  1. It is a “fireplace” morning here in P-cola, I lit mine to take the chill off of the great room. Next, I went for “Yummy,” which nearly turned to yucky. I was preparing a nice warm bowl of oatmeal, and decided to add golden raisins and a touch of cinnamon. In the dim light of my cozy setting, I took the spice container from the cupboard. As I was about to shake a dash into my bowl, I saw that it was CHILI POWDER! Yes, I am a hot pepper lover, but not on my oatmeal. Just wanted to share.

    Heritage_Seeker on January 31, 2010 at 12:34 pm
    • Oh, no! As someone who has cinnamon on my oatmeal every morning, I'm tasting your pain!

      Wyo_Girl on January 31, 2010 at 12:47 pm
      • I should have written "nearly" as NEARLY. Oh well, I'm learning. Regards.

        Heritage_Seeker on January 31, 2010 at 1:05 pm
        • No, I got that you didn't actually eat it, but I can't get that imaginary taste out of my mouth! Yuck! (Oh, and common etiquette states that capital letters are shouting, unless you are emphasizing…oops, NEVERMIND!)

          Wyo_Girl on January 31, 2010 at 1:12 pm
          • Guilty as charged! I often use caps to emphasize certain words, but hopefully not overdone….

DBCoop on January 31, 2010 at 5:55 pm
    • Well, the peppers certainly would have warmed you up! My husband almost did something similar. He went for the cocoa mix and accidentally pulled out a big container of cinnamon I had (don't even ask why I had a big container of cinnamon!). Luckily, like you, he caught it in time — somehow the idea of a big steaming mug of hot cinnamon just did not appeal to him!

      C&E on January 31, 2010 at 12:48 pm
      • "I'll have a cup of hot cocao please, light on the cinnamon, if you don't mind," she ordered.

        Heritage_Seeker on January 31, 2010 at 1:03 pm
        • Sounds good, but my personal preference is a hot apple pie a la mode cider, which sounds more complicated than it is — just a cup of hot apple cider topped with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Now that's yummy!

          C&E on January 31, 2010 at 1:47 pm
          • That would be goo around Halloween time!

    • With my low vision everything is somewhat dim. Maybe that's why I keep my cinnamon in the cupboard with my oatmeal, raisins, sugars (light and dark) and all things sweet. Now in my "spice cupboard", i have trouble finding the regular or smoked paprika. I can find the Chili powder because it's in a larger jar. Oh, it's all so Yummy.

  3. Hi Gail,
This is my first post to the blog and really my real first blog post. I'm so new to this, but I'm so glad to find this as I pray to the home gods that I win this house. I lived in Santa Fe ten year agao and grew up as a young girl in Albuquerque, so I'm quite familiar with the lay of the land, the beautiful, unique features of the homes built there. Thanks for your continued discussions to help us with the details. If anyone needs some questions answered to living in this area, I hope they will contact me…….although I will be the winner.

santafegal on January 31, 2010 at 2:17 pm
    • Welcome to the blog there are a great bunch of people here. I'm sure there will be questions. It's very nice of you to want to help. The newbies most always have questions. Good Luck.

  5. Thank you Gail!! the tile work is truely unique and amazing…. Thank you Thank you!!

gbeaupre on January 31, 2010 at 3:33 pm
  6. Since Gail was talking about that wonderful fireplace and the beautiful tile on the wall, I would like to get your thoughts on the following:

    A. Which is your favorite fireplace in the Dream Home (don’t forget about the ones outdoors), and why?

    B. Which is your favorite tiled wall in the Dream Home, and why?

The “warmth” of that fire in the video looks SO good today!

    Heritage_Seeker on January 31, 2010 at 3:57 pm
    • My favorite fireplace is in the Master Suite. I could imagine waking up before sunrise on a cold winter morning, getting out of bed to light it, and climbing back under the covers again. I would bask in the warm glow, before putting on my hand-made moccasins, and running for my robe that is in the towel warmer.

I'll be back with my tile choice.

      Heritage_Seeker on January 31, 2010 at 4:30 pm
      • ummm I can feel the warmth of the robe as it comes out of the towel warmer. Very good descriptions leaving a visual imprint.. As for favorite fireplace…that is a more difficult decision They are all beautiful and functional…but I believe my vote would be for the torquois fireplace in the entry…it just has everything light, texture, warmth, that cozy feeling. My favorite tiled wall is definitely the Kitchen,,,I just love it so much that I may use it as my backsplash when I tackle my kitchen remodel in the future.

VABrenda on January 31, 2010 at 5:06 pm
        • VABrenda, I don't know if you read some older threads, but my reference to the towel warmer used for a robe, and moccasins came from an actual dream. It ended up with champagne pancakes. How wierd is that!

          Heritage_Seeker on February 1, 2010 at 12:21 am
          • i hadn't read that one but i wouldn't mind that dream:)

          • It's amazing how the sleeping mind works. Those "tidbits" all came for real-life experiences. Yet, while spending so much time thinking about the Dream Home, they merged into one.

            Heritage_Seeker on February 1, 2010 at 1:07 am
      • Favorite tile would have to be the turquoise tile on the entry way fireplace. Favorite fireplace is the one in the sunrise room, since that is my favorite room!

        C&E on January 31, 2010 at 11:42 pm
        • Since that fireplace is a "two-sided" one. We both picked the same one, but on different sides! hahaha.

          Heritage_Seeker on February 1, 2010 at 12:26 am
      • ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Susannamac on May 21, 2010 at 5:37 am
    • When it comes to tiled walls, I have a harder time choosing my favorite. I like them ALL!

The tile in the Casita is quite expansive, well done, and you can see it all; but it‘s a little intense for my taste.

That marvelous backsplash in the Kitchen was the first of all of them to “grab” me! The boarders of recycled aluminum around each individual tile are amazing. Having worked in the aluminum business for many years, I respect the re-use concept.

As for the tiled wall that we see in this video – absolutely stunning! Having the extra dimensional characteristic, makes me want to run my hands over them to take in their beauty through another sense.

Okay, if you haven’t guessed yet, the tile around the Master suit fireplace is my favorite (for today, anyway). The non-uniform angularity, the color scheme, and the luster; stole my heart from the first time I saw it!

      Heritage_Seeker on January 31, 2010 at 6:35 pm
      • broken tile

Susannamac on May 21, 2010 at 5:38 am
    • Fireplace – The turquiose in the entryway for the color and the way they bump out. Tile – The casita tile wall because of the uninterupped view all the way through the glass bathroom. It makes a stunning impression..

Nanaporch on January 31, 2010 at 6:51 pm
      • I love the 3-D tiles. Yeah, uninterupped view. Wow, has that ever been a point of discussion!

        Heritage_Seeker on February 1, 2010 at 12:28 am
    • Fav tile wall is the kitchen, not only because of the design and colors, but because of the recycled aluminum. That's brilliant.

The turquoise fireplace is tops with me. Could that be one that can burn wood? I do know of gas ones that are can switch to wood. Can you use the same chimney for gas and wood? Sometimes you just need that connection to our ancestors with a real wood fire. In Maine we heat mostly with wood, but do have a forced air furnace as well.

DebbieFlorida on January 31, 2010 at 7:15 pm
      • DebbieFlorida, here's what I know, etc. Your fave is the one that many people believe could burn wood. There are fire places that are bi-fuel, my friend had one which used gas to light the wood logs. with respect to the chimney, it depends. A chimney designed for wood burning, could handle gas, no problem. The fire brick in that fireplace have dark stains, as if wood had been burned there.

In Ohio, I heated our house with wood for 13 years — I had a wood burning "furnace" in the basement. It also was capable of burning JUNK MAIL, and I never had to shred sensitinve documents!

Susannamac on May 21, 2010 at 5:38 am
      • The 3 fireplaces in our house here in Georgia can burn gas or wood, and use the same chimney for both.

        C&E on January 31, 2010 at 11:41 pm
        • C&E, so wich do you use more, gas or wood?

          Heritage_Seeker on February 1, 2010 at 12:32 am
          • Wood, definitely, since we have a lot of trees on our property that died during our extended drought, and gas can get expensive.

      C&E on January 31, 2010 at 11:44 pm
      • Oh, now I just realized I didn't say why I love the turquoise tile — it is because of the wonderful textural quality and the more-green-than-blue color. (Oh, and I realized I can't edit my posts because I am not on intensedebate — I guess I need to join).

    • I'd have to honestly say that I can't pick a favorite for the tile…they are all equally beautiful to me! As far as the fireplace, my favorite is out on the back patio by the great room. I can close my eyes and envision lounging on one of those comfy seats, enjoying the warmth from the fire with a Lindtini in hand, with a million stars above…and then I hear the howls of coyotes…cool….

    • Without even reading the 19 replies I just have to say my favorite fireplace and tile are in the entry way. Loved it from the first moment I saw it on the initial DH10 blog and I love it even more since I saw the amazing tile close up and realized the light shining down on it made it look like a "waterfall". Now I'll go back and read what other bloggers think. Love this Dream Home. Thanks HGTV.

    • Master suite fireplace because it serves a double purpose–enjoy while relaxing in bed as well as when I pray, read, write, and chill in the sunrise room.

Casita wall tile is my favorite because of its colors.

Lessie on February 1, 2010 at 3:51 am
    • Definitely the master suite fireplace is my fave. I'm a total sucker for the broken tile look. Have it in my bathroom here. For tile, the casita colors are outstanding.

Susannamac on February 1, 2010 at 4:52 am
  7. What bathroom would the guests use when inside or out in the patio? Is there a bathroom that is not connected to a room? I didn't notice one.
Also, is there a concern about critters and snakes?

Helen on January 31, 2010 at 4:07 pm
    • Helen, there is a full bath right off the main entry, as you go into the office. Yes, there are many concerns on the blog about snakes and bears.

      Wyo_Girl on January 31, 2010 at 4:12 pm
    • The office has a door that goes to the outside and there is a bathroom off the office. As for the critters the dh is in a gated community, they don't seem to have much trouble there, as for the hiking trails nearby don't know. Haven't heard of anyone being bitten or greeted by a bear so far but you never know.

Nanaporch on January 31, 2010 at 6:27 pm
      • The Bathroom is located wiht the "Kid's Room" They call it an Jack n' Jill, I guess because the are two sinks. The Tub/Shower and the Toilet is located behind the sinks and has a door.

Katzpjz on February 1, 2010 at 8:48 am
        • Jack and Jill bathrooms are usually those connected to two bedrooms, no matter how many sinks. I guess it's because Jack is in one room and Jill is in the other. Also, there is another bathroom at the office door. How cool — 3 bathrooms in the main house and one very exposed one in the casita!

WyoGirl on February 1, 2010 at 3:00 pm
    • Helen,
To reitterate what has already been said–the "non-overnight guest" bathroom would be the 3/4 bath acessed through the entry hall by the office.

As to critters, one local resident says "large dogs should have no real problem, but cats and small dogs should be indoor pets due to the local wildlife like snakes and large wildcats in the region". I haven't heard anything about any bears in the area but I know that SPO being a gated community will NOT be a source of discouragement to wildlife in the area—the gates are across the entry road, not surrounding the whole community. You should also keep in mind that the community is adjacent to, and actually part of, a wildlife preserve known as Campbell Ranch–so, of course, you will have all kinds of wildlife in the area.

  8. The location of this home is amazing! I live in the southern part of NM and would love to live in the North. I've never fully toured this part of the state to see all of its amazing places as I would like. There would be much exploring and the wonder of living there!

Funny thing…a few months ago, I literally dreamed this home!!! I saw myself there as if it were mine! The dream was so vivid! Yet, I had never heard of HGTV doing this until a few days ago. When I took a tour via video, I kept feeling like this looked familiar?? Then I remembered my dream! OMG! What does this mean??

What would happen if you had to be at a certain place on the day of announcement and you were not home? I have a college class that I can't miss!

Helen on January 31, 2010 at 4:18 pm
    • The ambush is live on a Sunday night at 9pm eastern time so you shouldn't have to worry about the class. They start locating and tracking you several days before so they know where to find you at ambush time.

AustinK on January 31, 2010 at 5:36 pm

  14. House, especially the views, is so stunning I would be heartbroken if I won but, because of the tax burden could not afford to live there. Even with the generous $500,000 cash prize was reading the tax breakdown elsewhere and it is $760,000 with lots of extra expenses (I, for one, did not balk at the property taxes as ours are so much higher in Westchester. And job opportunities in New Mexico would not pay same as New York so I could not afford the upkeep on this spectacular home. It would be great if HGTV could include furniture in the prize as an option only, lowering the value of the house by $200,000 or arrange for sale of the $200,000 furniture so the dream home winner could pay the $765,000 income taxes due April 15th after winning the house. Will HGTV buy the dreamhouse back from the winner in cash? It may be very difficult to get $2,000,000 for the house in this economy in this area.

    J.R.R. on January 31, 2010 at 5:55 pm
    • The builder has stated that he will buy back the home and furnishings for $1.5 million, which is the value of the home.

      Wyo_Girl on January 31, 2010 at 6:39 pm
    • I was wondering the same thing but also wanted to know if I do win and did not keep the home could I take the funiture with me. What would the builder buy back the home for then.

      Rose @)~~ on January 31, 2010 at 8:23 pm
      • Rose I believe the deal is you take the home or you sell it back to the builder with all furnishings. Plus there is the 500,000.00 and the vehicle.

  15. Thank you so much, Gail, for that wonderful interpretation of the Dream Home! It really lights even more of a fire under my heart to want to win this for my family. You are correct, the tiled fireplace you were seated by does seem like a waterfall cascading down to where it meets the fire with the way the light reflects upon it from up above. What a unique idea & a great way to look at it! I really loved & appreciated everything you had to say about it, so thank you. Always love hearing from you!.

  16. Yummy is right, Mary! The combination of feminine and masculine qualities – the spectacular kitchen for gourmet cooking – the outdoor feeling indoors that fits our mutual love of nature and the elements – the use of wood, ceramics and beautiful tile – the impeccable detail around every corner and in each unique and gorgeous room – the fact that my parents and two siblings and their families have landed in NM in the last 10-years and love it! – all these reasons and more make this home a perfect fit for our familyl! My son has been considering Univ. of NM and daughter is months away from graduating HS. Perfect timing too! Not to mention the desire to get away from the high NY taxes and cold weather – it's below zero here today… Huge KUDOS to the designers for every thoughtful effort in this home and for choosing NM to build it in! Looking forward to meeting you and the HGTV team and having the opportunity to thank ALL contributors at our house warming party!! You're all welcome any time!!!

  17. My husband & I have been living in New Mexico every day through the TV show and your visits and input about the Dream Home. First time we've been soooooooo excited about leaving California. We LOVE the high desert look and all of the eco-friendly inovations of this home, landscaping and location! Keep up the good work and enjoying the warm fire. We recorded the TV show and watch it a couple of times a week so we can invision ourselves, family and friends getting full use out of the home. Love the way the outdoors is always so visible from the indoors.

  18. Group input requested for the question:

Is the fireplace, featured in this video, capable of burning wood?

Sub question: has anyone seen a chimney on the roof?

    My thoughts:
? It appears that it is constructed for wood burning, i.e. fire brick.
? There are tell-tale black stains on the walls of the fireplace.
? There is a wood pile out side the house.

    Heritage_Seeker on January 31, 2010 at 8:02 pm
    • If it can burn gas logs it more than likely can burn wood, however the gas lines run to it would have to be removed. Right now it is a gas fireplace (see photo 10 under entry hall photos) which states " The Rinnai gas fireplace provides needed warmth, when sunny days give way to chilly evenings." You can also see the gas line on the left side of the photo.

Barbara on January 31, 2010 at 9:00 pm
      • Thanks for your reply, Barbara. I've seen that photo, but everytime I go to the Rinnai website I can only find one (1) "indoor" fireplace. Since they put a link to Rinnai right on the picture, it must be a Rinnai. A friend of mine had a wood-burning fireplace that had a gas burner to light the logs, but I don't know the manufacturer. Regards.

        Heritage_Seeker on January 31, 2010 at 10:52 pm
    • Hi H_S!
I'm definitely no expert, but I think it might be capable of burning wood. I'm pretty sure what I'm seeing about 12 seconds into the video "Load in Day" under "HGTV Dream Home TV Show" under the videos link is a chimney located right over that fireplace area. The black stains don't lead me to this conclusion though because a lot of times they are made that way to resemble "real" fires. I also definitely saw the large stack of wood outside which would be another clue unless they think the owner will want to do a lot of camping!

WHinFL on January 31, 2010 at 9:46 pm
      • Thanks for the reply, WHinFL. I'll look at that video, etc. I "hear" you about the black stains.
        Camping (LOL)! Regards.

        Heritage_Seeker on January 31, 2010 at 10:42 pm
    • H_S I found the chimney! If you go to the top 10 videos and at the beginning of the one that Monica does making the Margaritas it shows a roof top view and you can easily see the chimney. WOOHOO no school tomorrow as the Tidewater area is still realing from the 9 inches of snow that we are not use to getting. Now I can watch more of the dream videos:)

      • Hey there, VABrenda. Ididn't see your avatar before! Thanks, I'll go check it out. I saw it, although briefly, in the "Load In" video. Tidewater, with 9" of snow – Yikes! Tidewater, I'll have to look that up. I went on a family vacation years ago to the Tides Inn hotel in (oh boy spelling not too good) Kilmarnick (?).

        Heritage_Seeker on January 31, 2010 at 11:40 pm
        • Yes I was playing today on the computer and figured out how to add my avatar. New to all this blogging stuff but it is fun. Tidewater is the term for Norfolk, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach area. Since we are close to the water we usually don't get much snow so this storm pretty much shut down the area. Glad I went to the groc. store before work on Friday. We have been blessed though as there are no power outages like Oklahoma. MANY car wrecks though. I listened to the news and stayed in…hot cocoa and HGTV Dream Home:)

          • By the way, who's the "little one" in your photo?

            Heritage_Seeker on February 1, 2010 at 12:40 am
          • That is my only grandchild "Ryan". He is now 20 months old . So much easier being "Grandma" than being "mom".

VA Brenda on February 1, 2010 at 1:03 am
          • Hello, Ryan! Sorry, VaBrenda, I can't really relate, personally, but I CAN understand. One situation is 24/7, the other has an"end in sight."

            Heritage_Seeker on February 1, 2010 at 1:55 am
          • Yep that is pretty much it:) I get to see him about once a month.

  19. Question:
Does anyone looked up any other winners to see what they did or are doing?
If so, do you have credible websites that I could use for my English research paper?
    Thanks a million,

  20. A Website to Warm You Up!

Good Sunday evening to you! With regards to the fireplace in the master bedroom, it is from Montigo and the Model number is L52ST. For more details, here is a website to warm you up…

    http://www.montigo.com

I found the fireplaces on this site to be exceptional. It would be very difficult to pick one as they are all so stunning! I think I'll make a cup of hot chocolate and browse this Montigo website once again! ;) Enjoy!

    Living the Dream!

LynnCoggin on January 31, 2010 at 11:04 pm
    • Thanks, Lynn. I took a short look at the Montigo website. As I mentioned in my "favotites" post, The Master Bedroom fire place is mine.

I've been trying to get more information on the fireplace in the Entry Hall. As Barbara pointed out, photo # 10 of the Entry Hall series has a caption & link referring to Rinnai. When I go to their website, however, there is only one listed for "indoor" fireplaces; and it is definitely not the one in the Dream Home.

With your seemingly limitless research abilities, would you please help. Again, I'm looking for info. for the Entry Hall fireplace, as featured in Gail's video. Thanks, H_S.

      Heritage_Seeker on January 31, 2010 at 11:22 pm
      • Hi there H_S! You and Barbara are correct…it does clearly state in Photo #10 that it is a Rinnai product. Maybe they carry gas logs as well as fully enclosed fireplaces. I'll have to check it out tomorrow when they are open for business. Hmmm…we'll see!

        Living the Dream!

LynnCoggin on January 31, 2010 at 11:53 pm
        • Thanks, Lynn. There have been SO many questions about the stack of wood outside, and speculation about that fireplace. I'm trying to find the truth – I know it's out there! Regards.

          Heritage_Seeker on February 1, 2010 at 12:52 am
      • H_S – Okay, so I am going to go out on a limb (excuse the pun)…

#1 – The Entry Hall fireplace is definitely not wood-burning and that there are gas burning logs placed inside the hearth. I think most would agree with this statement.

#2 – I believe the Entry Hall gas logs are "Real-Fyre" gas logs manufactured by R.H.Peterson Company. And, it is quite possible the gas logs were purchased at a store called 'The Fireplace' located in Albuquerque.

That's my story and (for now) I'm sticking with it! ;)

        Stay warm!

        Living the Dream!

LynnCoggin on February 1, 2010 at 4:19 am
    • Photo 13 of the Master Bedroom says it is a Rinnai. Is that caption wrong?

David on February 1, 2010 at 12:39 am
      • As does photo 3 of the sunrise room.

David on February 1, 2010 at 12:41 am
      • David, according to Lynn, it's a Montigo. Look for her post. When I went to the Rinnai website, I only found one "indoor" fireplace, and it was not this one. The Montigo, seems more plausible.

        Heritage_Seeker on February 1, 2010 at 12:59 am
      • I believe the information on the photo is incorrect. It is definitely a Montigo with the model number listed above. In addition, I do not believe that the Entry Hall is a Rinnai…still researching though. ;)

  21. Rinnai & The Dream Home.

As I know many of you may already have this information tucked into your Dream Home memory bank, I thought I would share this info for those who may have missed it…

Rinnai is the EXCLUSIVE tankless water heater and outdoor fireplace of the HGTV Dream Home Giveaway 2010. The Dream Home:

    – has several outdoor entertaining areas, one containing a Rinnai Impression Outdoor Fireplace.
    – has a Casita or guest House which contains a Rinnai Tankless Water Heater and an Impression table top fireplace.
    – has a laundry room which contains a Rinnai Boiler and Tankless Water Heater.
    – has a recycling room with a Rinnai Tankless Water heater.

As the EXCLUSIVE tankless water heater and outdoor fireplace, a Rinnai commercial will be run periodically on HGTV between now and June.

    Hope this helps! ;)

    Living the Dream!

LynnCoggin on January 31, 2010 at 11:26 pm
    • Good research, Lynn! So it sounds like the photos identifying the inside fireplaces as Rinnai are mislabeled. They must be Montigo, as you have stated. Great job — you should work for HGTV!

WyoGirl on February 1, 2010 at 3:13 pm
  22. Thanks Lynn for all the research you do to help us bloggies:) I would love to have a tankless water heater.. I checked them out a couple of years ago but at he time went with a less expensive gas energy star heater. Perhaps when this one goes I will be able to get the Rinnai:)

  23. Gail,

Thank you for bringing the home to life with such enthusiasm. I am hooked, it is by far my favorite design and location (and yes, I have entered to win). As to "Yummy", that sounds like your risotto. I think we all want to have your favorite risotto recipe posted, a perfect dish to make in the NM dream house.

  24. Where would your dream home take you?

I'm sure many of you have seen that HGTV has been running a number of 'Quick Votes' on the Dream Home main page, where you're asked to choose from, for example, your preference out of several different states for a future Dream Home, or whether you prefer city, small town, island, mountaintop locations, etc.

I know my own favorite Dream Home spots right down to the community (and I've mentioned them before), but given a choice, out of curiosity, what's YOURS? It's your dream so be as general or as specific as you'd like, from just naming a state down to a city, town, or even a specific development. After all, this is where dreams begin to take flight!

Is there a Dream Home coming soon to a location near you? Name it and claim it!

DBCoop on February 1, 2010 at 12:42 am
    • Ok, I've got three: a modern, multi level house with lots of decks on an oceanside cliff near Half Moon Bay, CA; a big log cabin in Motezuma, CO; or, a contemporary pueblo somewhere near Santa Fe or in Arizona…

WHinFL on February 1, 2010 at 1:29 am
      • Oh yes, I agree, a modern, ocean cliff, multi-level home around Half Moon Bay would definitely be high on the Dream Home list. Would the contemporary Pueblo style home possibly be Dream Home 2010, or failing that, something closer to Santa Fe along similar lines?

DBCoop on February 1, 2010 at 4:31 am
        • Hi!
Yes, it absolutely could be the Dream Home 2010; however, I would be happy with another house similar to it anywhere from Santa Fe to Arizona. I just love the desert views.
It's so nice to read that you are familiar with Montezuma. Most people I talk to have not heard of it, then again I am in Florida at the moment! I lived in Silverthorne for seven years and one of my favorite things to do besides kayaking was four wheeling from Montezuma to Breckenridge in the summers or snow shoeing in winter. The scenery and wildlife there are almost indescribable! Yes, hardcore; but, if I had a house there I'd make it work with a snow cat and a snowmobile!
          Best of luck to you!

WHinFL on February 1, 2010 at 5:21 am
      • I live in beautiful Half Moon Bay and I'm thrilled to see it make your list of dream locations, but I have to burst at least part of your dream. The possibility of building a new home on an oceanside cliff anywhere along our coastside is nil. Coastal protection laws make anything but a remodel of an existing cliffside structure pretty much impossible; and even the remodel would have serious restrictions, size and height among them.
That said, there are still other wonderful sites on our coastside on which you could build your dream home and still enjoy easy access to our stunning beaches. I'm lucky enough to live just a 1/2 mile walk to the beach. My beloved dog and I enjoy many walks along our cliffs and every time I'm out there I stop and think, "wow, I can't believe I get to live here."

allyhmb on February 1, 2010 at 6:17 am
        • Wow, you live in an amazing area! No worries, no dream burst here- it is a dream after all! If my dream were to ever come true I'd have no problem working with restrictions for a remodel or even going down Hwy 1 from there anywhere to the Big Sur area. That whole coastline is amazing! I've lived in SF, Santa Cruz, Aptos and Avila Beach and I've always missed it. Anyway, dreaming is always fun. Best of luck to you and your dreams!

  25. HGTV CREATORS,

I cant' begin to to tell you how, in so so many ways this DREAM home is the perfect dream come true in my life ….
It's like you all peeked into my dreams, for FINALLY a home of my own, and put them all together….. AND you chose to place this dream come true, in the absolutly perfect location.
Not only does this home speak to my spirit but it is an answer to prayers for my health and family as well.
I want to say again how amazing you all are at what you did with this home . Not only did you create a home but a refuge, a family sanctuary , a home that radiates comfort . This, and manifested as a beautiful piece of art …..
Everyday I log on to enter, then go to the sunrise room. I imagine the New Mexico sun rising , the warm sun glow on my face….. I can almost feel it.
    BRAVO TO EVERYONE !!!!

      Living the Dream!

LynnCoggin on February 1, 2010 at 4:26 am
    • My suspicion is that all four fireplaces (two inside, two out) are gas, and not woodburning.

To my way of thinking, the wood stacked by the side of the garage is for the new homeowner, if they so wish, to build a split-rail log fence around the Dream Home to keep bears out of the back patio, where they'd likely be inclined to use the gas fireplace to roast marshmallows.

I mean really, are YOU going to go storming out there and tell some hungry bear that they aren't allowed on your patio, much less use your fireplace? I didn't think so!

DBCoop on February 1, 2010 at 5:33 am
    • Lynn, first thought: I want to thank you for your truth seeking tenacity – remarkable!

Second: I have thought about this overnight, and I agree there is no wood-burning fireplace in the DH.

Third: Why the wood pile? Aesthetics? Critter Dream Home 2010? I would search the local area to find a suitable, attractive Chiminea. I really enjoy a wood fire!

Lastly, now you can feel safer while on the “limb,” DH owner won’t need to saw it off on a cold winter night!

      Best regards, H_S.

  31. i would like to know about mailing in postcards. I found a blog from you that said postcards DO NOT need to be in an envelope. However, customer service from Scripps Network said " to my understanding postcards need to be in an envelope" Which is it? I would love to mail some postcards but will they be disCARDed?
    Love you,

david kelly on February 1, 2010 at 7:16 am
    • Hello David Kelly , I haven' t heard of mailing Post Cards , I did read in the rules you could mail in entries on a sheet of paper the size of computer paper ( Hand Print and no Photo copies), I think it's, but not sure it's 10 1/2 x 11 in. and you can send as many as you want to, but only entry one per # 10 envelope , I hope that helps , click on rules same page, where you enter for the home and maybe will see what you need . it's been a while since I read it. *Ali

      Ali B on February 1, 2010 at 7:59 am
      • David Kelly , Hey, I 'm sorry , I was wrong, I just looked and it's 81/2 x11 in sheet of paper. *Ali

        Ali B on February 1, 2010 at 8:06 am
      • It has to be a sheet of paper NOT LARGER THAN 8 1/2 * 11. So a postcard if fine. It does need to be in an envelope.

They select them while they're still in the envelope so if you use colors etc to get attention, it should be the envelope not the paper. However, they had a video of run through test last year where the selector from a handwritten bin was blindfolded, so color/decoration might not help.

Jenna on February 1, 2010 at 5:55 pm
    • Well David, my face is red red red, really sorry my friend , I 'm wrong again , I went back to the rules to check on them again , and it did say you could send a Post Card but it does have to be put in an envelope , so it would be good for you to just go and just read it all to make sure , sorry for my mistake, I guess I need to go to bed., it's 2:20 am here lol but, I'll be back, as Arnold would say lol

      Ali B on February 1, 2010 at 8:21 am
    • david…. I have sent in postcards for a while now, but I always place them in an envelope because of the personal information being forward to HGTV. The rules have said in the past that they do not need an envelope.. Just remember that everything has to be handwritten or it will be disCARDed…. Good Luck to you!

reneelovesgreen on February 1, 2010 at 5:34 pm
      • reneelovesgreen is right. An envelope is NOT necessary for postcards. Everything has to be handwritten (no mechanical reproduction). Paper in envelope no larger than 8 1/2 X 11".

" (1) online entry, per valid email address, per eligible person per day–or– hand printing your name, complete address, phone number (area code included) and date of birth either on a postcard or on a separate piece of paper no larger than 8 1/2 x 11 inches, and mailing the postcard or paper in an envelope with proper postage affixed to…"

If you take a look at the video on the selection process (type "winner process" in the search window at top of this page), you'll see the bins with both envelopes and postcards.

Dean on February 1, 2010 at 11:21 pm
        • Yep, same questions as last year. I think it's the wording that's confusing.

"and mailing the postcard or paper in an envelope with proper postage affixed to…"

There should be a comma or parenthesis in there. Like…
"and mailing the postcard (or paper in an envelope) with proper postage affixed to…"

Also It is not located in Sandia Park,; that is located on the west side of the Sandias. This home is located on the east side of the mountains. It is a good article to read. Also here is the site for where it is located: http://www.sanpedrocreek-overlook.com/hgtv_dream_home.

    • In fact if you use google maps and zoom on in or even use street view, you can see the signs off 14 and the gatehouse etc. The satellite imagery is apparently old. As phase 2 is not built yet, no roads for it even. But you can see the gatehouse that is shared and the community center. I found it interesting.

David on February 1, 2010 at 1:39 pm
  33. San Pedro Overlook is on the Turquoise Trail or Hwy 14. I moved here about a year ago and have driven on it. It is south of Santa Fe about an hour's drive. Albuquerque (or ABQ) is about an 40 minutes drive. The town Madrid is about 25 minutes drive. FYI: Madrid here is pronounced MAD-RID not like the city in Spain.
If you want watch, Wild Hogs it was film mostly in NM and in Madrid.
If you ski there is Sandia Peak on the east side, and the Tramway is located on the west side. No, there ABQ does not have transportation from there. So, you will have to drive around the Sandias to go to ABQ.
The east side does get snow where as ABQ usually gets a dusting. I'm guessing that you could cross country around there.

    • What about the crime rate — I've heard it's high?

      Heritage_Seeker on February 2, 2010 at 10:39 am
      • IMO…. The crime that is high is Property Crime. Autos & homes are broken into more then some other USA places. That is because of drug use and being close to the border. We have a new Mayor and he is making a point to reduce crime with new programs. People here do seem to have more alarms; cars/homes, then I have seen elsewhere, but I think it is becoming that way everywhere. ABQ is a big enough of of city where there is crime, but there are bad & good areas just like any city. You have to be careful where you live and don't leaves valuables in your car. I am single and I feel pretty safe, I'm just try to be smart and safe. Other wise the surroundings, climate and people win over any negatives here.

katzpjz on February 5, 2010 at 9:12 am
        • I've been thinking about moving to NM (even if I don't win), I'm tired of high humidity here in FL. Friends told about crime rate, that's why I asked, thanks for the response!

          Heritage_Seeker on February 5, 2010 at 10:22 am
  34. FYI….When I came here to check it out before I moved here, it did not take long to fall in love with this area. In ABQ you get up to go to work and there are mountains to see the sun come over them and then look thought out the day to see how it changes colors. Sunsets are the best here. If you are the outdoor type, it does not take long to drive somewhere for hiking.
New Mexico slogan is: The Land of Enchantment, but locals call it The Land of Entrapment…., the beauty of this State just takes you over…..

Katzpjz on February 1, 2010 at 8:44 am
  36. Thank you Gail – I think these Super Fan peaks into the DH are just so fun! I love the analogy of the tiled fireplace to a waterfall. Watching the special I was pleased when the designer explained that she had picked lavender as the color for the guest room because it reminded her of sunset she had watched while being in NM. It's true they do have lavender sunsets. So much thought was put into this house and a bonus is how green this house is. The fact that there is a recycling room is wonderful because it can be a job separating and breaking down boxes, how great to have a dedicated space for it. Excited to see what you have in store for us next!

RE: HGTV Dream Home 2010 – HAIKU

Recently, “busy bloggers,” while posting on the topic, “All About the Artwork,” pooled their creative talents in search of an appropriate – haiku – that would be fitting for the HGTV Dream Home 2010. On behalf of these “witty writers,” I submit the following for your review.

Our “dream” in this effort is to have the final selection inscribed onto a suitable plaque, which would become yet, one more piece of artwork, to be presented to the winner of this “hallowed home.”

The group produced many fine works of poetic art, and then voted for our collective favorite. And now, it is respectfully requested that the following “Dream Home haiku” be used, as described above, to fulfill just one of the bloggers’ dreams.

    rising sun's pure light
    mountain vistas dawn to dusk
    whispered dreams now true

This inspired haiku was written by, “Show Me The Green.”

    Sincerely, Heritage_Seeker

    And the winner is…….

    rising sun's pure light
    mountain vistas dawn to dusk
    whispered dreams now true

This inspired haiku was written by, “Show Me The Green.”

It was selection “P” – received 59% of the 22 votes.

I have posted a message for Gail / Mary – we’ll see what happens.

Thank you all for your efforts, cooperation, and patience WRT this project! I am offering special thanks to “LeeG1” and “Dean” for planting a seed which led to this Dream Home haiku.

    • Thanks, H-S, for encouraging this contest. What a delight. Loved them all, but agree that SMTG's was wonderful, utilizing so many evocative, poetic words are sometimes difficult in the Haiku form. BTW, when I taught 4th grade, I started them on Haiku combined with art. That touched on many required skills. We covered every inch of wall and ceiling space with their efforts. I still have some of them displayed in my home 35 years later.

DebbieFlorida on February 1, 2010 at 6:35 pm
      • I would enjoy reading some works of 4th graders — kids always have a unique point-of-view!

As I read, "…when I taught 4th grade…" I was reminded of a funny (but true) thing that happened years ago. Every Friday evening during boating season, a group of us would have an "TGIF" party at our yacht club in Ashtabula, OH. The first Friday after school started that year, "Mrs. Smith," a second grad teacher told us the following:

Shortly after school let out on the first day of the new school year, little "Johnnie" came running back into the classroom — crying his eyes out! Mrs. Smith asked, "What's wrong, Johnnie?" Little Johnnie replied, in an anxious voice, "I can't find my BUS!" Mrs. Smith then asked, "Which bus is yours, Johnnie?" "THE YELLOW ONE," little Johnnie screamed!

    • Thank you again Heritage!

That took a lot of thought, time and effort. I enjoyed it immensely and I'm sure hundreds of others did too.

  39. Procrastination,
    entropy and disarray,
    need to take a break!

Perhaps some of you are like me – I’ve spent ALOT of time in the pursuit of all things Dream Home!!! I have put off many mundane chores that must be done. For me (if you didn’t already know), the “haiku” project consumed many hours.

Therefore, I would like to know:

What are you NOT getting done as a result of your Dream Home passion?

    Regards, H_S.

    Heritage_Seeker on February 1, 2010 at 3:08 pm
    • For those of you who might have thought, “What the ???? is entropy.”

      Entropy

      1. Measure of disorder:
A measure of the disorder that exists in a system

      2. Measure of unavailable energy:
Physics a measure of the energy in a system or process that is unavailable to do work. In a reversible thermodynamic process, entropy is expressed as the heat absorbed or emitted divided by the absolute temperature. Symbol “S”

      Source: Encarta Dictionary

      Heritage_Seeker on February 1, 2010 at 3:22 pm
      • H_S, although you left out numbers, you still gave my head a twirl with "scientific definitions." BTW measure refers to numbers. Do you think that's why my head twirled? Symbols are surely used in ADVANCED math.

Lessie on February 1, 2010 at 11:23 pm
        • Lessie, I read your reply and I just had to laugh! I left a third definition out, but I had to leave # 2 in, not only just for you, but for the, "…that is unavailable to do work…" part. Cosidering this topic, it seemed so — apropos!

    • Wow… I am not the only one trying to get my eyes to come unglued from this beautiful home…. My kids keep coming in and wanting this and wanting that… so when I get the chance I am glued to this home and every site I can find, looking for just one more picture or just one more piece of information about the area, I am finding it very hard to find new information these days though, so I guess it is time for me to tune my attention back to the laundry, dishes, cooking, kids, and sleep!!!! Ah well, I will just have to imagine in my head that I am already in the DH doing these things there…. Good luck all and God Bless!!!!

    • Ohhhhh Boy! I'm so glad you brought in this topic. My sainted husband keeps checking my rear end to see if roots have started growing into the computer chair. I've had to cut back a bit, cause I'm not getting work done. Love the concept of entropy and the second law of thermodynamics. Great book in the subject is Gramatical Man by Jeremy Campbell. I think the spelling is correct. Out of print and hard to find, but worth the effort for serious or hobby scientists.
The project I've neglected is the redo of our downstairs powder room. I got the idea from Christopher Lowel's old show, where he was so over the top and theatrical. I have a huge collection of little turtles (from a long ago pet turtle) and lizards from just being wild about all thing cold blooded. I designed the room to look as though you are in an outdoor space connected to a lanai-like area. It's very Mexican-tropical. continued….

DebbieFlorida on February 1, 2010 at 6:59 pm
      • I love it! "…roots… growing into the computer chair."

Sorry, I did enough reading on thermodynamics when I took a year of physical chemistry. Although, entropy was my personal favorite! Like that one message I posted that went to "Mr. B's" office and never returned — it became entropy in the universe!

        Heritage_Seeker on February 1, 2010 at 8:18 pm
      • Your "sainted husband" is too funny DebbieFlorida. The Dream Home bug didn't bite him?

Wonder if we could have a matrix connection to the Dream Home via "roots growing from our rear ends connected to the HGTV website" which provides temporary access to live out our dreams.

Lessie on February 1, 2010 at 11:37 pm
    • I plastered 2 walls up to 5 feet. Painted them in yellow and glazed them in burnt umber to give that aged look. The floor is brick, so I used a length of square of rough cut wood partly incised in brick sized lengths. Painted it brick color and added grout to the grooves. Really looks like brick. This gives me a place to put the smaller "critters" so they are peeking down on guests using the facilities. The walls that are supposed to be part of the faux lanai area, are painted a Cajun rusty red that goes great with the plaster and floor. This area is the vanity sink, toilet, large mirror and sofit lighting. We put in oiled bronze lighting with mustard glass shades and matching faucet. The area above the wall and the ceiling is a deep rich blue to give a night sky effect. I'm now putting in some stars that will glow in the dark. There will be a caligraphy sign tell guests to turn off the lights to enjoy.

DebbieFlorida on February 1, 2010 at 7:10 pm
      • Very creative DebbieFlorida. This should be a fun room.

Lessie on February 1, 2010 at 11:40 pm
    • continued..The fauz brick is on top of the faux masonery wall. I'll dot the stars in white and when dry daub them with the glow paint. I just got some southern constellations from the internet, mainly the Southern Cross. I still have to paint the tripical foliage on the walls above the plaster. On top of this I plan to put silk banana leaves and such. Lizards will affixed to the walls in all sorts of ways, as they were before I started this project. Tom is building a small (about 8 inches) awning to be fixed to the front of the soffit and thatched with fallen, dead cabbage palm leaves as the indians do chikees. Above that and hidden from below is a string of rope light that will come on when the lights are flicked on. I also have a funky bunch of metal stars and moons that I need to figure out where to place.

DebbieFlorida on February 1, 2010 at 7:19 pm
      • I just had a vision of "metal stars and moons" suspended from the ceiling, as a mobile. Maybe that's because I'm only an hour away from "Mobile," AL. haha

Lessie on February 1, 2010 at 11:46 pm
          • Lessie, the short answer is no.

New Orleans ("Naw Lins") is only 200 miles from me, and it would be a short trip, but I'm not THAT "into" them to brave the frenzied crowd. I'll have a "front row" seat in front of the TV.

I just wanted them to be IN the big game for the first time, and really don't expect them to win; but I hope they do. I won't be as "pumped" as I was for the championship game. Regards.

        • Ho ho. Over-the-top, as in Christopher Lowell. Ho, ho. When I'm in a hurry, I pay scant attention to my finger placement on the keys or the engagement of my brain. I am trying to make it look as though I've accomplished something while my hub is out grocery shopping as I run upstairs to read the blogs. Baaaaaaad. For someone who had no interest in constant communication, I have certainly gone "bloggal". I think it is because of the quality of "our" bloggers. I always feel lifted after reading them and have gotten some really good ideas.,

          • DebbieFlorida, sorry, I just could't resist! Iknow what you're talking about w.r.t. fingers & keys & brain! When I was in high school; they didn't have "key boarding," they had "typing." Back then, there weren't very many, if ANY, guys in the typing class! Although, thinking back (from the future), maybe I missed an oppurtunity — one guy & lots of girls. What WAS I thinking! Now I have a handicap – four or five finger "hunt & peck." hahaha (I do use two hands though!)

    • Thanks H_S for the Haiku contest and I do hope it appears in the Dream Home segment on TV. COngrats to Show me the Green for winning and all that submitted wonderful poems. I tried to come up with one but I am better at writing odes. Spending time on the Dream Home website is totally addicting…

No time to shop, no time to sweep
Not time for dinner, although we must eat.
No time for bills, no time for laundry
No time for anything, I am in a quandry.
      This routine sure epitomizes entropy
As I type away on the Dream Home entry.

Good Luck all Dream Home entrants:)

    • Hey H_S – I like this question a lot!

I cannot reciprocate the feeling though. School is in full swing again and since I am 50k in the hole for this "needed" experience, I cannot give way to procrastination. So, my only regret is that I could not keep in contact with all of you through the blogs.

I absolutely loved the last one, I think it was entitled "What is your Dream?" If it was possible to get on yesterday or whenever it was originally posted, I would have readily replied with dozens of posts.

Take care with necessities throughout your day and don't worry, in my Dream World procrastination is not evil!!!

  40. Coop: You want to know what would be my most favorite Lindt Chocolate IS? Well, being that Valentine's Day coming up, I would love to build my own gift basket with all their quality chocolates (a sampling of every kind); have a big bow on top with a card with a message that says: "Happy Valentine's Day" to Marie from HGTV! The card would also say, "You are the winner of the DH2010!!" How extraordinaire would that be? I guess in reality as a true Chocolate Connoisseur I would have to stick with just plain ole Lindt Dark Chocolate Truffles!! YUMMY in the TUMMY!!!!

Marie Miller on February 1, 2010 at 3:17 pm
    • Whatever your Lindt Lindor Chocolates of choice, Marie, HGTV might not respond by Valentine's Day, but you MIGHT get a chocolate gift basket from them on Daylight Savings Time Day. Not nearly as romantic as Valentine's Day, but if the Dream Home comes with it, I'm sure you won't mind!

      Happy Turquoise Trails!

DBCoop on February 1, 2010 at 4:00 pm
    • Hi there Marie! As Coop suggested you may have to wait until March 14th to get something from HGTV.

However, keep in mind, that March 14th is White Day and is a romantic holiday celebrated in Japan, Taiwan and South Korea. The holiday falls on March 14th, one month exactly after Valentine’s Day. Tradition in these countries holds that women are supposed to give men romantic gifts on Valentine’s Day, while men are supposed to return the favor on White Day.

So…maybe…a man will show up at your door and present you with chocolate on White Day…say, maybe…Jamie Durie! ;) Hopefully, there would be two sets of keys along with the chocolate in the heart shaped box!

Can't wait til March 14th! How about you?

      • Lynn Coggin, you are a warehouse of information! White Day….does that mean women dress in white? The winner of the Dream Home should definitely be a female to receive such a great gift on White Day!!!

Lindor Truffles take fourth place to winning the Dream Home, Terrain, and cash. But no problem chocolate lovers….The Dream Home comes with Lindor Truffles.

Lessie on February 2, 2010 at 12:07 am

  41. I haven't been able to find an answer for these questions which keep my husband up at night: I know the winner is responsible for all the taxes, etc. of the DreamHome package which is valued at over $2million. I also know that $500k is in cash, presumably for paying those associated costs. But is that enough? I'm no accountant, but 35% of that $2m is $700,000 leaving the winner to pony up a whole bunch of cash for federal taxes–let alone state and local taxes. Can you help clarify what the initial associated cost load will be? What are the Homeowner Association costs, which will cause the winner to incur additional monthly costs? And do you know if the Homeowner Association allows the house to become a vacation rental? Without the possibility of it becoming an income-generating property, I seriously doubt we could afford to keep the DreamHome since actually moving there on a permanent basis isn't possible. I hate to be a kill-joy, but it seems like the DreamHome could become a nightmare! Help me explain to my husband that the DreamHome package really could be our dream come true!

Mommela on February 1, 2010 at 4:25 pm
    • OK, I know that there are those of you who KNOW I said I wasn't going to talk finances anymore, but here is a person who REALLY wants to know. So…..yes, the IRS will tax you upon the value of the entire prize package. You are correct in assuming that taxes will run approximately $700,000. HOWEVER; the develepor of San Pedro Overlook has already agreed to a buy back of the home if the winner desires it, so you don't even have to worry about selling it if you can't afford the taxes, HOA fees etc. Essentially, if you win, you have won $2M in cash AND a new car. After taxes you still have about $1.3M AND a new car—PLUS HGTV gives you the great experience of being a suprise winner, being on TV and taking a wonderful vacation to New Mexico to see the Dreamhome and the surrounding area!! Still a GREAT prize win in anybody's book!!!!

      MOMK9875 on February 1, 2010 at 5:02 pm
      • MomK, with your financial background, can you please answer all tax questions? You certainly won't offend me because numbers aren't my thing.

Lessie on February 2, 2010 at 12:16 am
  42. Mommela…. Most HOA's do not allow rentals nor commercial use. To obtain a long term lease, you would need to hire a Real Estate Attorney (sometimes a broker is fine) to draw up the documents, perform the credit check and correspond with the HOA for approval. Most do not allow leases as many object because they have members who live within the subdivision. (of course, all HOA's are different and some are run by a separate entity and some be residents, etc.) I have posted the HOA dues in a previous blog and they run around $2400…. To get the entire cost involved and your options, I would wait until you win, they hire a tax attorney/money manager to best make an educated decision, whether to sell, obtain a mortgage, work out tax payments with the IRS,, etc…… TO ME, it is a DREAM HOME that I would love to win no matter if I could afford to live in it… I would walk away with more than I did entering!!!

  43. REPOST From San Pedro Overlook/San Pedro Creek: (for those who missed it)
This is an exclusive gated community with concierge service. These homesites (land parcels) range from 3 to 6 acres and are located just 1 mile north from San Pedro Creek Estates at Turquoise Drive. There is a community center, pool/jacuzzi, and walking paths/trails. Currently there are two phases with a total of 100 homesites. There is another phase 3 with 68 more sites coming to SPO possibly in 2010.
The terrain boasts superb views of the surrounding mountain ranges: Sandia, San Pedro, Monte Largo, South Mountain, Ortiz, and Jemez. Many sites are directly adjacent to the unspoiled 625-acre nature area consisting of red-rock canyons and the San Pedro Creek bottom. This same nature preserve is shared between the two communities. San Pedro Overlook has added its own open space to the original 625-acres for a new total of approximately 700-acres.
Other features include underground electric, telephone, Comcast cable TV, high speed internet, natural gas, and state of the art shared well water system.
Each site has carefully placed building envelopes which average about 32,000 square feet, this preserves views and distance between homes.
The annual dues are approximately $2400. This covers primarily the maintenance of the common areas (landscaping), private roads, community center/pool, gate/concierge, community paths, and snow removal (on the paved streets). Land owners are subject to the same dues as home owners.

I think I forgot to sign in before I sent it, so you may not have received notice. I mentioned a book by Barbara Kingsolver concerning eating local…I remembered the title, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle.
And I wanted to say that you are very wise for a young person. To me now, 40 is young. Wish I'd known all that you seem to at that age.

I have to agree with Lessie's posting about people not reading the blogs or researching things BEFORE asking questions. Some just try to take the easy way out I guess.

  44. This is a wonderful house. Truly my fav in 10 years. I have a question about extra furnishings. Can you turn in a lamp, picture frame, chair or drawer? Will it make your ARV less. I know you pay taxes on all furishings but what if you decide not to keep everything. For example the guest room would be used as my daughter room. She wouldn't need two beds. Could I get rid of one of them to lighten the load. Or the two laundry rooms, could I turn in one of the washer and dryer sets?

    • You could always donate any items you don't want to charity and take the ARV deductions off of your income taxes. When you win you win everything – no picking & choosing.

  45. Wow, $2400 a year is pretty cheap for a community with a pool, gate, concierge etc..! Good news.

    • AustinK… I thought so too!!

NikkiLGS on February 1, 2010 at 6:03 pm
    • You have to accept the house prize completely. They're not gonna send things back to sponsors and reduce the prize ARV. Sponsors are counting those investments as advertising dollars well spent. HGTV have supposedly made an arrangement for the developer to offer a buyback on the fully furnished property for the ARV, which should be sufficient for anyone who's thinking of taking the prize. You could buy or build a similar property that's more in line with your remaining budget if you can't swing the initial tax bills or ongoing upkeep expenses.

  47. Hi Gail, very good job, you just talked with ease. I agree the layout is well planned, with a sense of wide open space with hearts and nooks within it, and then a separate master wing and in-law suite (casita). Even the study is a tucked away nook and at the same time openly flowing to entry way and dining room. I love that little bathroom off the study, with a mix of modern amenities and old world tavern style. Good simile, the ceiling light shining on the fireplace tiles is like a waterfall to the fire.

  48. The house is beautiful but I'm puzzled about the landscape. Was decomposed granite or some other covering placed on the areas disturbed by construction? If not, the new homeowners are in for dust-storms and mud-bowls.

Is there a water catchment system to capture rainwater to use in the landscape? Hope to see one–makes good sense in the desert.

I'd like to see more trees near the house. The home lies in a beautiful wild area but there is almost no cover or encouragement for birds and wildlife within viewing from the home.

    • I agree with everything you posted. In the Spring it can get quite windy in NM. I also thought about catchment system, not for just the rain/snow, but also water that is use in the house. I forget what the name it for it but, it saves water from sinks, showers/tubs and maybe laundry. Here in NM water conservation is very import.

      • This won't answer your "water" questions — perhaps someone else can help.

RE: landscaping. Did you see the video "Landscaping Dream Home 2010" yet? If not go to the "Video" page of this site, scroll down to "Featured Video Channels" section. • It is called a grey water system. Not that I am aware of one in the Dream Home, but that is what it is called.

      • I was thinking "cistern" is the word you were looking for.

LynnCoggin on February 1, 2010 at 6:59 pm
    • As always Lynn, love your informative blogs! First female CEO..GO Bissell!

VABrenda on February 1, 2010 at 8:24 pm
    • You are so right, Lynn. We have some Bissell products. They last and last. Now I know where to get that long duster to clean the fan at the top of the cathedral ceiling in the Maine house.

DebbieFlorida on February 1, 2010 at 8:42 pm
    • Good promo, Lynn. BTW, My current vacuum, brand X, has lost suction (no clever remarks please), even with a new bag. I'm planning to buy a new one, and will consider a Bissell; but should I wait 'til AFTER March 14th? Your thoughts?

      Heritage_Seeker on February 1, 2010 at 9:29 pm
      • H_S, if your vacuum has no suction, replace it with a Bissell now. You can always donate it later.

Lessie on February 1, 2010 at 8:44 pm
        • Good point, Lessie, thanks. One more reason to find a "soul mate" — "two heads are better than one!"

ps Can we add Jimi Hendrix, Santana, and Ritchie Havens to the "Review?"

          Heritage_Seeker on February 2, 2010 at 1:08 am
        • … and Beonce, Lady Gaga, BonJovi, Cream, The Doors, Lionel Ritchie, ….?

          Heritage_Seeker on February 2, 2010 at 1:14 am
    • There's also a Proheat 2X Healthy Home carpet cleaner. If you take the tour of the laundry room it can be seen in the Sunrise room. I would love a change to try all that stuff. Especially the Steam Mop. I did go out and get the Little Green steam Machine but haven't had anything to clean up yet. If I hadn't gotten it I'm sure the dog would have thrown up. Hmmmm good preventative medicine, get a Little green Steam Machine and keep the dog healthy. :o )

    • As usual Lynn, thanks for the information. It doesn't surprise me that Bissell, a cleaning products company, would be the first to hire a female CEO. If you worked for them, that honor would have been yours!

  50. I am new to this, but fell in love with the house. Even if I don't win " but hoping and praying I do" I will use some of the ideas in our current remodel. Thanks for all the great post and pics !
