Drape It Like Woodrum
Good afternoon, bloggers.
Thank you to those who have been pitching in to answer questions on the blog. There’s such a demand for information about this incredible HGTV Dream Home – I appreciate the help!
Here are more answers to recently posted questions:
- * Gbeaupre and Karnie, there is a dishwasher in the butler’s pantry and one in the kitchen. Here is a picture of the kitchen washer, located to the left of the sink in the center island. I also appreciated the storage in the butler’s pantry and the recycling room, which is located around the corner from the kitchen.
- * Caryn in Illinois, San Antonito Elementary School is 5 to 10 minutes away from San Pedro Overlook.
- * Linda, Lorraine and other folks concerned about privacy in the master suite, take a look at the photos my hubby shot of me closing (and peeking through) the double doors that separate the bedroom wing from the rest of the home. Behind these doors you will enjoy your master suite; master bathroom; master closet (which, in case you missed it, is the biggest closet I’ve ever seen); the Sunrise Room; and the Laundry Room.
- * Oh, yes, Linda, I was just at HGTV Dream Home again and wanted to get a snack. It took me about nine minutes to drive to a grocery store! (My husband insists I tell you that I drive a bit fast, so it might take you 11 minutes.)
- * Terabythia, a cash prize of $250,000 was given away with two past HGTV Dream Homes. This year marks the largest cash prize in HGTV Dream Home history.
- * Julie in Tennessee, I just got off the phone with Linda Woodrum and she says the grommet drapes used to separate the master suite from the sunrise room were custom designed by Ethan Allen and displayed using hardware appropriate for the grommet drape style. To copy the look, anchor your drape rod at the very top of your wall, close to the ceiling, and make sure the curtains reach the floor.

I must also share that during my recent HGTV Dream Home trip, I witnessed the most amazing – and awe-inspiring – sunset ever. It was rich with reds, golds and streaks of purple that blended in with the clouds. It made me wish I were a painter. In this time of chaos and destruction caused by natural disasters, I find myself closing my eyes to recall that sunset. It helps me focus on my deep gratitude for my life and my family.
Your Super Fan,
Gail

Gail, thanks for the answers that you've given, and for the pictures! That sunset sounds FABULOUS!
WOW!!!!!!! I bet the sunset looks stunning, i just pray night and day and daydream about it all the time!!!
okay, I just have one quick question. does it have a.c.. some say it does others say i doesent? and how much light does solar power actually give?
Salazar0979, The Dream Home doesn't have air conditioning, but all the stuff necessary to install air conditioning is there if the owner wants it.
Ohhh thanks alot lessie
only down side is tht we reallly dont like snakes…
but im really hoping i win it but either way who ever gets it is truly blessed:)
Carlos, I hate snakes. If I win, I'm definitely going to buy several hoes, Pity the snake who comes near me when I have a hoe in my hand! For all of you who like snakes, I'll pray that my attitude improves by the time I win the Dream Home. May that, I'll pray REAL HARD that my attitude changes.
you and i both. my mother is extremely scared of them lol!
but i told her there not so many there. haha
Oh, no, Salazar0979. That comments reminds me of the childrens song, "liar, liar pants on fire!" But I understand the emotional therapy behind what you said. If you win, stop by WalMart and buy some hoes, just in case your mom needs them..
I have lived in ABQ for 18 years, and I am very active outdoors. And I can honestly say that I have never seen one snake! Now I know there are rattlesnakes, but I've never seen (or heard) one. They're more frightened of people you know!
Cindywho, since you've lived in ABQ for 18 years, I'll trust you. Therefore, I'll only get one hoe – for those just in case moments. Hopefully, I'll never use it!
lol, lessie what exactly is a hoes?
Lessie , please,! take my word for it ,if and when you do come in view of a bad snake! it is good to have a hoe in hand always to help you run as fast as you can , just know to be so careful ,they don't play , its an experience I don't ever want live through again LLL It is a feeling of being totally helpless , if you are alone.
I’m taking your word for it Ali B, especially since I’m not a snake lover. Hope you get over the emotional pain of your experience soon.
Thanks for the info on the store, I was wondering about the distance too. Can't wait to sit on the Patio and take in those gorgeous sunsets and sunrises!!
Gail – thank you for the information on the master closet, I was wondering about that. And yes there is nothing more beautiful in this world than a New Mexico sunset.
What is the jobs like in that area and how far is college from there
My off the top of my head answer (no research involved) I believe there is at least one big college in Albequerque. (40ish minutes)
Yes UNM is the closest it is in Albuquerque
Having lived in Albuquerque for almost 14 years I can tell you that the job market is pretty good, at least down in the city. Directly around the DH are several smaller towns where the jobs will be more in demand ie smaller restaurants and shops. There is a Walmart about 20 miles away in Edgewood.
In Albuquerque as in any larger city jobs run the full spectrum upto and including technical positions with Sandia Labs and Intel. The military also employs many civilians as well. There are 5 – 6 hospitals here as well. We have several call centers Verizon, Victorias Secret etc. There is also a lot Restaurants, stores, car dealers, you name it we got it.
Both Albuquerque (45 Minutes) and Santa Fe (40 minutes) host colleges including University of New Mexico, College of Santa Fe, and several community colleges.
How about nursing positions? Any ideas? I really would love to stay in public health, but I think I read that there is a medical clinic nearby? I thought about driving to Santa Fe to work. Just prefer smaller town feel. Any thoughts about the road condition that direction? I live in Pueblo, Colorado, so am almost a neighbor…;^)
Thanks a bunch!
Santa Fe was pretty much snowed in yesterday. The vacinity of the dream home was icy in spots and sleeting in the afternoon when my son was driving through. Diving north to Santa Fe is going to take longer than to ABQ and nasty during winter weather. I have a nurse friend living in Santa Fe. There are jobs.
There is a high demand for health professionals in actual small communities. NM is progressive in public health initiatives. I doubt you would have difficulty finding a position to suit you.
Fantastic! Thanks Subuquerque! Love your name…is it a combo of your name and town? Anyhoo…I would love to work in a physician's office or clinic in a small town or do local public health. I took Spanish in high school and can sort of piece things together, but that is what "Rosetta Stone" is for I guess.I lived in Santa Fe in the late 1960's and I just loved the town. I'm not surprised about the snow. It was cold when I was there. I live in Colorado, and we get "Albuquerque lows" and that means cold and moisture. So snow wouldn't be too much of an issue. If I can work out an early retirement, I wouldn't have to work unless I wanted to.Then I could just hole up by the fireplace and veg out! Now all I have to do is win!
I like your plan Susanna.
Te he he ~ If you win Susana, please come back and tell us if Rosetta Stone works too!
Will do!
Plenty of nursing positions in Albuquerque, Lovelace, UNM Hospital, Presbyterian, to name a few. Variety of small clinics, also. Scenic 14 takes you to Santa Fe, beautiful drive.
The job situation in ABQ is actually very bleak!! I live here now and the unemployment rate is very high. there are the jobs recommended, but they are very low paying and it would not be cost effective to drive to any of them from the Dream Home!
ps I work in HR so I am very familiar with the job situation here, sorry MikeP
Great info. I have lived in Los Angeles all of my life but it has been really tough these last few years. I have been unemployed for almost two years. The good thing is that I'm able to continue my education and I am currently trying to figure out which university I will attend after completing my education at community college. I would love to relocate…but I needed to have a little information before even thinking about it. I would probably have a heart attack if I won that dream home. I watch all of the programs on HGTV and just fantasize about maybe one day getting a home (before I'm too old).
The University of New Mexico is in Albuquerque, which appears to be a little over a 30 minute drive. The following website is a list of all colleges and universities in New Mexico, including their location and type of school (ie., private, public, community college).
http://www.univsource.com/nm.htm
There are also more specific posts (by people who live there) in regards to types of jobs in the area under the blog about the shawl…there are a few and they answer different aspects of it…if you are really curious then you may want to check those out.
I was thinking the same thing about jobs and colleges. The $500,000 prize that comes with the house would help me to go back to college to earn a degree while enjoying this lovely home. This year's dream home is going to be a real "Dream Come True" and a fresh new start in life for some lucky winner. Of course, I'll be hoping and praying that we (my husband and I) are this year's winners. But sincerely, good luck to all. Thank you HDTV for this great life-changing contest that gives people like us something to hope for in these hard economic times.
Of course you would have to pay about $1.25 million in income tax next year before you could think about returning to school. Good to dream though. Sell the house, pay the tax and then go to school would be my plan.
Gail, Thank you for showing those double doors to the Master Suite. Now I know they're really there. Did you take a snap of that gorgeous sunset?
Katydid, not only did we see the doors, but they're huge! That's one huge house!
Gail, thanks for the great description of the home and the awesome sunset. You answered some good questions. I'd like to find something out. In taking the 3D tour and also checking out the floorplan for the DH, I noticed a discrepancy. The floorplan shows a bathroom connected to the home office, or between the home office and dining room. But, I certainly couldn't see one in the 3D tour.
Myrna, the guest bathroom simply wasn't filmed to include in the 3D tour, but it's definitely there!
If you go to the pictures of the Home Office, pictures 11 and 12 or 12 and 13 show the bathroom. really great sink in there. It also shows a tiny bit of the hall that leads into the office. There is also a closet in that hallway. A guest coat closet I'm guessing. Hope that helps.
Thanks Cathy for mentioning about the hallway closet. I was wondering if there was a closet or not. You can never have enough storage space.
I agree. It took me forever to find that closet. I hope it's not a utility closet. I wish they had put a large coat closet near the garage entrance. Our family (especially when the grandkids are visiting) have a ton of boots, coats, hoodies etc. that need a closet. I'll figure something out when I win
)
Cathy, I think the wall across from the shelves in the recycling room would be great for multiple coat racks!
Cathy, If you look at what they call the "recycling room" (which is the way you enter from the garage), you'll see that there are several tall cabinets that I'm sure would serve well as a "family" closet leaving the office hall closet as a guest closet. I have the same problem as you do except my kids are home and forever throwing coats and boots off everywhere. The room I'm mentioning seems more like a multi-purpose, pantry, mudroom and recycling area. Anyway, the garage itself is plenty big enough to put a coat and boot area just outside the door to the recycling room.
Great idea, MomK.
Hi, Gail,
Any news on the tours. My daughter and I are going to Albuquerque this weekend and we are dying to go do the real tour!
Thanks,
My question exactly! I live in ABQ and we'd love to take a tour
Me too! Haven't heard a peep about it lately.
Enjoy your tour!
My husband and I actually had some time this last weekend to drive up to the Dream Home Community! And I must share… that any family that has this awesome opportunity to win this house will definitely be very happy.
The schools environments are also something to be very excited about… much smaller classrooms! As well, there is shopping and something that I very much enjoy, nearby… a ceramic studio and store for clay lovers. I stopped in there and was so excited to see that they have adult and children classes for multiple ways of working with clay! I’m looking forward to a Raku Firing class! You should check it out while you’re there.
You should definitely check out the sunsets Gail mentioned! There are no sunsets like the sunsets here in New Mexico!
Have a great time!
I'm surprised this information hasn't been published yet. Seems last years house was announced before now. I'm planning a trip to New Mexico also and sure would like to know the information. Hopefully, we will here something soon.
hope so! Have fun
I haven't heard anything as to them actually happening, but this was in the article about the lien on the house:__" He also pointed out that tours of the home will benefit East Mountain High School. Tours are running $20 a visitor and will go on from Jan. 7 to March 14. Gately said there will likely be 6,000 to 10,000 visitors. In addition to the HGTV home, Gately said. The HGTV Dream Home show is scheduled for Jan. 1 and the home will be given away on Mar. 15. "__Maybe they cancelled them until the lien is figured out??? I don't know. The original article has been posted on here before, but here it is again because someone will ask what I am talking about: http://www.mvtelegraph.com/index.php/news/2397-li…
Thanks, adisneyfamily.

OMG, there REALLY ARE double doors to the Master Bedroom Suite after all! Thanks for the photos, GAIL, courtesy of your hubby. They should go a long way towards dispelling the myth of a lack of privacy for the the Master Suite.
I know we bellow floggers…that is, I mean, fellow bloggers, have at times done TOO GOOD of a job, in some cases, in our rush to answer questions as quickly as possible, but all has been well-intentioned. Where we have strayed from the path, I'm sure you will set us aright.
So, okay, you may drive a bit fast, GAIL, and it takes you about 9 minutes to the grocery store. Well, I'll admit it here and now, I think I could pare that down to about 7 minutes!
Thank you for a wonderful new thread, and a goldmine of information from our Super Fan in pursuit of truth and the American way from the Turquoise Trail Dream Home itself. Your focus on providing answers, insight, and well, even unexpected tidbits of information (like where to purchase Monica's turquoise shawl) are always appreciated.
Thank you Gail for the Answers, I guess all the glamour had me over looking it!! Thank you so much!! I love this home and you truely make people excited to enter and hope to win!! Thank you
By the way, great thread title. Very creative—I love it! Is that you, MARY, behind those titles?
Gail- thanks for modeling the doors- too funny ;o)
I had a question regarding the HGTV Special on the 2010 home… I noticed when all the furniture was delivered from Ethan Allen, the truck was out of Colorado?… Why didn't the furniture come from the Ethan Allen store there in Albuquerque? I know there is one, I drive pass it all the time! haha
I had to laugh when (on the video) they said they were in New York to find some inspiration from the southwest…beautiful stuff and I know they did buy other things locally…it was just the comment and timing that made me laugh.
The warehouse they used for the whole house of furniture and accessories is probably in a different location than the usual storefront, you'd visit as a customer.
Thanks Gail. The sunset sounds wonderful. There are still questions I have like… is there air conditioning, an alarm system and garage door openers. That's one big door to have to lift. Also could you try and get pictures of the inside of the kitchen cabinets? Are there fun things like pull out drawers, spice racks, pantry pull outs or pot and pan drawers. You must be having so much fun. I would love to see the tile walls and fireplace. I'm sure the pictures don't do justice to the colors.
The other blogs have answers to the AC- short answer- no…for more in depth answer check out the other blogs. As for alarm and garage doors…I haven't seen an actual answer…I know it was asked and not immediately answered- didn't check back much on that topic. Hope you find the answers you are looking for.
Thank you, DBCoop, for the bathroon information! Looks like it will be in a great location for guests. (This is my first comment as a Newby and I appreciate your good response.)
Congratulations on your first (and now second) comments…jump on in and join the crowd! We really don't bite.
and we rarely growl, unless we're having a bad day or someone asks about taxes…
I don't know, I thought someone was throwing firewood. Oh yeah, that was at the rattle snakes and coyotes.
) Really a very helpful group, thanks to all.
I don't know, but you can definitely see firewood in those new videos!
So true, WyoGirl!
Welcome Myrna, thanks for joining our blogging community! DBCoop is a great resource. He'll have plenty of good responses.
Thanks for answering all the lingering questions Gail! The new pictures of the double doors helps clarify the layout of the Master Suite. The sunsets in New Mexico are AMAZING, in my travels there I have also enjoyed watching the thunderstorms during monsoon season. I can only imagine the amazing views from the HGTV Dream Home during those amazing thunderstorms.
Sarah, for some reason, it's hard for me to imagine a monsoon season in a dry climate. Lush, tropical climate, yes, but not a dry climate. Will be exciting to see them, hope they're not similar to the severe thunderstorms in Texas.
OH Gail, Thank you for a new post with answered questions and the showing of the Master Suite doors. That is definitely a first look.( thanks also to your hubby). I enjoy spending hours looking over the photos and videos and reading the blogs and was waiting in anticipation for new info on the Dream Home! It truely is a brilliant wok of art with design, decorating, landscape, and scenery. What shall we do with our time after the giveaway??? Hopefully, enjoy entertaining at the home:)
Turn our focus to the Green Home giveaway. Then after that, the diynetwork, blog cabin giveaway.
Wow Gail
You are either really short or those doors are really tall.
LOL! I'd guess those are very tall doors to go with the very high ceilings!
There are high ceilings in this home. BTW, in a previous post, I noted that there were 4 hinges on those doors — that usually means high doors.
If you look at the top of the picture you can see the ceiling in the other room…it doesn't look like much clearance; so, I am guessing tall doors…kind of cool, but might take some getting used to.
I do believe Gail is five feet, eight inches tall. How's that for a perspective on the door height!
Thanks for all the info. on the Dream Home 2010, This house is sooooooo unbelievable, I wouldn't care if the grocery store was an hour away, it has enough room to store food for a year-lol, it's gorgeous darlin!!!! Thanks gorgeous, for the details!!!! Michele
I agree with you! I wouldn't care either! Lots of room in the recycle room to stock up on food!
It makes it so that you don't have to run to the gracery store all the time…it's nice to have fresh fruits and vegetables, but you can grow them fresh and then freeze them.
Amen!
Here is an interesting site for weather statistics for Albuquerque. They have compiled data for the last 54 years.
http://www.weatherbase.com/weather/weatherall.php…
Now if they could just provide the data for the coming decade or two, I'd know just what to expect. One thing for sure, it will definitely be a four-season wonderland.
on weather channel's website it gives the average for each day of the month (not forecasts) if you go to monthly forecast…the zip for the house is 87047 if that helps you look it up.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I was having withdrawal. You mention a pic of the dishwasher int he kitchen, but didn't include it in your post. I know it is there. To the left of the sink in the island. So it is OK that you didn't post the photo. Others may not agree with that assessment. Keep up the good work. Not so long till your next post please.
Thanks Gail! I have a few questions for you….Are you bummed-out that you can't enter to win any of these fabulous homes? Where do you live, & do you get paid to be the "super-fan"? How do you become the "super-fan"? It seems like an awesome job! I just became familiar w/ the HGTV giveaways last year.
By the way, I have absolutely no questions about the dream home! I think it is amazing!!! By the way you do a great job!!
I think that GAIL got the job as Super Fan with a wink and a smile. The folks at HGTV were smitten, realized her star potential, and hired her immediately!
Okay, that's really only MY version. I'm sure there was a bit more to it than that!
Actually Coop, I heard she was such a pest trying to get into the Sonoma Dream Home, that they hired her. That way she could go in the home legitimately & they wouldn't be bothered by her so much! Of course if I lived in Sonoma, like her I would have probably been a pest too!
As for getting it, there was a contest/audition thing…if you google HGTV super fan you can still pull up old links.
Truely there is so much though and care that went into this home. Beautiful!
I have one question: IS THERE Air conditioning?
I have looked through everything and I just don't see it so didn't know if it was on the roof with the solar panels. Yes That's right say hello to cheap electric on this amazing home!
Thank you,
Michelle Rutherford – Houston, Texas
Since you are from Houston, I can understand your concern for A/C! From my meager knowledge of this Dream Home I would offer the following:
It seems that vent have been pre-installed throughout the home to accomodate A/C.
Due to the high altitude (>6,000 ft.) and LOW HUMIDITY (I'm sure you can appreciate that!), it is questionable as to whether A/C is really needed.
I'm sure that others will weigh-in.
I was wondering if that was the case. Yes Texas is Hot, VERY Hot with 100-130% humidity all the time. hahhahaha but okay at least there are vents if one wanted to add it. Sounds great. Again there is so much thought and care in this home I knew it was not over looked, and totally considered,
Thank you for your reply!
Do you know what the rules are on fences? Our dog "Butters" would be all over the place if not confined even on 3+ acres, he is a yellow lab, enough said.
Click on the MAIN page of this great web site, scroll down to San Pedro Overlook, and click on that link. You will be able to learn so much about the HOA & community where this Dream Home is located.
Also, read previous blog threads. I'm sorry, I don't have a dog and really haven't paid enough attention to the regulations; but this information is available. Enjoy your Dream!
From reading previous posts, it appears that fences are not allowed. However, there is always the invisible fence for dogs as a last resort. I was wondering if the HOA would allow at least a dog run area. I find it hard to believe that the CC&Rs would actually include a prohibition on fencing of any kind. We thought of putting artificial turf in the dog run area for low (or no) maintenance and permanent green color.
A while ago on a previous thread a blogger posted that they called SPO and was told pet areas can only be enclosed with invisible fencing or adobe walls — no perimeter fencing allowed.
Good morning. I was able to find the community blogging site. In it, there was a list of neighbors that HAD dogs and the various breeds within the community. It appears like a very dog friendly area. Maybe the list is available….just in case a member of the family gets loose.
I've never had the invisible fence for dogs….not sure if I like the idea of zapping the pet to keep him/her within the area. What happened to taking dogs for a walk? Do people no longer do this?
Okay awesome so you can have a fence it just has to be an adobe wall. I can live with that. and i love the idea of artificial turf, dogs+ dirt + water equals big mud pies. Our lab he is a digger, so an area off the back where his terribly deeds could not be seen sounds good. Still dreaming and wondering if Taxes on this prize will run more than the $500 cash prize?
Does anyone know how much tax we would have to pay on this 2 mil prize bundle?
Thank you again everyone, I love HGTV, and have it on every day. Property virgins, investment properties – makes me wish we lived up north and had a basement.
Check out the "For The Newbies" blog. There are MANY posts RE: taxes. Happy reading, H_S.
invisible fence??…but might be scary what with all the other animals that could be lurking around out there….eeeeeeee
I have lived outside of Denver at 6000 feet for over 30 years in a high desert environment like ALBQ. Trust me, you NEED a swamp cooler, especially in temps over 90 degrees! Yes, it's low humidity which is MUCH more comfy than Texas humidity! Yes, it cools off at night so you need at least a sheet if not a blanket to sleep with. But, you still NEED a swamp cooler for the days, especially with all those windows that don't appear to have shades, drapes or other protection from the sun's heat and deteriorating effects on furniture. I was also wondering where the ceiling fans are? How about a cover for the patio so you can enjoy that gorgeous patio and view without wilting!?
Thanks, Cathy! I just went & looked at the home office photos you suggested. The bathroom so cool! I absolutely love the sink! I'm impressed that it also includes a shower. I will look again at ALL the photos just in case I missed anything else.
I was soooo surprised about the shower too! Love the faucet too! I think I'll look at all of the photos too, just in case I missed something!
I really find the photos much more detailed than the videos. When I go back for second (or third) looks, I always go to the pics.
Oh, I do LOVE this home. It is just exquisite. I am a professional chef and simply MUST live to cook in this fabulous kitchen. Good job on this home, HGTV!
It IS beautiful! I am NOT a professional chef. The other day my daughters were asked by a friend, whose cooking they prefer when they come for a visit. They said my husband's; then, immediately apologized to me. I have no problem with that. They have good taste. I shared this info with my husband and said if we were to win this home, he'd get the actual kitchen….but the pantry was MINE.
Janet, were you surprised that there's only one oven in the kitchen?
If I win this home, I will totally take you up on cooking in the fabulous kitchen lol and you are welcome to stay at the Casita in the meantime.
Here is the weather stats for La Madera it is closer to Sandia Park than Albuquerque.

CALLING ALL HGTV BLOGGERS!
My dear blogging buddies, being the HGTV Super Fan I am…okay, I’m not a real live super Super Fan like Gail who we all know and love…more like Lynn the faux super Super Fan…anyway….I have been researching and googling, and researching and googling, for quite some time now with regards to ‘Ley Powell’ and that super-fantastic steel sculpture by the back patio that we all love. WELL….
IT HAS PAID OFF!
I am so, so happy to share this information with all of you!!!!! Can you guys feel my excitement?
‘Ley Powell’ is actually ‘Lay Powell’…and what a fantastic guy and talented artist he is…he’s fascinating!
(stay tuned….continued)
Did he do any other art work at the DH other than the "Rain God"? Love all of the artwork! Especially the "Rain God"!
Katmom, is that the actual name of the steel structure?
Gail, thanks for the time-hack to the nearest grocery store. Those of us from the area would say that driving 30 minutes to an hour in NM is not a big deal. You get to cover a lot more ground than spending the same amount of time in rush-hour D.C. traffic and the scenery is beautiful! I do have a really nerdy question, though. Will the $500K cover the taxes from such a large (and amazing) prize? It would be a shame to win and then jump immediately into a federal tax lien!
There is a full (long) break down in the Newbie section that I did straight from the IRS website…lots of numbers and lots to absorb…but the scoop is there. Yes, you will owe, but it can be do-able…the full explanation is in the other blog.
I was wrong on which section…while it is covered some in Newbie…the main posts are in the Shawl blog.
(continued)
Lay Powell lives in Ruidoso, New Mexico, which is approximately 3 hours from Albuquerque and about 3 ½ to 4 hours from Santa Fe. Ruidoso is located in the south central end of New Mexico above El Paso.
Lay Powell, also known as Mr. Petroglyph (how cool is that?), is an artist who works in about 13 different mediums and is always looking for new ways to present his art. He was born into a family of artists and his mother realized his talents when he was about 5 years old after she discovered his ‘coloring’ on the wallpaper behind a plant in his home. Is that too great? He is a graduate of the University of New Mexico and had many studies including Archeological Field Illustration. He is known for large metal sculptures which are often on display at the ‘Y’. The ‘Y’ is a tract of land located in Ruidoso near a highway crossing. They often put large sculptures on display in this area.
(stay tuned….(continued)
The metal sculpture was one of his ''Shaman'' collection. Kokopelli (spelling wrong); but he is the happy laughing one!
Lynn, you are amazing!!! I'd give the Super Fan to you.
Lessie! You are too kind! I think we are on the same schedule this morning!
Living the Dream!
No it will not. You the 2 million plus prize will go directly to your income which will catapult you into the highest tax bracket. Which in 2009 was 35%. Never mind your state income tax. For me that is 5%. so I figure I will owe ~$800,000 in taxes in April after winning.
Welcome Back, Mary!! Missed your teases about your latest trip to the DH. Been waiting to hear the newest news. Upon seeing the new pix, my first thought was: " My goodness – she must only be about three feet tall!!!!" Never thought about the doors being large. Whew –glad that was a response. Are the other doors that tall? Now, fill us in on the other things you learned in this trip….any new answers to all the questions on the blogs? I've decided that they should cut off entries on Friday, Jan 22. Then my chances of winning are much improved. Could you please consider that? I think it's a great suggestion. More photos and news please! I'm still having fun and I'm still the one (to win, that is!!)
Excellent idea, irish387, to suggest cutting off the entry period on Friday, Jan 22, if not sooner! There are just TOO MANY dreamers in love with this home, and my chances of winning are being whittled down from slim to infitesimal!
"Slim to infinitesimal" chance of winning. That's why the Dream Home is for dreamers. Thanks, Coop.

So, back to the sculpture at the HGTV Dream Home 2010…this sculpture was one in a series of three sculptures. The first one was “Keeper of the Sky and Wind”. The second was “Guardian of the Animals”. And, the third, was our most beloved “The Rain God #2”. You can see the rain coming off of his arms and his kilt…..that’s rain….how fun is this to see this through the artist eyes? I’m loving this!
Another fact? The first sculpture named “The Rain God” was purchased and shipped to Pennsylvania (where I’m from…gotta’ find it) to be placed outside of a Mexican restaurant. Oh, I so have to find out where that Mexican restaurant is! It was shipped from a gallery on a cattle truck because it was 12 foot tall (just like the HGTV Dream Home Rain God) and was very expensive and hard to figure out how to ship it across the United States to the east coast.
(stay tuned…continued)
It just keeps getting better—a four-part series of sculptures! Hmmm, "The Rain God"—do you think I could get him (her?) to call off the rains here on the West Coast?
Hi, DBCoop. Must say, I've been worried about you. I take it you and your property are safe as of this time. We have dear friends living south of LA in Rancho Palo Verde. In the past they have had damage, but since then the neighborhood has taken some measures to direct the floods of water and mud away from homes. I know all the bloggers are thinking of you. Please give us updates.
It was a series of three…why did I type four? Yikes! The fourth, "The Guardian of the Night Chant, came later as you can see in the continued comment.
Living the Dream!
Lynn, you leave no stone unturned. Your investigative skills blow me away. Have you personally spoken with Lay?
Lessie – I did….is that weird?!?!?! Do I need to get a life? Or, is HGTV blogging my life? Well, I will certtainly have to contemplate that throughout 2010 I guess.
Anyway, I did contact Lay and let me tell you what a wonderful guy he is…great wit and talented artist all wrapped up into one. It took me months to figure out who he was…it was such a mystery to me. I was hesitant to contact him but ai am so glad I did. He had heard that his sculpture was a an HGTV home but did not know too many of the details. I gave him the website information so that he could see for himself…he was so happy and proud to be part of this home. My hope is that HGTV will use him in a vlog…his sense of humor and passion for his work would be great for all to view…working on that one.
(continued)
A HUGE thank you, Lynn, for your tenacity in tracking down the real LAY Powell, artist of the "Shaman Series" sculpture that guards the Dream Home.
That was very sneaky of HGTV to lead us off track…. However, when it comes to HGTV bloggers, neither rain, nor snow, nor dark of night shall keep us from uncovering the facts!
True Coop. No wonder the average lazy blogger like me couldn't find info on Lay or his series.
(continued)
"The Rain God" was purchased for this Dream Home at the Chumani Gallery on the Turquoise Trail. I am not sure who at HGTV purchased it but I bet Linda and Jack had fun shopping for it! By the way, since "The Rain God" was sold for use at the Dream Home, there is a fourth 12 foot sculpture which has replaced it called "Guardian of the Night Chant". Lay Powell has not done many woman in his series of sculptures so this one is truly wonderful as it is a goddess he found while researching and studying his petroglyphs.
I have had so much fun researching this and it is truly a bonus to find out that this spectacular sculpture was created by a truly enchanting artist, Lay Powell!
Living the Dream!
I'm enjoying all of the benefits of your hard work, Lynn; each time I watch one of the Dream Home videos and The Rain God comes into view, it's great to know so much about it!
Regarding the "The Rain God" by the remarkable artist, Lay Powell, I've found my water feature at last. Gotta go back and look at the "rain drops". Why didn't someone tell me about this sooner? Thanks so much for the info, Lynn.
Lynn, are there photos of the other sculptures? Will google to see if I can find them.
Gail,
Do you know what the estimated annual property taxes are for the dream home? I love the high desert. I lived in Pueblo, Colorado for 14 years before moving to the Seattle area. I miss the sunshine, deep blue sky and the distinct seasons. The desert colors are amazing! I would gladly take up residence in the 2010 Dream Home!
Hi Pat! Fellow Puebloan! I'll bet you do miss the sun! I'll say hi to it for you tomorrow and tell it you miss it…maybe it will shine for you! ;^)
Property taxes are covered in depth on the Newbie blog…check that out for a fuller answer and explanation, but it is said to run between $4,500 to $10k depending on what answer you want to go with…it's worth checking out the other blog if you truly want a solid answer.
OK, I've read this several times now and I just have to ask straight out: what the heck and/or WHERE the heck is this "Newbie Blog"?! Link, please? I've searched this blog to no avail so I'm assuming it's somewhere else? Por favor!
Hi SingleMomInAShoebox! Yikes! That IS a small home! To find the Newbie blog, go to the top of the page and click on blogs. It should take you to the main blog page. Scroll down and keep on scrolling until you see "For the Newbies". Hope this helps!!!
Ah! Wonder why the search function didn't work? Thanks, Susanna! Much appreciated.
(And yes – the Shoebox IS a very, very small home. Actually, now we've moved and are living in a friend's basement. Tough in other respects but at least it's BIGGER!! LOL)
From a shoebox to a basement, looks like you are moving up (or should I say down?) in the world! ;^) I have never gotten the search to work, so don't feel alone!
Hello Dream Home Bloggies – As an Albuquerque resident for 14 years I have spent a lot of time here and Santa Fe and driving in between. I'd like to offer my services as a source to answer any (OK most) Albuquerque or Santa Fe specific questions. Unlike a lot of you I do not check the blog every day but most of the time. I find that I don't sleep very well on nights that I check this site.
I agree on the sunsets / rises being spectacular. Someone had mentioned seveveral day ago that watching the Balloon Fiesta from the house would be cool. Big problem with that is a 12,000 foot mountain in between the DH and the Fiesta field in Albuquerque.
Anyways please feel free to direct any Albuquerque / Santa Fe questions my way and I will try to answer them.
Best of Luck to all of you
What is the economy like right now Mike? My husband and I have been thinking about moving to Albuquerque for years now and this may be our chance! lol….hey, someone has to win! Do you think it would be difficult to find a basic administrative job there? Something in the 40k range.
Thanks!
It's improving like everywhere else. The job section in the sunday paper has always been sort of a benchmark for me in my job searching. It was pretty slim throughout the last year but we have been seeing it increase. For your admin jobs you'll probably have to look beyond the East Mountain area (location of DH) into either Albuquerque or Santa Fe. Lots of city, state, and federal government offices there. Albuquerque has a strange economic stratus with not as much middle class (40K range). Lots of people in the lower range and lots in the upper range. You can check online at the Albuquerque Journal for their sunday classified section.
All that being said Good luck in this contest as well as your job search.
Thanks! Just thinking the job would keep me busy during the week and be enough money to vacation on and shop. My husband and I have been thinking of moving to ABQ for a long time…no reason to move there except that we loved it when we vacationed there. We love the New Mexican food and the weather and would love to be involved in the community!
Have a great week!
Funny…when I stay up on the DH blog at night, I find myself dreaming in blog style rather than my normal dreams which are like a movie…what I mean is that instead my dreams have scenes and then I have to do the drop down menu to get to the next chapter or scene of my dream. Sorry- your post reminded me of that.
Oh, somebody else has crazy dreams. Goody. Have you ever tried to do a cross word puzzle in your dream?
What is the public school system like in that area? I'm a teacher and would need a job, and a good place for my babies to learn!
The DH is in the East Mountain Cluster of the Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) It is the biggest district in the state. And a little further away there is also Rio Rancho District. Both districts are excellent. And I am pretty sure that both are always looking for teachers. By the way thank you for your dedication to education. I have several friends who are teachers at various schools in both districts and they have always said good things.
To answer Christie409's question: to my knowledge they seem to be weathering fine. I do not believe that teachers have lost their jobs to stay in budget, but I am not directly involved, only what I hear on the news. Be sure to checkout http://www.aps.edu
Hope this helps! God Bless
Thanks so much! That is helpful. I appreciate the website too! LOVE my job! IT is definitely hard work but sooo worth it! I just hope I can afford to LIVE in the DH when I win it!! ;o)
Hmmm…Wonder if they need school nurses…
I'm looking to relocate Dream Home or not. I'm an elementary school teacher…how are the local schools weathering this financial crises? Are they cutting teachers left and right to keep in budget?
See reply to Katmom33 above
A HUGE "gracias" to MikeP. This is amazing, to have a real live resident there to answer Qs! And I have a gracious plenty (to quote my dear departed granny) but I'll start with this one:
Snakes…?
I have this …. {{shudder}} thing … about snakes.
Are they common in this area around homes? Is there anyway to … y'know, keep them AWAY?!
Definitely not a deal breaker. Should I win this, I'll deal, I promise! But forewarned is forearmed. Or knowledge is power. Some such thing.
UPDATE On Our "Rain God"…
There is a large body of Lay Powell's work displayed at the Chumani Gallery in Madrid. In addition, there will be in the future a way to access Lay's works…a website will be created and his works of art will be able to be viewed at http://www.laypowell.com. He is also active in the Ruidoso Regional Council for the Arts, located in “The Gallery” at 1712 Sudderth Drive in Ruidoso, is a 501(c) (3) organization, formed for the purpose of enhancing the quality of life for area residents and all that visit this beautiful Village. The RRCA is a support system to area artist and a liaison to culture organizations. The goal of the Arts Council is to help promote public awareness, participation, appreciation and accessibility of the arts and to support and implement the preservation and growth of the region’s artistic and cultural resources.
I'm loving this!

Lynn, since I am a Harley rider (ever since Ivan took my sailboat), everytime I read or see MADRID, I think about the movie, "Wild Hogs," set partly in Madrid! There is more to this story than I care to publish here. I will check out the link that you kindly provided, and post more. Live that dream, Lynn!
Hi there H_S! That darn Ivan took your sailboat? Ugh! Well, I'm happy you have another toy to play with when you get some down time.
I just wanted to let you know that the website for Lay Powell is not up and running yet but hopefully it will be soon. If I hear of when it is a go, I will let you know.
I think I will rent "Wild Hogs" this weekend so that I can enjoy the scenery in Madrid. I heard it's just gorgeous!
Living the Dream!
Lynn, you won't regret watching the movie. According to the film's director, MOST of the movie was filmed in NM!
The movie was recently on television. My hub's comment, "Sure would like to rent that one and watch it…commercial free." Of course…..as soon as I figured out it was filmed in NM, I HAD to look it up to see if it were near the DH area.
I first watched it at the theater. I've seen the television version, and alot was cut out. I would reccomend renting it!
H_S, I'm renting the movie today.
A Dream Home Blast from the Past: a primer for those HGTV dreamers who need to know everything about Dream Home 2010, and it's glorious fourteen year history from years gone by.
1997 HGTV Dream Home – Jackson Hole, Wyoming (HGTV's very first Dream Home)
"Jackson Hole, Wyoming was known for such exciting features as being the home of the world's largest ball of barbed wire as well as for its excellent skiing and winter sports. In 1997, however, it made history by being the site of the first HGTV Dream Home. HGTV calls the first Dream Home a "warm and cozy Western retreat" with spectacular views of the Grand Teton Mountains. In order to ensure that the Dream Home would stand up to the tough Jackson Hole winters, all of the elements for the solid log house were fabricated in Finland and shipped to Wyoming."
Winner of the 1997 Dream Home Giveaway: Michele Rambo of Tulsa, Oklahoma
I live an hour away from Jackson Hole, and I have been so curious about that house. I can't find it, and I really have looked. Any idea in which subdivision it is located?
Such a tease! I know you have more photos to show…
Hopefully some like the child's room and guest room closets…I haven't asked but I have been curious if there is room/organization enough to put my children's toys away besides their clothes…the house is too pretty to let toys be strewn about.
Speaking of teases, I hope you didn't mind my teasing you about the Casita glass wall. (The last time I looked at it a flash of it being covered with cafe curtains came to mind, and that really made me giggle). I just want to thank you, SPODutch, for your excellent hard work on the Dream Home. I'm sure it is much appreciated by all of us dreamers.
Since you are a local do you know where is the nearest Catholic church or chapel?
Kudos Lynn for the interesting background on our statue "The Rain God". I say "our" as I think we are all feeling a part of this wonderful dream! Great research job!
Thanks VA Brenda!
Living the Dream!
Gail You have described a sunset I ivision regularly,,, since I lived there for 20 yrs and I really miss the beauty. I Love the dream house so if i win this will all be a Dream come true….Thanks to all for the chance
I found a previous post referring to the "Quick Vote" at the Dream Home main page. The vote is regarding your choice of location for Dream Home 2011. The choices and current scores are:
Montana 42%
New Jersey 17%
Rhode Island 19%
Louisiana 22%
Check it out and add your vote, fellow bloggers!
R.I.
You beat me to the punch! I was just getting ready to do that…though Montana is now up to 47%…the question is will they take our poll seriously and put the location there???? Sadly, no Iowa requested by others and myself ;o)
I thought Boulder, Colorado was one of the choices?
Ooops!! My bad! I was thinking of the 2011 GREEN HOME location possibilities! LOL !!
I think I missed that…what were the options for the Green Home? Boulder does sound good though!
I was going to vote, but they didn't have a "none of the above choice". They should try that option next time & see what the results are! LOL
I agree, Ed in Oregon.
I had to chose Montana simply because I love the state and the people. I don't really care where HGTV builds the next home. I'm going to love it!
Subuquerque, we think alike.
I saw that a while back but thought Hawaii was one of the choices.
I like Myrna's suggestion for Colorado…but I would request Fort Collins. The kids and I visited it over the winter break. This is a fantastic city with an absolutely adorable downtown and tons of culture and lots of outdoor activities. The winters are mild and so are the summers, plus 300 days of sunshine every year. If we don’t win the Dream Home this is where we are relocating to.
Between the options listed above I think I'd like Rhode Island.
I met someone from Fort Collins….YEARS ago at a retreat. And if the people there are anything like my friend…it must be a friendly place.
I thought Hawaii had been one of the choices, too. ????
Knowing how question lists are typically set up for responses, I feel sure that my vote of Rhode Island would NOT be the location. Yes, I know there are four choices…..but there's only TWO options from the way the poll is presented.
Curious as to what you mean by there are only "TWO" options?
Having studied how polls/questions are presented……
It is typically the first/last options that are being encouraged. Therefore, Montana/Louisiana are the 2 options.
One year….the clues to the next DH was in the video on one of the televisions. I just saw Buffalo in one of the videos. So…..I will guess Montana is the next location. Unless, someone from Louisiana can convince me there are buffalo there. And no, I'm not referring to buffalo wings…..even though…those ARE delicious. lol
Oh how clever and I know so many people who say they dream of retiring in Montana…I bet so! PLEASE let it not be louisiana…no offense to anyone, but nothing about that state sounds apealling to me. Emphasis on sound as I have never been there.
Louisiana is not a bad place. The food is excellent. Besides, you're not that far from Disney World!
Hi Gail,
If we were to win this beautiful home, what is the estimated time allowed before we could move in? I know there must be stacks of paperwork and a couple of attorneys to meet with to go over all of the rules and press info. I would not complain one bit if it took days or weeks to get through it all, just curious to know what the usual time would be? Also, will there be HOA fees and can we see more of the community center that is supposed to be close by? I hear they have a pool? : )
Everything in this house is gorgeous and planned out so well. It amazes me how much love and care each of you put into these homes! I watched the HGTVpro.com videos and there is so much more to this home than one would think! Like the radiant floor heating and the solar panels and twelve heating zone controls. Wow! I just don't see how any future years Dream Home could stand up to this one! But somehow I know HGTV will find a way!
An interview from a previous winner elludes to between weeks to months for all of the paperwork. You can't stay in the house prior to it being signed over to you (even on your winner's weekend) due to the insurance on it.
HOA fees- $200 a month…pics on their website.
Pics of the community center? On the HGTV website?
No, the pics are on the San Pedro Overlook website. Just Google the community and you'll get a lot of community information. But I would like even more pics of the trail s and other community resources.
Click on the "Main" tab of this web site, scroll down to "San Pedro Overlook," and click that link. There is alot of information & pictures to explore!
Thank you gail for the information on the pantry I just watched the video and did even know there was a sink i really like how it goes from room to room. So i see the sunsets are great.
Hi and Thanks Gail for the info. I'm an artist and would love to paint some of those sunsets! I say, go on and do it as well Gail! You may have an ability or talent you never knew about.
Someone in an earlier thread had a great idea of using the casita as an studio and would I love that as well! Dreaming the dream!
If not an art studio, a sewing nook! The tiled wall reminds me of a beautiful quilt, what better place to put a sewing nook!
Wow I'm sure, and Gail your from the west coast, just think how amazed and awed us east coast dwellers view sunsets. In the pictures you looked so little compared to the doors leading to the master suite, it's those 16.5 foot ceilings, oh I wish I could see it in person. Those floor to ceiling barrier drapes are good for openness or seclusion and they used them throughout the Cali house.
-I had 2 questions from the photos but I should have jotted them down, but I'll be viewing them again soon and remember what they are.
Chow all
Calling all bloggers- if you are like me, you are probably sticking to the newer blogs. HOWEVER, I browsed one of the older sections (I think Newbies blog) and there are people not only asking questions, but begging days later because they have gotten no answers. I know we are all busy, but if you get a few free minutes…I know our numbers are growing, so if people glance over and see I'm sure they would appreciate it….I did a few, but if each person glances and answers a couple it shouldn't be too time consuming glancing back.
Another good reason to have a FAQ section, dontcha think? Love your posts by the way!
Thanks…I try. Good luck!
I do try and check back now and then, but all help from fellow bloggers is appreciated and needed.
Thanks for bringing it to our attention. A permanent FAQ tab on the Dream Home main page would sure help everyone out, GAIL and MARY included!
Amen!
I commented as one of the ones that I answered was originally listed 5 days ago and then had only a second plea from that person asking if anyone would answer the question.
I'm just as guilty of not getting back over there.
I've looked back at other blogs. It's a good thing they are still open.
I tried going over to the GH blog site. It freezes my computer when I attempt to enter the newer blogs there. Maybe Massachusetts is still having a snow storm…and things are still FROZEN…including the blog site.
See….isn't the warmer temps of the DH better? hehehe
I can't decide on weather…they were predicting more snow for us in MD a few weeks ago and so I was really hoping on more snow to play in (especially as my daughter is finishing a girl scout badge that deals with winter), but then they took it out of our forecast and I'm getting antsy for Spring…then again, today there was frost…like I said- I can't decide.
It is pretty time consuming, trying to find older posts/replies. I would suggest going to the Message Board, easier to find specific subjects and answers. More linear??
My dream of winning this home is just meant to be! I have been dreaming of living in New Mexico for two years. I am not sure why I am so drawn to this area, it is just magical. Last spring I visited Santa Fe and it was everything I dreamed of and more! The first thing I learned was, do you want green or red or Christmas tree ? I love the artistic touches in this home. Wish me luck ! Tracy from Indiana
I can assure you that there are plenty of folks who are drawn to New Mexico, and to this stunning Dream Home. We're glad to have you join HGTV dream-land, and share in the fun.
Things have been tight and heckit at home. My husband works construction so things are really slow. I just wanted to say thank you for giving me something to dream about. I know it's not likely to win but it's always really fun to dream about starting over, fresh place, meeting new place, new oppertunities and living in such beauty.
Thanks for the dream.
A Dream Home Blast from the Past: a primer for those HGTV dreamers who need to know everything about Dream Home 2010, and it's glorious fourteen year history from years gone by.
1998 HGTV Dream Home – Beaufort, South Carolina (DH #2)
The second HGTV Dream Home was located in Beaufort, South Carolina, one of the oldest communities in the state. The area is known for history and its deep Southern charm. That charm is reflected in the design of the Dream Home, which includes three elegant porches and a light and airy interior design.
Winner of the 1998 HGTV Dream Home Giveaway: Tina Carlson of Thousand Oaks, California was selected as the winner from among 2.5 million entries – more than double the number of entries from the year before.
Are you going to go through all 14 of the Dream Homes Coop. I am enjjoying the memories. 2.5 million entries! I bet they have 50 million entries this year!
Not if some of those creepy stories about bears, coyotes, and slithering stories keep making appearances. This could finally be an opportunity for those of us who don't scare easily. So keep them coming. hehehehe
My thought…I plan is to keep the house…if then say 2 years or so down the road if the West wins (doing an opposite plan on "How the West was won") and the creepy crawlies are really an issue then I can always sell and build elsewhere, but I love the house and the location looks beautiful so I at least want to give it a try. As for lions, tigers and bears- OH MY!- I mean oops- mountain lions, coyotes and bears- Oh my ;o) well I can handle them…watch the kids, be midful of my surroundings and good thing I have that wonderful house to keep me safe!
Can't wait 'til you get to HGTV Dream Home 2006! Until this year, that was my personal favorite.
Thanks for all this great info on DH past. We have driven past the one in Beaufort, SC. Love that area but only in cool weather.
If Newbies (or anyone else) want to see them…there is a link on the main DH page to their pics.
Thanks for giving more direct answers Gail. I will assume that the grocery store that you reached in 9 minutes was about 3-4 miles away — not too bad. And thanks for showing doors to the master suite.
I was just looking for the straight information. Now — Would you please just answer Michelle's question about whether or not there is air conditioning? That question keeps coming up. I assume there is full A/C but you have not yet answered with a yes or no. The brand and size of the A/C equipment would be appreciated as well.
We're about 99.9% sure there is NO A/C. But, there are vents if someone wanted to add it later.
SPODutch confirmed for me and others in an old post that there is NO AC. The house has ducts and vents for use in the future if you want to add AC. It was deemed to not be needed.
I think you got your answer from the other 2 replies…..no AC but vents provided. My question is this: I see ceiling fans in most of the other rooms, but do not see one in the Great Room. As it's open to the kitchen, which usually generates some heat, I wonder if I'm missing it. Any ideas?
Um…. HUH?!
Am I the only one that finds that about as odd as a …. well, a see-through glass wall in the casita bathroom?
Seriously – NO A/C? In the Southwest?
We're sure about that?
Sorry – I just have a hard time with that. Had I been the owner contracting this house I'd have switched out one of those laundry areas for A/C in a heartbeat. Then again I grew up in coastal Carolina, so I know from heat. (Yeah, yeah, all the New Mexico residents are saying "Yes, but it's a DRY heat…")
I live in the southwest and you definitely need A/C. I live in AZ and I would be lost without the ac. Its dry heat ,yet HEAT. Your body adjust to the low humidity. When its 90 degrees with no cool breeze trust me its hot. We keep inside the house set at 72 all the time. It may not click on every day but it keeps a steady temperature. I have lived on the west coast, east coast & in the south. Your body will adjust and need the AC soon.
No your not the only one , whom finds the see through casita bathroom odd. Its not a southwest thing that I know of. I know we all like to have privacy in there. Mayb there is a switch that frost the glass when you shut the bathroom door. If not the glass would be drywall as soon as I win.
