Builder Talks Framing

Hi all,

Yesterday, our friends at HGTVPro launched some cool features about the Building of HGTV Dream Home 2010. The builder shares his insights about the foundation and framing process, and there’s also a pretty sweet photo gallery with images of the foundation being poured and framing being installed. I am proud to say I now know what a monolithic slab is.

Read the features, then pop back here to share your thoughts.

  2. Marie Miller, my art interests are simple, not as if I'm involved in collecting the Grand Masters! I have mostly original oils, some serigraphs, embossed metal etchings, silk stichings, art prints, even an amazing crushed duck eggshell landscape bought in Vietnam. My artwork in Phuket is limited to four framed contemporary prints.

    Happy Labor Day to all.

Not to badger you at all Marie, but don't miss checking into the GREEN Home webcam page!

  3. Marie Miller: Thank you for your update on Artis Lane. The last I remember her was when she unveiled a statue of the current mayor of Detroit, Coleman Young. That was so many years ago. Oh, then there was the Oprah episode. Here's how I remember how lucky I was. We were walking through some kind of industrial fair, and I saw this beautiful lady sitting at a small booth with a display of a small boy's portrait that I couldn't take my eyes off. She noticed and asked if I would like her to do my portrait. I sank in to the chair and in less than 30 minutes (or so it seemed), I had the result. Thank God I had the sense to have it properly framed. Most money I've spent on framing, but well worth it.

  4. Coop: Loved your description of a crushed duck eggshell landscape from Vietnam. Love using organic media in art.
I purchased this very small landscape art on the "Garden Island". It is made by the natural bark of the banana tree. The bark is peeled and dried, there is no varnish or color added, only the natural elements of sun, wind, and rain. The bark is then selected to create volcanoes, mountains, and seascapes. I love it, because you have use your imagination to see its beauty.

    • Just goes to show that there is such great beauty in nature, and sometimes, with the right kind of approach from mankind, beauty can be created from what nature provides. Your artwork sounds delightful.

  7. I am wondering if it is possible to view the time lapse construction camera in real time. I am eager to see the changes and it seems no new shots are added for a week or two at a time- and then it is for a few more days only. Please, please, please!!!

  8. Hi ho, hi ho, it's back to work we'll go—but for the time being, we can enjoy friends and family visits, and our Dream-land and Green-land blogs.

    Cheers!

  9. I haven't left yet guys! Couldn't sleep…seems to be a problem I have anticipating a journey, so I'm up and ready at 4:30 a.m.! So, I just wanted to pop in to say my proper adieu until Thursday! Did you all catch Design Stars last night?

Coop: Your art sounds deliciously interesting! Crushed duck eggshell landscape from Vietnam is exciting and interesting!! It is my understanding that the process of creating a lacquer painting is tedious and time-consuming. Duck eggs are roasted over a grill, crushed and placed into a chestnut lacquer matrix on a marine plywood substrate. This composite is then rubbed by hand into a smooth polished finish under running water. This process takes 50 days to complete from start to finish. WOW! Would love to see your creative piece! Would the artist be Nguyen Gia Tri?

MarieMiller on September 7, 2009 at 11:42 am
    • I'm not sure of the artist, Marie. I'll run over to Vietnam and check into it—just give me a few days to get back to you!

  10. Katydid: I'm not that familiar with art from the natural bark of banana trees, but I do like the Lavalavas that are a hand woven fabric made with local fibers of bananas. The Lavalava is wrapped around the hips and secured at the waist with a cord. I purchased many kikepas (or Lavalava) when I was in Hawaii for gifts! No zippers, no buttons, incredibly inexpensive, and you don't have to accessorize!! They are fabulous!!!!

Okay my Soiree Sister, back on Thursday!!!

  11. Question : so far after going through the entire site ( at least I think) I have not found anything on why the use of conventional framing and stucco over ply-wood??? Not that I wouldn't mind winning the house, but I would have thought that real (modern ) adobe would add quite a bit to this!! Otherwise it seems like an oversize bloody tract home?!?!?!?! Once again still wouldn't mind winning it.

  12. Would it be possible to fix the time lapse photography page so that it starts at the beginning of the month or week or whatever and moves forward? Now, when you click on it, it starts out on Aug 27th, then goes to Aug 25th, and I didn't let it go any further than that because it's very frustrating. It has not worked right since the beginning, always going backwards or jumping around. I would really enjoy using this feature but get frustrated when it is not consistent and even goes backward instead of forward. Otherwise the house looks really great so far and it's very exciting to see it all come together before our very eyes.

  13. Yes, I did watch Design Star last night. For those of you who do not know who Kathy Griffin is, I can understand your confusion. Being a fan of hers, I got it. She did give Antonio suggestions, said she had three paid team employees who each wanted their own space. He did that brilliantly. As to the tiny "conference" space, I see that as becoming a coffee making haven, and when Kathy wants them to gather, she will summon them via speaker phone and they will meet in her comfy cushioned lounge area. What a cute couple Kathy and Antonio would make. I hope sparks fly. At least one thing,….Kathy will have a wealth of material for her next show.
Lonnie: I was really getting tired or her repeating design on the walls. Nice lady and I wish her luck.
Dan: He has a lot of talent, but I fear his giggles could easily resolve into tears. Get a grip, Dan, take a deep breath and focus.
Next week's challenge should be so exciting. I can't wait. But, of course, I will.
Thanks, HGTV for letting me vent here. Any hope for suggestion of listing "last" on the threads?

Katydid on September 7, 2009 at 11:44 pm
  14. In regards to Design Star (excuse us for a moment, MARY, while we talk shop here) Kathy Griffin is great. I thought Antonio did a decent enough job on the workroom, but kind of dropped the ball on the accessories and scale.

LOL, Katydid—while Dan is my favorite to win because of his engaging personality AND his creative design AND broad-ranging hands-on work skills, he WILL have to work on his nervousness. But then, being "on-camera" is daunting for MOST people. It takes a little time to gain the on-screen persona that professionals have. Otherwise, I find Dan's hosting skills good. Of course, I have to say that I don't have any problem with his laugh, I think it's a light-hearted natural part of his personality. Some folks DO mind however, and he'll have to work on that, whether he has his own show on HGTV or is picked up for another on-screen show/network by folks who can see his real potential.

  15. Hi Coop! I posted a comment to you about Design Star on the Green Home blog so I won't bore you with it again. ;)

On another note, love, love, love the color they painted this Dream Home…a nice warm tan that blends with the landscape oh so delicately…love it! I was afraid it would have a mauve tone to it…don't love that too much so I am happy to see what I believe is the final color. BTW, how did they do that? Is it paint or some sort of skim coat to the exterior? Hmmm….did I miss that part somewhere?

  16. P.S. Katydid – Love your attention to the Design Start details! I, also, love Kathy Griffin ever since she was on a Seinfeld episode years ago. Hope all is well!

  17. Lynn Coggin, I am sure that is a stucco color coat on the Dream home. If you look at the September 1 picures, you can see the the stucco mixer in the picture & the masons applying the color coat to the home. I am glad they are updating the Cam Pictures more regularly now. One can definitely tell what the house looks like now. Anxious to see the landscaping & drive way treatment.

  18. The photos of the Dream Home are looking pretty great. Now that the outside of the home is almost complete, I cannot wait to see what the inside is going to look like. Plus, all of the great furniture and decorating that goes along with it.

  19. While you were away, Marie Miller, I also took the opportunity to head out for a few days. It took a lot of hours in the air, and a quick turnaround, but I did confirm that my crushed duck eggshell artwork was not done by Nguyen Gia Tri, unfortunately. (Actually, I didn't really go to Vietnam for the answer, of course, but for an overnight trip to Washington DC for personal business.) I just looked at the artwork and found no signature, so authenticating the artist wasn't really TOO difficult!

I like the desert color of the Dream Home, but personally would have preferred just a touch deeper shade of the sand. Then again, it blends in well with the landscape, and the lighter the color, the better it reflects the sun's rays—an important consideration in desert terrain.

  24. HI Mary,

It's really cool, how can I join in that HGTV can help me to build my dream house?

  25. I'd like the builder to comment more on the systems of the home. Especially the solar system. What is it used for? Electric? For water heating purposes for the radiant floor? Very interesting. I await the video.
