A Little Spice is Nice

You love HGTV Dream Home 2010. Would give your eyetooth to fly out to New Mexico right now and take in those gorgeous sunsets. Just ain’t gonna happen with your busy life and small budget? I have a great idea: Plan a New Mexican soiree at your house and serve up our signature HGTV Dream Home margarita.

I whipped up a batch of these babies last night. Wow! I admit, I did tweak the recipe a bit: I used a jalapeño pepper and threw in a small chunk of celery, just to cut the heat. The recipe is super easy and our friends at Food Network just posted a how-to video with Monica Pedersen. Check it out! Drink a few — and HGTV Dream Home 2010 may come into clear view.

  1. Sounds fantastic! I love spicy and margaritas, I had tried a jalapeno margarita at a restaurant and was thinking of toying with a recipe for one, though I was planning on boiling the jalapeno's into the simple syrup. Well, since my family will be moving into the dream home later this year, I think my first party will include these ;)

  2. SPODutch, what were you thinking? Call in with a headache, a bad back, anything—I'm sure Monica would have gladly made up one of those margaritas for you.

  3. As MARY says in her blog commentary: "Drink a few — and HGTV Dream Home 2010 may come into clear view."

I think it would be more accurate if she'd said "Drink a few—and HGTV Dream Home 2010 may deteriorate into blurry vision."

After going out this evening for a delicious Mexican style dinner and a couple of margaritas (sans chili), I can vouch for the latter version of vision!

    Happy Turquoise Trails!

    • Coop… how do you always make me hungry!! And I can understand the blur.. I had my first drink in weeks last night (because of my cold) and WOW it made me believe that I was living in the Dream Home, living in Blog Land!!! LOL!! Have a wonderful day!

  7. MMM, wonder if the cocktail shaker she is making "New Mexico" style drinks with came from "the big apple", as did all the furniture in the house?

    Douglas/Mich on January 6, 2010 at 12:26 pm
    • As long as it does the job!

DBCoop on January 6, 2010 at 4:31 pm
    • You can probably get it at the WalMart in ABQ or Santa Fe, or at least something similar to it. As long as it does the job, it's all good.

Lessie on January 7, 2010 at 2:24 am
    • I thought the same thing about the furniture, until my wife reminded me that the HGTV dream home is only made possible by its sponsors, and those sponsors are not all from New Mexico. Many thanks to all the sponsors and great people involved for giving us all the opportunity to dream a little.

  9. I was just wondering, have you ever given thought to your loyal viewers that may not be able to drink alcohol due to medications they are on & would you be willing to come up with a drink for them that they might like & enjoy too? My wife is a loyal viewer & watches many of the HGTV shows throughout her day. She has illnesses (Fibromyalgia (chronic pain) & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) that cause her to be on multiple medications & she would not be able to enjoy that drink that was suggested. I wasn't sure the one suggested would taste very good without the alcohol added to it & that maybe there was another alternative for viewers who cannot try it.

    • Thank you to ladyrynn & the advice from reneelovesgreen!! I think that drink purposed by lady rynn would be a great one for my wife to try. She loves drinks like that & I will celebrate with her in that way for Valentine's Day to give it a shot. I truly believe she will like it, thank you sincerely for the help, ladyrynn. Also to you, reneelovesgreen!! I spend sooooo much time here admiring the home on the Dream Home's main page & throughout that it slipped my mind for a moment that I could go to the foodnetwork.com to look up some wonderful virgin drinks for my wife. See how a man can become consumed by a dream he so wants for his family! LOL Oh, and too, I am so sorry to hear you have FM too, reneelovesgreen! That is an awful illness to contend with & I hope you have loving family or friends to help you through. I wish you better health & wellness in this new year & also wish you luck with the contest. Thank you for your well wishes toward my wife, she will be touched, as am I, & bless you for your kindness & compassion.

Kevin Fox on January 8, 2010 at 4:36 pm
    • I don't normally drink alcohol, either, but If I won the dream home I guess I'd have more than enough reason to celebrate with the drink. If I wanted a non-alcohol version, I'd try adjusting the recipe.

Just replace the oz or two of alcohol with another liquid.
Maybe water, sparkling white grape juice, club soda, ginger ale, or lemon lime soda or other complementary fruit or vegetable juice of your choice.

  10. To Gail and devoted bloggers: I have a question with the rules: where they say, "limit one online entry, per valid email address, per eligible person per day," Does that mean that if you have four valid email addresses (1 work, 3 personal, for example) that you can enter four times per day for one person? Have I been entering fewer times than permitted by the rules?

Peter on January 6, 2010 at 2:14 pm
    • You may only enter once per day online, no matter how many email addresses you have.
The legalese is a little confusing, but that's what it means.

      dreamn_again on January 6, 2010 at 7:16 pm
    • Peter, the catch is that your name, address, phone, etc doesn't change. The computer will recognize that information and see it as a duplicate.

  11. Mornin' all!
All the discussion about the Casita – well I have a solution too. We plan to remove the furniture and turn this into my studio. Although I would prefer the northerly light, I will take the westerly light for morning painting. As for the open shower, what a great way to clean up! Love this home, love the tile walls. With the palette int he Casita, who needs a color wheel…

  12. My daughter is a diabetic. I love to drink Armaretto Sours. So we came up with a drink that tastes just like it for her. We used diet coke as the base and added cherry grenidene, a couple marchino cherries for looks, lemon sour base, and a little vanilla. I was really impressed how much it tastes like the real thing. Sometimes on a hot day, she will get a RT 44 from sonic with Diet coke, and cherry and vanilla flavoring and its pretty much just like it. Hope you enjoy.

  13. Monica: You look just as beautiful in this kitchen as you did in my favorite kitchen in the DH2009 in Sonoma! Your specialty drink with the Hatch Peppers is a hit & we look forward to sharing that delicious culinary concoction with you at the Santa Fe Soiree at the Winner's Circle in Santa Fe!! For we southerners that do not palette hot too well, here is my favorite method of serving up a special margarita:

    Ingredients

    1 1/2 ounce(s) Don Julio Blanco Tequila
    1/2 ounce(s) lime juice
    1/4 ounce(s) agave syrup
    1 slice(s) watermelon

    Directions

    1. Muddle watermelon and agave syrup, add rest of ingredients, and shake well.
    2. Double strain into a frozen martini glass.
    3. Garnish with a watermelon slice.

    Ya'll come back now!!

  14. For Kevin Fox: A non-alcohol Margarita recipe for your wife:

    1. Mix ice with sweet and sour mix (you can use either the pre-made mix or you can make your own).
    2. Add a splash of Orange juice or non-alcoholic triple sec.
    3. For a blended margarita, blend the ingredients in a blender until almost all the ice is gone.
    4. For a shaken margarita shake the ingredients in a shaker.
    5. Pour the margarita into salt rimmed glasses.
    6. Enjoy!

  22. - This picture really bugs with all the clutter masquerading on every plane, & everywhere in this open space with several rooms bumping into one another with dual purposes that completely informs it's not working well.
    - Counters behind this woman is full of a mess, left out, undone, & completely cluttered.
    - As this woman works, cooks or whatever on the counter it's horrendous that this open space is sullied with mess, an eyesore & very much looks overly cluttered.
    - The beauty of this quartz counter is lost with this prep being all over it & spills over from a kitchen to a workspace with cluttered messes all over it & into family/great room.
    - Butlers kitchen/pantry space is ideally for prep…cannot be used due to this home's layout in design, so all messes spill into this space & on into family room space & becomes an eyesore with a finite crappy detail you have to observe here. Great homes are not built with this style of cheesy easy conventions.
    - That is why I plan, design, build with form & function in mind as my spectrum other than as witnessed here & use does not have to connotate clutter.

PFG on January 6, 2010 at 5:01 pm
    • I understand what you're saying, PFG — all that clutter in the background makes my obsessive-compulsive nature cringe! I too would clear it off and put it away, but luckily that is easily done.

  23. MY opinion…& definitely experience too. Yes, homes are targeted in this area or any particular area that is of a certain dollar value & will increase with probabilities. Gates help, while deter, but do not stop what is sought for the taking of anything wanted by another. They do so very well in teams, wake up, or you have been just lucky as of yet.
Now, with the advent of technologies there is pro & cons with each evolution. What can give us aid truly, can have the opposite effect also. Be aware & do not be superficial until it becomes too late. Crimes, widely diversified types of crimes perculate to those that don't seek to remove opportunity, be aware, observing, & attempt to preclude from them having crime delivered upon you. Sometimes, you really have to work to find a way out of a debacle. This woman, Vesna, is right on target, I believe, in the real world, as she just might understand what it is to have crime about you. Shades, curtains & things of this nature keeps the long seeing wants of others, especially at night, at bay & from you while inside.

  26. Speaking of cheesy, did you know that the Land of Enchantment is actually the fastest growing dairy state in the nation?! New Mexico has approximately 172 dairies and is ranked 7th in the nation for milk production and 8th for cheese production, AND the state's average dairy produces 44 million pounds of milk per year. I mean, holy cow—who knew?

One of the largest cheese and whey plants (and curds and whey too) in the world is Southwest Cheese, located in Clovis, NM. They produce 40 and 640 pound blocks of Cheddar, Monterrey Jack, Colby, and Pepper Jack. Can you imagine—640 pounds? I'll bet even HGTV President Jim Samples would have to admit that's one big cheese.

Not to forget the smaller producers by any means. You could fill pages with all the wonderful locally produced cheeses, from mild to wild, including the fine goat and sheep cheeses that are carefully aged by Sweetwoods Dairy.

Follow that with giant Leprino Foods in Roswell, NM, which has the world's largest Mozzarella cheese plant, and the word cheesy for New Mexico is definitely appropriate. Now smile and say "cheesy!"

DBCoop on January 6, 2010 at 8:27 pm
    • Thanks Coop for the cheesy information:) I has no idea that NM even produced this much dairy.
I would love to see a 640 pound cheese ball. Perhaps it's like the one on that tv add.

  28. Thank you Vesna!! I truly thought that you loved the home, but your comment seem as you no longer loved this year's DH! I understand you need for privacy, but it you won, I think you would see how quickly you become comfortable with leaving the windows open and relaxed knowing that you are in a safe and secure community. You have 3 acres, there should be no one peeking in except those whom you invite!! I would add a curtain to the Casita or a different "fog" feature wall that you can get privacy at a flip of the switch. Good Luck!!

  30. No need to attack.. and no crime here! We have heard your same point over and over. I know that you are not happy with the DH, nor the process. But, what in the world do you want to do about it? And you should do a little more research on San Pedro regarding crime, as it is very low. And Crime is everywhere… It seems to me, that HGTV and their crew could never make you happy, unless they gave you the money to build the home yourself… Which, is completely opposite of their philosophy ! They showcase their Sponsors, Talent, etc. That is the way everyone makes money. Good Luck, PFG… I am just missing that positive, fun side of you.

  35. A little hypersensitive to facts. Good luck to me absolutely, thank you for being able to give a contrite condolence even as it was, little & rude. It's impersonal blogs here, blogging feedback as we are different & do not need to be hacking, socially inept with prevailing judgemental behaviors towards anyone. No attacking, just feedback & facts. We all see things differently for a divergence of different reasons & I would conclude most likely due to experiences mainly. Do not need to kill the messenger or to resound back with aversions, being hypocritical, & proving your malice. Just blogs, by no means do you need to step up with & in with fury.

I can hope for you you two, you are still able to laugh lots, share, & still care in turn. :o )

I agree, I have established myself, so long ago with being able to do things on my own. All kinds of things, particular things & this is one I carry no desire to combine them at this stage of life to another purpose.

PFG on January 6, 2010 at 10:34 pm
  38. No fury here… no judgement here. Merely, was it an open and honest debate between what is really the truth of the comment. Of course, impersonal blog are here. We are not neighbors, nor friends for years. It is attacking when you overbear with your rants and call names. (hypocrite, malice and aversive) We all see things different, correct, so why is it wrong to find out why someone dislikes the work, creativity and the process. This is the 12th year of Dream Homes and I appreciate the work, talent and sponsors involved. When there are comments made that are not factual, we all have the right to speak up and others have every right to express their dislikes, as long as it is not political or aggressive toward an individual. And, truly I wish you good luck, as I am not offended. If you think it was rude, than I think that you should go back and read through your blogs continuously bashing this home, but with no remedy.

reneelovesgreen on January 6, 2010 at 11:01 pm
    • At what point do you get with reality & gravitate to smell the roses of logical reasoning woman? I guess a woman with your conjectures? This is a place clearly for being all about marketed products by these sponsors. It's all about what is put out on display & all about getting our feedback with promoted products identified. They learn how to sell, a like, or dislike & why. It is my job to improve what is being worked, marketed & done in my professional, my trades. As a user of many & most of these products. It's my position to inform, improve, & instigate any wanted change in or with future products for better performances of our products, designs, & all around feedback to them. Why do you take on a position of owning & feel it's an obliging duty to spew your convictions & judgments. Makes, no logical sense what so ever what you have fabricated in your mind as what you might think this place is here other than what it is. Stop assuming & being so naive' to what really goes on in here or in the world. We are clearly & advidly marketed here constantly with all kinds of everything they sell with their sponsors.

PFG on January 7, 2010 at 5:14 am
      • You still don't get it! The conception of marketing being forced upon one is naive'. Feedback through the blogs will never amount to viewing by the powers for change. As you have the right to express your dislike in the process, marketing and completion; equally is mine to express the counters to your objections. Most educated here understand that without the continuous marketing, "smiling" faces to sell the products…would not be an end product. This entire Sweepstakes is a sales exhibit, as any other would be. The continuous odious has many wondering why and what?? You say that it is your position to inform… so It must be my position of dissent. There is never a judgement coming from me, so you must of misread and misunderstood. My conversation was with Vesna, whom loves the Dream Home, including the crew involved in marketing, informing, building, designing, researching, etc. from what I have read in her comments from the past.. This was merely a conversation regarding missed features, not disliked. If you must continue to attack, I will have your comments reported. I would rather to agree to disagree, but amiably. BTW,being in sales for 22 years, no scheme for me. Hoping this clears the air, as this exchange is not positive.

reneelovesgreen on January 7, 2010 at 1:45 pm
        • 1. Assuming to Assumption…you decide, "you know" something, oops, there in lies your err & yet again, you prove the word as it's 1st letters ring in it‘s value.
          2. I may interject views, thoughts, notions, differences, or a curve all together while different & not yours…it is no less valuable than your view as is.
          3. Blog entries/postings do not need you to supply retorts or quips about it. Do not need your dishing of dissent, judgment & belittling & measuring comments for a value as determination by you.
          4. Recommend study for being more informed:
Online Marketing for dummies, basics, demographics, branding basics, blogs

  43. I just dont get it. I have 4 teenage kids. We all cook together and have a wonderful time. And yes, things do get messy. But when you are done, you put it away, clean it up. The kitchen is a big gathering area for my family. The kids do their homework at the island usually also. And when we cook we usually are cooking or preparing more than one item at a time. We spread out all over the darn place. What I see in the pictures is a nice presentation. It looks comfortable, and interesting. Invites conversation and makes you feel at ease. I am not saying a kitchen should be messy, no by no means am I saying that. But they dont have to be hospital sterilized and impersonal also. Another thing I love about the butler pantry. If suddenly you have important unexpected company, it happens, you can shove everything out of sight. lol.

You know marketing & sales info that your trying to learn about? I can only ask the questions, but you have to have integrity & answer honestly for yourself? Let’s see where to start?

A "hybrid event" is an event that combines a "live" event with a "virtual" component. With the increasing popularity and awareness of virtual events, hybrid events have become a popular way of increasing attendance for a relatively low cost. This allows the event to reach a wider audience, as well as create a tool that can foster further discussions even after the event has ended.

  49. Virtual world is now changing leaps & bounds as it has since it's arrival with the web. Here's a few: "virtual team" , "virtual management", virtual organizations (me/you) as all this applies to here with HGTV. . Yes, look them up, learn a whole new wave of resources for yourself other blogging about dissent, an aversion & "your rights" hoping to be given attention, appreciation as you have made this your illusion here. closeminded is ignorance at best & why I say: 1st answer: Let the cognitive process go on longer, stop judging way too soon, as you cannot learn while u are so quick to put your judgment into effect as "you" claim you do not do, but have countless blogs about your judgments!

  50. Are you one of those that I've read stats about with web sites?
Travel web & web sites particular ways & go into certain sites
    traverse it
    - If found a web site & return to it
    — has a draw
    — return for ???
Web world another form of communication
Some feel a need to visit web sites often as found out for sensing comforts that not might be received in real world or lacking?
Real life might be lacking with love, appreciation & acceptance
    – bloggers are easy to fall into fantasy & perfect worlds about what it is that is wanted but does not able to have, feel, or receive in real world? So fantasy is easy to develope in blogs?
Another fact: some web visitors find ease in masquerades, shams & story telling with elaborations, falsehoods & mimicking
    Interesting facts being checked further:
real life loses with increases in web use similiar to addictive failures
Productive relationships take two to be present, worked & wanted & less web use only keeps a better effort with relationships
Too interesting all they possibilities? Indicators are?
