Enter to Win … Then Help Haiti

Good day, friends!

Feeling a bit helpless about the situation in Haiti? (I know I am.) Searching for some way to make a small difference? An HGTV Dream Home enthusiast (screen name alicia) came up with a swell idea … or, rather, a challenge. Every time you enter to win HGTV Dream Home 2010, why not make a small donation to UNICEF?

  1. It is so true our dreams of winning this home in NM & car are trivial compared to EarthQuake disaster. Our dreams of a better life keep us alive as well. Thank you to HGTV for keeping our dreams alive as well

    • Janice;
My husband and I also feel for the people in Hattie, no one would wish that on any town, city, state or country. But, it makes me so sad to see the people in our wonderful country be in the shape that we are in. We also are in our late "60" and we are also struggling each month to make ends meet with what we get from s/s.

I just think we should help our country more and the other countries some. I hope I dont offend anyone for we also try to give what we can, but it is truly limited.

  2. I think you've really come up with a great idea here. I'm a "starving grad student" at the state university and am in my last semester. I'd love to donate money/and or time but I'm not in a position truly to do so.

However, I have family members who are getting together with a church (my uncle) and going to Haiti to take some responsibility of the children and their families. He's very handy at building and reconstructing things. As a longtime handiman from Lousiaina he will be our family contribution.

I enter the contest because I am a widow that lost her home in 2008 due to financial difficulties as a result of medical expenses and a long term illness/lack of sufficient health insurance coverage. Hoping to help other's is my objective career wise. I know the home is a long shot and represents the highest aspirations of most struggling Americans today it helps us all to take a little time to dream..HGTV you did both you gave us a moment where we can hope and dream.

  3. What a great idea for UNICEF donations!! What a great country we live in. So many organizations and people stepping forward. I am so proud of my children. The went through their closets and gave some of their most prized posessions to box up for Haiti children.

  5. Our 8 year old daughter is sooo good with this, it is amazing what children learn in school today and have such compassion for others. Our donation is on it’s way. Melanie, from Maine

  6. Hey Lessie, I haven't gotten to the read all the blogs today , so I don't know what the topic is right now , but I just had to tell you this, i was watching the video of the little cutie pie," Connie Talbot " on you tube, and a video of another little girl came up , Her name is Sabrina, she may be very well known and I'm just not up on the singers today , but she was singing ,,,, your song, " Proud Mary, " her verison was very good, but, she started hers off a little slower than usual … but she picked up the beat and they put on a cute little show, I thought you would get a Big kick out of that and would like to view it , if you do let me know what you thought about it . she has on a red outfit. *Ali

  7. I was so excited to see that so many people are doing something to help out HAITI. I first started putting in my entry for the HGTV Dream home's back in 2003, & I haven't missed a year yet. That was a great year for me, I married my husband Brad, and we had big dreams of leaving the cold of Chicago for anything warmer.? Then like so many American's we fell on hard time's. My husband lost his job after 25 years, and we had to sell our home in 2007, Then about 9 months ago, our daughter-in-law had 2 have a procedure on her brain. The next six months were a nightmare to me! Taking care of my 2 grandchildren, & not sure if their mommy was going to make it thru. I have never prayed so much & for so long, but we were blessed. My daughter is ok– Now–I have faith–I enter everyday & I enter my son everyday. We gave up our home, our jobs, our life for our family, as anyone would do,. I am blessed, and yet I still have a dream of having my own home again…thank-you Mary for posting about Haiti too–so many people will continue to read and give and dream!

  9. THE EARTHQUAKE IN HAITI IS A WAKE-UP CALL TO THE WORLD. GOD WORKS IN MYSTERIES WAYS AND HAS SHOWN PEOPLE WHAT IS IMPORTANT AND WHAT ISN'T. IT IS SO GRATIFYING THE WAY THE WHOLE WORLD HAS RESPONDED TO HELP THESE POOR UNFORTUNATE SURVIVORS OF THE QUAKE. THIS IS THE WAY EVERYONE SHOULD ALWAYS BE, HELPING EACH OTHER INSTEAD OF WARS AND THE HORRIFIC KILLING OF OUR YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN. GOD BLESS US ALL.

    • Proper etiquette when posting a blog is to use lower case letters, unless you want to STRESS a point. Your cooperation would be appreciated.

  10. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE HGTV AND WATCH IT EVERY CHANCE I GET, WHICH IS QUITE A BIT. I ESPECIALLY ENJOY WATCHING THE YOUNG PEOPLE BUYING THEIR FIRST HOUSE. IT REMINDS ME OF MY HUSBAND AND I WHEN WE WENT LOOKING FOR OUR FIRST HOME AFTER LIVING IN AN APARTMENT FOR FIVE YEARS, HOW NAIVE WE WERE. I LOOK AT THESE YOUNG BUYERS AND WISH I WERE WITH THEM TO ADVISE THEM. SOME OF THEM ARE (AND I DON'T REALLY LIKE SAYING THIS, BUT I WILL)TO ME A BIT SPOILED AND DON'T REALLY KNOW WHAT IS IMPORTANT IN THE FEATURES OF BUYING A HOME. GRANTED TASTES CHANGE OVER THE YEARS AND WHAT YOU LOVED TEN YEARS AGO YOU DISLIKE NOW.

AT THIS WRITING WE HAVE LIVED IN OUR ONE ONLY HOME FOR FORTY EIGHT YEARS AND RAISED FIVE CHILDREN AND LOVE OUR SEVEN GRANDCHILDREN.

I DO WISH WE COULD SEE MORE SEGMENTS OF HGTV IN THIS PART OF THE COUNTRY. THERE IS SO MUCH IN THE EAST COAST TO ENJOY AND HOMES TO BUY. ANYWAY I LOVE THE SHOW AND WILL ALWAYS WATCH IT. THANK YOU.

    • If its possible, please change your input to lower-case letters, BECAUSE UPPPERCASE READS AS IF YOUR SHOUTING AT EVERYONE AND MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO READ YOUR POSTING ALL THE WAY THROUGH.

      Thanks!

  12. I give at our local store when shopping, 100% goes to Haiti and the help goes right to the people. God bless those poor people. After being in Iraq, I've seen how hopeless people can feel. Hope to "win."

  13. Haiti is still on all of our minds so I started something at work. Every year our management team makes homemade Valentine’s Day cards and sells them to the employees as a fundraiser for UW. This year we did the same with the goal to match last year's sale. We sold out. So we added another activity:
    Hearts for Haiti!
We will be using my companies Match Funds benefit so it will be doubled!
One Idea + power of many = hope for Haiti

  14. I would have loved visiting the home for the tour,. We actually considered flying out there. How about offering free airline tickets for one of the bloggers..Now that would be really great. Can't blame us for trying right? I guess we will just wait and be pleasantly surprised if we win this beautiful home.

  15. I think that the glass walled/open bathroom in the casita is weird. I would certainly not feel comfortable using that bathroom if anyone else was in the casita with me. Has anyone else noticed /commented on this?
