Cook Time: N/A
Ease of Preparation: Easy

Ingredients:

  • • 2 ounces Tequila
  • • 1 1/2 ounces fresh lime juice
  • • 1 ounce of simple syrup
  • • 1/2 ounce of green chile juice (see tips)
  • • Margarita salt for rim
  • • Lime wedge for garnish

Using a lime wedge, coat the outside lip of a margarita glass and salt the rim. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Place remaining ingredients in the shaker and shake vigorously for three seconds. Pour the ingredients into the salted glass and garnish with a lime wedge.

Tips:
To make the simple syrup, use the ratio of one part water to one part granulated sugar.
To prepare the green chile juice, place 1 New Mexico green chile in a blender with 1 ounce of water and blend thoroughly. Separate the puree with a fine mesh strainer and place in a squeeze bottle. If New Mexico green chiles are not available, serrano peppers may be substituted.

  1. I hope everyone here that is complaining about the house are NOT going to registar to win because I like the house, if you don't than why registar….. that way I will have a better chance of winning… No not everything suits my taste in the house, but I have the option of changing things if I win….. so don't registar if you don't like it, I love NM, but not Las Cruces….. wouldn't want to live around people like JMACK

    • I reported his crude language to the web master. We are all entitled to our opinions, but not to being offensive online. If someone feels they can't abide by these standards, stay away. We have many friendly, positive, even if not liking the home, peeps on this blog.

DebbieFlorida on January 2, 2010 at 7:03 pm
    • I agree! If you don't like it, don't enter!

      Heritage_Seeker on January 2, 2010 at 9:03 pm
    • Or, if you can't get beyond the idea of the taxes, which are substantial, don't enter. I'll be happy to pay the taxes, sell the home if I choose to, and walk away with a cool million or so. What's to complain about?

  2. I really enjoyed the tour of the 2010 Dream Home yesterday. Today my favorites rooms are: The Sunrise Room, Walk-through Pantry, Home Theater and being able to have a dining table on the MotorCcourt. Since I am a morning person I would really savour the sunrise with my first cup of coffee. The Walk-thorough Pantry makes it easy to get things organized and ready to go to the dining room for dinner with family. Watching HGTV in the Home Theater would be even better than before. I can't imagine how much fun it would be to have family and friends gathered around tables on the Motor Court eating New Mexico cuisine and watching the sunset and then the stars come out. Way to go HGTV!

  3. Hey All!!! Just wanted to check in and catch up with some of my blogging buddies! Remember to ignore any negativity that is uncalled for and except different views (as long as they are not argumentative!) There is no reason for personal attacks. We all have different perspectives on what a Dream Home should be and until the keys are handed over to you, no need for negative, derogatory comments. This community is open and uplifting to one another and love to hear different point of views. Please also remember that this home is not the Green Home though the talented crew at HGTV has implemented many "green" features because of their knowledge obtained from building the Green Homes!!! No matter who wins, I wish luck to all and remember if you don't love the home or can not afford it…. sell it!! You could walk away with a good chunk of cash and a new car!! Can't see that being a negative. Coop, I agree with you on the Casita and I have two ideas for you… One, buy a curtain for the glass shower wall and install on industrial metal tension wire and hook. Two, have a new glass shower wall that becomes fogged with a flip of the switch. The walls can be painted a variety of colors, after viewing that amazing tiled wall!!! I would go with a neutral, as I am not a fan of red… cayenne… etc. Love life by living green and having a dream!!!

reneelovesgreen on January 2, 2010 at 4:19 pm
    • I like the idea of the "fogged" glass wall with the flip of a switch. Maybe even include a soft and subtle colored lighting effect. Well, many great options, and I don't think I'll worry too much about it until 15 March!

    • We do live in a country with free speech and everyone is entitled to their own views. We can send our good thoughts to all other bloggers and hope it lifts their spirits. I feel very forunate to be able to be a part of all of this. The dream team works very hard at their jobs and I'm sure they know they can't please everyone but they do try. The rewards of winning all this warms my heart to each of them for the tremendous amount of work they put in all year. I think they want the winner to really enjoy it why else would they add such a large cash prize. Renee I'm sure you're cheerful sprit will affect others as it does me, so please keep it up. Good luck on the dream rlg.

      • Excellent post as we do et to post our perspectives. Somedays maybe more harmonious, liked, & the latter on other days. If our ideas, thoughts as viewed at that moment in time. I think all the diversiifications we all bring here make this a better informed placed with it's activity of thoughts.
Foolishness for trying contain ideas, thoughts, opinions, our differences definitely.

Being full of cheer for yourself is your choice, and anyone that claims a benefit from it. Choice, love our choices to blog.

PFG on January 2, 2010 at 5:52 pm
    • Good Point. Several have mentioned the "Green" use or maintaining the "Green Home" concept, but agree this is the Dream Home, not the Green Home.

I still find it interesting that the designers go in and add all these color schemes to homes, but one of the first things they tell the homesellers is to get rid of the colors and go with more subdued/low-key colors.

vbbond on January 3, 2010 at 12:45 am
      • Colors are very personal, as what it means in feelings to one, often is not for what it is for another.

More often the suggestions to neutralize color comes from real estate agents as they want to appease the largest market to give a way easier task to selling the home. A lot of young, unexperienced people, old ones too, cannot see past your color, wallpaper, or wall applications you have or don't want too. So they cannot appreciate the space behind your personal touches as applied. So remove them, give more diversification with your product your selling, right, that usually is the reasoning for change of color at time of selling? Not a lot of colors, wall applications are done professionally & it shows.

    • I'm doing my best to remain above the fray, reneelovesgreen. However, if Show Me were to win the Dream Home instead of me, things could get a little, shall we say, dicey!

  4. I've just looked at the San Pedro Overlook Master community site plan. Can you tell me what is the lot number for the HGTV Dream Home? I'm just curious how close any neighbors will be located and whether any of the views will be obstructed in the future? Thanks!

Kathryn on January 2, 2010 at 4:24 pm
    • Kathryn, I replyed earlier, but, as sometimes happens on line, it was lost in the ether. It's in Phase 2, lot 87. I know this thanks to Coop. If you want to explore more, go to Google Earth an look at it. The resolution isn't good at close in, as this isn't a heavily occupied area. I you read all in the developers' site, you'll see that there are plans for quite a bit more development, including 3 more developments across Rt. 14. One of those is for medium density development. I think I read in one of the New Mexico business journals that the lots will be small.

DebbieFlorida on January 2, 2010 at 6:45 pm
      • DFlorida,

Forgive me for the quick response. We are developing 5 miles south on North 14 a 2 acre minimum community, but that will not occur for several more years. Right now we are concentrating on San Pedro Overlook and our Gated 160-acre farm & ranch community which is 4 miles north of San Pedro Overlook. The DH is on LOT 87 just as you stated.

Dutch on January 2, 2010 at 9:03 pm
        • So good to have someone who actually knows the scoop. I'll try to find where I saw a platt plan for the area south of SPO. With all the holiday activities, I could have imagined it. But, as I said, I'm sure there is enough room for all. When we built our Maine place, we were on the end of the road, with one 2 acre lot being next to us and the last. I was heart broken that I couldn't raise the money to buy the lot, but now I am so glad I didn't. The neighbor family have become our family. It's also safer to have neighbors looking after your property. More people mean more services as well. Thanks for the info.

  5. Oops… I forgot …. Mary, thank you for the recipe! Glad to see that the Santa Fe Soiree theme was chosen! I loved the sunflowers and the lighting. I also loved the use of the dining table and desk for outdoor dining… you could enjoy a grand Family Reunion !! 7. Who can guess what is in the space between the Office and Dining Room?? Indoor spool?? I don't see an outdoor water feature… Still dreaming!!

reneelovesgreen on January 2, 2010 at 4:41 pm
    • Could it be the elusive powder room? This is just like the Sonoma Dream Home—the powder room seems to magically "disappear" every year!

I guess there won't be a spool, but not to worry. I'll have a natural rock water feature with bubbling waterfall installed, and be perfectly happy.

DBCoop on January 2, 2010 at 5:09 pm
      • I know!! I am just dreaming!! I thought at this "valued prize" amount that there may just be another wild feature that we could never imagine!! Would love to exercise in the Winter …. and a spool would help greatly!! I love waterfalls and would be happy just the same!!

reneelovesgreen on January 3, 2010 at 4:47 pm
    • I agree with DBCoop that it could be the powder room. The details list three bedrooms, three baths. If you are counting the Casita B/R, there are four, so I don't think that the third bath is the Casita bath.

  8. Good to hear from our friend Dutch once again. I know you're working to keep the Dream Home and the entire SPO community in tip-top shape for the folks at HGTV and of course for the lucky winner in March.
Can you try to have some warmer weather for the winner's first Dream Home visit? Dreamers everywhere would like to see plenty of sunshine and smiles on the winner's walk-through video.

    • Thanks DBCoop, so many people have worked so hard to put all of this together! And I am grateful for each one of them. As for the weather it is only 45, but the sun is shining and I am having a great time showing the community to perspective customers.

  10. Where was the dishwasher? I didn't see it in the kitchen. With all the other high end appliances there has to be one somewhere. Did I miss it? There was a comment about the walk through pantry being a convenient place to store dirty dishes; what about a place to wash them? Otherwise a lovely house.

Saunnie on January 2, 2010 at 5:08 pm

  11. Hey All!!! Bloggersing! Enjoying all different views we have proposed here, while celebrating them too. Really enjoy the variety of people with different perspectives, so wonderful we have this marketed informative site to blog on & use. Not one form, but all varied viewpoints, ideas come alive here. Isn't it great, the composition, we all make. Let us blog, with all our diversifications, we all make & bring in here to this ultimate marketed place we have.
Different opinions are wonderful, how else do we learn, grow & develope…it's a way we choose, where we are, want to go, & what we will do next. Different, is NOT argumentative, biased, it's just different. Different does not mean bad, negative, or a less valued connotation is necessary. It's just a perspective no different than any others, like yours or mine. It's the real world that is keen, not dictating form here. Success comes in all forms, as with successful people. It's choice, our choice, how we blog with this sites guidelines given, not bloggers needs.

Lessie on January 3, 2010 at 8:26 pm

DBCoop on January 3, 2010 at 9:20 pm
    • And it depends on how long the same subject is discussed! I guess "fluffy" comments pertain to those uplifting comments used between a lot of us who have gotten use to one another's character.. But, when folks come on the blog site to call names or to reiterate there political views in depth is uncalled for. Usually, it happens in depth after the Dream/Green Home has been awarded… I am only commenting on the personal attacks… not open opinions and perspectives. I think you have taken my comment to another argumentative blogger and assumed it directed towards you. We all love learning as long as it does not attack others…. This is the main reason the HGTV implemented "Intense Debate" to our Blogging Community!! Wish you the best and much luck!!! As, I have never assumed that my opinion is any better than anyone here. Love life by living green and having a dream!!

reneelovesgreen on January 3, 2010 at 5:02 pm
  12. How would I use the $500,000 cash prize money…………I would use it to pay off the taxes and association fees, of course! I love the idea of winning a Dream Home and living debt free and not owing the state or the HOA any money at all. That would be my dream come true! And by the time you factor in Green Features, like Solar Panels, I wouldn't have any utilities to pay either. Perfect!!!

  13. Hey all, just thought you might want to know that there is a special advertising section in the February issue of Country Living featuring the 2010 New Mexico Dream Home! Lots of beautiful pictures — the lighting gives the home a warm glow in the photos. There are also short descriptions of most of the rooms. And yes, there are two dishwashers, one being in the kitchen. It does not say where, but I would guess in the island.

    C&E on January 2, 2010 at 6:15 pm
    • Wow, thanks for the heads-up about the Country Living spread on the Dream Home, C&E. That's certainly worth looking into, even if only for the photos!

DBCoop on January 2, 2010 at 6:48 pm
    • C&E, I was taking the 360 tour of the kitchen last night and I think I found the dishwasher in the kitchen. Yes it is in the island. I saw a cabinet that went from the bottom of the counter to the floor with a long horizontal handle . I think that this might be the dw in the kitchen as the other side had 2 shorter cabinets with 2 shorter horizontal handles, YAHOO I've always wanted house with 2 dishwashers for entertaining—one to wash the china and crystal and one to wash the pots and pans!!

BDianeB on January 2, 2010 at 7:00 pm
    • Thanks C&E. Will pick up the February issue of Country Living.

Lessie on January 2, 2010 at 8:41 pm
    • Wow! Two dishwashers! Why didn't they mention them? Did not see one when Jack was so proud showing off that kitchen. How come?

Katydid on January 3, 2010 at 1:00 am
  14. The ad in Country Living magazine also lists all of the sponsors at the end. Now I know why the child's bedroom has such a Toy Story theme — there is a third Toy Story movie coming out! This also explains the lack of tile floors, which are usually so characteristic of southwestern homes — the floor sponsor does wood floors. Like PFG said, it's all about the sponsors, but I guess that's not necessarily a bad thing — at least they are involved, which helps make the whole giveaway possible. I certainly intend to enter every day, and would not mind in the least if i won!

    C&E on January 2, 2010 at 6:24 pm
    • You're right, C&E. Some folks, in their comments, may not realize that sponsers DO affect the design and style to some degree. After all, as you say, they ARE helping to make the Dream Home financially feasible year after year. Much better a few design differences of opinion than no Dream Home at all.

DBCoop on January 2, 2010 at 6:42 pm
      • Amen to that. I prefer hardwood floors to tile. To me hardwood is so much warmer but that is just my opinion

BDianeB on January 2, 2010 at 7:02 pm
    • Absolutely loved the Walt Disney Theme. The Toy Story shadow box had the original signatures of the director/producer of the film inside it along with several Toy Story items. Very cool!

Dutch on January 2, 2010 at 9:28 pm
      • That shadow box is definitely a keeper! I'm glad Disney is a sponsor of the Dream Home.

Lessie on January 3, 2010 at 8:32 pm
    • Did not dawn on me that the sponsors (Free) play such a big role in the details of the house( like wood floors and Toy Story room).Thank goodness for sponsors or this probably would not be possible.

badkins on January 4, 2010 at 12:35 am
  15. My only disappointments in last night's show were the omission of a quick tour of the utilities room next to the sunrise room, accessed from the outside. I'd love to see the "bridge deck" so to speak where the manifold for the in floor radient heat is housed and to learn more about the airconditioning. Wonder if the solar panels have deep storage batteries housed here, and if the power generated heats the water that circulates through the piping. Is a hot water system? About conservation. A large home with all the newest technology is much more efficient that an old one with conventional things, single paned windows, little insulation, etc. Those Anderson windows are great. We have them throught in our Maine home. They do everything they are advertised to do.

DebbieFlorida on January 2, 2010 at 6:37 pm
    • I too am interested in the house mechanicals, but it doesn't make the most interesting of interior design reveal for many folks, I guess. I think we'll get more info with online videos, etc, as the days go by.

DBCoop on January 2, 2010 at 6:44 pm
    • I'm not sure how necessary air conditioning would be in the area of the Dream Home. It just doesn't get very hot up there. I spotted some air vents so assume there is central air. I doubt it will be needed very often.

Subuquerque on January 2, 2010 at 8:14 pm
      • Subuquerque, that's very good to know. I'd think air conditioning would be a necessity during the summer. Seems like this Dream Home is in an ideal location. Great work Jack T!

Lessie on January 2, 2010 at 8:47 pm
        • Most of us Northern New Mexicans us swamp cooling for our homes. It's a great deal more economical and adds a bit of much appreciated moisture to the air.

Subuquerque on January 2, 2010 at 9:21 pm
          • I wondered about the swamp coolers. Seems that just about every home had them up in Farmington. Also, I know you'd need a humidifier, as least til you became acclimated. When ever I go out to your neck of the woods, I use lots of saline gel in my nose and spray with a salt spray. Keeps you from getting unpleasant side effects from it being so dry.. I also remember in the high desert, It rarely got intolerably hot, as it does here in FL. And the nights are always cool. And Boy, the stars.

DebbieFlorida on January 2, 2010 at 10:04 pm
          • 'Swamp cooler" – had to look it up because I hadn't heard of it. Great invention! Thanks for the info Subuquerque.

Lessie on January 3, 2010 at 8:39 pm
          • A former Texan who didn't know about Swamp Coolers? Wow, they are (or were) very popular in the West/Southwest where climates are drier. They don't work in humid climates. Evaporative (or swamp) coolers are far more economical than central air to run.

DBCoop on January 3, 2010 at 9:25 pm
          • My part of Texas is humid! Wish it was dry, would have had more good hair days. :)

  16. Tonight is Dream Home menu in the Boerger household. My husband is making his amazing chili which will be introduced by the Norteno Cocktail and guacamole. It's cool and dry here in the Big Guava (Tampa), so we can sit on the deck and pretend to be in NM. BTW, it's so extremely dry in that area that the cold doesn't penetrate as it does in a humid climate. A good windbreaker will fix you up, unless it gets way below freezing. We weren't cold even when the propane froze in our camper.

DebbieFlorida on January 2, 2010 at 6:55 pm

  17. Beautiful as usual. HGTV did a great job…. even a little "green". Nothing should be changed! The views are amazing. I have never been much for deserts till now. What kind of wildlife can be seen? Which direction does the house face(sunset or sunrise?) Either one has to be amazing. Great it is all on one level.

  19. New Mexican style? I agree with Lessie that many, many homes are typical American with a few area touches thrown in, and that many business play up the Pueblo or Spanish theme, except for the Deco and 50s stuff on Old Rt. 66. If we abide by the indigenous style, and they build one in Mississippi, would it have to be a shack with an outdoor john to be authentic? I am from MS, by the way, so I can say that.

  20. Dear Fellow Bloggersand HGTV,
I enjoyed the tour of the home last night and taped it so that I can dream a bit every day! When it was announced that the dream home was to built in the desert, I thought that this would be the first dream home that I wouldn't want to win. I LOVE thefloor plan,Linda's interior design,,the awesome views, the liberal use of tile on the walls, and the lovely master bedroom and bath! Won't the casita be grrrrr-8 for visiting family and friends! Hey,Santa Fe Native, where is the ski resort in the area???

Lucky Lady on January 2, 2010 at 7:29 pm
    • Resort? No resort but Sandia Peak is a short drive.

Subuquerque on January 2, 2010 at 8:06 pm
      • Does Sandia Peak have ski runs? I seem to remember some. That tramway was one of the most awesome experiences for us. We also drove up using the road on the east side of the mountain. Have you been to Tinkertown which is on RT. 14 just south of SPO. So much creavity.

DebbieFlorida on January 2, 2010 at 8:22 pm
        • Ski runs, ski lift, snow boarding, There are designated areas for inner tubing and sledding as well. I haven't been to Tinkertown in many years. The place made me dizzy with so much to look at! I enjoy driving up to Madrid and poking through the shops.
The tram flight is wonderful and the views incredible. We spotted deer the last time we took the ride. I forgot to mention that I spotted a flock of bluebirds on our dream home drive by the other day. So pretty!

Subuquerque on January 2, 2010 at 8:54 pm
    • The better ski resorts are located north of Santa Fe and Ski Santa Fe is 20 minutes north of the Santa Fe plaza.

SantaFeNative on January 2, 2010 at 8:29 pm
    • Another great place to visit in New Mexico is Ruidoso!! A great ski resort town …. more of a drive (from the Dream Home), but a great weekend getaway!

  21. This is a unique modern home, not my favorite so far but its an ultra modern fantasy desert home- except where is the pool and spa? This dry and rugged landscape needs a water feature to soften the landscape, at least a built in spa for the chilly desert nights.

I LOVE the custom wall tiles and the pine ceilings, the master bedroom is gorgeous, but the rest of the interiors are a little plain for me. I would have liked a richer, more territorial SW style, but Ethan Allen is the sponsor and I don't think they have that kind of stuff in their collections They could have tried to pull it off, there are some examples Country Living did with modern neutral furniture and rich SW Spanish and Mexican accents and fabrics.

I am ready to add these touches in March!

  22. I like margaritas and I like hot peppers, I'll have to try this recipe! My vegetable garden still has FRESH hot peppers growing, so I'm off to the store for some fresh limes!

    Heritage_Seeker on January 2, 2010 at 8:18 pm
    • Heritage_Seeker, tell me what you think about the drink after trying it. The fresh hot peppers should enhance the flavor.

            Heritage_Seeker on January 3, 2010 at 11:38 pm
      • The drink was good. It put me in the Dream Home spirit! My choice of peppers was limited to: Thai (very hot with good flavor), Cayenne (hot with good flavor), or Tabasco (very hot, but overpowering flavor). I opted to go with the Cayenne. I would like to try the NM chili sometime — hopefully at the housewarming party!

  23. Overall very disappointed inside and out. Decor is not New Mexico; has none of the warmth of New Mexico colors. Has anyone figured out what the heating bill will be for 16 foot ceiling rooms? (That's probably what the $500,000 is for — heating and window treatments.) Why no bathroom for visitors where you don't have to walk through another room to get to it? Since New Mexico has water problems, I would have picked very low water use native plants for landscaping. The variegated Elaeagnus didn't look very native and the ones I've seen grow 6-15 ft. tall so why put them in front of a pony wall? How about a low-growing beauty like Texas Ranger "Cimarron" if it works in the climate zone. A warming drawer practically on the floor? Why not put it under the cook top where you need it? Liked the kitchen best of all for the appliances and the walk-in pantry which is a great staging and clean-up area. The two-chair sitting area in the foyer is totally wasted space. If I wanted barn doors, I'd live in a barn (or maybe a loft). Sure hope next year's dream home is better.

Becky on January 2, 2010 at 8:38 pm
    • Becky, I could not agree with you more. I bet the heating bills with radiant heat will run about $500/mo and in the summer with all the sun and heat, since there are no mature trees on the lot, I bet it runs about the same to keep the home cool. Afterall, heating or cooling 3900 sq.' is not for the faint of heart.

SantaFeNative on January 2, 2010 at 8:49 pm
    • I believe the plant you are referring to is actually a variegated euonymus which is quite drought tolerant and does very well in this area. i didn't spot one inappropriate plant in the landscaping.

Subuquerque on January 2, 2010 at 9:15 pm
    • Becky,

Thank you for your comments and I am disappointed you were disappointed. I personally loved the warm colours Linda picked out including the purple in guest #1, turquoise in guest #2, brown in office, NM orange/red in the Cassita and with the very bold NM blue on all the borders. The windows are some of the best HGTV dollars could buy and the heat transfer can hardly be felt as you press your hand against the wall of windows in the great room looking right at the Ortiz Mountains. As for the powder bath it is located next to the coat closet and is accessed by turning left as you enter the DH and is easily accessible for guests but offers privacy from the rest of the home. Again I'm sorry you were disappointed, we tried to build a home in the Southwest everyone would enjoy. Then again, if you win I'm sure you will enjoy it as well….

Dutch on January 2, 2010 at 9:26 pm
      • Dutch, we designed our home to take advantage of the location, huge glass windows facing Southeast, to collect the heat when the winter sun is so low all day. Even with wooden floors you still have that solar collection effect. We have a screened porch that we cover with clear panels in winter. The porch heats up so well, that I often open both sets of French doors to allow the heat to come in. In summer, we use a neat home made rig to blow the cool, dehumidified air from the basement up into the house. It does get very hot in Maine in July. So, I'm sure those wonderful windows in the DH are extremely well suited to the site. Triple paned? And I've been told radient heat is very efficient. Ceiling fans can blow the heat from the ceiling back down. That's how we do it with a cathedral ceiling.

  25. This is the first dream home that truly caught my husband's attention. We both love it EXCEPT for the open concept in the casita. Watching someone sitting on the "potty" may be a turn off for our family. Aside from that, the home is fabulous and we'd love to live in it. Pass the margaritas, please!

Bev in CA on January 2, 2010 at 9:32 pm
    • I completely agree about the "open" concept in the Casita bathroom. I'd either do something quite different with the area, or carefully screen my guests. If they saw nothing wrong with the glass wall giving onto a scenic toilet view, I'd have to re-evaluate any visitation offers.

DBCoop on January 2, 2010 at 11:43 pm
      • Does thismean I can't come for a visit if you won?

Lessie on January 3, 2010 at 9:08 pm
  26. I've read several posts about the Cassita regarding the shower/bath area. The Cassita is only 850ft and designed for a business or couple guest area. However, I imagine most people will have their guests stay in the main house. Then again, for the winner with an older teenager or returning college grad it may be the perfect place. Keep up the comments!

Dutch on January 2, 2010 at 9:43 pm
    • The first floorplan showed a solid wall between the bathroom and sleeping area in the casita, also a tub with shower instead of a walkin. My only complaint was one another guest get up to go to the bathroom at night and the one still asleep be blasted awake by the light. Believe me, if you have older folks (couples) staying with you, they WILL be getting up at night.

DebbieFlorida on January 2, 2010 at 10:23 pm
      • DebbieFlorida, I never envisioned putting older folks in the casita. I thought it would be more for single friends or married couples who may want their own space. College students could definitely stay there so that my sleep schedule is not interruped.

Lessie on January 3, 2010 at 9:48 pm
    • Nice try, Dutch. 850ft. in NYC can provide a kitchen area, a PRIVATE bath and a living, sleeping space. I'm thinking the Casita could house my visiting lawyer or accountant. Or the "couple" that would cook and clean and drive me around for shopping. Please keep posting.

Katydid on January 3, 2010 at 12:10 am

Lessie on January 3, 2010 at 9:53 pm
    • Hadn't thought about a business in the casita, but that works. I saw it more as an overflow room because I assumed that most of my friends would want to stay in the house with me.

      Thanks for providing insight Dutch.

Lessie on January 3, 2010 at 9:52 pm
    • That cassita would be great for a teenager( my soon to be teenager). They always seem to want more and more of their own space. I thought it was great, but do need something to seperate the space, I liked the idea of the fogged glass with a flip of a switch.

  27. How many miles is the nearest town? Is it Santa Fe? Loved the house, fresh and modern look yet still could feel at home here! Nice decorating throughout design team!

Wen on January 2, 2010 at 9:45 pm
  28. The nearest large city is Albuquerque. About a 20 to 25 minute drive in good weather.

Subuquerque on January 2, 2010 at 9:50 pm
  29. I honestly don't see what everyone is getting so excited about. The most impressive thing about this house is it's size and not anything else. I understand that New Mexico is not a place you can plant a rain forest, but it looks like they put the dream house in the middle of the Sahara Desert. I was expecting a lot more. As far as the inside decor, it lacked total creativity and any signs of Southwestern Cultures. Where was the COLOR? I could go on and on. I just was not pleased with this year's Dream Home. I hope next year's is better.

Chalameau on January 2, 2010 at 9:57 pm
    • Well, actually, much of the Sahara is considered low desert, rather than high desert like the area around the Dream Home. The low desert portion of the Sahara is made up of extensive sand dunes with virtually no vegetation whatsoever. However, because it is so vast, covering around 3,500,000 square miles, its climate and vegetation is remarkably varied. That variety of climate, vegetation and wildlife is much more analogous to what one finds in the mountainous regions that comprise Sandia Park and the scenic landscapes along the Turquoise Trail. Rainfall is more than adequate to support a wide range of plantscape; both evergreen and deciduous, and with abundant seasonal color, depending on plant choices.

Regarding design and decor, once again, there are no perfect scores, since it's all in the eye of the beholder. As the blog is an ideal place to register one's opinions, we can all appreciate the differences.

As for me, I'm excited about this Dream Home. If you don't personally see the appeal in this year's home, there's always next year! Overall, year in and year out, HGTV plays a pretty good game.

DBCoop on January 3, 2010 at 4:56 am
  30. I do feel the color scheme in this house very New Mexican, and it's eclectic enough to be interesting. Bold choices. Nice contrasts. The furnishings are modern, which is nice. All that heavy NM rough hewn stuff would have been so 80's. This is a 2010 take on the desert home. I love the style, and think the house is gorgeous. I have to agree with Marilyn about the powder room, though. Other than that it's a great space for entertaining with lots of separate areas for privacy and intimacy, too. The media room is awesome with the acoustically treated walls….yummy. And the walk through pantry… well, it rocks.

Deborah on January 2, 2010 at 10:26 pm
    • I think you've pegged it right, Deborah—this IS a 2010 take on a contemporary desert home.

By the way, regarding the powder room; there is one just off the entry hall, as you turn to enter the home office. For some reason, this is an annual occurance, and many folks seem to miss the powder room on the floorplans. It also happened with regularity last year for the 2009 Sonoma DH.

Now you can rest easy, and know all is provided for—so, enter away!

    5. Cut Cilantro
    6. Pepitas

The doors? that separate the great room from the master suite. 39. What the heck is Moderation? It thought when Coop said his least fav room was moderation, he was making a very clever joke, re the luxury of "our" DH. Is something to do with blogging? Being new to this, I'm guessing it's like your comments being sent to purgatory until you either go to hell or get back on the blog????

BTW, the margarita is fabulous. I'm going to bed now.

DebbieFlorida on January 3, 2010 at 2:03 am
    • Well, you're close, DebbieFlorida. My comment was a play on words. Actually, there are "trigger words" (known only to HGTV Admin), along with derogatory personal attacks, issues, and advertising that will send your comment directly to the deep freeze—that is, it will not be posted until read and okayed for posting. Unfortunately, the comments generally remain frozen somewhere in time and space, and may never see the light of day. It can be frustrating when the comment is totally innocent (especially with longer comments, which then have to be reconstructed, hopefully without the trigger word), but the computer cannot analyze "intent", and only responds to a preprogrammed word list.

I discovered recently that the word c-a-s-i-n and o apparently will trigger sending a comment to moderation purgatory. Not that I'm pushing gambling, but it seems to be a wholesome adult activity, if pursued with responsible commonsense limits. After all, it only took me one late evening of play to come up with a whopping $16 profit!

How can one suggest to Blog Central that there be a category just for questions and answers, with answers coming from Super Fan or other knowledgable person? 43. HGTV Dream Home Special GREAT STUFF. I love this home $ 500.000 KISSES inside and out side.

Ladyleo on January 2, 2010 at 11:26 pm
  44. Let me first start by saying that I would love to win this house! However, I do have a couple of questions. First, what's up with the queen sized bed in the master of a million-dollar plus home. I work in Arizona in the home furnishings industry and that would certainly not fly in Scottsdale. Second, five TV's in the home (by my count) but none in the great room, the main entertaining space in the home. I realize that the room was designed around the views, but realistically, who doesn't have a TV in the great room? The home theater room is nice, but very limited on seating. Third, has anyone thought about light coming into the master in the morning via the fireplace and the sunset room. I know there are window treatments, but with the window configuration, it's almost impossible to get room darkening treatments that are effective.

Even if the home is not pure New Mexico style, I think the designers did a beautiful job overall. The furnishings are something that you might find in a home in many parts of the country, but have been adapted well for the home's style. I was part of a team that did a show home several years ago and we took a similar design approach with a great deal of success in a desert setting. I think the team has created a design that is mostly comfortable and functional for the majority of people. Anyone who wins would want to put a personal spin on the details. Great Job Linda, Jack, and the whole team.

    • I hear what you are saying about having a t.v. in the great room. I know that my family and I have gotten rid of our cable t.v. (video games etc.) as it often becomes a distraction with 100 channels plus and has a tendancy to cut into time spending with loved ones. Obviously, many folks have varied opinions on this subject. I fine high speed internet access to be a good alternative in getting information and videos from HGTV etc. which helps me lessen some of the unnecessary noise at times with the t.v.

      Continue to enjoy

TWats on January 3, 2010 at 5:58 am
    • Replys to DesertDweller and TWats. I, too, need total dark in order to sleep. Have solved the problem by installing "blackout" shades over the huge sliders in our bedroom. You can cover the ugly shades with material, or wallpaper. Or, if you have the money, you can buy lovely drapes or accordion shades that are light blocking.
Twat, we have almost no TV in Maine. 4 stations. It's wonderful. We read much more, play lots of cribbage, entertain and just sit on the porch watching nature. I get so much more done in a day. Here, I quickly get re-addicted. Tom has to get his remote control muscles back in shape in order to watch 10 things at once. Guess it's a matter of choice.

  45. Well, let's see, I can only give you my thoughts of course—nothing official.

However, our Super Fan, GAIL, does read the blogs (perhaps she'll even answer your comment directly here), and will note the questions for answering, usually in a future blog thread, with commentary below the thread title.

Also, our Senior Editor, MARY, may consider the issue of a separate blog or message board for questions and answers. Just direct a comment to her with a blog post to that effect. I do so now and then, to either MARY or GAIL, and hope to get their attention by starting off with the name in all caps.

  47. This house has the feel of New Mexico with a modern contemporary twist. I absolutely love it!!!!!! Several seem to have complained about not enough restrooms, the lack of a tile floor, but if they truly wanted the authentic adobe home, you would see the convienance of the closest cactus and dirt floors. In this ecomony I would feel truly blessed to have a home like this.

  48. Hi there everyone! Wow! I can feel the excitement over this year's Dream Home in San Pedro Overlook! I've enjoyed catching up on the blogs this afternoon.

My son who lives in Chicago sent some spices to my husband for Christmas. They are definitely perfect for the new kitchen in the Land of Enchantment. Each of them are in cute little stainless steel tins. They are:

    1. Guajillo Chilies
    2. Coriander Seeds
    3. Chili Powder
    4. Cumin Seeds
    5. Cut Cilantro
    6. Pepitas
    7. Minced Garlic
    8. Pasilla Chilies

We can't wait to try them….maybe, should we wait to open them til Giveaway Day?!?!?! I think some fabulous recipe using them would be perfect with Norteño Margaritas! ;)

  49. Love this Dream Home, and the learning that goes with it as far as different locations, architectural styles, interior furnishings and design tricks. Regardless, I'm in it to win it, and so now off I go to send in yet another daily entry…

    As always, Happy Turquoise Trails!
