Tuesday’s Clue: Can You Crack It?

What’s the connection between the American black bear and
the HGTV Dream Home 2010 location? Photo by chascar.
You think I’d let a day slip by without a clue? Come on!
I am thinking of a word. Starts with c and ends with r. You’ll find it somewhere in the HGTV Green Home 2009 Master Bathroom feature article. Figure it out and then tell me how it relates to the HGTV Dream Home 2010 location.

I just read that in VA, Black bears live in the mountains. Blue Ridge Mountains perhaps? Blue is a color. So why not?
Diana B- I just read your post! Didn’t mean to repeat! What about Smith Mountain Lake?
OK, I have an Idea—- probably dumb, but I thought that I’d throw this one out. I think that us Bloggers should get together, and do a ” Bloggers Joint Research Project” Today.
We should pick other areas that we haven’t been focusing on. Just for the Heck, and Why not?? It could used as a Process of Elimination.
Few Ideas that came to mind:
1. BIG SUR or somewhere in CALIFORNIA— I WILL DO THIS ONE—- I will be very busy today with other things— but can get back with this info. Late, late tonight
2. COLORADO ( COLOR– ado)
3. UTAH—– maybe Marie Miller can do this one— Marie, are you availabe today???
4. ARIZONA
5. NEW MEXICO — SANTE FE area— but Jessi Rose said that she really didn’t find “linking” pictures— but found some info. that could connect
6. YELLOW STONE area
ANY VOLUNTEERS???????
So far— we’ve seen pictures of:
1. NY, MAINE, VIRGINIA
2. Pic from VERMONT
3. Pic from WEST VIRGINIA
4. Then Pics Again- NEW MEXICO, MASS, and VIRGINIA
5. Maybe we cannot totally rely on the pictures, I don’t know.
I think that it will DEFINITELY be somewhere where there is either a lake, ocean, or some sort of water—- there have been too many clues towards “water front”
Let me Know—- I’m still Hoping for Virginia
Diana B
Maybe we are to link the BLACK bear and COLOR? As in color black and past clue of CROW’S Pasture Cape Cod?? Black crow…..holy hannah banana, these clues can be linked to all three states! ROFL
I wonder how many people sit with Mary laughing as they read these posts together?? Not funny, not funny making us suffer so…….wearing our fingertips off!
Smith Mountain Lake in Va would be the perfect location. Crossing my fingers!
THE BLACK PEARL INN
11 & 18 Pearl Street
Provincetown, MA 02657 – 800-761-1016 or 508-487-0302
Black, the color, also takes care of the ivory clue too, pearls…..
Don’t worry “bear phobics” Black bears are almost a daily occurence in our yard here in NH. They are more afraid of you than you are of them. Still think southwest!!!!!
OK—- if anything is up to the “Bloggers Joint Research Project”—-
These are 2 More to Add to the List=
A. NEVADA— LAKE TAHOE
B. MONTANA
1.BIG SUR or somewhere in CALIFORNIA— I WILL DO THIS ONE—- I will be very busy today with other things— but can get back with this info.
I’d hate to re-hash this one with DB Coop
6. YELLOW STONE area
I’m getting teary-eyed, Virginia is for Lovers— I just hope that it will still be true!!!!
Diana B
Diana B, thanks for filling in the details about Blacksburg’s Virginia Tech University. The school colors of primarily orange (with maroon) could certainly link to our clues, along with the Black family name.
I was beginning to worry that MARY was trying to send us even further afield, to WEST Virginia, where the Black Bear is the state animal, and they have an annual Black Walnut festival—however, I’m trying to keep in mind that the three photo “options” she gave us are of the James River in Virginia, Sandia Mountains of New Mexico and Cape Cod, Massachusetts—and I’m holding her to those three states of consideration.
Nor am I willing to write off the Dogwood clue, which is the state flower and tree of Virginia.
The question is, must we stay along the James River, or is the clue of a wider scope, as in ocean, mountain, or river view?
Maybe if we let MARY win a game of bocce ball with us bloggers, she’d toss out more clues?!
I’m with Ed. I’m going with ‘corner’ as it refers to the four corners of AZ, UT, NM, & CO. As I chose Ouray County, CO yesterday, I’ll say that corner is the word, and the state is Colorado.
Color is in that word too
COLORado
Early to work today…….I will miss my blogger buddies <3
Went to Chascar’s streaming photos on Flikr and found this shot was taken on a trip that took the photographer through the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone as well as Mt Rushmore. May have been in other spots too. So can’t say just the Dakotas. Maybe Wyoming? Still think southwest.
Well everyone I an still hoping for Virginia Charlottesville area
BUT just maybe another in North Carolina “BEAR LAKE RESERVE” just outside of (C ashie Rs and Sylvia) that would be a wonderful vacation home or permanent resident
here is a web sight to check out
http://www.bearlakereserve.com/
http://bearlakereserve.com/ownership-opportunities.html
I have a big feeling that other than the BLACK bear the photo is not the clue…. just intuition.
If James River is a clue it dosen’t have to be the actual river It could represent the equipment company which has offices in North Carolina and Virginia and South Carolina
DB COOP= I agree with you. Remember:
1. The FIRST picture= Maine, NY, and Virginia.
2. A few pictures thrown in now and then— West Virginia, Vermont, and speculation of Lake Tahoe
3. RECENT PICTURE= New Mexico, and Massachusetts (again) and Virginia (again)— with Strong Leads to either a Lake, River or Ocean
But, keep the info. coming on other states too—-( NM, NV, Yellowstone, UT, CO, AZ, MT, CA ) we’ll see what we come up with—-
We can’t go on a Wild Goose Chase all over the country— but a clue here and there will only help
still hoping for a Plantation in Virginia and taking part in Equestrian Shows— and I was just ready to unpack an old book on Thomas Jefferson too—- and ordering video’s on the Civil War—- at the moment, I will place these idea’s on hold
Diana B
CathyLemar: You come up with great associations, like: Black Bear being New Mexico’s state animal; the Orange National Airport…maybe you’re even right about the CRACK IT being a clue?
Ed: You did find a lot of Corners in Virginia! And, I did like the idea of the Four Corners; good research finding all the Caesar Chavez Schools in New Mexico & I liked the Colors of Courage documentary filmed in Albuquerque (always had trouble spelling), New Mexico, that you discovered.
Lessie: You are so right…we are locked in a ‘corner!!’ I really liked your comments to Mary…and, we have all been out on Coop’s limb too long…it’s only a matter of time before that limb snaps!!
TSB: Canister…I missed that one & really having a hard time with associating it..did you come up with something?
JessiRose: Thank you for sharing your information about Utah.
Diana: Your information and clues astound me…good job…I’m now thinking we all like VIRGINIA as the pick for the state…now it’s all about which city! I’m still liking the idea of Virginia Beach, or maybe Jamestown….especially since Jamestown, located on Jamestown Island in the Virginia Colony, was founded on May 14, 1607! I’m thinking that the numbers 1607 definitely give it away? Oh yeah, black bears were abundant in the vicinity of Jamestown when settlers arrived in 1607!!
Lynn Coggin: I do blieve that you & Coop should comprise a book of poems…you certainly have the gift of verse. I’m certainly not as poetic as the two of you, but I had a little fun trying:
It won’t be long ‘till Mary is quite through
With all the clues, from orange to blue;
If we continue to search each & every clue;
We are bound to find the Green Home that HGTV drew!!!
It has been a journey of Cathy, Ed, Lessie, Lynn & Coop’s wits;
To find a place where the black bear fits;
There have been many guesses from bloggers to date;
But so far the whereabouts of the GreenHome we must wait!
We have traveled by each & every corner of the ocean, byway & sea,
Over hills, over mountains, and all the plains that are few;
In hopes to find where our Green Home site shall be,
But now we are ready ’cause it’s time for Mary & HGTV to give us the site to view!!!
Even though I had a great time trying with my poem, I do believe I will rely on other bloggers to show their poetic skills…I better stick to blogging before I get a flogging!!!
MARIE MILLER= Excellent Poem— I do not have poetic skills at all. Hopefully Mary will post that poem, too, when she finally Posts the Blog with the Announcement!!!
Diana B
Christine: Funny you should mention that…’cause I did at one time have it go through my head that the eyes clue came from Mount Rushmore…but then there are four presidents’ eyes to consider!!
Can Mary’s clue “CRACK IT” come from the association to crab? There is a Crab Orchard, in Raleigh County, West Virginia?
Ok Sleuths & Dreamers! For whatever it may be worth (probably not much) I did find a Black (color) Walnut (crack!) Road in Richmond VA near the James River. Very pretty houses there.
Now that I’m convinced that we are talking about Virginia being the site for the next dream home, take a look at this photo taken in Carlsbad, New Mexico:
http://www.frommers.com/destinations/slideshow.cfm?destid=234&p=6
I guess what interested me the most was the likeness of the trees in HGTV’s photo & this one?
How about Tenn, somewhere near the great smokey mountain rane..Black bears roam in the National Park..Got to check out some nearby areas.
How about Tenn, somewhere near the great smokey mountain range…Black bears roam in the National Park..Got to check out some nearby areas.
I guess one thing my poem definitely lacked, was the correct site…All the while saying Green Home…I was meaning Dream Home…am I confused? Jumping back and forth from Greaming and Dreaming I suppose…sorry about that!!!!
MARIE MILLER= hmmm, Very Good!!! You are an Excellent Researcher— I don’t know. That picture on that site looks Identical to the picture on this blog—- it even looks like the Same Bear!!! Of course, you know, I hope that it isn’t true—-
Well, Big Sur is out of the question. Big Sur is known for “Hiking”— and that’s not biking— so that’s out!!!
Diana B
Marie Miller…
You’re a poet,
and you don’t know it!
Phew…you guys have all been very busy! I think I’ve learned more history reading these blogs than I ever remember learning in grade school American History classes;))
Anyway, I think someone already mentioned this but, here we go…
There is a Blackbeard (Black Bear, color?!?!) Festival in downtown Hampton, Virginia. Here is the link:
http://www.blackbeardpiratefestival.com If you go to the ‘Festival Overview’ it will give you a history of Blackbeard and show a connection with the James River and Hampton area of Virginia.
Also, Blackbeard operated in many coastal waters; it was difficult for larger vessels to engage him in battle. Two smaller hired sloops were therefore put under the command of Lieutenant Robert Maynard, with instructions from Spotswood to hunt down and destroy Blackbeard, offering a reward of £100, and smaller sums for the lesser crew members. Maynard sailed from James River on November 11, 1718.
In addition, by current estimates, more than 600,000 American Black Bears are living today on this continent with 5,000 to 6,000 of those in Virginia.
So, that’s all for now but I will continue to be sleuth my way through the day!

Sending this again because I had more than one link and was ‘awaiting moderation’ so I thought I’d try it in two different posts…

Living the Dream…again!
I just enjoy all these posts when I have time off…Im not a good detective, some of your answers are awsome..Ok, here goes another dumb one from me, lol…How about upstate NY, adirondack mounts. Bears and quartz are found there.
Thanks for your post, Lynn, on the Blackbeard Festival in Hampton, VA. Unfortunately, I’d posted that several days ago, and had no response and no apparent interest from MARY…so I guess we’re still left “hanging”.
Now, Marie Miller, do you think you could get that Black bear in MARY’s photo to crack the code and share the location connection with us? Perhaps read him some of your poetry? At this point, I can “bearly” contain my frustration!
JeanieB, good find…Black Walnut Road in Richmond could crack this thing wide open.
Grasping at straws maybe, but we need every bit of hope we can find these days as we stalk the Dream Home location.
When it comes to MARY’s clues, they remind me of two proverbs: “what goes around, goes in circles, & as we sew, so shall we weep.”
(somehow, they don’t sound quite right…)
How about Lake Placid or Lake George NY..Im just having some fun until I have to go to work today.
Coop…what do you think about this?
http://www.manta.com/coms2/dnbcompany_25ht9
Year started: 2008…that works.
Chesapeake, Virginia…?
Living the Dream!
I was thinking quartz mines, ceasar stone isn’t it made from quartz…So I was thinking of areas were there are bears and some quartz, plus the color themes of blue and green in the house,
Here’s a “For Sale” home on Black Walnut Road, in the high-end River Road corridor of the James River (Richmond, VA). This 4,700 square foot home on nearly 3/4 of an acre is in a 3 year old gated community.
http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/144-Black-Walnut_Richmond_VA_23238_1107584975
The Richmond, VA River Road area certainly looks like a promising Dream Home site.
Anyway, I’ve lost all sense of time with this endless research, so now I’m off to exercise my body with a long walk, and let my weary mind take a rest.
You go DB COOP, go—- I’m STILL ROOTING for VIRGINIA—– At least you are giving me some encouragement——-
Have a nice walk— and a nice day. Right now, I’m not taking part in any more “blogging activities” until I see another sign towards VIRGINIA, or at least, MASSACHUSETTS
Diana B
if the word Mary is thinking of is color, could it be that Black bears in the Eastern U.S. are mostly black, while Black bears in the Western states are various colors of brown, black, and cinnamon…so the location is in one of the Eastern states?
Bear
Ursus americanus
The American black bear is the smallest of the three bears species found in North America, and are found only in North America. Black bears have short, non-retractable claws that give them an excellent tree-climbing ability.
Go Wild!Help protect “Teddy Bears” and their homes! Adopt a Black Bear and you’ll not only give a great gift for the special wildlife lovers in your life, you’ll also be protecting black bears.
Black bear fur is usually a uniform color except for a brown muzzle and light markings that sometimes appear on their chests. Eastern populations are usually black in color while western populations often show brown, cinnamon, and blond coloration in addition to black. Black bears with white-bluish fur are known as Kermode (glacier) bears and these unique color phases are only found in coastal British Columbia, Canada
Marie…I posted earlier that Orange International is NOT an airport…I was wrong
And that would have really made me believe in NM…..but alas…sorry, it is a clothing place in NM.
Did someone mention American Dogwood is supported by the Garden Club of Virginia and the Garden Club of Norfolk, the flower of the American dogwood (Cornus florida) was adopted by the Commonwealth of Virginia as the official floral emblem of the Commonwealth on March 6, 1918.
keeping up DBCoop’s theme of black walnut
American black walnut
The species native to North America, American black walnut, was first known as Virginia walnut and was believed to have been planted in England in 1656.
I really hope that it’s VIRGINIA, or at least, MASSACHUSETTS—– and NOT New Mexico. I’ve got to tell you this— my Dad told me another story after lunch— and OMG, he doesn’t know about this blog. (He may have an idea, becuz’ I’m always talking about a Dream Home)
Anyways– he’s planning on planting a new Aloe Vera plant and a few herbs. He told me about the time, years ago, when we had a Cactus. He explained that when he went to cut a branch off of the Cactus, a Lot of the Cactus Juice Squirted him right in the Eye– and he said that it was So Painful, and he had to go to the Emergency Room !! He said quote and unquote, ” CACTUS Plants are like Spiteful, Mean Plants”
So there— another reason why it shouldn’t be New Mexico. Cactus Plants are Spiteful, Mean, and Nasty, Nasty, Nasty—-
I hope that we get Another Clue Soon Leading to VIRGINIA!!!!!
Adios Amigos ( for now )
Diana B
Well my better half said the Dream Home will be in Utah. She doesn’t follow the blog, but she is psychic. Maybe it will be at the Black Bear Resort on the Black Lake between Idaho & Utah. The lake, which used to be called Black Bear Lake, is noted for its beautiful blue & green colors. These colors are a result of the dissolved limestone in the lake. I don’t know for sure, but when she has these hunches, she is usually right??
Can we go back to the eyes for a minute? Check out the bicture of Bobby Scott – US Representative from Richmond. Looks like a pretty close match to me. (The second eye) I’d love to hear what you all think.

Hi there! Okay, here I go again…
Chickahominy also known as “the Chick” is a river in the southeastern portion of the U.S. state of Virginia. The river rises about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Richmond, Virginia and flows southeast and south to the James River. The river was named after the Chickahominy Indian tribe who lived near the river when it was claimed by English colonists in 1607. In 1607, Captain John Smith, one of the Jamestown settlers, sailed up the Chickahominy in the hope that it would prove to be a passage to the Pacific. There, he was captured by warriors of the Chickahominy tribe and taken to meet Chief Powhatan, an event that led to his legendary rescue by Pocahontas.
With broad expanses of open marshes, cypress trees along much of its shoreline, and a diversity of fish species choose from, the Chickahominy River provides the angler with tidal river fishing at its finest.
Maybe it’s one of these sold lots….http://www.realhornsby.com/waterfront.htm
There is a York River State Park in Williamsburg which has Hiking, bicycle and bridle trails. More than 25 miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails provide access to the parks beautiful and diverse natural areas. There are six bicycle trails, some of which share use with equestrians and hikers. Two are exclusively mountain bike – a six mile single track mountain bike trail (Marl Ravine Trail), which is for advanced riders. Laurel Glen Trail is a 2-mile beginner/intermediate mountain bike trail. The half-mile Black Bear Run Trail connects the other two mountain bike trails.
In addition, there is the Capital Bike Trail. This path is currently eight miles long from Jamestown Settlement to the Chickahominy River Bridge.
Living the Dream!
Marie Miller – If DH09 is any indication, I think you will find the location before anyone else. Great find. My first impression when I saw Mary’s photo was NM. The picture in your link bears
a resemblence to Mary’s picture, however, zoo animals’ habitats are not representative of where the zoo is located.
Most clues point to VA, or most bloggers are hoping VA. If not NY, I am hoping VA too(closer to family and better climate).
Humm….
Maybe ‘Cedar’? Is that a cedar tree “CRACKED” in the picture behind the bear. Goodness only knows where DH 2010 is going to be. Hurry and tell us Coop! I am about to CRACK already!
The “color” or the “counter” in the master bedroom is sand. Sounds like the beach to me. Now I have to work on the Bear part. Virginia (bear)Beach (sand). I think this is it Virginia Beach.
does black have anything to do with part of the name of a university. not my best guess.
