe it is New Mexico. when did the spanish conquer that area? I Thought it was around the 17th century.

JessiRose on May 20, 2009 at 12:17 am
  38. okay, just did a little research on NM. Didn’t see any pics of similar landscapes as what is in the pic, but I did find that although the spanish came in the 1540s and Pope’s rebellion was in the 1680s, there were lots of towns being established around 1607 or 1627.

Black bear is the state animal. There is biking. The state has the 3rd largest indian population.

JessiRose on May 20, 2009 at 12:25 am
  39. counter revolution= Pope’s rebellion 1680

JessiRose on May 20, 2009 at 12:27 am
  40. Well that eliminates the two water photos from yesterday. Congrats to Albuquerque, NM! That was easy.

Jennifer Thompson on May 20, 2009 at 12:37 am
  41. Ok, the best I can guess would the word be color & the color blue? Could those views be of a lake like Lake Tahoe in Nevada or Flathead Lake in Montana.

Denise on May 20, 2009 at 1:15 am
  42. Could the clue be CaesarStone? They make counter tops and have several locations in Calif.

Mary on May 20, 2009 at 3:43 am
  43. I don’t think they found a location yet and are playing this guessing game with us until they do. I mean, look at the type of clues we are getting!!! Someone’s EYES!!!!!!!

lovelykitty on May 20, 2009 at 4:12 am
  44. I just read that in VA, Black bears live in the mountains. Blue Ridge Mountains perhaps? Blue is a color. So why not?

Trista - Upstate NY on May 20, 2009 at 4:27 am
  45. The picture is from Chascar’s fall trip 2005 through Yellowstone National Park. Hummmm, could it be that it’s the Black Hills of South Dakota??? Gorgeous place but I was snowed in going through there in the end of May with snow going over the top roof of my car!!

Rhonda on May 20, 2009 at 5:43 am
  46. JESSIROSE –Of course, I’m kind of hoping that it’s not New Mexico ( I want Virginia or at least, Mass. so bad—-) So I’m glad that your info. doesn’t line up. If anything, I was thinking, possibly Sante Fe? And when I was googling a little last night— something brought me to Yellow Stone too.

I’m confused over this, because this picture right away didn’t strike me as Virginia.

We all have to work on this today– from time to time.

Diana on May 20, 2009 at 7:04 am
  47. DB COOP+= I’m SO GLAD about what you wrote. Because at first, I thought of BLACKSBURG!!! I was afraid that I was turning this into, “what I want” VS. “what it will be”.

    1. Virginia Tech U. is in BLACKSBURG— Their Mascot Color is Burnt Orange— When I saw a pic of the football stadium (aerial view)— all you can see is Orange

    2. The school is not far from ROANOKE– Roanoke is still in Central Virginia; along with the other cities- Charlottesville, Orange, and Richmond

    3. Virginia Tech U. also has a Structure at the School of Physical Sciences — It is a Statue of a CONCH SHELL— I read about this, but didn’t actually see the picture

“The CONCH SHELL Shaped Structure on the right houses the lecture theaters … An image from the VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY (Blacksburg, VA )

    http://www.phys.vt.edu/showcase/showcase.html

    4. V.T.U. also did a Research Project and coalition about protecting the Black Bear Population

Let’s See— But I think that we have to keep an Open Mind

But I still think— America is Beautiful with so much to see— and each region has it’s own natural beauty

  48. The Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) Indian Tribe, made first ethno-historic contact with the English in 1607/1608 in what is now Nottoway County. We were referred to as Mangoak, or Mengwe, by the Algonquian Tribes and later in 1650, per the diary entries of Edward Bland, referred to again by the Algonquian Tribes as “Nadawa,” which soon reverted to Nottoway. In our native Iroquoian Tongue (Dar-sun-ke) we call ourselves CHE-RO-EN-HA-KA – People at the Fork of the Stream.

We Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) lodged and hunted in the southeastern part of Virginia along the Nottoway and Blackwater River. Our hunting territory extended into North Carolina along the Chowan River as far as Albemarle Sound.
