Fireplaces, a Water Feature and More

Good morning, bloggers.

Let the HGTV Dream Home 2010 season begin! Thank you for your well wishes and support. By now, you know how much I love this job — I promise to keep the information flowing. I am here to represent every super fan of the HGTV Dream Home.

With that being said, I have answers to a few questions.

Someone by the name of “guest” asked if HGTV Dream Home 2010 will feature a fireplace. Hold on to your seats because there won’t be just one but FOUR fireplaces! Two will be located inside the home and two will be situated outside the home. Whoever wins the HGTV Dream Home 2010 will have plenty of cozy places to read or make some yummy s’mores.

Katydid, there are plans in the works for a water feature. (No, Marie Miller, it won’t be a moat to block out snakes, but I like the way you think!) The Dream Team is being pretty hush-hush about it, but I will dig into the details and let you know what I find out. It’s destined to be beautiful.

That’s all for now. What else do you want to know?

Your super fan,
Gail

  2. Wow!!! What a great picture Gail!!! You look beautiful, as always!! Thank you for the update!!! I knew that there would be more than 1 fireplace!!!! I mean you are in New Mexico!!! (remember the Pinon Wood, Jack & Linda, please) I can't wait to see the water feature and if one of the outdoor fireplace's can be used to cook….pizzas…..!!!! I hope the second fireplace indoors is located in the Master Bedroom!!! How romantic!! Love life by living green and the dream!!!

  3. It's too curious how the outside fireplaces will be given into the landscape, feel, look and keeping weather elements at bay in all times of the year, wind and blowing sand?

I so look forward to seeing how it unfolds with living green, & bringing in water & fire elements. Just love it!

  4. Hi Gail;
just want to say your picture looks great. Also love the hair style with body, and great make-up job. Now I like the idea of four fireplaces, but why four?. Not only will this years HGTV Dream Home 2010 be beautiful, but also unforgettable.

Thanks so much for the lastest information it's all great news but I hope they can and will do something about the snakes.

I still want to know how tall is the front door and the exterior color of the windows.

    • Good point? Will it be a divergence to blending or as so many do a contrast?

  7. Is the double entrance into the Master Bed going to be a fp in the middle of the entrance in being able to view the fp from MB & sunrise room?

If this is where the 2nd fp is? I would personally like to see fp be on the right. So you can incorporate a double entry into MB to the left to give a large birth access into MB space while not impeding access with flow, large pieces of furniture, or coming from MB bath to or from MB. You would not want to pass closely to the fp hot metal, glass, and the blower in entering this space.

The only other place I might see with floor plan given might be is putting the 2nd fp is might be over the center of the wall behind the MB garden tub. Centered over garden bath to be revered in MB bath and in the MB.

Maybe, that is why there is that large opening left in that wall?

Hope to see soon how it transpires?

I also would like to see floor to ceiling wood poles incorporated that are more used with territorial style. A nice feature to go hand in hand with wood headers being utilized.
Like we use columns & pillars that give more spacial drama.

  8. Gail: Your picture was so beautiful I almost forgot to read the rest of your post. FOUR fireplaces…..two in, two out. Renee, maybe we will have our pizza oven after all. And, oh, happy day, a water feature that is a mystery.
I can wait for that. Thank you HGTV designers and all involved with building this amazing home.
PFG has certainly been studying the floor plans. Too much for me to follow. I just remember that it was a very versatile plan that could be adjusted for the lucky family that wins it.

Katydid on October 5, 2009 at 11:03 pm
    • Hi Katydid, Yes I looked at the floor plans once, yep more than twice. I was trying to imagine where the 2nd fp was identified clearly & it's not clearly described as 1 in foyer. It's there just have to guess? Thanks, for noticing my comments. I guess others, other than myself, read them after all, & it all good. ;O) Have a good day.

What are your thoughts with the outside water feature?

      I have a few, myself

  9. NEWS FLASH fellow bloggers. The Dream Cam has been updated. The driveway pavers are in. There's landscaping. There are some fantastic pictures!

EdinOregon on October 6, 2009 at 2:14 am
  10. Thank you for the update! I have been pouring over the floor plan. My question is regarding the home office. I have a closet in my home office, we had an electric outlet installed there as well. This way the printers and other equipment are hidden in the closet, along with all of the stuff that comes along with a office. I just can't imagine a home office without a closet. Could you ask the builder to consider including even a modest closet? Tell him I said "Pretty Please!" Thank you!

  11. thanks for the update Gail…will the DH have skylights? after looking at the plans, the area around the fireplace won't have much of a light source from windows, so a skylight in that area would be nice ;) , and the master closet will have windows, or is that a skylight feature I see along the back wall? thanks for answering our questions

    @sagg9909 on October 6, 2009 at 2:52 am
  12. Okay, it looks like the second fireplace will be in the Master Bedroom… is that not a "flute" drawing that I see…. I hope… Though it could also be a clean burn fireplace, not needing an exhaust. You never know.. But, I love that it is all coming along so well!! Also, it looks to me that one fireplace outdoor is for a lounging area and the other for a "kitchen" set up.. Katydid, it may be me just getting our hopes up. Ed, I will head over to the camera update, thank you. Love the Sunrise room next to the Master, so I can hang out in the morning with my coffee!! It is getting exciting!! Every year it seems to go by faster and faster!!! Love life by living green!!

reneelovesgreen on October 6, 2009 at 2:58 am
  13. I agree with you Renee. There is a fireplace in the master bedroom. There also appears to be one in the corner of the casita. With the rough prints they show us I can't really tell where the other one outside of the house will be. I imagine it will be on or off of the back patio. It may just be one of those free standing Mexican Style Fireplaces that look like a big olla with a hole in the front. I wish they would give us access to detailed construction drawings. The Dream cam let's us see the solar panels on the roof and a few other features, but the garage and back yard area are not visible. Oh well I guess that's why we keep coming back for more information.

EdinOregon on October 6, 2009 at 5:41 am
    • Ed, I was wondering if that was a fireplace in the casita!!!??? They say that it is going to be 4 fireplaces…so it could end up 2 in the house, 1 in the casita and 1 outside!!! I am sure that they are waiting to surprise us!!!

reneelovesgreen on October 7, 2009 at 8:25 pm
  14. Dear Gail: Thank you for the introduction to the HGTV Dream Home 2010 season! It is always such an exciting event & the hopes of winning arouses our expectation, interest, and desire of something unobtainable or beyond our reach!!!

Your photo is absolutely fabulous & the love of this job shows in your beautiful face & smile. Thank you for keeping the information flowing!

I am overwhelmed that there will be not just one, but FOUR fireplaces! The two that will be situated outside the home, will be a fantastic way to entertain and/or just find a warm & inviting place to cozy up in the cool nights in New Mexico! Not to speak of sharing a glass of Solera Reserva Sherry (which of course will be purchased at one of the annual wine festivals of New Mexico ) along with some yummy s’mores. YES!!!

Marie Miller on October 6, 2009 at 11:52 am
  15. reneelovesgreen: I am also in love the Sunrise room next to the Master! I cannot begin to think how many ways this beautiful home will have to invite us to have our morning coffee!! Nice to have a space to sun ourselves without actually being outside!! Another great place to watch a sunrise would be on the rooftop, so I'm putting in my order for living space "up on the roof!!" Which leads into lyrics in my head……

"When this old world starts getting me down,
And people are just too much for me to face—
I climb way up to the top of the stairs
And all my cares just drift right into space … "

Marie Miller on October 6, 2009 at 12:00 pm
    • I agree and to match your rhyme:

Into my world my dreams are abound without a frown
Gingerly lingering, healing, aligning myself within the human race
Surrounded, yet securely cocooned within my lofty lair
Back to ground vying a bid, reaching for this peaceful lovely place

  16. continuing……

Thank you for answering Katydid's question about the water feature, and we will all hang on to the thoughts of having one! Sorry to hear that a moat is not in the works to keep out the slithering beasts, but certainly understand the complexity of having one!!

Another question I have is one of interest about the roof top! Will there be access to the roof from inside the home? I cannot tell by the floor plans? I'm thinking that the area on the roof would support a fantastic outside living space, as well as a place to have 360 degree views of the Sandia Mountains!!

Marie Miller on October 6, 2009 at 11:54 am
    • Totally agree with rooftop access, but have to be permissable with those types of roofs, special decking over roof top so not to break roof shield.

with that being said, are you going with the traditional tar roof? or more green with plants on a nice sloping roof? Can't really tell as it's all unviewable from the outside? I prefer modest slopes and pitched to facilitate water use/runoff for a green purpose. Since this is the dream home world. Why not dream big…

PFG on October 7, 2009 at 1:47 am
    • HGTV had a young couple looking for a vacation home near the Sandia Mountains…..Each time it shows…I think someone really has scoped out this beautiful area!

  18. Here is 1 of my many, many conceptual design thoughts & my endless imagination at work with design 4 fun (pretty, fun & great=PFG). I have an idea 4 bringing 2 elements of fire & water together, maybe done b4, but new 2 me as I think about this setting. Here it goes: The outside f/p is nested into a mtn of seating huge warm colored rocks at base/ground, with rocks stacked/concreted in & upwards to roof height. Placed adjacent of side of house, but has small narrowing opening 2 allow morning sun 2 kitchen & narrow arched walkspace from MB area. Touching house at topside, but not resting on house. On backside of MB closet space off rightside of deck, forming 1/2 enclosure to the pool/pond/spa space while shielding eastside deck space from wind as Albq (has lots of wind from East/West if I recall correctly) Continued

PFG on October 6, 2009 at 11:12 pm
  19. Enclosed in rocks is f/p that can be viewed from both sides, deck & MB. Water spills off roof rock on top of house & into pond/pool/or spa space below. Another portion of water flows directly in front of f/P 2 form a wide water sheet as a mantle(water has flickering firelight behind it) & both water elements bleed together to pond/spa/pool. Rock seats on both sides off the deck, around pond/pool space off deck & seats on backside for MB space with backside of f/p seen thru rocks on bothsides of rock mtn. Thruout home u can enjoy space either inside/outside. MB space can have it's own dynamic now. Water could flow around in front of MB to be pumped back to roof.

  20. I would like the water 2 move & progress 2 more than 1 spot. I like asian themes 4 gardens, with this arrid climate, slow growing textures, reds, plums, yellows, greens for depth. As you look in this landscape naturally, hues r grays, blues, browns, & spatter of green upwards. Winter white temporarily with green & then back again. At homesite, plants that are great color, folage, & slow to grow, but trees that are not might be good here. We had great huge trees in our hard when we lived there and house is now gone, but trees are not. ;o)

PFG on October 6, 2009 at 11:16 pm
  21. This is what we call a great snowbird, or retirement haven here in Albq. It has progressed immensely since I lived & worked here 23 years ago. Still the best weather in the world, never tooo hot if shaded and never awfully too cold if not in the direct wind for too long. Great healthy place.

  22. I read in someone's request on wondering what the property tax rate was in NM? I was curious on it 2, changes & such since living there so long ago. So many states have increased dramatically in the turn of the century (doesn't this sound 2 funny-turn of the century @2000's). NM still has low cost of living overall in comparison, but taxes, property taxes, & how the rules apply 2 us in any given situation are & can be a harsh reality all the same. I did read in one of these sweepstakes I just found like here a few days ago. Assessed taxes are the responsibility of the winner/prize & hope it works out for the winners. Hoping 4 them.
NM state govt page: (Property is in Bernalillo County I believe, so can be hefty) NM Tax Info: Rates vary substantially & depend on property type & location. The statewide weighted average rates, i.e., total obligations/total net taxable value, are about $26.47 per $1,000 for residential property & $29.80 per $1,000 4 non-residential property. Taxable value is 1/3 of assessed value (see below). NOTE: These property tax rates are for the 2005 tax year.

PFG on October 7, 2009 at 2:34 pm
  23. I'm sure this home would come in at least an govt assessed value of bare minimum of $350,000 as it's high & lots of other places are 2. So, 1/3 of assessed value is 116.66 X $26.47 (at 2005 rate) = $3, 087.99, but I would foresee more with residentual bldg actually developed, acreage, but maybe winner could get a break with specific location & there own specific needs. I would not be surprised that it would be more in the range of $4,500 annually & divide that by 12 = $375.00 a month just for property tax alone. Yeppers, I say ouch for an average income, but should not have a house payment, maybe. Not sure how all that works.
I hope well, good thoughts with that concerning news for the family of it & trying to stay literally positive in reality for the winner that it works out well for them.

Great Green Gem!! Is there a sliding door into the office or does it have a private entrance from the driveway? Who's the guest designer? Candice Olsen?? She is a great designer and I love one of the rooms she did, with a fireplace surrounded by two water walls!!! So cool!! Are you going to use the spray foam roof?? So many questions… We are all so excited…. Could you be putting in a spool? You know that they are easy to heat and are great for exercise, as you can swim against the current!! • This is all new 2 me, so do you look up previous sweepstake & it lists this type of info on designers?
Everytime I come into here, I find an another feature in an open exchange like this as never chatted online with not knowing them, except work stuff.
I, 2 wonder on the recycling area? Will it have stairs that lead to the roof top? Agree, those wave pools are great & not the large expense of bldg, maintaining & cleaning like a typical pool. Smaller pump, filter, & not too much notable presence on landscape.
I like spa's 2, they to have useful purposes as well & that would be nice for Master of the house. I wonder if the windows are Low-E or ? I see the ceiling as tongue & groove paneling, but will they have the heavy acentuated Vigas or Corbels. That would raise the eye to that spactacular ceiling display?

PFG on October 7, 2009 at 3:27 pm
      • Hi PFG. The recycling area is in between the 3 car garage and the kitchen!! Great Spot!! I don't see anything that leads to having a roof top…. So, not sure if they are going to add a roof top deck…but, it doesn't look like it…. They have a few different sitting areas outside…. one, outside the Sunroom and Master Bedroom and the second, outside the Kitchen/Great Room. I believe that they are keeping a more contemporary style on this Southwest Home… Not much Pueblo influence. I am sure that the window are low-e and that they will use as many green features as possible… They always use new and inventive products in the Dream and Green Homes. The designers are listed throughout the HGTV website… But, I am an avid watcher of a few of them on TV!!! (over 11 years now). I am excited to see what water feature they decide on…. but, I am keeping my fingers crossed for the spool!! For exercise…. for relaxation!! Good luck on getting more info!!! Love life by living green!!

      • Hi PFG… I sent you a text yesterday and it got lost in cyberspace!! Te recycling area is in a great spot between the 3 car garage and kitchen. The info on the designers is from watching HGTV for the last 11 years and watching the Dream Home and Green Home teams invite a guest designer!!! Yes, a spool would be great, both for exercise and for relaxation!!!! I am sure that they will use Low-E windows, as they always use the best of the best materials and have been trying to get the homes greener and greener!!! They usually keep the walls pretty clean and use art work to decorate. They are great at layering!!! This Dream Home has beautiful decorative beams!!! Hope that I answered some of your questions!!!! Talk to you soon!!! Love life by living green!!!

  27. Something I've been meaning to ask:

Are they going to antiqued the walls?
Maybe, some light & colored use of motif's, tiles, bas reliefs?
(I'm trying to develope a new product on this myself, it's all in the paperwork stage & I'm here instead, LOL, (reminding myself to cut & run)
Are they going to use the antiquing wax faux technique? (I think it's called this)? It seems to be with waxed antiqued look and easier to apply I've read with a more truer antiqued look. Great look, again my opinion as it applies to this atmosphere in style.
Are the walls going to have the rounded corners thruout or just main living spaces?
Are they doing the Kiva style fireplaces anywhere? Maybe, casita with seeing a corner type one?
Wish that there is a stylized baseboard to accentuate the ground, flooring, with wood ceilings, headers, in rooms even though it's pueblo designed and looks to me too baron & undone without it?
Good luck in all the decisions made & I'm sure it's presentation when done will be pleasing to the eye!

He actually worships this "cool" individual. He started reading at the age of 3, because he mentioned that he wanted to be on TV, like this individual (though, this person was in the theater, I purchased a video, because of his age), so I told him that he needed to read to be on TV. How do you repay a "celebrity" for motivating your child? I guess u keep bribing them……just kidding!!!!!! I am proud even if he decided to put organic floors in, for a living. A mother's love is unconditional!!!! Sorry, I got carried away with one message!!! Waiting to see what else besides, fireplaces, water feature…..what else!!! Come on Gail!! Can't I bribe you…. I mean you look like Miss America in that picture!!!!!!!!! You are too pretty to be our FAN!!!! LOL!!!! You need to look like us…. dark bags under the eyes, hair dis-shoveled…. , no make-up, confused, in our pajamas…..!!!!! 33. I read where there is going to be an "Ooh La La Christmas Home Tour" featuring three homes in High Desert, one home in North Albuquerque Acres, and four homes in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. "All the homes will be decked out for Christmas and may be viewed over the two-day period for $20. Active duty military with ID will be admitted free of charge." "The three homes in High Desert will be open to the public November 7th and 8th as part of a Christmas Home Tour to benefit wounded service men and women."

How fabulous is that? I wonder if the DH2010 could participate next year? Sooooo, Linda maybe on one of your shopping extravaganzas, you might come up with outside Christmas decor as well. Afterall, it is for a good cause!!!

    • Thank you, & I do have just a few years of history in the rear of me, LOL. Lived in Albq from 1986 to 1992. On your Christmas lights comment, good luck & have fun. Albq was 1 of my most memorable Christmas lights displays I've witnessed to date, lots of cities & countries. Lovely, all thruout the area of Four Hills (North Albq, just South Tijeras canyon). House after house, street after street lit up, avid participation, homeowners giving generously, songs, costumed, live performances 4 us viewers. Heartwarming. It was a day or so b4 Christmas, & it had snowed a pretty heavy blanket over the city earlier that day. 2 Spectacular, with it taking on a whole new ambience that I have never seen like this. The colorful lights cast glowing colors hidden slightly under the snow, some peering out, casting long colors, while others were clearly visable. The snow led to a greater brilliance of displays as more splashes of color were arranged with bigger displays. Lights bouncing color on to & off with flickering & flashing underneath. It was something, I'm hoping to see another again, like that someday.

  34. Marie, I bet that they use luminarias for the lighting decorations for the Christmas Home Tour!!! I love the was they use the luminarias everywhere; they put them along the pathways, sidewalks, driveways, their roof tops, etc. They actually go out each night to light them.. I used them once in Phoenix at Christmas. I took regular paper bags, added sand and a few rocks and then place small candles (tea lights) in the center and lit them. They were beautiful…. And I was wondering that too…. PFG has a lot of information that I am use to hearing from Coop!!! Love life by living green!!!

    • It's lovely, different, good looking, perfectly spaced, & when they flicker in with wind. Your catches the one quickly out of place, or blew out and you've got to fix it right away or just want to if it's not your display.

Yes, so agree with the lighting of each and every one as being the hard part. On the rooftops edgings, all the way all around the walkways alligned to your yard. So much more fun & easier with lots of participation!

  36. Albuquerque recycle program: I have several friends that live still live in Albq. We were just talking about recycle 3 weeks ago…wish Albq invested more into recycling 4 all of our futures with amending our wastes…- Albq has only apparently paper, a fairly new glass pickup added. Twice (2 times, ouch) a year. Recycle products are p/u on designated dates only & u must bag/tag it yourself. City personnel get around to p/u. It's 2 sad, not ANY plastics, none. :o ( __ Now, where the DH is…it's quite a long way around 2 get 2 Albq. So, more than likely, the only thing available will be a contracted local company 4 basic trash pickup. Maybe, U get a plastic refuse container 2 use? This DH is quite a ways off grid. Many little towns 2 go thru 2 get to Albq. It's does have a septic tank 4 sewage, so that is another indicator, it’s off the grid so to speak. Way different, if u are city folks…it becomes an adventure 2 go 2 town…

  37. Gross difference with the state I’m in now 2 NM currently. This state has 1 of the best programs I’ve ever been in with recycle programs thus far. Your provided large bins 4 weekly p/u 4 papers, all plastics, all glass, cardboards, all metals, all yard wastes each & every week. Workers sort & do it all 4 u & size is no matter. I‘ve seen pickup 4 old furniture, remodeling scraps (toilets even), all kinds of stuff, it‘s all taken care of 4 you. It‘s 2 surprising at times what is put out & p/u from curbs. This state reclaims loads & loads of glass, cardboard, paper, plastic waste, grinds it down based upon type for sale in bulk to manufacturers all over the world.
Wish NM & all of our state officials & actual facilitators would claim importance 4 recycle programs, plan, act, step up, for giving recycling purposeful outcomes back to the states & cities.

There is hope…dream big! So you can achieve & if you get close, great, even close is better than not at all! :o ) It's all good.

  38. reneelovesgreen: Thank you 4 sending me an email, taking a moment 2 respond 2 all my questions while giving me your thoughts 2. ;o)
Everytime I come into here new items read gives way 2 more thoughts & ?'s: As noted on plans the extra long elongated rectangular recycle room: I'm still up 4 seeing a stairwell come out of it.

    * There is hope, we'd most certainly all b lost without it :o ) *

Maybe, it’s an after thought adjustment? Let recycle be underneath stair stringer boxed in creatively, along with storage on back wall. Boxed in, shelves, bins, encased, & trash compactor.
Stairs that lead 2 gorgeous green decking on rooftop of garages. A good use 4 needed storage, recycle & mud room in combination.
Albq really has extremely limited recycle programs, almost
non- existent. The DH is removed from this city…

  39. Wow, the features just keep getting better and better! Mary you are looking good as always! I was wondering if there will be a beautiful pool to go with those outdoor fireplaces? Ooooo la la! Wouldn't that just complete the dream. Keep updating us as you always do, it's fun to see what's coming next. 40. Hello Renee: the room by the laundry room looks like a utility room. May be for the solar hot water tank etc. I looked at the HGTPPRO constuction photos & it looks like the main manifold for the radiant floor heating in in that room.

  41. Hello Everybody, I Just wanted say a special hello to all, and give a Big Yes , to everyones praise of your beautiful picture Gail , exquisitely Beautiful,… I wanted to mention too, I think it was Linda that has a little concern about " snakes" Well take it from me they are any where,! even where you are now , I would never have thought I would walk out my front door and have a 4 1/2 foot rattle snake lying a few feet from my porch, not once but Twice, Sooo , the key is" Learning awareness " you have to train, train ,train , yourself to watch before you walk and soon the fear gets better, because I think we just forget there are dangers every where. I just wanted to mentioned that because we probably will someday have the experience of a snake or two in NM, for who ever wins !!! Just be careful as you would be hiking any where. Looking forward to getting to know everybody , Best to all , Ali B

  42. Hello Katydid, I'm glad to be back and indulging myself with a day of catching up with all my online friends and great posts.

It goes without saying—wow, we now have an especially glamorous Super Fan photo. GAIL Fenton has become our new HGTV Dream Home Diva.

Okay, I'll admit it, I'm very impressed with the four fireplaces, and a water feature to boot, along with all those other enticing details. It just keeps getting better and better. We're all going to be so spoiled, and then before you know it, MARY will hit us with all those luscious interior design photos. Talk about being overwhelmed.

I, for one, promise to brace myself for more incoming treats for all sources, so bring it on, HGTV.

  46. Hello, Super Fan! I'm curious about the casita. After seeing the tour video, looking at still photos, and exploring the virtual tour, I'm still trying to figure out the bathroom… Is it not completely enclosed? It looks like the glass panel between the shower and the bedroom doesn't go from floor to ceiling. Also, is it possible to hang a curtain on the inside of that separating glass panel to block the view from the room into the shower? That's just a tad awkward… Why would they have designed it like that? It doesn't make any sense to me at all.

  47. I have not seen anything posted that addresses the type of heating/cooling system is installed. I see that there is radiant floor heat and solar panels but what actually type of system actually heats and cools the house? Are the solar panels for daytime electric or are they for hot water? Also, is there any rainwater reclaimation system installed to use for watering plants or flushing toilets ect? Was it every considered since this house is located in the desert and I would assume minimal amounts of yearly rain.

    Thanks for your input.
